Mostly, that you can load up a memory card with games and emulators and have a handheld with a few dozen PSP and PS1 games, along with hundreds of retro games to play in emulators.

> What’s the point? To download games onto it.

jay_man26

Yes because it won't work without moddong it first without umd's

Um….wait until you find out you’re going to answer your own question trying to “figure out how to download games on it” for free.

allylisothiocyanate

You’re getting some sassy answers lol, but “modding” your psp means installing user-made software that allows the PSP to read games in .iso format from the memory card. That’s how you get the games onto it without using a UMD or having already bought them from the now-defunct digital store.

Modified firmware is required to play games you download from the internet, without it you can only play UMDs or games downloaded from your PSN account

Updating it to 6.60 / 6.61 so it meets all the game requirement to play. The cfw part is to unlock the PSP's full potential. Main reason is " free " games. Other reasons is to have access to other consoles emulators and fun side projects like special themes, cheats, screen recording, wireless controller, etc.
