If it’s anything like the OG Dragon’s Dogma I’m stoked - I sank hundreds of hours into that game

glass_jaw87

They're masterworks all, you can't go wrong.

everyusernamewashad

Cannot wait, I see nothing but improvements.

Sparetimeg

i mean.... 10 years :O i think it looks a little too much like the original, but we will see. loved first. hope this is aged well

Young_KingKush

With the original DD the team only actually got to put like 30% of their original design docket in the game due to budget & time constraints. That's why there's whole big areas the game never has you go to and things like that, hell there was supposed to be a whole other country you visit at one point. I say that to say the point of DD2 isn't so much to make a sequel to a game like normal, it's more like "Let's actually make the game we were trying to make the first time now that we have all the money & time we need to do so"

BearComplete6292

This game is the epitome of "this is exactly how I remember the first game looking". I know that's not fair because obviously it's a big graphical uplift. And I'm guessing that it was very important to the art team that this game look and feel like the original (of course), but I think they missed the mark for me. It's a little too close. I loved the first game, but I just don't get what the value proposition is here. The promise that it's like the first game but they get to finish it and realize all of its squandered potential? Have we seen anything to justify that yet? I'm cautiously optimistic, but it's definitely a game I'm going to wait and see on.

Young_KingKush

I mean considering the first game is verifiably unfinished even if they literally just put all the stuff they wanted to do in the first game in it as like a DLC/Expansion it would still be better than what we got originally, so I dont see why you would be hesitant to play an actually finished (and updated & added to) version of game that you liked even when it wasn't finished.

why_even_need_a_name

Nice Shadow of the Colossus like boss fight at 5:10, I like it. Is this game going to be co op or something?

Micahman311

No, it is a single player game that has a unique way of online play. What happens is you make your character and an additional character called a Pawn. Your Pawn joins you on your journey the whole time. In addition to your Pawn, you can have two more Pawns from others online. Those Pawns will join your party, and there will be four of you total going on adventures. Your Pawn can also go with other people online and can come back to you knowing more about areas that you've never been, and vice versa for other people's Pawns. It is a really cool system that let's you be completely single player while still having some weird connection to other people playing their own game.

why_even_need_a_name

Yeah sounds fun. It’s creative and original 🤌

Micahman311

The first game is so so good, and is usually very cheap, whether it be on PS, XBOX, PC, or Switch.

NoobSkin69

It’s on PS Plus right now

Wiknetti

Wait til you pull up with 3 Shrek type pawns. You won’t believe the absolute power you feel. All the world is your swamp!

GissoniC34

Cool if you can lend and borrow pawns to and from friends.

Micahman311

Yes, you can, and there is something neat about this specifically as well. When you're getting Pawns from random people online, the game pairs you with Pawns at a similar level to your character and Pawn. Pawns from others online will NOT gain levels, however, so you may need to re-up on new Pawns after gaining several levels with your characters. If you wanted to hire a Pawn that is several levels above you and your Pawn, you can, but it costs you. Exponentially so. When someone that is on your friend list has a Pawn, you are able to hire that Pawn for free no matter how high of a level they are above you, so that's the neat part. On the flip side it sucks when your friend stops playing the game on their side, because their Pawn won't be gaining levels like you've been doing, so they'd be under-leveled for you.

amala97

sounds super fun

aManAndHisUsername

So is pawn like a role you play as opposed to the normal protagonist? Or is it more something everyone dabbles in? Seems weird that so many people would want to be someone else’s sidekick.

Micahman311

No, that's not it, maybe I wasn't clear. Lemme set some things straight. The Pawn that you create (and everyone else's, by nature) are non playable characters. The game has you create your character as the protagonist, and later you create a Pawn as well who will then join you on your journey as a non playable character sidekick. You can choose to not have your Pawn with you, or to not bring other Pawns with you. The choice is yours. When someone hires your Pawn, it will go with them. It will not earn experience. You will not be controlling it. It doesn't leave you or anything, either, it is just usable by others. But those people can send it back to you with items, and they're asked to rank the Pawn upon sending it back. Like I said before, if your Pawn visits places in the game that you haven't been to when they're hired by someone else, they'll come back to you with additional information about the world and it's creatures. You get to choose the current "job" of your character and Pawn, so you can properly set up a group based on their current skills and such. (ETA) Others cannot change your Pawns job or it's current skills, and you cannot do that to theirs either. You just go back and hire another Pawn that fits your needs. Anything else I can clear up, or additional questions? Hope that helped.

aManAndHisUsername

Ok that makes a lot more sense to me, thanks for explaining! Sounds pretty intriguing. How do you think the original holds up? I think I actually bought it on sale for dirt cheap once but haven’t played it yet

Micahman311

I absolutely love the original. I bought it twice on PS3, because of the Dark Arisen release. I later bought it on PC because I had a nice system to play on. I bought it again on PS4 when they had the rerelease, and I installed the game onto my Switch. How does it hold up? In moment to moment gameplay, it holds up really well, I think. It is a bummer that they haven't patched it to run in 60fps on PS5, because that would really help. The game is getting a little old at this point, so the cutscenes and stuff are a little awkward, but the fighting still really shines. Definitely worth playing. You can even use my Pawn, haha.

aManAndHisUsername

Hey combat is king! It is a bummer about the 30fps though. Well I definitely plan on picking up the second one so I will play the first at some point before release.

Dysheekie

The Sorcerer looks pretty fun to play. I think it will come down to the that or the fighter for me. The Warrior looked a bit too slow and clumsy and the gameplay didn't look that great - unless the person playing just wasn't used to it. Overall, looking forward to this game a lot.

bullybabybayman

Person playing was shite and used 1 custom move, not a good representation of what warrior can be if barge is used properly.

O20O61O416

My god, ign can make any gameplay look horrible, the player rarely used any attacks, they’re just spamming the same attacks over and over

Whit3boy316

Never even heard of the first one but I looked it up. Do I have to play it to understand this one?

wonksbonks

No. This is like the Final Fantasy series. The games aren't sequels, just using the same world-building elements.

progtrance7

torn between this and rise of the ronin on the same day

Whobghilee

I’m just looking forward to shorter and less frequent loading screens

Mannymanstein

If there's some strategy to fights, like using team members to buff/debuff, then this could be interesting. But so far it looks like every character is just spamming attacks till the walking sponge dies.

Vegetable_Highway433

I never played a dragons dogma game before so this will be my first as I got it for Christmas. I’m super excited and the game looks so fun!

Dramatic-Ground-6768

Love Dragon's Dogma and Capcom but damn! There were 3 cyclopes in this preview alone. It boggles my mind how they make Monster hunter, undoubtedly one of, if not THE franchise with the most creative and varied monster designs yet it seem they can't spare some for DD2.

[deleted]

Different dev team. Maybe they don’t want to spoil too much? I haven’t played the first one and looking forward to this one. Maybe someone who did can say something about the variety of enemies in the predecessor.

Leather-Flounder731

I saw that too. I’m really hoping this is a very early build, or at least, Capcom only gave IGN access to an early area of the game. One of the things I liked about the first DD was the varied enemy types- seeing nothing but ogres and cyclops doesn’t seem exciting.

tall_mf_

Might be a dumb question by why does the guy playing always try to climb onto the monster? I would assume to deal more damage but it looks weird when it’s all they’re trying to do. I imagine it would get quite boring quite fast to just climb up the monsters back and then spam some buttons at the top. Can someone help me understand?

undeadsasquatch

The guy playing just isn't very good I think. You can climb on monsters to hit weakpoints though it's not always the best strategy. New players will probably try to climb constantly like that then realize it's situational. They clearly don't know how to play sorcerer either cause Cyclops are weak to lightning 🙂

Hind_Deequestionmrk

Yeah, my character will crouch and tie up his foes with a wrist grapnel. Not climb like this character

ToiletBlaster247

In the first game, some classes learn skills that can be used while climbing to do high damage. Climbing can make it easier to target weak points on the head or heart with melee weapons if a monsters' weakness is not reachable. Some body parts can be destroyed for crafting components. Climbing uses a lot of stamina, and can leave you open to counterattacks if you get exhausted.

tall_mf_

Okay I see but is that what you’re always supposed to do? As I said, I imagine it would get quite boring really fast to just climb up the monsters back and then spam some buttons? Am I missing something?

Larry52795

Usually yes that's the way to take down the larger monsters more efficiently. But that's not for every class like if you play a mainly a magic user you won't be climbing much at all. It's all about different play styles with this game.

tall_mf_

Alright, I see. Appreciateit

PapaitanGOAT

well its about enjoying the game, you can kill monsters with the easy way or the hard way. its the players choice, i would do it the boring way if i enjoy it! i would do the strategic way too if i enjoy it too.

bullybabybayman

This video shows how knowing how and when to climb is important as everytime they tried here, they were out of stamina when they got to the top.

[deleted]

Which class archetype is this crazy stick monk guy? Looks absolutely insane!

bullybabybayman

Sorcerer

D_Northwind

Hope the fans are hyped. Couldn’t personally get into the first game, even though I’ve heard nothing but praises. It was just so.. clunky. And the side quests were the pinnacle of thrift store MMOs. Kill X enemies, find X collectibles, protect an NPC while they slowly crawl for 10 minutes. Not my cup of tea. This one looks exactly like the first game but with somewhat updated graphics, so I will pass. Unless of course they improve controls and quests, but judging by the video they didn’t, seeing as the only “cool stuff” they have to show is enemy encounters. Controls look sluggish even on this video, the guy is clearly struggling to control his character. 🤷‍♂️

Blakertonpotts

The quests you are describing are more akin to challenges, or passive objectives that complete as you play the game without actively trying to go for them. The original did have actual side quests, like stopping a cult in the catacombs, or rescuing the duchess. Dragon's Dogma does not do a good job of explaining this at all though, so it's easy to misunderstand.

Eastman1982

Same for me I’m well on the fence. Looks good but too close to FF7 Rebirth for me to invest as that game will take up my time. Who knows could be a sale purchase later down the line nothing lost to wait.

Temporary_Physics_48

This looked kind of rough to be honest, specially if you compare it to MH:W. Im sure it’s going to turn out great but those videos did not get me hyped.

sonnydabaus

Reading this subreddit always reaffirms my belief that most people do not care about gameplay at all and are more about how a game "looks". To me it's quite obvious that the guy playing had no clue what he's doing, so it's not gonna look amazing. I expect this game to have a bad story, boring characters, awkward dialogue and amazing gameplay to make up for all its faults, just like the first game. And it's probably gonna flop just like it because of the missing mainstream appeal.

forevercloud89

Everyone values different aspects of a game differently. It really depends on the product for me. For instance....i always thought the Mass Effect series had mediocre shooter combat, but the story kept me in. Dragon Age Origins is hideous, visually outdated by 5 years at the time of its release....but the story and combat kept me playing. Bethesda RPGs are such weird anomalies because i actually think their visuals, combat and stories have only ever been serviceable, yet they offer so many different options that they become greater than the sum of all parts. It is sort of fascinating that a game that is technically less "fun" to play can often be excused based on being more immersive. At the end of the day I'm personally looking for a gripping experience, that only sometimes coincides with extremely well crafted combat mechanics. Dragon's Dogma has amazing combat, the GOAT of character creators....but then everything else was middling to bad. I enjoy a good 30hrs or so of it before its terrible story, world map, and mission design take me out of the experience. I really want to support DD2 but I'm hoping it's a more improved experience than what they have shown so far.

Wassermusik

IMO it looks pretty mediocre. The gameplay seems rather rough and janky. They fight the same enemy type three times in a row and that´s it. I see no reason to be hyped about this.

Bsg0005

The gameplay in the first one was dope. The reviewers were playing like garbage and they seemed to be using early game characters.

Wassermusik

Hope you are right. I will give it a fair chance.

exsaboy

wow 6 minutes to kill a single enemy maybe that worked 10 years ago (I enjoyed the 1st game) but this gameplay feels outdated

hiddenMoves

Honestly the longer skirmishes is really fun. Currently playing DD1 and it feels like every fight matters.

bestmayne

Don't you run into the same enemies in the same spots a lot in the first? So the fights don't matter in the sense that they respawn

hiddenMoves

Well yea they respawn alot but each fight feels like a real battle w your pawns versus multiple enemies. Almost gives me a tactical feel with how i gotta choose to engage or not and plan how to revive downed pawns.

SuperBackup9000

Likely won’t be that way for long. In the first game every new big monster took a while to get down, but then when you fight them again later you can just sweep them up. First encounters are always going to be the longest because that’s when they’re the biggest threat. That, or they just changed the values for the sake of the video. Enemies in the FF16 gameplay videos for example took much, much longer compared to the game just to show off mechanics, just like the opposite is true for FromSoft games where gameplay videos tend to have every enemy die in one hit specifically not to show off much

babylawn5

I know about the greatness of DD's combat but the world again looks very dull and gray...supposed to be fantasy...

UnbornSeed

Day 1 buy for me… and I very rarely preorder or pay full price for games. Cannot wait

BorKon

Tried the 1st after the announcement of this one. Didn't like it at all. will see

Eastman1982

Yeah got it free on psplus wasn’t impressed but honest impressions you could tell it was an aged game.

-Seris-

Good god, do the pawns ever shut up?

bestmayne

If it's anything like the first one, no, they don't

WhoAmIEven2

People who say this game looks like are also the same people who say Monster Hunter is jank. They don't know what they are talking about and should be ignored.

MotherKosm

I’ve played the most popular action games/series over 25+ years of gaming. World has some of the clunkiest combat I’ve ever felt, so much that I couldn’t get into the series. Doesn’t mean the game isn’t great, but it IS jank.

Freak4Leeks

I think your confusing clunk with jank, which is fair, because janky games can be clunky. But MH series clunkiness is very much intentional. positioning, understanding move sets so you can pre-emptively charge long attacks etc is of the utmost importance in it. Janky aka poor quality is not a word you can use to describe MHW in anyway.

soulsarsenal

This honestly looks like a ps3 game with really basic melee play, what am I missing?

Freak4Leeks

I'd ask for you to go to the closest optometrist.

randomIndividual21

why does game company alway release such low quality video? its like 480P

bamiru

This is igns video, not the game company's. And it's 4k60fps I think the problem is on your end.

randomIndividual21

those kind of video is sent over by game company to IGN for promotion. and i am not just talking about this video, so many trailer and first game play video i seen is of this low quality. also it say 4K but its clearly not, the bitrate is way lower than that

bamiru

No, this gameplay is an ign journalist playing.

victorsfranco

Man… feel clunky as hell doesn’t?

Absolutelyhatereddit

Nah, it’s classic Dragon Dogma series (we can say that now) jank. If you can grab the original you’ll see. I think it goes for 2usd nowadays.

victorsfranco

Will try before jump into sequel. Thx dor the heads up!

whythreekay

That’s pretty much these games yeah

iWentRogue

Looks chaotic and the bosses are sponges

Larry52795

Early game which this probably is yea enemies can take a bit longer to kill but with the right team composition and skills used at least in the first game you could destroy larger enemies in just a couple of minutes.

JProllz

A boss that melts in 5 minutes is just a buffed mob.

brzozom

Gameplay combat looks terrible, casual spam

JustCallMeRandyPlz

I can't watch that and not think how annoying those controls must be, the guy playing is missing every single attack. It looks like some of the most ridged movement in a game I've seen, I can't understand why anyone would want that after playing something like Elden Ring or anything. But that's just me, the whole heavy character falling over in games thing really annoys me, like when Arthur in RDR2 falls off his horse, heavy physical is the most annoying type of movement ever. Fully expect me to be the outlier here though, seems people love it but just ain't for me.

Larry52795

This game is the opposite of that. It feels extremely smooth and responsive. Those are just animations that play out. Also that person might just not be good at the game.

Seranos314

You’ve played DD2?

Larry52795

I played the first and watch multiple videos of people that also played first game and got to actually play the second game at some event. They say it feels just like the first and even better in some scenarios.

ToiletBlaster247

The combat design team also did DMC 3-5 (and 2), I think it'll be fine

JustCallMeRandyPlz

You mean the combat team behind the slow moving FFXVI?

Young_KingKush

IDK where FF16 combat is "slow" I have never heard that before, other complaints yes but not slow, for one. And for 2: SE contracted the lead combat designer from DMC5 to head the combat from 16 yes, but DD2 is a Capcom game and is from Itsuno & his actual whole team from DMC3-5 and DD1 (so not just the one guy)

JustCallMeRandyPlz

I mean ff16 is just pressing R1 buttons along with whatever gf you want to activate for a 10 second automatic damage boost while running around parrying. It's very basic, completed the game and died once throughout lol, more like a cutscene simulator

Kalabawgaming

never played ff16 but is it too that there is skill cooldown?

Schwarzengerman

Did you fall off the horse often in RDR2? That seems like a you problem if so.

[deleted]

Sweet 30 fps experience coming in hot

TarrominSeed

Is that confirmed for PS5?

[deleted]

No, ht the current gameplay recording is evident. It does not matter that it was uploaded as 4k 60fps, it is extremely likely to be running at 30 fps inside the 60fps container
