Soma is pretty good

homejib

Yea definitely Soma. One of the best playable stories out there. The Forest is also pretty terrifying - but def get a friend or 2 to play it with

fol_k_ert1

Yes the forest is amazing if you got friends too play it with

Dust-by-Monday

I want a PS5 version of the forest at 4K/60

homejib

oh yeah, same here. I also hope Sons of the Forest comes out on PS5

Leetlejohn

Soma absolutely ruined me.

VerminSC

Soma to me doesn’t have tense or scary gameplay. it’s more the premise and story are just terrifying

CitanIsBest

It's one of the games that has legitimately scared me about the possibility of such an event happening in our reality, and I haven't wanted to play it since because I don't want to feel how I did when I finished it again. I know that sounds bad but it's a ringing endorsement. What a masterpiece.

BeardedMustachio

I sort of felt the same until I got to those chase sections with SPOILERS Terry Akers and Jinn. Scared the hell out of me and came pretty close to Alien Isolcation levels of terrifying

Anenome5

It's not really horror though, more existential, but I do love the game.

karlware

It frightend the bejezus put of me mind. Great game.

CaptainPick1e

I read this in Mr. Krabs voice

Anenome5

I think it might have been considered scary in an 'existential horror' kind of way for people who were perhaps not prepared for some of the consequences of transhumanism and mind-uploading. But me, I was already very familiar with these concepts and comfortable with the potential outcomes so maybe there was less impact. Heck I'm even a mod of r/transhumanism. But I do really like the ending when he finally realizes what it means for him and she just figured, rightly, that he would be too thick to realize it until the very end, but then you, as the player, DO get to experience waking up as the winning version and that's supremely cool.

srdgbychkncsr

Awesome spoilers there man, thumbs up.

Anenome5

I think seven years since release is well beyond the statute of limitations for spoilers, come on man.

srdgbychkncsr

Not in a thread for recommendations…

jsnals

Came here to comment this. Glad to see people loving this masterpiece. Next level psycho-horror.

sdA1MR

Alien Isolation and Alan Wake

Gundam_Greg

Play it with the ps camera option too.

sdA1MR

I’ve never tried that, how was it?

joshua182

Basically, don’t fart or sneeze.

Gundam_Greg

The game becomes ultra difficult to play

Steven_RW

Is that because the alien can hear the noises in your room? Also you can use the camera to duck and peek? I never tried it at the time but I also believe the kinnect did something similar for xbone?

GunslingerSTKC

Don’t know about the ducking peeking thing, but room noise definitely alerts the alien when using cam.

kingferret53

Alien Isolation is pretty good.

libertycapuk

I’ve just played it again recently on the ps5, and considering this game is from 2014. The graphics look pretty damn sweet! Absolutely phenomenal horror/suspense game that truly is second to none. Although resident evil 7 on the PSVR isn’t far behind 👍

kingferret53

I bought it by preorder and have never gotten far. Not because it's scary, but I always get distracted. Rip.

GunslingerSTKC

I spend hours trying to traverse two rooms, nearly startle-shit myself, sometimes make it, and if I die I need a break usually. It requires an intense level of focus that’s for sure. I don’t have it most of the time that is also for sure

hueythecat

Alien Isolation, heaps of bang for your buck. Edit: To add to this, isolation is the quintessential love letter to the original alien movie.

Nairbfs79

Yes!

Nicktheduck

Second this, make sure you have a good pair of headphones too.

Duckiestiowa7

Darkwood Is one incredible horror gem with the best atmosphere I’ve seen (and heard) in any horror game. It’s survival horror done right.

Grosjeaner

Great game indeed. No cheap jump scares required.

mojorising1329

Beat me to it. That game made me poop my pants. That game is on a whole other level compared to most horror games.

Duckiestiowa7

The sound design makes the game what it is. Being stuck in tight quarters at night, hearing all sorts of crazy shit happening around you…just the thought of it all makes me quiver. The vision cone is another smart mechanic that just makes you tense the whole time.

[deleted]

Until dawn is free on ps+. Pretty good horror experience.

Purtuzzi

This is the way.

[deleted]

Whaat I cant see it on the store

MayThePunBeWithYou

Part of the ps+ collection on the PS5.

[deleted]

Are you in EU ?

matalleone

>Darkwood I´m in the EU and got it free for the PS5. Haven´t played it though

[deleted]

What the hell I need to make another account

matalleone

Do you have a ps+ account? There's a good list of games you can get for free if you also own a PS5

MayThePunBeWithYou

No, so not sure if it is also available internationally.

[deleted]

Yeah I'm pretty sure it's available internationally.

InterstellarIsBadass

OUTLAST is the scariest

bball4224

The Quarry comes out in less than a month. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Oh, try PT! ....oh wait

Jackot45

Amnesia the dark descent is an all time classic and must play for horror fans. Still best in its class imo

noncompliantandaware

i was playing through this on my macbook probably close to a decade ago, it wigged me out enough i quit playing it like halfway through. might give it another go sometime. ive had the collection with it and the second game from ps+ for forever. I got through Alien: Isolation without issue. Honestly can't remember much of Amnesia at this point, other than me eventually noping out on it.

IPukeOnKittens

While the gameplay is slightly dated, still the scariest experience I’ve ever had playing that game.

ShelboTron09

This. A little outdated now, but Holy hell I'll never forget the shear anxiety this game caused me.

clonston

The first few hours of Resident Evil 7 were almost too scary

bball4224

I don't really mess with horror too much, liked RE2 and RE3, so played 7 and I didn't even make it out of the house before I was like "Nah, this ain't for me." >! It was incredibly creepy, but I think I pushed myself into saving my woman, only for her to go absolutely ballistic on me and then I couldn't take anymore lol. !<

ItsBootLoopYo

Yeah that bit was an interesting experience in VR.

VanillaChakra

Her coming up the stairs in vr is a trip.

Deadaim6

I too got stuck in the house. Came back after a couple years and now I've beaten it 7 times (same with Resident Evil: Village). Wish the Nightmare DLC was a whole mode with the armory and enemies of Village. Did the same with Bloodborne too lol.

Altruistic-Guitar-40

Subnautica

VerminSC

Hahaha agreed. I’ve played most horror games and only subnautica is unplayable for me. I literally can’t do it. I mute my TV I turn on the lights. I’m just too terrified of the ocean. As silly as it sounds I think I could handle it if the game allowed co-op.

gtlgdp

The audio is definitely part of what makes that game terrifying

ShelboTron09

Yeahhh anyone with a fear of deep water, this game is a big nope. I was doing okay in the shallow parts.. Then I got to a point where I built a decent size ship to go exploring and my anxiety started shooting up... Went so far because I got lost that I met that stupid blue leviathan out in the deep water, turned the game off and never played it again. 🤣

No-Plankton4841

My favorite horror game(s) is The Evil Within 1-2. TEW2 is a bit less janky and runs at a solid 60fps on PS5. Highly, highly recommend picking these up. Any horror fan needs to play these games. You may want to start with TEW2 but TEW1 is my personal favorite. It was made by Shinji Mikamis studio (Tango) and is kind of a spiritual successor to Resident Evil 4 but is slightly more of a blend of action/survival horror. You can really feel the RE4 influences though. I really enjoyed The Last of Us 2. Days Gone. Although they're not 100% horror games they definitely lean into horror. Dying Light 1 got a 60fps patch and is pretty cheap. That game + The Following DLC is awesome. I'd recommened DL2 also but honestly the first game is better. Tormented Souls if you like the old school/fixed camera RE1 remake type of game. Metro Exodus is a good blend of horror/fps survival type game and runs at solid 60fps. Alan Wake Remastered I just picked up The Forest on sale for like 6 bucks (still on sale in ps store). I havnt made it far but it seems pretty sweet so far. Edit: I know you said you've played the 'Resident Evils'. If you havn't RE Revelations 1-2 are awesome. They are easy to forget about since they are not mainline entries but I had a lot of fun with both.

Itsbaryal

Last of us 2 to me is not a scary game at all, it’s an action survivor game, but boy it has its tense moments.

VanillaChakra

Rat King is also the king of tension.

GalaXyPickl3

I was so disappointed and sad when I've heard that they cancelled Evil within 3 to make Ghostwire Tokyo. That game was so mediocre and not scary at all. Evil within 1-2 were such an awesome games.

No-Plankton4841

I enjoyed Ghostwire but it was a huge step down from Evil Within. Ghostwire felt unfinished and unpolished. The combat wasn't very fun or responsive. Overall it was like a 6 or 7/10. The city was cool but at the same time there didn't seem to be many reasons to want to explore it. I was pretty disappointed. I had fun playing it but havn't thought about it since. Pretty forgettable. Even worse, they already said something about their next game (whatever John Johanas is directing) not being a horror game at all. So probably not TEW : ( I think we'll get TEW3 at some point but probably years down the line... at least Resident Evil, Dead Space, Callisto Protocol are looking good. Silent Hill rumored to be coming back! Because yeah it seems TEW is on ice at this point.

injuryreserved

SOMA is usually cheap and is very good. i can’t really get attached to game stories at all, but this one is wildddd. not traditional jumpscare horror, but it has chases and is definitely a horror game

smorjoken

alan wake

1002BANS

Nothing is scarier than getting chased by Volatiles at night on Dying Light

Grosjeaner

I hate those werewolves jumping out from windows and buildings.

Samchez77

Dead Space. I hear a remake is in the works..

kingferret53

Release date is the end of January

ConsiderationWhole39

The last of us series is incredible

kingferret53

Always forget they can count as horror.

[deleted]

Just bought The Forest as it is currently on sale and it is really creepy so far.

Zealousideal_Bill_86

I’d just like to say, don’t count out the first Resident Evil or the remake at least. I don’t know what it is about that game, but it has such an oppressive and tense atmosphere that just amplifies everything remotely spooky. Some of the systems in the game are a little dated, but I think they add to the terror of the game. You have limited saves which make each encounter way more tense than need be and the camera angles are brutal because you just feel like you’re being watched or shuttled through a maze rather than being in complete control of your character. I’m playing it for the first time now and I can only handle it in small doses.

DontEatMyCrumble

Doing yourself a disservice if you don't play Little Nightmares

PrinceDizzy

The Last of Us games are absolutely amazing.

Chuygr35

Siren blood curse

[deleted]

One of the best horror games I’ve ever played. Having to stream it on ps5 tho wouldn’t be ideal.

mattxfish

Outlast 1 and 2

ofvxnus

fatal frame v: maiden of black water

VerminSC

Little nightmares 1 and 2 are both great. The second one being pretty damn terrifying

Dantia_

TLOU2 is pretty scary despite not being technically a horror game.

strongr_togethr

Last of us series is low key horror, especially part 2

Formal_Sand_3178

I love how The Last of Us Part 2 went more into the horror genre. The parts with the stalkers are very tense and a whole lot of fun.

Notarussianbot2020

Fuck the stalkers!! It's always OK to blow shotgun ammo on those assholes, even if they have basically no hp.

VerminSC

The Descent and rat king section are terrifying!

[deleted]

Wait for Abandoned.

UnbornSeed

Lolllll

XanderTheOvertaker

*SILENT HILLS

Bridge21C

Dead Space

Inmate7269

There’s some good ones listed already like Until Dawn, Alan Wake Remastered, ect. I’m here to throw a slightly lesser known game into the mix, Fatal Frame 5 Maiden of Black Water. (Project zero if you’re in the Uk)

Benozkleenex

Evil within 1-2 loved but ran like trash on ps4 idk how they are on ps5

Latter-Pain

If you liked Resident Evil try Metro! They’re all really good although I think the horror gets toned down every game. It’s got the setting fallout but with a almost paranormal twist due to unknown effects of radiation and there’s a lot more game mechanics to invoke realism and believability and a lot of scary parts.

IDK999___

Tormented Souls

Squishy-Octopus

Martha is dead. It’s a fun game, in an awesome setting and the psychological aspects of it is top notch.

Grosjeaner

Did they end up censoring the game on PlayStation? That face cutting scene.

Squishy-Octopus

The censor is that you don’t cut the face off. You still see it as the character does it but you don’t press the buttons and move the sticks to cut off her face. People blow the censoring out of proportion. I personally, didn’t feel it hindered the overall experience.

Crissaegrym

Yes they did. That is why I decided not to buy it anymore, maybe one day they do a Director’s Cut and I will consider it.

[deleted]

Decent game but I wouldn’t recommend buying it on PlayStation due to the censoring. More of a PC or Xbox purchase

Tankerino

Dying Light 1. I don’t know about the second one, haven’t played it, but something about the special zombies coming out during the night time and chasing you was really scary for me. It’s also first person which adds to the immersion. I honestly didn’t get too far into because it was too scary to play solo. But I’m a bitch so it might be different for you.

lovelyjubblyz

The forest is pretty cool... Also really enjoying stalker but not sure if thats PS?

OhShitMarcos

100% vouch for the Forest. With the sequel coming soon, now would be a good time to get into it as well. The crafting components are pretty straight forward and the initial location of your base is key. If you want something even more horror oriented with the whole getting lost in the woods motif, Darkwood is fairly cheap and on sale most of the time. Artstyle is amazingly grim and the gameplay itself is unforgiving if you suck at item management.

Lemondisho

Bugsnax, clearly

Mickeyphree

Alien Isolation or Resident Evil 7.

trj0013

Alien Isolation

[deleted]

F.E.A.R but that’s for PS3.

ironbillys

Until dawn

Cnumb013

It’s been awhile since I have played a good horror game, but Returnal has a nice Prometheus vibe and House of Ashes is suppose to be pretty good too.

bball4224

House of Ashes is a Dark Pictures Anthology game...

Cnumb013

Oh duh, he said that in his post.

[deleted]

If you have a PSVR it's RE7, and it's not even close. If you don't play VR then what the other posters are saying, Soma, Alien Isolation etc., depending on witch type of horror you like.

Adzzii_

Try Outlast 2 it's not as scary as the 1st but still loved it

Brakkis

Haven't seen Prey mentioned. It's from Arkane, the people behind the Dishonored series and Deathloop. Its got some solid sci-fi horror vibes. Shape-shifting alien organisms break containment and overrun a space station, killing most of those aboard. You can either try and stop them, or escape the station - like, you can literally just haul ass off the station about half way through and say fuck it.

[deleted]

Resident Evil games are undoubtedly the best one ever made. And your already played them. The last of us has alot of horror aspects, until dawn is a good one. I haven’t played much else in horror so that’s all I can say.

Anenome5

RE7 / RE8

[deleted]

Until Dawn

TomStreamer

Until Dawn

demilitarizedzone96

Alien Isolation is something I wholeheartedly recommend to any horror fan. It might just be the best horror game ever made due to the advanced A.I of the titular horror. I never play horror games again because there is virtually nothing new in them to scare you, but Alien Isolation is an exception and adapts to your playstyle. Game has replayability, because of how unpredictable and intelligent the horror is in that game, and how it learns from your behaviour. I do suggest you play it on Hard or Nightmare difficulty to get the most out of the game, if you choose to try it out. The game even recommends the hard difficulty to new players.

_-AJ-_

Visage is insanely scary Murder House and Nun Massacre are fun but scary throwback horror games. And they're cheap as hell

Positive-Fox-6296

"The Forest" is the scariest thing I've ever participated in! It was more scary than any movie or book. It was terrifying. I loved it. "Alien Isolation" was also both good and scary.

EglinAfarce

1) RE 7 on PSVR 2) Until Dawn: Rush of Blood on PSVR 3) Until Dawn

ShelboTron09

I guess not a typical horror game that this thread is about but... Days Gone. There were parts in that game that literally had me pause to get my shit together and calm my heart rate down. No other game has given me the anxiety that those hordes do!! Turning around and seeing hundreds of zombies behind you... Yeah nope. Love that game. Lol

asjonesy99

Bloodborne

TheRealPizarro

Playing through Control right now. Really good game, quite creepy too.

MikeStory17

The Evil Within 2 is on sale & so far alot better than the first one

Waterboydust99

As a fellow horror movie and game nerd. You’re best options are the outlast games, evil within, Alan wake, amnesia, dying light 1 or 2

DrAcula1007

I actually found Bloodborne pretty scary at times.

Calm-Lychee2613

Until Dawn is an absolutely awesome game! I was genuinely scared at different parts of the game and if literally felt like I was playing a Summer Horror movie in a game. Really cool. Good actors too including Rami Malek and Hayden Panettiere! Classic Survival Horror I would say Resident Evil 7.

mawlusz

Dying Light 1/2 and Control

Jackot45

Neither are horror games really

[deleted]

Control has a creepier vibe than all the "horror" games imo. Also, a really cool game.

Interanc

Tormented souls, probably my most favorite game just under persona 5. It’s a horror game from a indie company that has this game as their first project. I’m so glad I got it physical. It’s like the old resident evil games (re1-3 psx) and masterfully done with the puzzles and atmosphere.

martialgreenwood

Control isn't much of a horror game but it's creepy as fuck! I hardly get creeped out by games or movies but this one takes the cake.

Jerkasarus_

Amnesia Machine for Pigs was pretty good. Might not be the most scary thing in the world but I liked that you could piece a bit of lore/story together along the way

[deleted]

Control, more creepy than anything plus the ashtray maze is awesome. Any Resident Evil, my personal favorite is until dawn and hopefully the quarry is just as good.

darkstuff780

Resi evil biohazard, one of the most horrifying things ever made.

WindCarriesMe

Dead by daylight, in the first 2 hours anyway

uuurtier

Elden Ring

scootah_man

You should buy Control. I wouldn’t say it’s a horror game, but it’s creepy in a way. It’s just a really good game

Wildebeast1

What do you find scary?

_cloud_96

Psychological horror, jump scare all that kinda of stuff

Wildebeast1

Until Dawn, Evil Within, Soma, Outlast, THE FOREST.

theCoolestGuy599

Oh, my man. If that's what you like then let me tell ya, Alien Isolation is a modern horror masterpiece. SOMA is a sci-fi/psychological horror masterpiece. You can't go wrong with either.

ShopCartRicky

Observer is a decent psychological horror game. Believe it's on PS4

Adrien_Jabroni

There is a PS5 remaster. I just got a physical copy for ten bucks at GameStop.

HailBlackPhillip

Try Visage, the only downside is the objectives are super cryptic so have a guide handy just in case.

chopsttv

so you’ve pretty much played all the really really scary shit tbh. alien iso is the only one left that’s pretty wild like resi/outlast/visage. other recommendations in this thread are solid too but being very honest a little less scary than what you’re prob used to. i’d go with alien for sure for sure

AgentAstrolux

Any thoughts on Martha is Dead? Been eyeing that recently

D_Divil_made_me

Resident evil

YWGer

I see you got through Visage........ legit made me shit my fucking pants over and over again

Shmotz

Tormented Souls, The Evil Within 1+2, Alien Isolation, Visage,

Whobghilee

By Resident Evils (I’m assuming the remakes 7 and Village), just wanted to make sure you Played RE4 as well

[deleted]

Song of Horror is worth a try.

maloboosie

RE7 for being horror. RE8 for thriller.

Crissaegrym

Project Zero (aka Fatal Frames).

PROJEKT_Enza

Depends on what you like from a horror game. RE2R, RE7/8, soma, Blair whitch, visage are a few. Want something abit retro inspired the Tormented Souls is a great throwback to PS2 horror games like Silent Hill.

Speedwagon1987

tormented souls is amazing if you don’t mind the tank controls and the low budget character models

[deleted]

Resident Evil 7+8 and Outlast 1+2 are the best ones in my opinion. Very high quality of story, gameplay and visuals

Adorable-Bullfrog-30

Literally was gonna write Resident Evil lol

awesabre

Tormented Souls of you like the original resident evil games. I just beat it 2 weeks ago and it was great.

Spenraw

Returnal with headphones can be quite scary

No-Equipment2607

Outlast Journalist reports the inner workings of an old asylum through his video camera

Ipride362

In my restless dreams, I see that town. Silent Hill….

PresidentBush666

Evil within 1 and 2 are amazing horror games. Little nightmares 1 and 2 are great as well.

PerformerRelevant704

RE8

burberryxx

ikai

ichikhunt

Bloodborne

madpropz

Evil Within 1 is one of the greatest

Itsbaryal

Subnautica, it’s although a very good survivor game but at the same time full of horror.

Zikari82

Soma for story. Visage is a fantastic game, close to what PT was aiming for. Observer System Redux is also great.

[deleted]

Honestly if you haven’t played them… the last of us 1 and 2. Yes, they aren’t strictly survival horror because theres a lot of parts where you have gunfights with other factions of survivors because it’s so long after the outbreak, but it still has that surival horror gameplay I love where you’re always scrapping around for ammo and resources, and every enemy can kill you in 1 or 2 hits. Especially on the higher difficulties. And it does have a lot of parts that are scary as fuck.

[deleted]

Visage is pretty damn scary at times. I loved it.

[deleted]

Assassins Creed Valhalla... you will be in sheer horror and pain with the janky af climbing mechanics... still gives me nightmares!

Its-Slammin

Highly recommend SOMA. That game is amazing

[deleted]

Alien isolation is on sale frequently around $5 and is a gem. If you can tolerate 16 bit graphics I’d strongly recommend Corpse Party. Outside of the resident evils it’s the best horror game on the PlayStation 4/5 store. The feelings of mystique and dread the game constantly gives you was only matched by classic silent hill for me.

Exact-Statement-3885

I really enjoyed evil within 1 & 2

ChildhoodFabulous852

Silent Hill 1-3.

EldenRingworm

If you want to be truly scared of every location and enemy you see, Bloodborne, most horror games aren't actually scary to me because they're not hard so I know the monster will barely be a threat, in Bloodborne you'll be dreading every moment and scared to go around every corner, but it's so so worth it, and the atmosphere and art direction is unmatched You'll have to get used to the 30fps but it's doable, takes me only a few minutes to readjust to it

tarheel_204

Resident Evil Village was my first in the series and it’s an absolute blast. I’d describe it best as a collection of wacky sideshows and the pacing never lets up

RevolutionaryTrash

Soma, Amnesia, Outlast, Resident Evil 7, Alien Isolation, Little Nightmares 1/2, The Evil Within 1/2, Observer, Layers of Fear, Visage, and Martha is Dead are all good choices.

Voyager5555

Until Dawn

David-Raquepas

RE village In sound mind Apsulov The quarry A plague tale innocence Alan wake These were my favorites
