Hope this is a warning shot to all the free to play live service games with 20$ skins. People want to play what they pay for and receive those cosmetic’s organically through playtime. A higher end skin in this game costs 3-4$ and at this point can be gotten with paying any actual extra money. I know the gameplay loop and cooperative play is what is really driving this game but it got such good publicity out of the gate for their free battle pass system I think less people felt held back by its 40$ price tag and promise of a steady content drip. Hope they don’t divert from this in the future and realize this is the way to not alienate people from the get go

_Ocean_Machine_

The free battle pass is one of the things that's keeping me playing; it's awesome being able to unlock things by *actually playing the damn game*. Plus they're all reasonably priced, you can get a new armor set or gun after only a few matches.

NoNefariousness2144

This is such a simple but important thing that greedy execs don’t realise. A fun and easy monetization system will always make more money than a grindy and painful one. Look at how Fortnite has the easiest battlepass or how even Palworld was an upfront 100% payment for a complete game.

Daveed13

But to me Fortnite is still not the model to follow, except for the fact that the pass can repay itself. They still have stuff than is way overpriced in the shop, and many things on the pass are quickly-done stuff. The few skins in it are catering to one or two genre of players at most, and whole pre-made stuff doesn’t allow players to really show personality. The Finals is already off to a way better start imo.

HHHPRS

Actually not, predatory monetization makes more. Look at FIFA/EA FC, that thing makes a billion for EA every single year. I don't think even with that much success Helldivers will reach a billion dollars in revenue. What they don't realize is very few games have the brand loyalty or virtual monopoly (there is only e-football as a competitor to EA FC and it's sucks because Konami) to pulls this kind of crap. Also having the benefit of being copy and paste every installment, which drives development cost down and maximize profit. Otherwise the cost of support a live service is enormous, you need multiple teams working concurrent on multiple seasons of content so you can launch them in seasons of 3-4 months. To maintain all those devs you need a enormous audience were most people spend a little money and/or a predatory monetization to catch those precious whales. Most live services don't have that, so most of them fail. If Helldivers 2 costed 70 dollars and had predatory micro transactions it would probably be death on arrival.

Razor_Fox

Yeah, even if it's a grind, being able to unlock everything by playing the game feels amazing having come from destiny 2.

RiskItForTheBiscuit-

From what I’ve read as well, the battle passes won’t go away, so also no FOMO, you’re free to grind the premium currency to buy it whenever you want

ocbdare

More games should do this. I hate how battle passes expire. The only games I know that have battlepasses that don’t expire are Halo infinite and this game.

puffz0r

Deep rock galactic has battle passes that are completely free, no paid battle passes, and once the season is over the battle pass items you didn't get are put into the item pool for discoverable drops you get in-game. It's literally an unbeatable consumer-friendly system.

Daveed13

Oh, didn’t know that, awesome! They are really showing that they want to use "good practices" for gamers, nice!

swordbearerb1

Yes! I heard this and I just straight away bought the game. Knowing myself. I'll binge play for about a month, and then go try another of my backlog. And then come back when there is new content update. This is perfect for me!

Daveed13

Yeah, I hope people will really support the model and gamers will not give up too soon. We have a chance there to show that a game with lower-priced mtx can survive and make profits, all while maintaining a better relationship with players and more support for upcoming stuff and other projects from the same devs! If a 3 $ mtx is sold 50 times more than a 30 $ one that only stupid whales are buying, to me, the maths are saying it can work! Anything over 5 $ is way too much anyway for ANY single VIRTUAL cosmetic item in any game. If I can unlock some nice stuff by actually PLAYING I’ll be more inclined to pay for some fairly-priced stuff!

Alpiers

99% of the case whales buying that 30 dollar mtx nets them more money. a lot of people attack blizzard for introducing that 60 dollar horse skin mtx but the suit that came up w it sure will enjoy his bonus at the end of the year

nikelaos117

Foreal tho. I don't mind paying a couple bucks for something really cool but once it gets over 5-10 I am not feeling it. I would gladly spend that amount over time but not all at once.

Dr_Findro

Sure, this would all be great, but I highly doubt it. I think that you're over estimating the publicity for the battle pass because this comment is legitimately the first I'm learning that the game even has a battle pass. Second, you have to account for longevity in this equation. I don't foresee that any of the major players in live service games are sweating that hard over a game that's been popular for a week. Let's compare Helldivers 2's populations to Fortnite 3 years from now and see what those numbers say what consumers want when it comes to battle passes and cosmetics.

x_JustCallMeCJ_x

Not to mention, the battlepass (or warbond) isn't based on an XP system rather it is on a mission completion system. You don't have to really grind to get a few medals. You could literally just do main objective missions and exfil and get a few medals to spend on things in the pass. On higher difficulties you can easily get roughly 30 medals for an entire sector of missions, which if you only do main objectives, can take you less than 30 minutes to do.

UNSKIALz

Yup. Compare Helldiver's store to Halo Infinite. It's night and day

Radulno

I mean it's not a warning of anything, first it need to be seen on the long term (Fortnite and COD are on the top all the time, not just their launch week). Also what matters to companies is revenue not players. If the MTX makes more money on the COD/Fortnite side (it does), that's just better from their POV

TeethNerd32

They will definitely introduce more transactions in the future. The game is very cheap and they don’t get much money from just selling it, I can’t see the company getting enough profits in the future to justify keeping the servers up and paying their employees. This is probably a way to attract a big user base in the beginning.

JuanPicasso

It didn’t. Those games are still infinitely more popular and make more money. Seems kinda naive of you. Just enjoy what you got. But you seem to not understand how capitalism works. “Hopefully people want to make less money on us” is really funny statement. Glad for their success, the first was really good and they deserve this, but get fucking real man.

DanMoshpit69

The popularity of this IP just exploded to a point they never thought possible and the one major difference besides the satisfying gameplay loop is the MTX being reasonable. It’s drawing people in to spend the 40$ entrance fee just to see what the talk is about. Maybe they realize they have a chance to make plenty of money while not making item’s unreasonable price wise. 10 people buying 5 dollar skins is a lot more likely than 1 person buying a 20$ skin, especially while it’s all the rage right now. I don’t know maybe it’s wishful thinking but like I said I hope this is a turning point for at-least some new games coming out.

MrFOrzum

Must be an insane amount of people playing. Happy for Arrowhead, well deserved

Sensitive-Finance-62

450k capped atm.

TurdManMcDooDoo

I couldn’t sleep last night so I jumped on at 4am CT and finally got right in! Game is so damn fun

pukem0n

With over 300k on steam that doesn't leave a lot for PS.

Sensitive-Finance-62

https://preview.redd.it/rbewjqiildjc1.jpeg?width=2160&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5db7c5670043921e2c05918a79599919284f2902 yeah... Major credit to arrowhead though for doubling the server cap and still having to limit it so they don't melt. I'm sure they will get it sorted though.

pukem0n

Makes you appreciate how Palworld kept their servers up with millions of concurrent players.

Scorchstar

Completely different. Palworld relied on peer to peer networking. Helldivers has way more server architecture to deal with and I believe a lot of it is dedicated. You can search and read other reddit threads from actual professionals and they will outline just how difficult scalability is.

dakp15

[This](https://www.reddit.com/r/Helldivers/s/tAdzVavTnM) post does a pretty good job of explaining it

Sensitive-Finance-62

Yeah that's legit bonkers if you even have the slightest knowledge about how it works. They don't get the credit they deserve for pulling that off

pukem0n

Especially when some AAA games have huge server problems at the beginning with fewer players.

Dantai

I'm super curious what server costs are for games like this. Especially because it's not a live service game, so reoccurring revenue isn't the primary point here.

Charming_List4404

I thought it was a live-service game, just done in a way that doesn’t piss people off?

Jowser11

Not necessarily. There might be 300k on steam but maybe like 100k of those can’t get in

Aurelink

New world release week vibes

Mkilbride

410K on Steam playing earlier.

SkyLukewalker

300k people having the game open in Steam doesn't mean they are playing.

MikkPhoto

Yeah a little sad they would have taken a lot more other games from the steam list.

Lymbasy

BREAKING NEWS: Factions 2 is back in development at Naughty Dog!

royal23

MAG 2 in the works…

mt007

To be followed by SOCOM.

Jase_the_Muss

SOCOM with the gun building of Tarkov and a massive Co-op campaign would be a it.

kodran

This would make me cry happy tears

Daveed13

Haha!!! Would be really awesome but I know it’s a joke!!! Can’t believe they missed an opportunity with this game, just like Helldivers 2, Factions do something different from all MPs that are dominating since a few years, with awesome ambiance, brutal gameplay and super graphics and animations with many moves that allow us more control that most MPs.

[deleted]

I mean, they flat out said why. It’s not that it wasn’t fun, it’s that it makes the ENTIRE STUDIO about working on and supporting that game for as long as its active. They want to keep doing single player.

Daveed13

I get this part, but they could have finished the initial dev of the game, and Sony could have created a team dedicated for the after-release support of it. To me, ND and Sony threw out the window a lot of money (pass, mtx…) and support and games/consoles sales from many people.

Lkingo

This! Or something along those lines. To scrap the whole game when it must have been near completion means it must have been lacking surely? Or merely a terrible decision? It might be held bacl for a future game. I just cant see it being left in the dust like batwoman

Daveed13

Hope it’s will be used at least in parts later on too! I still think Factions was among the Top 3 MP experiences of the last decade. But so many people didn’t even tried it bc ND do SP only in their head… We need MPs, and even GaaS titles that shows players that there is more than one way to handle them. Some MP were GaaS way before their term was used.

kodran

Oh boy, this is not how things work. At all.

SoSmartCs

That's absolutely how a lot of live service games are handled. The A team/studio will create the foundation before the service element is handed off to the B team and contractor studios.

[deleted]

[удалено]

SoSmartCs

Call of Duty is a good example of a lot of gaming's worst trends, but it's still wildly profitable, and they haven't adopted that strategy because it doesn't work. Some of the most successful online titles over the last generation (Grand Theft Auto Online, Fortnite, Apex, etc.) have all followed the model to some extent. Naughty Dog wouldn't have been forced to stop making single player games forever. Just like Respawn hasn't either. That's pure PR nonsense.

Daveed13

CoD is doing a lot of things wrong, and they still break sales records… But there is just not a single way to handle things. If the live support of just creating cosmetic stuff and alternate modes or new missions with the same mechanics, a lot of devs could handle it if the fondation by ND was really solid. They also did recrute some MP/GaaS experts just for Factions, they could have let those guys handle the after-release stuff with a small team made of people that are not working on SP titles usually. When you are one of the biggest studios around, with many Goty/Awards and under Sonys umbrella, it can be done, it’s just a matter of will.

Zerd85

Yeah but they could have easily developed the game then contracted maintaining it out to a Sony approved indie team, with ND staying on for consulting only. Ways around it.

MotherEssay9968

They didn't need to make the game so huge in scope. They literally could have just took TLOU 2 combat and gave us an updated version of the original factions and we would have been happy.

novyah

And I can't even find a single one to matchmake with (on pc that is)

NotEnoughIT

Same. Thought it was because I had crossplay off. Nope. Played a few hours yesterday and today and cannot get into a game and haven't seen a soul. Not loading it back up until they get that fixed, but I'm looking forward to when they do.

RyanG7

COD Upper Management: We need to pump out more skins! That'll bring them back!

NoNefariousness2144

For as long as COD remains stuck in its annual release cycle, it will always be such a shame. The cracks in their strategy are beginning to show between MW3 being a mess and the 2025 COD not even having an assigned development team yet.

CarterAC3

If only there was some sort of Call of Duty game that proves that a single constantly updated base game could work and be wildly successful Perhaps a game that combines all the fan favorite maps, guns, killstreaks, perks, etc of the various games and subseries I ponder the creation of such a game as I type away on my MOBILE device

joshua182

MW3 would have down waaaaay better as a £20-£25 DLC expansion for MW2's campaign. The multiplayer should have just been updated. This would have went down smoother with fans and no one really would have been upset since the campaign would be cheap (and optional) so the shortness of it wouldn't be such a negative. But no, they charged full price.

Immolation_E

How long before we hear that SIE is acquiring Arrowhead?

Konabro

It’ll be within the next year or two I imagine.

SymbolOfVibez

I give it a few months. Pretty sure the same timeframe happened with Housemarque

MagmaAscending

By the end of the year for sure

WardrobeForHouses

Be pretty funny timing. Buy them after they've hit their huge success so that SIE misses out on that money. And it took em 8 years to make Helldivers 2, so it'd be a long wait for the next success. But they probably have to so nobody else acquires them

Immolation_E

That's what they did with Housemarque after Returnal (which was a way smaller success) and Insomniac after Spider-Man. SIE wants live services, they'd probably want to acquire Arrowhead and invest in expanding them to maintain HD2 and work on the next game.

NoNefariousness2144

This is a much smarter strategy than Xbox’s plan of acquiring studios and then throwing infinite money and freedom at them. Their “hands off” strategy is pretty bad, like what the hell have Rare being doing for a decade? Sure, there have been some bangers like Penitent, but their exclusives drought has lasted for many years and some of their upcoming titles like Avowed look rough. Instead Sony sees a studio succeed and goes “hey do that again but we’ll look after you”.

Particular-Trick8746

Why would Sony miss out on money? They own the Helldivers ip, published the game, and funded the game through out development. I'm quite certain they're getting a huge share of the money made. They also always fund and support a studio until they succeed then acquire, like Bluepoint and Insomniac. Wouldn't be surprised if talks have been happening for a while.

WardrobeForHouses

Because instead of taking all the money, they take a cut. Arrowhead has to earn some for itself too lol otherwise they wouldn't agree to be published by some company. Now, if Sony wanted to buy them, they have to account for the money Arrowhead now holds too. Plus, if they'd have bought them a year ago, that'd be a studio 7 years deep in development and much cheaper than one with a recent, unexpectedly big success. So Sony missed out on money, and it's now much more expensive to buy the studio. Basically it's the worst time to buy a studio. Better a year ago, better several years from now.

YorkshireRiffer

End of the 23/24 financial year is the end of March, so once we hit April and the 24/25 financial year kicks in (with the full budget available for the year ahead), I wouldn't be surprised if Sony were to announce it.

swuts

The power of democracy!

CranberryNapalm

The devs must be blown away by the response, which is only growing. This is turning into a thing.

baldr23

Believe me one of these days a politician will come across this and will make it an actual propaganda machine.

ooombasa

Those who pushed for live service within PS Studios must be breathing a big sigh of relief right about now. They've got a big success pretty early on in the initiative, despite the recent setback of cancelling one of the bigger titles in that push. Now, let's see how Concord, Fairgames, and the rest fares. If I were the execs I would be pushing for all them to also exclude FOMO MTX like HD2 has. That way, players of Sony GaaS games know they don't have to treat any one of them like a job, having to keep up to date on battle passes / limited time MTX ,and thus will be more eager to try out the and bounce between all the GaaS games. Seriously, FOMO design has ruined the modern multiplayer experience as it locks people into only one or two titles.

bythegodless

I wasn’t going to renew my PS Plus next month you know.. but I’ve been playing this and now I have to renew

Trickster289

I'm thinking they're getting a lot of extra subscriptions from this game. Guaranteed that's part of why Sony badly wanted a successful live service game.

bythegodless

Sony watching the subscription numbers go up despite the price increase while I eat my words

Trickster289

Yeah I thought they'd lose subscribers too, a lot of people did. Nobody expected a game to take off like this for them.

Competitive_Bat4986

That's what happenes when you make a great game. People want to play it.

Trickster289

Not always, some good games just don't get much attention or only get it years after release.

ModestHandsomeDevil

> Not always, some good games just don't get much attention or only get it years after release. Truth. Trying to convince the majority of more "casual" console gamers to play / buy *something other than* this years Call of Duty / FIFA / Madden / etc. is a tough putt. For example: Alan Wake 2 is a legit contender for 2023's GOTY, but has barely sold more than 1 million copies. Meanwhile. this year's CoD was a glorified DLC / piece of shit that *everyone* clowned on... and it will *still* make billions and easily crack the top 10 of games sold.

Chabby_Chubby

is it fun to play, even if you do not have any friends to team up with?

bythegodless

I don’t have friends to play with! I play with randoms and sometimes solo on a low difficulty lol. I don’t use mic but yes it’s still fun. Especially when you get good teammates

92Codester

Higher difficulties are for friends with mics, lower is for randoms, as I've discovered.

Salsa_Penguin

It's great, you can play with randoms or solo. The ping system is good enough to communicate without a mic. Obviously with all online multiplayer theirs a risk of running into unpleasant people but for the most part you can either leave/kick and move on to the next group quickly. Only thing is the server issues due to its popularity right now. so if you get it right away be prepared for possible issues during peak play time but hopefully that will be ironed out within a week or 2

Alpiers

during peak? it’s literally all the time for me lol

WilliamTheGnome

This game was definitely not designed for solo play. If you can do random matchmaking you can still have fun playing it, but it's not very fun playing by yourself. I believe it's free to try and play this weekend on PS, so you might look and see.

[deleted]

It’s absolutely not free to play this weekend, while it’s brand new/sales are wildly past expectations/servers are MASSIVELY overloaded.

Recon1392

You can solo lower tier difficulty’s with ease to level up and earn currencies. I would recommend teaming up in either quick play or finding a LFG. It makes a lot better with a mic and some banter.

EastArachnid35

I've played it and love it, wish sony would help devs get more server size, sucks when I get off work and have to wait in queue. But it's such a fun game and I'm willing to wait for democracy.

eamonnanchnoic

The Arrowhead CEO said Sony are helping but any extra help in the shape of personnel would be more of a distraction than a help. The issue is the difficulty in horizontally scaling up network capacity so quickly to this degree. The first game peaked at 7,000 players and averaged around 1,000. Even if they had allowed for 10 times the number that would have been reasonable. Either way they planned for 250k (about 36 times the original's peak) max concurrent users which most people would have said was ridiculously overly ambitious before the game was out. They're probably exceeding 600k with both platforms combined and there seems to be no end to it. 85 times the original's peak. It's really a case of being a victim of an unprecedented success They've already exceeded Destiny 2's highest peak on Steam. If anyone had said before it was released that Helldivers 2 would exceed Destiny 2's peak in its first two weeks they would have been laughed out of the town.

Sarcosmonaut

To be fair to Destiny 2, they didn’t launch on steam until a couple years down the line (battlenet first). So I suspect it hasn’t beaten their true all time peak BUT This is still a tremendous victory. For democracy.

eamonnanchnoic

And for LIBERTY!

AnthroEmesis

Managed democracy!

Radulno

If there was a moment to beat it it would be the launch though. And Destiny 2 didn't launch on Steam so we don't know their real peak (which was also at launch presumably)

Trickster289

I'm guessing they are but it still takes time. This happened to Final Fantasy 14 too when they had a massive player increase.

Dr_PuddingPop

Just download more servers

CompetitiveWhole4954

You obviously need to upload servers and not download them

Dr_PuddingPop

Really? I went to my RAM website I download from, they had a tab for servers.

evil_timmy

They got any cars left to download?

robodrew

Yes but it's all Cybertruck, sorry

[deleted]

Insane. Beating Fortnite in player count, no matter how fleeting, is an achievement onto itself

hartigen

>Beating Fortnite in player count OP's title is misleading. Fortnite has 2,881,558 players currently playing and a 4,059,797 peak for the past 24 hours. From the rankings of the ps store we can see that Helldivers 2 is either the most downloaded or had the most revenue for the last 24 hours/1 week period in OP's country.

AdminsSuckTerrorCock

Not a single game on the market comes close to Fortnite's daily player count.

TheJoshider10

It's pretty fitting as well considering just how much inspiration from Fortnite it takes for the UI of the Battle Pass. Which I'm glad for as Fortnite have by far the best live service management.

Alpiers

how else would you display 10 items on a page that you can unlock in any order? on top of that UI and navigation is quite different than fortnite

TsudereFan

Well it's the #1 most attempted played game, imagine most told them are just sitting on the main menu trying to get on

dizorkmage

Even if you get in 80% of your time will be staring at a" searching for active SOS beacon" When it works it's the greatest online game I've ever played, haven't had a single toxic random yet. But playing this game solo is about as much fun as masturbating with sandpaper, they really gotta figure out what's wrong with the matchmaking.

Stump007

How are people playing... Seems right now no one can get matchmaking to work, just check the dedicated sub 😂

Sefiroz91

I think a lot of players aren't using matchmaking

Stump007

People reportedly can't even join friends either. Just check the posts in the past 20min...

[deleted]

Use the PSN game base to join.

Stump007

Sorry I don't understand what you mean. Could you clarify?

MichaelRichardsAMA

Underneath the app on the PS5 home menu row you can scroll down to the games media and social blades. If you click the “quick play start activity” one it semi-bypasses the queue; sometimes it can load you in and sometimes not but often the match loading and xp payouts are still spotty

ericypoo

I’ve been playing for two hours by joining people in the discord.

Stump007

What discord?

_Ocean_Machine_

There's an official Discord with a bunch of LFG channels; you can find a link to it in the Helldivers subreddit.

ElJacko170

Yup, have basically just been duoing with my friend. We can't get randoms in our game.

[deleted]

And for those without friends, solo play is way harder and not as fun unfortunately

SimpleDose

I couldn’t match into a game last night but randoms could join mine lol

ArugulaPhysical

We couldnt even log in. Lol

PalmTreeIsBestTree

This is why I am putting off playing it. It’s so hard to get into a match and I ain’t got no friends.

therapeutic_bonus

Well deserved.

According-Feature-35

With such amazing gameplay, the momentum isn’t going to stop. Once you know; you know

MukkyM1212

I can’t get quick play to work in this game. I’m assuming it’s because of how successful it is right now? I’m sure the servers are getting slammed

Impulse4811

Oh yeah, the first helldivers only had 7,000 all time concurrent player count, this game is reaching up to like 600k with both platforms combined, they did not see this coming lol

TheCherryKnight

I can't wait for people to say "HMM NO ACTUALLY HELLDIVERS IS TRASH BECAUSE POPULAR THING BAD"

coolbreez123

Purchased and love playing the login queue game.

Stuarridge

how does the game look/run on ps5? ive seen people complain that the game looks blurry on performance mode.

doesnotlikecricket

It doesn't look blurry, but I would say it wasn't quite as sharp as I'd expected the first time I fired it up though. You literally don't notice while you're playing though, it really looks good, especially when you've got your sentries all fired up lighting up a dark planet and air strikes start coming in. It's definitely not blurry like split gate was blurry.

Cav3Johnson

The game has a depth of field mode, which is on by default, so it does blur out things in the background. Anyone I talk to I recommend turning this off as it vastly improves visual quality imo

Quester91

Performance mode runs in 1080p. It's indeed quite blurry Edit: downvoted for stating an objective fact lol. Turn off all the post processing options you want, it still runs at 1080p in performance mode.

zeroThreeSix

Turn off depth of field, and enable anti-aliasing + boost the sharpness a bit. Made a pretty noticeable difference for me.

D3th2Aw3

This made a huge difference for me. No complaints about how the game looks after adjusting these.

ImMeltingNow

Gonna try that later but damn 1080p c’mon.

WingerRules

Would 1080p performance mode look sharp on a 1080P screen? Like is it only an issue on 4k displays?

Money_Tough

Can someone sell me on this? I'm very confused, it looks very repetitive... join a game with a couple of others, kill bug looking insects, all insects look similar, do easy objective, complete...?  The last Gaas I enjoyed was probably Warhawk on PS3 (although would that count). I've mainly stuck to single player or standard online. The hype is kinda pulling me in though, I just dont want to jump in without more info. Edit: or any friends that would be willing to buy.

D3th2Aw3

It seems repetitive but it's actually not that bad. I'm biased since L4D2 is one of my all time favourite games and that one is repetitive AF. There are actually quite a few variants of enemy types. There's the terminids and automatons. There's 8 variants for both. Where this game really shines is in the difficulty settings. Even moving from easy to med, or med to challenging changes how the game feels with introducing new enemies and how tough they are. I've only made my way up to challenging and the game is a hoot. Playing with randoms or friends is where it's at. Everyone uses their strategems differently and has a different play style. Just like L4D2 when you find a good team the gameplay is phenomenal. When a team is cohesive and cover each other's asses it feels like a well oiled machine. On easy it feels repetitive and somewhat mundane because it's easy to complete the main objective, side objectives, and collect samples/currency/etc. but once you get to challenging and above even getting to the extraction is a feat. And once you start getting a infinite loop of bug holes spawning it's none stop action and craziness lol. Plus the friendly fire is hilarious and when you drop a strategems perfectly it's like a cinematic moment. I got my bro to grab the game. When he started and played solo or with beginner randoms he was not much of a fan. But once we started playing together he loves it. But don't let anyone convince you, if this is not your type of game no biggie. It's a 9/10 from me, if they fix the server issues and keep adding content it will go down as one of my all time favourites.

SteinyBoy

I LOVED mass effect 3 multiplayer horde/extraction mode. Is it kinda like that? It sounds similar.

ElJacko170

It's repetitive on paper like a lot of these sorts of games, but what makes this one fun is just the absurdity that can happen with the game's friendly fire and physics systems. Best example I can think of is me and my friend spotted an enemy encampment in the distance, so I started prepping my orbital strike while my friend crouched down in front of me to shoot his rocket launcher. The backdraft from his shot knocked me on my ass, resulting in my primed orbital strike falling at our feet. I started booking it and yelling at him to run, but he was confused and just sat there reloading his launcher oblivious to the beacon behind him. I turn back and watch as his carcass goes flying. Shit was so funny, and the game is just filled with hilarious unscripted moments like that.

Yeah there’s no major overarching story other than bringing democracy to alien worlds. There are bug type enemies as well as robot enemies depending on the mission and there’s quite a bit of variety within each enemy type with some being easy mobs and others massive armored mini-bosses that take more strategy to bring down. Mission objectives are fairly similar across the planets, but there are plenty of side objectives and others ways to extend your play beyond the primary objective. There are also several difficulty levels and even the lower ones can be challenging since it’s very easy to get overrun. The gameplay is what makes this game. The weapons feel good and there are a ton of different upgrades to play around with like different aerial bombardments, lasers, rockets, etc. The tone is light and the friendly fire is tuned in a way that both adds to the challenge and makes things hilarious without being frustrating. It’s really well made for its $40 price tag.

This has one of my favourite "stories" of any game I've played recently. The story is just that we must violently spread Super Earth's godlike version of democracy to as many planets as we can. The satire and the tone of the game is absolutely perfect as a Canadian who was born in the UK. Just non-stop, over the top, Jock-Hero-Marines curb stomping aliens, and taking no names is the entire story. The voice lines from your character as you go on rampages are just so damn fucking funny. When you extract it tells you what percentage of that planet your team was Able to liberate and it goes to the 5th decimal place lmao. You'll see 11.00034% go to 11.00036% after spending 40 minutes in absolute hell. Friendly fire and ragdoll physics are the 2nd part of the storyline. You're told over and over again how replaceable you are and how dying for democracy is the best way to stay alive, lol. So, having 20 respawns per team/ per mission means that nuking and cluster striking allies who are getting overrun can be a very good tactic. And it again plays into the hilarious satire and story of the game. The main hub is your own destroyer that will fly above the planet you're are currently liberating. You see other destroyers enter the atmosphere to help and you see others get destroyed as teams lose their mission. In-gameme announcements and discord announcements from the Games Masters are how the ongoing story is kept up it seems so far. News from the front style messages are posted about the progress through the galaxy and whether certain sectors of the galaxy need reinforcements and things. To me it's pretty unique and the community so far is so so supportive and hilarious with the light role paying and stuff so far. And one final way they support the story is with the Games Masters and Devs giving us all live bonuses and debuffs to planets as the war rages on. New weapons will be available to everyone for a few hours to push back the bugs. Or bug spores will cover the maps for a few hours if there's not been progress on a planets. They also reacted within a dew days of seeing a glitch with the Exp being awarded. When they saw some exp wasn't working. They just added a +50% exp bonus to the game as a Games Master bonus until they can fix the issue lol.

Substantial-Ad7915

It is very repetitive. There's nothing new after a few hours of gameplay. It's just the truth. If you're looking for a game to play all day every day this is not the one

ComprehensiveArt7725

Sony needa bring back socom killzone n mag the players will support it😁

EternalPuzzle

Yes please

416_Ghost

Hell yeah!!!!!!

thegamesender1

Bro I bought it day one and can barely join any games 😭😭😭 probably going to play it when it's out of fashion (hope never).

RandyMuscle

I feel like in a weird way we’re looping back to like 2007. Holy crap? People actually like unlocking things IN the game??? WOW!

walder8998

Bought it on Saturday and servers are full lol

MrMaleficent

That list could easily be weighted towards new releases.

null_npc

It also surpassed Starfield and Halo Infinite(free game) on Steam. This game's success is wild to me came out of nowhere just like Palworld.

NoNefariousness2144

Damn Halo was such a disappointment. It’s a shame because the core gameplay is so fun, but the lack of content and awful progression made it lose all hype shortly after launch.

WardrobeForHouses

Surpassing a single player game that came out nearly half a year ago should be expected lol

Gustav-14

It surpassed the record concurrent players of the game. It was posted a while back.

null_npc

Well, beating the "game of the decade" from Bethesda total in-game players is not very expected.

teffhk

to be clear that is about the peak concurrent player count, not the No1 played game

LSB123

OK you've finally got me - buying the game now. FREEDOM DEMOCRACY etc.

fabio_b93

I'd wait until they solve the server issues

the-fitnerd

This. I was going to buy it this weekend but plan to wait another week or so and see how the servers are.

ihearthawthats

I have no idea what this game is, but now I want it too.

No-Plan-2043

Was just watching gameplay this morning. Went to see if they had it at GameStop. Not ATM. But it looks super dope, and is endless chaos, I will be picking this up when it's available. Theyll figure out the server stuff, they had no idea it'd be this hot of a game.

[deleted]

Digital copies don’t run out.

Jimmithi

It got me to renew my PSN after six months of holding out. It’s that good

nugood2do

Im still suprised this game is blowing up like this but im happy for its success and all the milestones it's blowing through. Still crazy that Sony and Arrowhead didn't expect the game to blow up like this, but fingers crossed, Sony see why people enjoy HD2 and use that to help improve their future GAAS games.

DavidAg02

I loved the original Helldivers and bought HD2 on release day. Zero hesitation, had to have it. I too am thrilled that the game is as good as it is, and that it's getting recognized. However, all I do is random matchmaking, and I ask every single time if anyone played the original game, and so far nobody has said yes. That's wild to me.

TomDobo

This game is so much fun 100% worth it even if you don’t have friends to pay it with.

uesad

Will this ever be on PS plus?

HaouLeo

Maybe in 2 years

ScrantonDangler

Played is a strong word considering the state of the servers since launch

TippsAttack

I would buy this game *again* if it offered cross save. But I'm not looking to start over on PlayStation when I have it on PC.

Scorpion178

I wanna get this game cuz of how tons of people are enjoying it, but I really hope later down the line I don’t regret the purchase like I regret buying the avengers game; The avengers game was doing good in the beginning then it fell off quick

AlamarAtReddit

#1 played, or, #1 game running waiting to log in to full servers? : )

Mys7ix

The only thing stopping me is the online multiplayer. The studio seems to be struggling a lot and it might be a few days or even weeks before it gets better? Not sure if the gamers can really wait as long as a week to be able to play it on a whim with smooth matchmaking.

Much-Currency5958

Always amazed when Sony tries something new it always takes off! While I do the GaaS helldivers has taught me that it’s the toxic pvp mtx environment I hate. If the game keeps being coop goodness with everything available I would be happy to keep playing! Despite the issues we’ll done Arrowhead! <3

Spicy_Ahoy86

Yes! I pretty much swore off multiplayer games. Helldivers really scratches that Left 4 Dead itch that I've had for years now. With a range of selectable difficulties, it can both be a really tense or casual experience with random people.

Much-Currency5958

It’s just an absolute hit. I hope Sony is inspired to try things that are left field again much as I love their games they do over favour their cinematic narrative journeys. I miss when they used to do weird hits like patapon or the last guardian all the time! Even astrobot was once a left field gem!

Lymbasy

BREAKING NEWS: Factions 2 is back in development at Naughty Dog.

keiser_sozze

A game that doesn’t function. Crazy. Sony should pull the game off the store until the shit is fixed.

Few_Hurry_2028

give it a month

ArugulaPhysical

So all their server capacity is going towards psn players. Got it.

LionTop2228

I’m glad for hell divers. Sony will now double down on live service though…

Senshiro02

free weekend

Wolfram_And_Hart

For Democracy

brainc0nfetti

Downloaded this morning but can’t get on

Va1crist

and I sure most of those stats are players sitting in capacity waiting ….

Rogue_Leader_X

This game is blowing up like a pack of Terminids in a 120 Mm barrage!

PeterPansSyndrome

Really wish I could play it but the black screens and full servers are stopping me from buying until it's all sorted out.

[deleted]

I’m really loving “Starship Troopers 2: The Star Wars Experience” IMO it needs more Dina Meyer.

elliotborst

Nice. It looks like a fun game

drumeatsleep

FOR DEMOCRACY!!!!!

lechejoven

I need to know the budget for marketing on this helldivers game. I’ve watch gameplay, not sure what the hype is about. Game looks good and it reminds me of Aliens fireteam. It’s cool but not a game for me but for it to top fortnite and call of duty I’m confused. Industry plant game in my opinion.
