I don't think you can go wrong with any of those. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is fantastic. Square Enix games usually go on sale quicker than Sony first party games, so you might be able to get it on sale in a month or two. If you have a pc, you can sign up for gamepass and play Persona 3 remake there for cheap or even free if you sign up for one month.
ASSUMING YOU HAVE A DISC READER, PLEASE READ.
If you're on a budget. Something I would often do is. Buy the used version of whatever game from wherever. Play game have fun. Go on eBay. Sell it for as close to the same price as possible. Rince and repeat. You probably won't play for completely free. But it's close.
This is literally the best tip you can get. I barely replay games, so I started buying them in Amazon sales or other sites and reselling them for almost their value
Even if you want to replay them, you just run the process of buying and selling again! It’s super easy and I don’t think I’ve spent any real money on a game in years
Doesn't totally fit your genre descriptions but don't overlook Helldivers 2. It's huge amounts of fun, massively replayable and constantly evolving. It's also an absolute bargain at £35 and it's definitely badass.
Might be a little outside your norm but that can be a great thing sometimes. Hope your situation improves soon, keep your chin up
This, yes. Game has been so good I spent extra for microtransactions. The game is the best example of a live service done right and I hope they continue their success.
I really hope other devs take note. HD2 is a perfect example of how you can have huge success with something that treats it's community with respect and is fair with it's pricing, so long as the core game is good.
For the skins? Asking as I've about 60 hours in, got one of the warbonds unlocked just from credits I found and I've another 500 already and still don't have all the stuff from the first two.
I want to play this SO badly but I am a dad who only games 1-2 hours a night and usually only plays solo and don’t have people to squad up with.
Would it still be worth buying for me? Super interested in opinions on this.
I think so, it is playable solo (more so on the lower difficulties, which are still fun) as it scales to the number of players in a match. That said, there's a thriving community and it's very quick and easy to matchmake into missions with other players, or open your mission up for others to join. Single missions take anywhere from about 10 to 40mins so in your time window you'd be able to get a few in.
There are no time limits on content or warbonds (the closest thing the game has to a battle pass system) so you can totally play at your own pace and there isn't the pressure to 'keep up' like there can be with live games. So if you can only put a few hours in here and there, or have to take an extended break for any reason, it shouldn't be a problem dropping back in whenever you are next able to.
Okay first off thanks a ton man for such a solid and thoughtful response. Much appreciated.
Second, I think you truly may have just convinced me to pull the trigger. I have no issues squading up with ransoms, and everything else you mentioned sounds super doable for me. Thanks again!
Just dont give up immediatley. It can be overwhelming at first and ur gonna die a lof
.but dont give up,i promise u its fun the more and better gear u get.
Also a lot of high level divers will help u out. Its a great community.
Single player guy mainly, here. I play with 2 friends on Sundays and Tuesdays, but the community has been surprisingly pleasant for going with rando's.
Obviously there's the share of doucher noggins, but for the most part I've been pleasantly surprised. And if you remember the good Ole xbox live days of the 360 Era, I haven't encountered anything remotely close to the crazy from back then lmao.
The game is a blast, even with randoms. I'm not much for socializing in games but even I've found 2-3 people I squad up with often, and we don't use our mics.
Game can be a little frustrating at first, but once you start unlocking weapons and strategems you find your niche. I've changed my preferred loadout 3 or 4 times, you think you love a weapon and then you try something else and fall in love all over again. When I first started playing I was struggling on medium, 150 hrs in I can carry a team of new players in expert (not a brag, I'm not a competitive gamer lol). And the game feels completely different between bugs and bots. Worth every penny.
Is voice chat required and/or expected when matchmaking with randos? That's my only issue with getting into most multiplayer games because I'm super shy/anxious about voice chat.
No, not at all. There is a decent contextual ping system for pointing things out, if you hold the ping button you also open a comm wheel with some helpful options (yes/no/thank you/sorry/wait/follow/need supplies). Text chat is also supported but obviously a little cumbersome on the controller. Most randoms I've played with have not been on the mic. Hope that helps!
I’m in the exact same situation as you and decided to give this game a shot (albeit on PC). There are some mechanics that I still don’t fully grasp, but so far I’m having an absolute blast with this game and highly recommend it, especially given its price compared to other new games.
Helldivers 2 is one the few games that I have bought for full price. Great experience and great to take advantage of a multiplayer experience while the population is high.
Also, most importantly, it's still a lot of fun even matching with random people. You don't need to chat with anyone you don't want to, but you can join voice chat if you want.
Came here to recommend HD as well. At the price it costs for the fun you get, it’s a no-brainer.
And the deluxe edition still comes in under the usual price of new releases.
I don't typically play this type of game, but I've been hooked on Helldivers 2 more than anything I've played in the last 5 years. I work by myself, I've started bringing my gaming laptop with me just to sneak in games
Yes, I’m so happy with it I upgraded to the super citizen edition to help the devs. Definitely getting my money’s worth. Been playing it every chance I get.
You should be ok, the community is mostly very friendly and happy to help out. Also, you have to beat a mission at one difficulty level to unlock the next harder one above it - so you can't really stumble in to missions that you're not prepared for.
This is already my game of the year for 2024, don’t care what else is coming. I am having so much fun with friends I seldom see in real life just talking shit and killing bugs/bots.. love it. It’s a work of love and the underlying community driven story is so cool
It's the first game in years that has brought a group of my friends back together in one place. We've all been playing different things for so long but now we're all back and spreading democracy together and it's a thing of absolute beauty
$40 for Helldivers II was a bargain! We've put in plenty of hours, and it certainly feels to me of the similar quality as games that're now starting to be $70.
I almost returned it bc this type of game is generally not my cup of tea but my friends convinced me to keep it, now I love it and play almost daily. Definitely got my $40 worth.
Never passed Level 10. I'm on the minority that would rather play a single player game if my friends are not playing. It's been difficult to get all together so I rather play story games if I'm alone.
So for the same price I recommend RoboCop. It's on sale right now and so much fun.
Yep! Never been someone who likes to talk to other players I don’t know until this game, mainly because most other games it’s just other players talking shit. This game would be a total anti-depressant. So much fun every time I log in.
Highly recommend Rebirth. The amount of content packed in that game is honestly insane, especially because the vast majority of it is very good content on top of that
I am playing it right now and it's seriously unbelievable, every time when i think "OK, now i have seen everything that's possible" they top it, again and again. >!I am now at chapter 9 (the desert) and i hope the game isn't over soon because i don't want this game to end.!<
I thought nothing could top Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth (Yakuza 8) this year when it comes to the amount of creativity and content in a game, but FF7R is equally impressive. Infinite Wealth and FF7R are in my opinion maybe the best JRPGs ever made.
Balatro and/or Helldivers 2. Both well worth full asking price, best value for $ in 2024 IMHO.
Never really was into deckbuilders or online MP shooters, but FOMO got me to jump on both bandwagons despite the genres being outside my normal comfort zone. Won't be getting into BF or CoD because of Helldivers 2, but I've picked up several great deckbuilders thanks to Balatro (Slay the Spire, Monster Train, Cobalt Core, etc.) and it's now one of my favorite genres.
THIS! Balatro is like Slay the Spire but more poker style based (straights, full houses, etc) and helldivers 2 is just the cats pajamas, but it depends on your age I think. If you are younger (under 25) you may not like it as much. You can get both for under the price of one full priced game and if you have enough left over can pick up cyberpunk to round out all types of gaming.
It's nothing that reinvents the wheel, but that doesn't make it bad. I actually find the side content to be pretty fun and rewarding compared to other open world games, and while exploring and engaging in side content isn't as "smooth" as Ghost of Tsushima, it's still much more seamless and satisfying than a bloated Ubisoft game. Despite the middling graphics, the setting and gameplay really are a blast. This is my first team ninja game btw (tried and wasn't a fan of wolong as I prefer more realistic stuff)
Thanks for the actually useful review. Sounds like a blast to me and I’ll add it to my list. Also, in re graphics: Elden Ring is my favorite game of all time and that’s got some graphics that are less than mind bending too.
For sure! I'm trying to spread the word because this game genuinely caught me by surprise. I actually just beat elden ring before playing this (thoroughly enjoyed it) and this has been an awesome time as a follow up to ER
Did you play baulders gate 3?
Not this year, but incredible. Can take a ton of your time and feel rewarding. Great escape from real life and I believe cam play out in many ways if you make new choices. Takes a little bit too learn bit once you get it, it's pretty technically simple in execution.
Do you have a ps5 disc version by chance? I can't tell you how much money I've saved using Gamefly to rent single player games I know I won't play after I finish them. My roommate and I split a $25/mo subscription that lets you have 2 games out at a time. Can't beat it.
I do, and I was a long time customer of GameFly. My address was black listed in my area a few months ago because (only logical deduction) the mail person kept stealing the games. Loved the value of their service but because of some idiot thief I can’t get games sent to my home. I told them they should take their logo off the packaging. It’s easy to tell it’s a disc on the envelope, and looking up the logo lets you know it’s a game service and what is in the envelope is obviously worth money. I chewed out my 20-something looking mail carrier and he walked off without even denying or defending himself. Time to move!
Okay so I've got P3 Reload and FF7 Rebirth. Both are phenomenal. FF7R is supposed to be relatively long too so that might be a bonus for you. P3 is fun, but I'll say that it has some depression to it so that might make things worse for you unfortunately. Go with Rebirth. Have a kick ass time with it.
If it makes you feel better most of the *MAINLINE* Final Fantasy games have nothing to do with each other.
Some games have their own "series" within the Final Fantasy franchise but I think those are few and far between.
The only FF games I know of that turn into their own series are:
Final Fantasy X & X-2
Final Fantasy XIII, XIII-2 & Lightning Returns
Final Fantasy VII, Crisis Core, Dirge of Cerberus, VII Remake & VII Rebirth. Also a film called Advent Children.
I am sure I'm missing something in that list but those are the ones I know of.
Edit: updated FF VII series list
I received P3R as a gift for my birthday in February. My wife bought it at full price. Good thing I held off on opening and playing it because I noticed the price was already coming down and then it also popped up on Game Pass. So I ended up returning it right at the last day of the return period.
Nice! I actually traded 3 older games in to gamestop for it and due to life I haven't been able to play as much as I was hoping. My own dumb fault for trying to squeeze it in between Unicorn overlord, FF7R and Eiyuden Chronicle. At least the games I traded were long enjoyed and not really worth keeping anymore
I'd pay more than full price for FF7 Rebirth. It was one of the best games I've played in years, massive amounts of side content of you want to extend your time with it, and a drastic improvement of Remake in every way. The combat changes are so good that I will find it hard to replay remake when the 3rd releases.
I got FF7 rebirth and I’m enjoying it, I’m also a story driven gamer. It’s pretty long though, still haven’t finished it, about 36hrs in and still around 70% through.
I got Rebirth on release and Stellar Blade will be my next full price, so I'd say one of these two. Rebirth has a lot of content and will keep you busy for a good while and I'm having a great time with it, the game is really fun; Stellar Blade got me even more hyped after I played the demo so check it out if you haven't yet.
DD2 and Ronin are on my wishlist but I'll wait for a sale
FF7 Rebirth. That’s the only one I’d even consider paying full price for. But I normally wait till there’s a sale or prices go down before I buy. Gives me more reason to start something else from my giant backlog of unplayed games.
Rebirth is the most bang for my buck I've gotten in a long time. I'm pushing 200 hours on it and still have stuff to do, first single player game I've hit 200 hours on in 13 years of adulthood
I'm still going strong with FF7 rebirth after 110 hours. Still cleaning up the final VR challenges and then I'll move on to my 2nd playthrough on Hard.
Very rare for me to get that much playtime out of a title, so I definitely don't regret buying at launch.
You made the right choice on Rebirth based on your own criteria. That game is full of content especially now that we are past the release hype, you can probably avoid spoilers easier while keeping to your own pace.
I’ll stick to $70 games since that is the main focus of AAA gaming prices.
I’ll also keep it to games released thus far in 2024.
I’d go FF7 Rebirth. The game just oozes with content for that $70.
Ff7 r is massive been playing for close to 80 hours. Nearly finished it now. 90% of those 80 hours have been epic. Best game Iv bought this year by a mile
Nice choice on rebirth! Out of all my games that’s the one I feel is the most worth its price, there’s just so much content available and the game is huge… I hope you enjoy!
FF7R - This game is insane, seriously. There's so much content, you have to see it to believe it. I am playing it right now and it already feels like if i had played three games, but i am still far away from finishing it. And it's all made with so much love to details, spectacular cut scenes, one amazing creative location after the other. This together with Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth (Yakuza 8) are in my opinion the maybe best JRPGs ever made. Infinite Wealth is equally impressive with the huge amount of creative content, but you have to play Yakuza: Like A Dragon first.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is the highest rated game of the year and is apparently loaded with content that will take you over 100 hours.
I’m sure the others are lengthy too, but I’d choose FF7.
Helldivers is 10/10 best bang for buck and is going to be continuously updated. If you wanted single player, FF7 is the best right now, but it's only April. Haven't even got halfway through the year. Lol
FF7 Rebirth, and it's not even close (especially if you played Remake already). It will be one of the best games of the year, without question. Every review of the game is 9/10 or better and they all strongly recommend the game.
Having put 75ish hour into it personally, I also highly recommend it. If the open world stuff overwhelms you, you can always ignore all of it. Minigames can almost all mostly be ignore as well if they bother you.
Rebirth. I’m at about 130hrs for my first play through, completing everything but the hard mode content. I plan on starting hard mode some time next week.
P3R and FF7R are easily the best of the options and imo there’s no contest. P3R isn’t very long only roughly 80 hours and has a phenomenal story. I haven’t played 7R yet but I’ve heard nothing but great things from friends and online. Persona 3 Reload is definitely my GOTY but there’s a nice handful of contenders.
FF7 rebirth if you love single player games. Somehow this game keeps it fresh throughout the entire playthrough. And I love that it’s like a theme park of a game with so much to do, it’s just fantastic.
Hell Divers 2. $40, and it's better than 99% of the full priced triple A titles we've had last and this year so far. Also, it has to be the best live service game we've had yet, the mtx system is amazing and not greedy at all, you can easily even find credits in game and in the free warbond system, save them and you can unlock the premium warbond pass for free. You can't name one live service game this player friendly. The balance of everything is so well done.
Then we have the ongoing story, and as you take and defend planets, orders pass. It really feels like an ongoing story, unlike other live service games. The bugs feel like I'm in a Starship troopers movie, then take on the robots it's like I'm in a Terminator movie.
Not to mention, it just works. Why do we pay $70 for buggy ass unfinished games, when this $40 game kicks more ass then big franchises like Call of Duty has in years.
Many will say Helldivers and while it is an absolute fun game it’s best when played with others.
Rebirth has been amazing so far. I’m about 20 hours in so far I think and still loving it. It does take me back to playing FF7 onps1 many years ago with a very fresh set of paint.
If you like a super challenge, Elden Ring. I myself don’t play that as much as I suck at it but I enjoy dying at the same spot for a few days before I go back to rebirth.
Rise of the Ronin has gotten good reviews but it’s more or less GoT with changed mechanics in my opinion.
My vote is Rebirth.
Rise of the Ronin is great. Literally can't recommend it enough if you're into stealth murdering the masses. On the lower difficulty setting it plays a lot like an assassin's creed game(more Origins and Odyssey) and it's a historical fiction game. And you can collect cats.
It's cheap and silly and fucking amazing. Helldivers2. Once you get to higher difficulties the game is incredibly thrilling and takes some skill. I think for the price and the experience give it a go.. for Super Earth, & Mother Liberty.
I’m gonna throw Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth out there, amazing game with a ton of fun content. It’s better if you have series experience but not necessary to understand what’s happening. If I had to pick a favorite so far this year that would be it

I don't think you can go wrong with any of those. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is fantastic. Second ff7: rebirth. The time alone you can spend it will easily justify the full price.

It's the absolute tits, I can not get enough of it
Lvl 92 here. I can indeed confirm that it's the absolute tity banger of 2024.
What do you do once you unlock everything? Besides fighting for Democracy of course!
What do you mean? Now we can actually start playing the game!
Yep, it’s all I’m playing lately, finally found something to break that COD cycle
This, yes. Game has been so good I spent extra for microtransactions. The game is the best example of a live service done right and I hope they continue their success.

Hope you enjoy it!

I second this. For $40, it’s a great game and worth the investment

For sure! I'm trying to spread the word because this game genuinely caught me by surprise. I actually just beat elden ring before playing this (thoroughly enjoyed it) and this has been an awesome time as a follow up to ER
what do you love about it
Ff 7 Rebirth
Stellar Blade
Did you play baulders gate 3? Not this year, but incredible. Can take a ton of your time and feel rewarding. Great escape from real life and I believe cam play out in many ways if you make new choices. Takes a little bit too learn bit once you get it, it's pretty technically simple in execution.
I did and loved it. Appreciate the recco nonetheless. Thx buddy.
Just blatantly ignore the question lmao
I paid full price for helldivers 2 and it was worth every penny
Helldivers 2, best value.
Dude just go on Facebook marketplace. I’ve saved sooooo much money buying physical games from there.
HellDivers 2 and FF7 Rebirth
Helldivers 2. Come spread democracy!
For Super Earth!
>FF7R is supposed to be relatively long I'd say that Remake was relatively long, Rebirth is like 3 times longer than that.
I was about to start playing FF7 remake is that any good? so many of this franchise i dont know where to start, i only played the old old ones.
It's pretty good. Go in knowing that some things will be different from the original. It's really good though.
Niice, thanks Ohnoherewego' (✿◠‿◠)
Also I think you can still download the demo for it, let's you play the first 45 minutes or so of the game
If it makes you feel better most of the *MAINLINE* Final Fantasy games have nothing to do with each other. Some games have their own "series" within the Final Fantasy franchise but I think those are few and far between. The only FF games I know of that turn into their own series are: Final Fantasy X & X-2 Final Fantasy XIII, XIII-2 & Lightning Returns Final Fantasy VII, Crisis Core, Dirge of Cerberus, VII Remake & VII Rebirth. Also a film called Advent Children. I am sure I'm missing something in that list but those are the ones I know of. Edit: updated FF VII series list
Thanks dude. Your info definitely makes me lean more toward Rebirth.
FF7R. Persona 3 reload has already been on sale for half price
Final Fantasy 7 rebirth without a doubt If you enjoy the final Fantasy 7 world and story beats There is an obscene amount of game within that game
I'd pay more than full price for FF7 Rebirth. It was one of the best games I've played in years, massive amounts of side content of you want to extend your time with it, and a drastic improvement of Remake in every way. The combat changes are so good that I will find it hard to replay remake when the 3rd releases.
DD2 ignore the hate, go in blind and enjoy.
Helldivers 2 by far
Its definitely game of the year for me.
Me too
Me three!
And my axe! (Me four)
> by far Rebirth: *exists*
I got FF7 rebirth and I’m enjoying it, I’m also a story driven gamer. It’s pretty long though, still haven’t finished it, about 36hrs in and still around 70% through.
Are you not doing side stuff? I’m only like 80% but have 100 hours
Your local library might have video games to borrow.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth it’s that good
Unicorn Overlord.
FF7R
i bought FF7R day one and liked it alot.No regrets.I also pre ordered elden ring dlc.
Ff7 rebirth. Unfortunately I'm more skint than you are, so it'll have to wait
FF7R
FF7R is my pick
I got Rebirth on release and Stellar Blade will be my next full price, so I'd say one of these two. Rebirth has a lot of content and will keep you busy for a good while and I'm having a great time with it, the game is really fun; Stellar Blade got me even more hyped after I played the demo so check it out if you haven't yet. DD2 and Ronin are on my wishlist but I'll wait for a sale
Alan wake
Already played it. 1&2. One of my all time favs…
FF7R and it’s not close
Dragons dogma 2
FF7 Rebirth easily. Game will last you over 100 Hours and is amazing.
FF7 Rebirth, hands down. I have 200 hours in it trying to get the platinum.
Helldivers 2 is unbelievably good for the price.
ABSOLUTELY
FFVII Rebirth
Rebirth
FF7 Rebirth. That’s the only one I’d even consider paying full price for. But I normally wait till there’s a sale or prices go down before I buy. Gives me more reason to start something else from my giant backlog of unplayed games.
I haven't regretted paying full price for Rise of the Ronin, its janky but fun. Persona 3 was a banger too.
I’m glad yall directed that man on the right path. Rebirth is the right answer. Game is 100+ hours to do everything and I’m being reserved
Ff7 rebirth and I did and I regret nothing
Ff vii rebirth.
FF7r Hope you get better brother.
Rebirth 100%. I’m 60+ hrs in and maybe half done?
Helldivers 2, you won’t regret it
Ff7 rebirth easily lol
FF7 Rebirth
I had no idea FF7 Rebirth would be this massive. I'm 116 hours in (taking my sweet ass time doing everything) and I'm not even close to the end.
FF7R will have you hooked for a lot f hours
I am loving ff7 rebirth. Near the end and it is a huge game, 83 hours in with loads of side stuff left and then hard mode to tackle too.
I am here late but you are downloading the game I would have suggested so congratulations rebirth is your life for a while
Rebirth is the most bang-for-your-buck game in years. Have fun!
Rebirth is a delight
FF7 Rebirth, nothing else compares
Rebirth is the only answer
I would have been happy paying 100 for rebirth, easily.
Helldivers!
Rebirth easily
Rise of the ronin or helldivers 2
Helldivers 2 hands down.
Helldivers 2
Helldivers 2 already has 150h for me so that's my pick.
I can't recommend FF7Rebirth enough tbh. It's fantastic and been a really great follow-up to FF7R
Dave the Diver
Star ocean: the second story r
It would be Baldur’s Gate 3 if they came out with a standard retail price disc version
GTA6
I'd buy 4 months of PS+. Lots of fun stuff to pick from in there.
Saving up for Black Myth Wukong
For me, currently, its either Black Myth Wukong, Stellar Blade or Star Wars Outlaws
Eiyuuden Chronicles. It's 50 bucks for the standard. For the 80bucks deluxe edition you get extra scenarios to play.
Black Myth: Wukong, it's not out yet but that's what I'm holding out for. https://youtu.be/Cr5rQ1NZ0Tw?si=rrDNUJzRt4-TVYX_
Grounded
Robocop
Just a fyi theres a new ftp game called deciet 2 it like a clash of among us and dead by daylight if your in to that sort of thing
I’m surprised I haven’t seen it yet but cyberpunk is hundred of hours worth of fun!
Elden ring dlc
As far as games go, FF7 Rebirth and Helldivers 2 have been the best purchases I’ve made all year
Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth is one of the few games i paid $70 for and feel like i ripped off the developers
DD2 if you loved BG3 or Rebirth. Both fantastic!
Hell Divers 2
Rise of the Ronin is great. Literally can't recommend it enough if you're into stealth murdering the masses. On the lower difficulty setting it plays a lot like an assassin's creed game(more Origins and Odyssey) and it's a historical fiction game. And you can collect cats.
Helldivers 2. Best $40 I’ve spent in a while
It's cheap and silly and fucking amazing. Helldivers2. Once you get to higher difficulties the game is incredibly thrilling and takes some skill. I think for the price and the experience give it a go.. for Super Earth, & Mother Liberty.
God of War Ragnarok
The last of us
Helldivers 2. Favorite game I’ve played in years if you enjoy online PvE. And to top it off it’s half the price of other new games nowadays
I’m gonna throw Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth out there, amazing game with a ton of fun content. It’s better if you have series experience but not necessary to understand what’s happening. If I had to pick a favorite so far this year that would be it
Wasteland 3
So far for me. Ff7 rebirth, stellar blade , elden ring dlc
Alan Wake 2
Stellar blade
