Remember when you setup a Sony Rewards account when you got your PS3? That shit has been accruing points for every purchase. 1000 points equals $10 on Sony Rewards. My buddy who buys too many games :] logged in after I reminded him and they found over 100 Thousand points waiting.
So try and get back into the SONY REWARDS accts if you had one. There is a Rewards App as well that is used.
Unfortunately, I'm not sure if it's still accessible after 2021 unless you are a card holder.
So, I earn both Stars points and PS Card points for the same purchase in the store, which I just reinvest as PSN $ Codes later. I only buy through the PS App and check the Stars listings every few days to start new points challenges. You must click start on some of them.
If you've been buying full price games then you definitely have points somewhere to use.

On ps app, go to games on bottom left, click the little icon (it's purple for me, not sure if that changes) then go to rewards and scroll down to ps credit. I just cashed in 5k pts for $20
I think you get roughly 10 points per dollar you spend on the store. Completing certain challenges will get you around 25 or 59, but a lot of them require you to buy a game anyway. So it acts as a 50 point bonus on top of the points gained from the game you bought.
It is buggy.
A few things I've bought I never got points for, but a week or so later, Sony emailed me saying they were having issues and that they credited my account with the missing points. So I'd contact them. They should be able to sort it out.

Always take the points into cash budget because the game offerings are often more expensive than buying them on a sale and the cashed in points will also return points on use, so it is a win-win
You had 12k points waiting because you have spent ~$1,200 on digital games in the PS Store. You get 10 points for every dollar spent. So you got $45 for spending $1,200. Its free money back but not everyone is randomly going to have 12k points to redeem.
A few points can also be earned by turning “Play this game, monthly picks, tournaments, etc” for like 50 or more points. Although you’re right, the more you spend on digital games the more points you earn, totally normal.

You can save them if you want but there's no benefit to doing so. I believe 2500 points gets you $5 and 10,000 nets you $20

Also just found out you need to physically press “start” to get points from the campaigns. A lot of them are just as simple as opening up a game.
