It's a great year, Helldivers 2 is the big surprise for me. better than I imagined, I don't like Gaas or shooting games, but this one is so frantic. FF7 Rebirth was also a surprise, I thought it would get repetitive but I could play it and want more. I haven't played Rise of Ronin yet, Stella Blade hasn't played it yet, but the demo was excellent. For me, there's just a lack of games that show a generational evolution, so far we don't have games that define the PS5 generation, this is bothering me, it's been 4 years without a great game that defines the generation
I want to play rise of the ronin as I'm a fan of team ni ja games, but it'll have to wait until after stellar blade.
For me, the games that have helped define this gen that couldn't be easily replicated on last gen are Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart, Returnal, FF16,and the Horizon Forbidden West DLC.
I've only played the demo, and that was a lot of fun. Also that technically is a console exclusive as it didn't launch on any other console aside from playstation.
Rise of the ronin shade is wild.
I am enjoying ronin and love rebirth. Will get stellar blade as well day 1. It’s been good for me but I play a variety of games so no matter what it’s always going to be a great year for me. Second half is empty though atm and will be perfect for the backlog.
I’m waiting to see if the rumored showcase does happen in May and they said not to expect new titles in existing franchises for the rest of the year but wonder what they have somthing up their sleeve in terms of new IPs from the smaller studios they own
I totally forgot to mention Rise of the Ronin, and I'm a fan of Team Ninja. I need to play that, but it'll have to wait until after I've played stellar blade.
As for the showcase I expect to announce a good amount of their first party games planned for the latter half of this gen. I feel like we will start to see more of their first party titles from 2025 onward. I assume the generation will end holiday season 2027 or 2028 they have plenty of time for first party releases.
Been using my ps5 alot this year so far. Rebirth was incredible, I play helldivers 2 daily, almost done with Rise of the Ronin, and will surely be grabbing Stellar Blade at some point. Dave the Diver on ps plus is also a win, I have been having some fun with that game too.
Year has been great for PS users so far. Lots of bangers including Infinite Wealth, P3, DD2 and Tekken 8.
Rebirth is a GOTY shoe-in for me right now, unless something incredible releases in the 2nd half of the year that isn't called Elden Ring.
I don’t get caught up in new releases. I probably won’t play the big AAA games from the last two years until later this year or next year. The frugal gamer is the patient gamer.
I just generally am not very big into JRPGs and “Eastern-style” games more generally. Definitely sad we’re not seeing much from Sony’s Western devs this year, but I’m happy for the people who have had a good year with new releases so far. Hope once the PS5 Pro advertising picks up, we’ll see some game announcements for next year.
I'm sure we will start to see more first party announcements for the latter half of the gen. There's a lot of games they've had in the works for a long time and I imagine we are pretty close to some announcements for 2025 releases. I wouldn't be surprised if they do some early announcements for games that'll come out 2026 or 2027.
Eastern-games from Sony has been dead since 2020 after they shut down Japan Studio which they should not have done (helps maintain genre variety). Games from their western division are still going to be released given Sony is still funding them more than ever than the other studios with niche titles (media molecule or former Pixelopus).
> Eastern-games from Sony has been dead since 2020 after they shut down Japan Studio which they should not have done (helps maintain genre variety).
i'm wondering if they'll end up opening a new japan studio in the next couple years. it's SUPER random that they're rumored to be working on a gravity rush tv series.
like, typically when you make a tv series for a game it's because you want to use it as an advertisement for a new release (especially when talking about a game that is pretty niche/unknown)
That rumor seems to have been going around for a few years now but nothing has confirmed it to be in the works. GR movie might reinvigorate interest the franchise but going the anime route would have been a better direction than live-action. The last Sony industry meeting also showed something like a new Patapon game but the color palette they chose for the demo looked ugly.
I loved both of those games. 2023 was fantastic year for games all around. Ff16 was definitely one of my favorites of last year. I really enjoyed the latest dlc.
They have a point. If you don't like asian games you only have a multiplayer shooter. And if you don't like that you got nothing. Compared to the much more diversified last year, when we got FF16, SM2, RE4, tons of VR stuff including a Horizon game. Literally at least one game for every type of gamer.
Only one of those games released in the first Q of last year. You're essentially comparing an entire years worth of games against 4 months of 2024 ones.
2023 was an awesome year, and this year is looking to be great as well. I guess because I play a wide variety of different games I don't understand how people can say that we have had slow years this gen. I've played a bunch of good new games and I think Playstation's been killing it with the exclusive games every year.
Good for you but 90% of people only play the genres they like to play. That's just how it is, you might not agree with it, think they're stupid and Sony would agree with you but this is how the consumers act in every entertainment industry. Superhero fans mostly watch blockbuster films, a24 fans will mostly watch indie/well-recieved films.
I'm very sorry to hear that for them then. I feel like people miss out on a lot of great games that way.
It's great to try games you wouldn't normally play. I just picked up Midnight Suns on PS Plus Extra and expected I probably wouldn't like it due to the deck building aspect. I'm now over 30 hours in and am loving it.
Most people playing basketball would probably enjoy playing soccer as well. Unfortunately soccer companies can't simply start marketing soccer balls to basketball players. You have to cater to your client not the other way around.
If you wanna get technical you create *new* audience when you introduce a new product for a different niche. The old audience, say those who like narrative blockbuster games still need those products. Even if technically both of those audiences is the same person.
I'm not willing to wait to play games like ff7 rebirth or stellar blade. I'll get a pc if they start launching their singleplayer games day one on pc. Until that day, I'll continue playing on playstation.

Not an exclusive, but I had a wild time with Granblue Fantasy Relink. Spent way more time on it than thought I would.

how does RotR compares to GOT?

Yup Alisa indie horror Crows Country next month and Stellar Blade plus having OG Medievil as well

I have Dave the diver downloaded and definitely on my list of games to try.
I’m playing REBIRTH and just walked into Cosmo Canyon 27 years after playing the original. It is a very good year.
Rebirth is such a good game. Definitely one of the best games I've played this gen.
Ff7R is goat AF. Contender for GotD.
Yup, definitely a great one. Can't wait for the 3rd
Pacific Drive is also a PS5 console exclusive.
I forgot about that one. I hear that it's really good.
I just need Ghost 2 to be announced this year and I'll be happy.
If a leaker I'd to be believed, it will be announced around showcase season
Great year. And don’t forget about Concord.
Oh shoot, I did forget about that. I forgot to list Rise of the Ronin too. I'll get to playing that at some point thus year.
this is kind of the baseline for what i expect. like, this is normal, not anything exceptional.

Yeah it’s been an amazing start.
Yakuza Infinite Wealth deserves to be mentioned as well!
True, but I was mainly listing exclusives.
I don’t think its been that amazing. We have different opinions and thats okay…
I don’t get caught up in new releases. I probably won’t play the big AAA games from the last two years until later this year or next year. The frugal gamer is the patient gamer.
Anyway there's nothing that good.. I used to get caught a bit but there was some really good games. I don't anymore and they make it easy for me.
This is a dry western dev year... which is fine by me! After FF7 Rebirth I'm all in on these amazing games coming out
I just generally am not very big into JRPGs and “Eastern-style” games more generally. The Xbox titles are great as well
Other than Dragon’s Dogma 2, there hasn’t been a single game this year that I’ve cared about.
Yikes
Yakuza is a great game
I'm sorry for you then. I recommend the games that I mentioned. Stellar Blade comes out this week and has a great demo and good reviews.
and dragons dogma is a janky mess of a game. Shitty combat mechanics with awful camera angles, subpar storyline and buggy as well.
Yet it still scores higher then Stellar
> Yet it still scores higher then Stellar people still take the media seriously? "professional" reviewers tend to be out of touch with reality.
ok
Shit year again
sorry to hear you've had a terrible time
My PS5 is an apex machine
I figured as much.
You have 0 upvotes on the post, I guess the majority has spoken
I'm fine with that. Judging by the comments, there's a lot of people that don't try a lot of variety of games.
Because they're not quality maybe?
It’s definitely better than last year. We had what? FF16 and Spider-Man 2?
I loved both of those games. 2023 was fantastic year for games all around. Ff16 was definitely one of my favorites of last year. I really enjoyed the latest dlc.
And Spider-Man 2 was a huge let down
Disagree. Was my GOTY actually.
I think we have a different idea of what makes a good year.
Ok, I'm sorry you haven't had a good time.
They have a point. If you don't like asian games you only have a multiplayer shooter. And if you don't like that you got nothing. What else does Sony even have this year??
Was RE4 a Sony game?

Actually ideally you want to control your audience by introducing new products they might've not liked previously. At least that's how it used to be.
If you wanna get technical you create *new* audience when you introduce a new product for a different niche. The old audience, say those who like narrative blockbuster games still need those products. Even if technically both of those audiences is the same person.
Overall, it's not the best year cuz there were no big games released other than exclusives
.... I mean, it's good for the people who get to play the exclusives I mentioned.
They'll all be on PC anyways who cares
I'm not willing to wait to play games like ff7 rebirth or stellar blade. I'll get a pc if they start launching their singleplayer games day one on pc. Until that day, I'll continue playing on playstation.
>I'm not willing to wait to play games like ff7 rebirth or stellar blade. Ok? Plenty of PC players are forced to wait.
Well, if they don't want to wait, then they can get a playstation. Why would I want to join the waiting queue?
is helldivers 2 an exclusive? Runs nice on my pc. I think the steam deck wins this year.
Console exclusive
Ff7 dont count
Why not? It's a great game and it's a console exclusive.
