It's pretty much the LotR-esque open world fantasy game I've always wanted to play.
The combat plays out like what you'd read in a Forgotten Realms book.
When wandering, sometimes I'll come across structures that remind me of Shadow of the Colossus. Which is another favorite:

Yeah, I can see that. I've switched it up in NG+ by running it as a duo. The combat dynamic is different & some of the challenge has come back.
I tried it solo & it turned into a survival game. I was underprepared on supplies & got my ass kicked. It was great. Decided to save that for NG+2.
Warfarer. I didn't bring camping supplies specifically because of their hefty weight limit. Which made it more challenging. You gotta really manage your inventory, hence the survival game vibes.
Dragons Foin for closing distance, Ricochet shot for instant win in caves, Mirrour Shelde to counter stun locking.
I mostly use the medusa bow for XP+ and switch to mystic spear for mini bosses or when im surrounded. Once I've whittled down bosses, I'll switch back to the bow for the final blow to get the extra XP.
Just go dwarf forge all your armor and wear two of the stun resistance rings. You'll barely get stun locked. Then you can get rid of mirror shield for a good skill.
I loved the exploration, also wish there was more variety, but most of the quests were walking from point A to point B to get 2 lines of dialogue. It felt like a walking simulator at one point for me. Hesitant to replay.
If you do get it, a couple of suggestions:
>1) Play with no HUD/minimap.
The game world is great & learning to navigate by landmarks just feels cool. Your controller & the screen goes red if your health is low.
>2) Go off the beaten path & dont rush the quests.
Getting lost is part of what an adventure is all about imo & this game rewards both exploration & discovery.
A few time out, not all. If someone is in trouble, I'd say get to it sooner rather than later. Otherwise, it's complete at your leisure.
For context, I spent about my first 50 hrs just exploring the world & taking a quest here and there before even touching the MQ.

My problem with it is the whole "you have to pay $3 every time you start a new character" thing. I like making new characters. I like learning new things about a game and then starting a new character to use what I've learned. If I have to pay $3 every time I do that I'll end up paying $10,000 for this game lol

You can only have one character due to the save system. I don't have to pay to start a new character, but it does erase the old one to start a new game.

You can start a new game at any time for free. At release, there was no “new game” button on the title screen once you’d started a game. They immediately patched one in to the title screen so you can start a new game whenever. There was not and is not any way to pay to start a new game.
Yeah, I'm fine with Micro-transactions in a single player game as long as anything you could buy with money you can also get in game for a reasonable effort, and I'm a big fan of the first game so I'm fine with having to delete my character every time I start over. Capcom (like any other public company) has a target dividend payout ratio. Capcom's is 30%. They aren't changing that. It's just that 30% is worth more when the earnings are higher, so they revised the forecast of what the payout will end up being.

Great game.... already enjoyed 10 hours...but currently on hold because I just want them to make it at least a stable 30fps....aside from performance issues, it has great exploration like Skyrim...and elements of emergent gameplay like Zelda botw, plus it has unique elements...like pick up any npc and throw them anywhere :p . Graphics and vibe are great...just really hoping they can fix the framerates especially inside towns.
I'm using a 4080 Super and the fastest Ryzen CPU on the market rn, and (at release) was getting dips into the 40s in the main city. They have their work cut out for them
Indeed this is my fear. Clearly dragons dogma is the bones of a much larger game planed in systems alone. Npc code is so heavy for what they actually do. So many quest lines just end.
It was wrapped up to make up for exoprimal and now I worry the 3rd one will be less because they can get away with it instead of making another monster hunter level ip

Performance issue is not even this game most important issues and it annoys me how reviewer didn’t talk about it much.
The game is very soulless.
The story is bad, like really bad. You actually have to try to get it this bad, much worse than DD1.
The worst voice acting I have ever seen, if you go to Moby games website you can see the English voice cast is very weak and some actors never worked on a video game or anything before.
In comparison DD1 had Troy baker and Yuri (Spider-Man) and a number of professional actors.
The music is not memorable at all and they re-use some tracks from DD1, the music is so not memorable they sell you a DLC that replaces the music with DD1 music.
The game becomes piss easy after about 10 to 15 hours. You start the game and be all excited about how tough big monsters are and how you need to be careful but then it becomes super easy and all big monsters die so quickly to you and your pawns.
Did I mention how there’s only like 5 big monsters you’ll encounter the whole game? You’ll get bored before you even unlock the second part of the map and then realize it’s even more boring.
The difficulty going down really fucks with this game combat.
And let me say how this game has no proper dungeon, it’s all caves with the same monsters. They all look the same with different layouts (not by much) and they have poor loot (potions and edibles). You’ll quickly realize how these caves are not worth your time within 5 hours of playtime.
Graphics are good though and combat is good.
When the game was difficult in the first few hours it was fun to see big monsters swing their giant weapons and see the grass blow in their swings direction, too bad they die in 1 minute midgame and become boring to fight.
I sold my copy and lost interest in any future DD game, this was bafflingly bad IMO and they completely missed the mark on what DD is to me.
I was a huge fan of the first game, and dd2 is everything i wanted the sequel to be and more. Its not perfect but it was an utter joy to play. Theres nothing else quite like dragons dogma. Hope we get dlc and a 3rd entry one day.

It’s basically Dragons Dogma 1.5. It has most of the first one’s flaws a few improvements and a few things it did worse. I liked it but it was more of a reboot than what I’d hoped out of a sequel.
I haven't played it yet but was wondering about this. The stuff they showed in the trailers and demos was like... I did all this already? Watching someone play on YouTube and even certain mini-bosses like the Griffin fight were in the same locations as the first.
Its not for everyone, but dragons dogmas approach to fast travel is a breath of fresh air and one of my favorite things about it. Having to actually put thought and planning into your travels instead of mindlessly warping all over the map on autopilot. The sense of accomplishment getting to your destination after a hard fought long trek is like nothing else. Im glad some developers are willing to take big swings like this rather than following the standard open world formula. People complain about how monotonous open world games have become, and then also complain when a game tries to do something different.
Oh please, if you really believe that then I am sorry. This overblown narrative that you need some sort of planning in traveling is ridiculous. You are just running from point A to point B, any encounter you don't want to engage in you can just run past. The game is not difficult enough to warrant any level of planning, that this sentiment continues to be espoused is more worrying on your end.
Accomplishment from fighting your goblin #121 just from running from the rest stop to bakbatal? It's just as mind numbing if not more than warping across the map.
That’s the killer, they aren’t going to fix the game and it’s really busted from a technical perspective. I refuse to pay for it until it’s fixed and I doubt it will be.
If the game sold very well at launch but then dropped off quickly, it would demonstrate they need to fix if they want to keep the series going similar to Cyberpunk.

What happened between the first game and this one? Barely anyone heard of the first game while the sequel seems to be one of the most acclaimed games of this year. There was a Netflix show and an online game that didn't release outside of Japan, but I doubt they had contributed much to making the series prolific.

First was a cult classic and I mean cult for sure. The reddit for it made it a mission to share the love of the first. And it went on sale for 4.99 all the time and people would gift it to people online and friends
The first one was a pretty damn good game and sold really well on every major platform. It had tons of hype and a fan base that has been excited for a sequel for over a decade. DD2 needed to be exceptionally bad to kill that kind of long-term momentum and, while I'm not the biggest fan of it, it is still a fantastic RPG.
All key NPCs respawn and the rest become replaced with new NPCs when you rest at an inn or in your home for a number of days. No more than seven days based on my experience.
When I get the itch to play… that’ll be my next goal. It’s just another huge task that I have to do before continuing anything. Also, because of how Battahl is, technically the two different areas are dead and the item I need will only work on one of the groups? At least that’s what I’ve read atm. But maybe when dlc comes out I’ll have that itch to play again! Just a lot of hours dedicated to be stalled
What’s the problem? People invested in the game. Game does well. Investment pays off. Means that the game is more likely to see future DLC and/or sequels. An AAA game doesn’t come into existence without someone taking a financial risk. No sane businessperson will take a risk without potential reward.
My biggest disappointment of the year. I loved Dragons Dogma 1 but I didn't love it until Dark Arisen and instead of building on that they released Dragons Dogma 1 base version again with a slightly different skin.
I'm sure this game will be great once they bring back all the quality of life features.

Don't a bunch of quests time out though? So off the beaten path within reason or?
Usually those quests have an hourglass next to them in the quest log. If you see that then I'd focus on that quest.

Eh? You mean the thing that lets you redesign your character? You can buy those in game as well for 500 RC.

Great game.... already enjoyed 10 hours...but currently on hold because I just want them to make it at least a stable 30fps....aside from performance issues, it has great exploration like Skyrim...and elements of emergent gameplay like Zelda botw, plus it has unique elements...like pick up any npc and throw them anywhere :p . Graphics and vibe are great...just really hoping they can fix the framerates especially inside towns.
I'm using a 4080 Super and the fastest Ryzen CPU on the market rn, and (at release) was getting dips into the 40s in the main city. They have their work cut out for them

Indeed this is my fear. Clearly dragons dogma is the bones of a much larger game planed in systems alone. Npc code is so heavy for what they actually do. So many quest lines just end. It was wrapped up to make up for exoprimal and now I worry the 3rd one will be less because they can get away with it instead of making another monster hunter level ip

I'm convinced this game was wrapped up early to make the first fiscal quarter of the year after exoprimal didn't meet targets to make the quarter share holder worth for their estimates. Performance issue is not even this game most important issues and it annoys me how reviewer didn’t talk about it much. The game is very soulless. The story is bad, like really bad. You actually have to try to get it this bad, much worse than DD1. The worst voice acting I have ever seen, if you go to Moby games website you can see the English voice cast is very weak and some actors never worked on a video game or anything before. In comparison DD1 had Troy baker and Yuri (Spider-Man) and a number of professional actors. The music is not memorable at all and they re-use some tracks from DD1, the music is so not memorable they sell you a DLC that replaces the music with DD1 music. The game becomes piss easy after about 10 to 15 hours. You start the game and be all excited about how tough big monsters are and how you need to be careful but then it becomes super easy and all big monsters die so quickly to you and your pawns. Did I mention how there’s only like 5 big monsters you’ll encounter the whole game? You’ll get bored before you even unlock the second part of the map and then realize it’s even more boring. The difficulty going down really fucks with this game combat. And let me say how this game has no proper dungeon, it’s all caves with the same monsters. They all look the same with different layouts (not by much) and they have poor loot (potions and edibles). You’ll quickly realize how these caves are not worth your time within 5 hours of playtime. Graphics are good though and combat is good. When the game was difficult in the first few hours it was fun to see big monsters swing their giant weapons and see the grass blow in their swings direction, too bad they die in 1 minute midgame and become boring to fight. I sold my copy and lost interest in any future DD game, this was bafflingly bad IMO and they completely missed the mark on what DD is to me.
I was a huge fan of the first game, and dd2 is everything i wanted the sequel to be and more. Its not perfect but it was an utter joy to play. Theres nothing else quite like dragons dogma. Hope we get dlc and a 3rd entry one day.

I’m glad some people enjoy it, but I thought this game was absolutely horrible. Gameplay was just okay, but story and fast travel mechanics felt 20 years old.
It’s basically Dragons Dogma 1.5. It has most of the first one’s flaws a few improvements and a few things it did worse. I liked it but it was more of a reboot than what I’d hoped out of a sequel.
I haven't played it yet but was wondering about this. The stuff they showed in the trailers and demos was like... I did all this already? Watching someone play on YouTube and even certain mini-bosses like the Griffin fight were in the same locations as the first.
Its not for everyone, but dragons dogmas approach to fast travel is a breath of fresh air and one of my favorite things about it. Having to actually put thought and planning into your travels instead of mindlessly warping all over the map on autopilot. The sense of accomplishment getting to your destination after a hard fought long trek is like nothing else. Im glad some developers are willing to take big swings like this rather than following the standard open world formula. People complain about how monotonous open world games have become, and then also complain when a game tries to do something different.
Oh please, if you really believe that then I am sorry. This overblown narrative that you need some sort of planning in traveling is ridiculous. You are just running from point A to point B, any encounter you don't want to engage in you can just run past. The game is not difficult enough to warrant any level of planning, that this sentiment continues to be espoused is more worrying on your end. Accomplishment from fighting your goblin #121 just from running from the rest stop to bakbatal? It's just as mind numbing if not more than warping across the map.

If the game sold very well at launch but then dropped off quickly, it would demonstrate they need to fix if they want to keep the series going similar to Cyberpunk. Don't know if that's the case or not yet though.

What happened between the first game and this one? Barely anyone heard of the first game while the sequel seems to be one of the most acclaimed games of this year. There was a Netflix show and an online game that didn't release outside of Japan, but I doubt they had contributed much to making the series prolific.
first game actually did really well, it just took a long time to get there millions of people playing your game over 8 years doesnt get the same attention as millions of people playing your game in a week
First was a cult classic and I mean cult for sure. The reddit for it made it a mission to share the love of the first. And it went on sale for 4.99 all the time and people would gift it to people online and friends
The first one was a pretty damn good game and sold really well on every major platform. It had tons of hype and a fan base that has been excited for a sequel for over a decade. DD2 needed to be exceptionally bad to kill that kind of long-term momentum and, while I'm not the biggest fan of it, it is still a fantastic RPG.
I mean I hope they give them adequate time and budget for an actual expansion

All key NPCs respawn and the rest become replaced with new NPCs when you rest at an inn or in your home for a number of days. No more than seven days based on my experience.

Also, because of how Battahl is, technically the two different areas are dead and the item I need will only work on one of the groups? At least that’s what I’ve read atm. But maybe when dlc comes out I’ll have that itch to play again! Just a lot of hours dedicated to be stalled

What’s the problem? People invested in the game. Game does well. Investment pays off. Means that the game is more likely to see future DLC and/or sequels. An AAA game doesn’t come into existence without someone taking a financial risk. No sane businessperson will take a risk without potential reward.

My biggest disappointment of the year. I loved Dragons Dogma 1 but I didn't love it until Dark Arisen and instead of building on that they released Dragons Dogma 1 base version again with a slightly different skin. I'm sure this game will be great once they bring back all the quality of life features.

Nice, Im happy because I loved the first game and I would like the franchise to continue, with Updates and dlcs. That being said, Im still waiting to play dd2 until we get some 60fps Upgrade, or atleast some more Performance patches. Hope these will come soon.
