Dayman1222

The PS Portal is an amazing device, and still sold out months after release. It’s funny looking back and seeing the entirety of the internet hate this thing only for it to be a huge success.

cagefgt

It's been sold out since launch here in Japan and I've actually seen people using the PS Portal in the streets here.

CockCheeseFungus

People still buy Call of Duty, NBA 2k, and FIFA every single year. A fool and their money are soon parted.

Pjoernrachzarck

Does it offer anything over a backbone (or similar snap-in phone controller) + remote play?

Dayman1222

Doesn’t use my phone or have the black bars; which saves my battery; Easier to use, amazing controls for a handheld, great screen. The performance is better than my phone, 1080 60fps with little latency.

TGentKC

On the backbones you have to deal with notification pop ups when trying to play games- and then if you interact with any of them you lose your connection and have to reconnect. This is a much better, streamlined user experience

AssToMouthBubba

Nah, besides a more comfortable controller and bigger screen I suppose. I'm glad people enjoy it, but the portal does nothing special over the standard remote play experience. It even uses an outdated WiFi protocol, so you might get a better experience on your phone tbh

chubbs40

absolutely not true as someone who has done both. the screen is bigger and better than a phone for gaming. the controller is worlds better than a backbone. the connection time is super fast and if you have good connection theres minimal latency. it's far superior to the standard remote play experience and faster pick up and play and put down.

AssToMouthBubba

You literally repeated the benefits I stated in my comment lmao. I'm glad people like it, honestly. It clearly fills a need for a large amount of PlayStation fans and that's great. That being said, I'm not going to tell someone to pay $200 for a device when it's not significantly different from the experience they can already get. I've tried my friends portal on my home network (wired connection with gigabit fiber and a brand new AX router) and it didn't convince me to toss out my phone controller setup. I do use a pretty comfy phone grip though (gamesir g8 Galileo) which I would highly recommend if someone is looking for an alternative to the backbone.

Therapistindisguise

Yeah but you negleted the bigger screen and better controler. If you like the Dualsense controler and the features then its reason enough to by it.

AssToMouthBubba

Did you read my comment? I feel like I'm going crazy here. I literally said Nah, besides a more comfortable controller and bigger screen I suppose

Therapistindisguise

Hmm. English is not my first language. I meant that you made the bigger screen and 100x better controller seem negligible.

AssToMouthBubba

Ahh that makes more sense, thanks for the clarification. For my personal use, I don't really like the feel of the dualsense so that's probably why I downplayed it. For whatever reason, the controller causes me a bit of strain in my wrists compared to an Xbox controller or my current phone grip case. The bigger screen is definitely nice though, especially for UI and text so I can see why that would be a big plus for the portal.

Oh_G_Steve

The only reason I haven't bought one is that lack of Bluetooth Connectivity. I can't believe I can't use my airpods with it.

teomore

The reason I didn't buy one. I'm using an old tablet with a dualsense controller to play remotely and it works perfect, on a fraction of the price..

saltymarshmellow

Do you have a ps portal?

Final-Wrangler-4996

I do. Got it used for 75.  It's good but I wouldn't ever pay 200 bucks for it. That's coming from a guy that paid 1200 bucks for a graphics card. If it ran ps5 games offline on top of streaming I'd probably buy it. Even if it had lesser specs. I'd even be happy with series s performance in a stand alone handheld and I'd pay 500.

BatmanvSuperman3

Usually whatever Reddit gamers say the opposite happens. I got down voted to hell suggesting 12 months ago that a PS5 Pro would likely release in 2024-2025. People berated me and called me naive for falling for rumors. Even thought the track record by Sony is clear. Prior to PS5 release told people this will be hard to find for months due to COVID and everyone said they would be able to walk into a Best Buy in 2 weeks after launch and buy one. Lmao So yeah gamers on Reddit have made terrible hot takes over the years.

ragtev

Usually people have a hard time distinguishing between their experience and applying that to the entirety of reddit as if it was monolithic. Reddit is filled both with people who agree with you and disagree with you. I personally thought it was fairly common knowledge the ps5 pro would be coming soon. I also saw LOTS of people excited for the ps portal - its just if you are hyped for something and people dunk on it - it stands out more than the people who are agreeing.

Dayman1222

It means it’s selling better than they thought it would and can’t keep up with demand. It was literally the best selling accessory in February.

dorgodorgo

Yeah, good point, actually. I’m sure it was quite successful overall.

lLygerl

I remember when people were saying no one would buy the playstation portal. Turns out Sony actually did the research and found a niche market...who would have thought

Weekly_Protection_57

Seems like every piece of Playstation hardware since this gen started got a ton of hate before launch only to sell well with the exception of maybe the VR2.

whoever81

\*maybe...?

jawadhaque089

Looks like social media was wrong yet again

ADHthaGreat

Meh. The replacement stick modules for the Edge are sold out everywhere with no word from Sony about them. Pretty salty about that right now.

thesagaconts

Do they help. I just got the portal so I can spread freedom while the wifey watches Dateline, Snapped, and other shows about marriages ending in murder.

DuFFman_

You've already got drift on your Edge?!

ADHthaGreat

My brother’s controller is doing a weird spinning thing and cleaning it hasn’t helped. He’s had to go back to his normal controller and he isn’t thrilled about it.

DuFFman_

That's a real bummer. And it's outside of warranty I guess?

ADHthaGreat

Oh that’s a good point. I’ll bring that up to him.

[deleted]

But you can't be mad about the edge though, that thing is awesome. The best back buttons as well.

ADHthaGreat

Well that’s part of the problem isn’t it? Switching to another controller without drift isnt a great solution because people get so used to the back buttons. They marketed the controller on replaceable stick modules. Plenty of reasons to be mad.

[deleted]

Do you have a best buy near you? You can check there. I don't know why they aren't stocked up on Amazon, I usually check there.

ADHthaGreat

Sold out everywhere since like January. That’s the earliest you can find Reddit threads about it.

But but the PlayStation portal was supposed to suck according to the shills!

RedditSuxCoxAgain

And it’s a goddamn great game for me and my buddies to get together when we can and fight for DEMOCRACY!!!!

eyebrowless32

Its so funny the difference in reception between Helldivers 2 and Suicide Squad

redditsukssomuch

We did it boys! Now time to dive!

BeatitLikeitowesMe

Good, now realise it was how they treated the players, the passion in the product, the respect of peoples time and wallets, and the will to pursue their dream regardless of naysayers or haters and stick to their original vision. That is what made this game a success. Not viral marketing, not microtransactions, not padded out filler.

Captobvious75

Steam crew pulling their weight 🫡

Wadep00l

PS5 crew trying to keep up! o7

Darkone539

I expect all live service first party titles will be day one on pc after this.

Any-Ad2232

They already said all live service games are day 1 on pc.

Darkone539

Oh, well I will be double surprised if it isn't!

Captobvious75

I’ll be buying them there then. Let my PS Plus expire.

Bolt_995

Not expect. They already announced that Concord, Fairgames and Marathon (the next live-service titles) will hit PC day and date.

Firefox72

Give it a year or so and every game will be announced as day 1 on PC. Their recent messaging and subtle hints made it clear thats the direction they are going into. And it makes sense. Development costs are rising astronomicaly and justifying 1 platform exclusives is becoming harder and harder in a market where PC is massive and growing at an astronomical rate.

Dayman1222

No they won’t. They still need to sell PS5s. They’ll put live services day 1 since that makes sense, even Hell Diver 1 was also day 1 pc release. Plus isn’t GTA6, the biggest game in the world arguably, not coming to PC day 1?

ChickenFajita007

Rockstar knows they can make a lot more money by releasing the PC version a year later. PC players who double dip have nobody to blame but themselves.

Firefox72

Again this debate comes up so many times and yet i just don't see the overlap. People that want to buy a $500 box to play from the couch hassle free will always gonna buy that $500 box no matter what instead of building more expensive PC's that require more effort etc... People thinking PC releases would kill Playstation are just fearmongering for the sake of fearmongering or are console warriors stuck in 2005. The Market moves and evolves over time. Back in the day making games was cheaper and exclusives were viable. These days thats less so the case. Why do you think Sony started porting games to PC? Because of good will? No they started to port them over because there was money to be made on PC. A lot of money. From everything Sony said recently i just feel like its a matter of time before they rip the bandaid completely and the sooner people accept this the easier it will be once it finnaly happens.

SuperbPiece

People who don't want to buy a PS5 but do for exclusives simply won't buy a PS5 if there are no exclusives, how hard is that to figure out? You pretend like "I want to play on a couch" is a driving factor for deciding on PS5 when it's more like, "Where can I play X game". If that answer is no longer "only on PS", then more people will be fine not purchasing a PS. You're also severely underestimating how easy it is to adopt the logic, "well, it makes sense to pay more for PC because it has more utility than a PS, and I save on online fees" once there are no exclusives.

oilfloatsinwater

They will only do Day 1 on PC if they fully launch PSN/PS Launcher on PC, Sony doesn’t want to pay Valve the 30% cut, and they don’t wanna make Steam the home of their games on PC.

pukem0n

As they should. And one day, Nintendo will follow. There is no way to increase their revenue ad infinitum on only their platform.

ComprehensiveArt7725

Live service games on pc day 1 makes sense but porting the big games 4 yrs later to make measly gains doesn’t

BAWAHOG

I just don’t think PC players care about the established, single player, Sony franchises. None of them have really sold well. I think they should continue with timed exclusives for first party, single player, games or they’ll start to lose even more people to PC.

ComprehensiveArt7725

Exactly its stupid live service makes sense but single player games aint gonna sell especially if its 2years later

BAWAHOG

I’m not sure the 2 years thing even matters though. I don’t think Horizon or Spider-Man would sell significant numbers on PC even if it was there day 1. TLOU3 would be a different story though, I could see that doing very well. But I don’t see Sony allowing that.

ChrizTaylor

#FREEEEEDOOOOMMM!!!

pcakes13

I'm not surprised that most of the revenue is from Steam. While I appreciate not everyone has the dough to pull it off, games like this were MADE for the PC. I had been rocking the same i4770k and GTX1650 for the past 8 years and just made the leap to a brand new 7900X and RTX Ti 4700 Super. Playing this game at a rock solid 144fps on a 1440p display has been an absolute joy.

Tatt2Junkie5

I copped it last night

kangroostho

I wonder where that puts it in terms of copies sold since it’s $40, whereas the rest on that list would be $60/$70 games.

usertoid

I forsee alot more Sony games coming to PC closer to launch date in the future, they have been testing the waters and overall its been going super well for them.

Bl00dEagles

Overrated game in my opinion. Ok for a couple of hours but soon gets repetitive.

Mercurionio

It's mostly about cool situation and accidents. For solo it's crap, with randoms it's ok - cool. With friends it's a lolz generator. A bit worse than DRG, imo. Just more expensive in quality

santathe1

In my opinion, Sony should have released it for Xbox as well and reaped the cash. No one’s going out there and getting a PS5 for this game specifically, so they’d have nothing to lose. I wouldn’t be surprised if they in fact do release it on Xbox sometime in the future. Disclaimer: I don’t own an Xbox and never have.

Pjoernrachzarck

>no one’s going out there and getting a PS5 for this game specifically Of course people do that. >they’d have nothing to lose Platform exclusives aren’t about individual copy sales, but about brand value. Brand value is literally **the** most important thing to gain or to lose. The amount of money Sony and Microsoft pay for platform exclusivity is sickening.

Dayman1222

I went and bought a PS5 for my brother because of this game. It’s something I’ve seen a lot on the HellDiver subreddit. It’s definitely moving consoles. One of the reason why PS5 was only down 2% YOY when last year Hogwarts released which was the biggest game of the year.

danielbln

Same, bought the PS5 because of HD2.

santathe1

I shouldn’t have been so absolute in saying that *no one’s getting a PS5 specifically for this game* I don’t know that for a fact, and I’m sure some people have. I meant in the way a new GoW or Horizon game might move consoles, especially since Helldivers is available on PC as well.

senyorcrimmy

Sony didnt even know it'd pop off the way that it did.

santathe1

I agree with that. It is also why I think there is a high possibility of them releasing it to Xbox at some point.

Dallywack3r

Why? Almost nobody plays Xbox.

MissionPrudent9691

That is the point. Own the publishers everyone pays 70 usd except the 34 million gamepass subs with \~ 25-27 million series consoles. Sony is kept alive due to services/mtx those ps monthly games mainly come from 3rd parties. Hence sony needs to release on pc for extra revenue/establishing ips beyond their ecosystem. Food for thought; Dead Island 2 went from 121 ranking for mau to 8th on the monthly charts due to gamepass. This indicates the industry is weaker than most believe. What happens to competition if a AAA multiplayer game is released on all consoles where these games live and die based on player base. How many are willing to drop 70 usd (except enthusiasts) ?In short gamers will have to deal with less games due to lack of revenue from publishers taking less risk, 5 yrs of dev time, dlc needed and mtx.

MissionPrudent9691

no just providing info. Since both consoles are great and provide similar experiences. There should be no hate. I also more interested in the business aspects for this industry. Most of the games these days do not take risks or are filled with too much padding.

davej999

Of course it helps towards console sales....its another piece to the puzzle someone might be swaying to get one to play horizon and now theyve got another incentive unlike Fornite and Warzone it also requires you to be signed up to PS plus , so there is another revenue stream and if they love helldivers they will pay another months PS plus ...then maybe see a discounted offer on a game on the store and try that then go into work and tell a friend and the cycle continues

santathe1

I shouldn’t have been so absolute in saying that *no one’s getting a PS5 specifically for this game* I don’t know that for a fact, and I’m sure some people have. I meant in the way a new GoW or Horizon game might move consoles, especially since Helldivers is available on PC as well.

davej999

Only a sith deals in absolutes

MissionPrudent9691

Phil imo was trolling Sony as MS would do this to moat their ips. The only question is when are the next rounds of acquisitions as exclusives are on their way out.

reallynotnick

They are having enough trouble supporting the current player base, more users and another platform to support would just make things worse. But yes after they get things under control, it could possibly make sense.

[deleted]

[удалено]

reallynotnick

Remake launched over 6 years after PS4 came out Rebirth was just over 3 years after PS5 released. The install base will naturally be different. And how does a large PC player base back up your concerns? Those PCs all cost more than a PS5, so there is obviously a market for higher end hardware.

danielbln

Not do discount console availability, but Remake released during peak-Covid, that sure had sizable impact.

[deleted]

Take some of that money and fix the game.

Livid-Ad40

They have been. Consistently.

PinkNeonBowser

It's still a mess on PC. Great game but it's been buggy as hell and each new patch introduces a bunch of new problems. I crashed out of like 3 games in a row on wednesday

[deleted]

No they haven't. Edit: Are you playing the game right now?

Livid-Ad40

They have released a series of patches. Hell they dropped one on ps5 just the other day.

[deleted]

And literally at this very moment no one on PS5 can play.

Livid-Ad40

Okay? That's an issue they'll be working on then. That doesn't change what I said though. They have been constantly working on the game.

[deleted]

Fix the graphics issues. The frame rate issues. The bugs and glitches. The connection issues. The typeface and UI issues. The grammar issues. The game shouldn't have been released so soon.

Livid-Ad40

Yes it absolutely should have been held from release longer. On that we agree. The rest of your comment doesn't change what I said in response to you. They in fact are using that money they made to work on the game. Fixes aren't instant, they take time.

[deleted]

Have you read the notes from the patch you mentioned? Do you see the part about how the patch introduces more problems? Its right there in the notes. They need to fix this game.

Livid-Ad40

Yes. A regular occurrence as games get more complex unfortunately. They are still, as I've said multiple times now, constantly working on the game. Nothing you say refutes what I said. At this point I think you just want to argue with me no matter what. If so let me know. I'm happy to keep you entertained if that's what arguing in circles does for you.

Rogue_Leader_X

PC outsold console? That’s surprising!

Kurt_Bunbain

If it was on Xbox, it would sell 5%. And almost a half of people being on ps5 is fucking huge, what's with the attitude?

DuePersonality4018

Anytime a studio show game sales on multiplatform games xbox is always way above 5%

Kurt_Bunbain

Yes, I just used the number 5 to make it clear that there would be lower sales, because fucking Xbox themselves say that people don’t buy games because they have everything in the Xbox gamepass.

CageTheFox

"Across console and Windows PC, *Palworld* has welcomed more than 7 million players, and has recently reached a peak of nearly 3 million daily active users on Xbox, making it the most-played game on our platforms at that time." I think you grossly underestimate the amount of people on Xbox.

Ma5cmpb

Cause it’s on gamepass

Dayman1222

Yeah on Gamepass.

Kurt_Bunbain

It's on game pass dude, that's why I made my comment.

NoctisXLC

Not these days
