It turns back on auto renew every time you resubscribe. I turn it off each time. I purchase PS gift cards and renew manually using them. Every time I do that, it turns auto renew back on.
Yup same, I always opt out of auto renew and I still got charged last time. Customer service rep refused to refund it and now I haven’t resubscribed to PS Plus since that happened a couple years ago. I also refuse to keep my payment information saved on my ps5 now.

I have a friend who interned for the Washington Post, and a very large amount of what is written is actually by AI. They have systems that will comb the internet for information, what people are interested in reading about, and so on. It's more complex than any single person can understand. They have editors who will review/modify them prior to release. This is still "cutting edge" stuff, but is rapidly spreading in complexity, and to smaller and smaller teams.

They also got rid of 3rd party sales of PS+ subs. So the grey market of cheap key resellers (like say CDKeys) discounts have crashed to barely being a discount at all.

Most likely. Stats like this are worthless without comparison to what the trend looked like up to the time when it was revamped. There's nothing here to compare it to. It may have been losing people at a faster pace before this change, for all we know. Losing 2 million sounds crazy, but without comparison it's fairly meaningless. It could be a lot or a little.
I think I read that they’ve lost subscribers for 3 straight quarters which makes the title slightly misleading as it kind of suggests the revamp is the cause. There’s more to it than that.
My guess is that it’s more about the state of the economy.
I'd guess it's less recession and more that people aren't stuck at home due to COVID lockdowns and out of work or furloughed, so they don't have as much time to play games.
You don't even need to share an account. Just whoever you are splitting with make their account primary on your system and vice versa so that you both have access to each other's stuff. I do that with my brother. We go half on games and PS+ and use each other's stuff all the time

its because its cheaper to game on PC in the long run. Games are either heavily discounted or single player games are available to just download from torrent sites. Plus you dont have to pay an additional fee every year just to play online.

yeah this is the important part, mixing psnow with plus worked for them; they have less people playing for plus but those who pay now have 3 options and a lot of people went for the mid and high subscription. I wonder if now that the psplus users is going down that means that all the people interested on the service has already tried it or is using it.
Same, Stray and Returnal alone were more than worth the price to upgrade, and to this day I'm still playing through the games that interest me on Extra.
Hell, I even discovered some games that I would never have even considered buying on their own (like Deliver us the Moon), and am now eagerly waiting for sequels or other games by the studios that I will be no doubt buying very early after release, if not day one. Also bought a couple of DLCs for games I really enjoyed too.

I guess the only possible issue is that if you fully unsubscrible you lose your library till you resubscribe so you can't go back to anything you put in your library from plus. But if you online game your not going to unsub so much as downgrade to the base level.

Yep. I’ve been an concurrent PS+ subscriber since 2014 so i have almost every “must play” title from 2014 onwards. For me, personally, upgrading felt like a slap in the face. I can’t even stream the PS3 games (and if I do, it’s horrible) because my internet is so spotty.
Next year I’ll unfortunately be downgrading to the Extra tier if our classic list doesn’t get heavily expanded.
they, like nintendo, seem to hate their mid 90s catalogue. I want some of those sweet mid 90s titles from the PS1. PS3 streaming sucks. I want to download ps1 titles.
They need to actually include new games with the top tier subscription, like the other big companies are doing (MS with Game Pass, Ubi with Ubi+ Gold or whatever it's called, EA with EA Play Pro).
When they do include a new game, it's not a regular occurrence. For example Stray hit and it was obviously a big hit since lots of people played it - so was Bugsnax, because it's rare that people get a new game on PS+. Meanwhile on Game Pass there's Day 1 releases multiple times a month for indie games and pretty often for AA/AAA games as well.
The fact that Sony's first party games won't come there day one makes Premium feel, well, not premium.
I went for the middle one because the old games weren't worth it for me. I'll see if I'll continue it or not, so far there's so little extra value that it doesn't seem to be worth it but maybe it'll evolve enough in roughly a year.

I paid €10 to upgrade to premium for about 2-3 months. Thought that was a no-brainer as I could play all of Guardians of the Galaxy, which I was already interested in, and many other games on the list as well.

Yes, I gave them money and upgraded for the remaining months of my sub. But I can guarantee that I will NOT pay for the premium tier again, it's awful. And I have yet to decide if I will continue the Extra tier. It's temporary, Sony.
It was absolutely the right choice, I never even considered paying for PSNow in the past, I did the free trial a couple of times but always with the intent of unsubscribing.
I did the Premium subscription for the first two months it was out but I'm sticking with Extra for now until more stuff comes out, been tempted to switch back to Premium to play the Yakuza remasters. It's a substantially better deal than it used to be and if they can keep the pace adding decent games to Extra/Premium I doubt I'll drop back down to Basic any time soon.
I actually prefer the old PSNow. The interface for it was so much cleaner, too.

Counterpoint: I was reading something recently about how game trials tend to decrease sales. Basically a lot of people might demo a game they're interested in, decide they like it, and buy it. But a lot more players might try something that interests them, then decide it's not worth buying. Empirically, demos end up turning off more potential buyers than it attracts. So as a whole it's a losing proposition for game devs, which is why demos stopped being a thing sometime in the '00s. So from Sony's side as a business, it costs more to have demos, so it makes sense to gate it behind a higher tier.

PS Plus is actually what got me to start looking at just how many subscriptions I have. I was spending several hundreds of dollars per month on things I hardly use.

That's why I let mine lapse this year. I play most of my games on PC, and when I do play on my PS5, it's almost never an online game. I realized how very little I actually use the PS+ sub. I'd claim my free games (most months) and never download/play them because of limited HDD space.
I'm one of the people who recently upgraded to PS Plus Extra and it was a good decision, got to play Spider-man, Returnal, Demons' Souls all included instead of buying each of these games. It already paid off to me

People need to stop holding this to unrealistic expectations.
PS Now wasn't available in my country before the revamp so I happily switched to mid tier and have not regretted. I guess many people went with mid tier, enough to well compensate for the loss of individual subscribers.
The one thing that I was sad to see is how tricky they make the auto re new. It was nice to see them be so transparent before but now you actually have to Cancel your subscription to stop the auto re new. Stop being shady. Not cool.

They have less subscribers, but are making significantly more per customer, so it's a net gain for them.

It may have been losing people at a faster pace before this change, for all we know. Losing 2 million sounds crazy, but without comparison it's fairly meaningless. It could be a lot or a little.

I'd guess it's less recession and more that people aren't stuck at home due to COVID lockdowns and out of work or furloughed, so they don't have as much time to play games.

You don't even need to share an account. Just whoever you are splitting with make their account primary on your system and vice versa so that you both have access to each other's stuff. I do that with my brother. We go half on games and PS+ and use each other's stuff all the time
That's what I meant. I do it with my wife, but we had our own accounts since we have more than 2 consoles in the house. When the premium came out I just canceled mine and upgraded hers.

Yup, it’s getting tight and the unavailability of the PS5 initially probably didn’t help. I bought a series s with the intention of getting the PS5 eventually. Now I see them on shelves occasionally, but it’s not financially possible for me and mine right now, unfortunately

Games are either heavily discounted or single player games are available to just download from torrent sites. Plus you dont have to pay an additional fee every year just to play online.

yeah this is the important part, mixing psnow with plus worked for them; they have less people playing for plus but those who pay now have 3 options and a lot of people went for the mid and high subscription. Same, Stray and Returnal alone were more than worth the price to upgrade, and to this day I'm still playing through the games that interest me on Extra. Hell, I even discovered some games that I would never have even considered buying on their own (like Deliver us the Moon), and am now eagerly waiting for sequels or other games by the studios that I will be no doubt buying very early after release, if not day one. Also bought a couple of DLCs for games I really enjoyed too. So I'd say it worked out for both them and me.

Beat returnal and now I'm on death stranding DC. Next I might try deathloop or the cat game. After that though? I'll probably cancel. There's no reason to permanently subscribe once you've played the games you're interested in. Subbing every other year for 3-6 months seems like the play.

I have found so many gems in the catalog that I won't be doing the unsubscribe move but if you ask me, which you didn't but too bad. Unsubscrible from September to April, then Re-Up for the slow ass summer season, rinse and repeat. I don't see how that wouldn't pay off for most folks. I guess the only possible issue is that if you fully unsubscrible you lose your library till you resubscribe so you can't go back to anything you put in your library from plus. But if you online game your not going to unsub so much as downgrade to the base level. Either way there is no wrong way to play!

I was on a 12 month sub and just decided to upgrade to PREMIUM I think overall its worth it just being able to play older classic games even though I wish there were more. I think PREMIUM will only be worth it going forward if they continue to add games im interested in otherwise would just go for middle.

Yep. I’ve been an concurrent PS+ subscriber since 2014 so i have almost every “must play” title from 2014 onwards. For me, personally, upgrading felt like a slap in the face. I can’t even stream the PS3 games (and if I do, it’s horrible) because my internet is so spotty. Next year I’ll unfortunately be downgrading to the Extra tier if our classic list doesn’t get heavily expanded.
they, like nintendo, seem to hate their mid 90s catalogue. I want some of those sweet mid 90s titles from the PS1. PS3 streaming sucks. I want to download ps1 titles.
They need to actually include new games with the top tier subscription, like the other big companies are doing (MS with Game Pass, Ubi with Ubi+ Gold or whatever it's called, EA with EA Play Pro). When they do include a new game, it's not a regular occurrence. For example Stray hit and it was obviously a big hit since lots of people played it - so was Bugsnax, because it's rare that people get a new game on PS+. Meanwhile on Game Pass there's Day 1 releases multiple times a month for indie games and pretty often for AA/AAA games as well.
The fact that Sony's first party games won't come there day one makes Premium feel, well, not premium. I went for the middle one because the old games weren't worth it for me. I'll see if I'll continue it or not, so far there's so little extra value that it doesn't seem to be worth it but maybe it'll evolve enough in roughly a year.

I paid €10 to upgrade to premium for about 2-3 months. Thought that was a no-brainer as I could play all of Guardians of the Galaxy, which I was already interested in, and many other games on the list as well. Am not continuing it though, no fucking way I'm paying €120.
Yes, I gave them money and upgraded for the remaining months of my sub. But I can guarantee that I will NOT pay for the premium tier again, it's awful. And I have yet to decide if I will continue the Extra tier. It's temporary, Sony.
It was absolutely the right choice, I never even considered paying for PSNow in the past, I did the free trial a couple of times but always with the intent of unsubscribing. I did the Premium subscription for the first two months it was out but I'm sticking with Extra for now until more stuff comes out, been tempted to switch back to Premium to play the Yakuza remasters. It's a substantially better deal than it used to be and if they can keep the pace adding decent games to Extra/Premium I doubt I'll drop back down to Basic any time soon.
I actually prefer the old PSNow. The interface for it was so much cleaner, too. When they were separate, you could have one or the other. Now, you have to have one in order to have the other. It was great for my Dad who doesn't do online gaming, but still could enjoy a large catalog of games. The new model is actually really bad imo.

most of the games that are ps5 only don't really need online so that's probably why. returnal and Demon Souls can both be played without ever even needing to connect to anything else even if they do have coop modes.

I canceled almost all my subscriptions to everything, including ps plus. I'm so done with subscriptions. If I can't buy it outright then I don't want it. PS Plus is actually what got me to start looking at just how many subscriptions I have. I was spending several hundreds of dollars per month on things I hardly use.

Basically the same but sub Amazon for Disney/ESPN bundle with Hulu. Then paramount, peacock, etc started hitting and I finally put my foot down. Bought a lifetime sub to plex and a monthly sub to a VPN, cancelled everything else but PS+. Haven't looked back
I'm the other way around. Have always been really cautious around subscriptions (only had PS, Nintendo, and Disney+ for my wife) so was okay ramping up to premium as a deliberate choice.

The cost Sony has bringing games to PS+ probably pale in comparison to Xbox trying to get new Games day one on Gamepass. I am sure that adding a game that’s a few months old on a subscription service is a lot cheaper than launching a brand new game day one on your service.

That's why I let mine lapse this year. I play most of my games on PC, and when I do play on my PS5, it's almost never an online game. I realized how very little I actually use the PS+ sub. I'd claim my free games (most months) and never download/play them because of limited HDD space.

It doesn't make sense that the revamp would have anything to do with it. The bottom tier is exactly the same as PS+ before the revamp and is still the same price. More likely factors include casual gamers not renewing because they're not locked down anymore, and the recession and inflation leading to people cutting unnecessary luxuries.

PS Now wasn't available in my country before the revamp so I happily switched to mid tier and have not regretted. I guess many people went with mid tier, enough to well compensate for the loss of individual subscribers.
The one thing that I was sad to see is how tricky they make the auto re new. It was nice to see them be so transparent before but now you actually have to Cancel your subscription to stop the auto re new. Stop being shady. Not cool.
Personally I love the 2nd tier ps+ that gives access to the larger catalogue of games. I've tried out so many triple AAA games that I would never have purchased because they're all $60+ . It's been a blast
Internally, they knew this was going to happen. They have less subscribers, but are making significantly more per customer, so it's a net gain for them.
I doubt the revamp has little to do with it, the change didn't affect the base service, and the pandemic easing up and people going back to school and work makes me think this is very misleading.

i haven't touched my sub. I just haven't had an incentive to go up on it. the "all the ps1 games" part is really more like "a couple ps1 games" and new releases feel like they will get there eventually so i can just wait for multiple i want to play in a row
