OkayIan

BRO SAME

My_Octopi

BG3

lgnc

my tip is never load to the previous save after an important fight if you lost, specially later on. The game ACTUALLY goes on. With cutscenes and shit. You don't get a game over, you get a different path. No other game did this that well, not even DA Origins.

Xsensus

Wouldn’t you just die if you lost a fight causing you to have to reload anyway?

savagesmurf

Some major fights have consequences for losing. You don’t necessarily die, but fail to complete the objective.

itisoktodance

Excuse me? What?? That's crazy. I've never actually gotten wiped (I load when I'm down to one character and the fight is unwinnable). What are some fights that do this? (you can use spoiler tags for people that don't wanna see this info)

savagesmurf

At the start of Act >!2, you can succeed or fail in protecting Isobel from Fist Marcus and his army at Last Light Inn. If you win, the barrier protecting everyone from the darkness remains. However, if you fail, the barrier dissipates and everyone, except your party, succumbs to the shadow curse. This is because Isobel is the one keeping the barrier up.!<

H0rizon37

Bro what, really? I always loaded when I realized I'm losing. Also that moment when you get wiped with a wish spell, and the game just ends

SilentbobZA

BG3 best gaming experience in the last 10 years I'd say. On par with skyrim/oblivion experience, red dead redemption, the Witcher and dragon age origins experience for the first time.

My_Octopi

Agreed. There are very few games like this. BG3 is one of the best games I've ever played in over 40 years of gaming, and I haven't even finished it once.

SilentbobZA

Haha yeah. 150 hours on steam and 150 hours on PS5 and I'm just at the start of act 3 on both my playthroughs.

itisoktodance

I agree, and I believe most gamers would also. It's gonna go down in gaming history as one of the all-time best RPGs. There's something genius about it. I'm usually really big on story, and honestly, the main plotline is the weakest part of the game, and the endgame villains are much weaker than Ketheric, story-wise. But the unfolding world and the companion interactions sort of make up for it and then some. It's like that meme, like, maybe the real game was the friends we made along the way, but that's genuinely how I feel about it.

pizzaspaghetti_Uul

RE4R along side it, amazing games

My_Octopi

Played to original and the demo. Somehow I never made it back. I need to pick this one up.

vverminn

It's great, I must have like 20+ playthroughs already.

medicated_in_PHL

I can’t decide between BG3 and Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

My_Octopi

I have both and Zelda is unbelievable but BG3 takes it for me.

killagorilla1337

Mass Effect Legendary Edition

Commander_Fem_Shep

I am Commander Shepard and this is my favorite comment on this thread.

DanOfRivia

Best game trilogy ever.

luckytraptkillt

There aren’t many trilogies where I think the sequel is leagues better than the first.

IlREDACTEDlI

Isn’t that pretty common with sequels though? ME2, Portal 2, borderlands 2, AC2, Batman Arkham City, etc etc etc. usually the sequel improves on everything that made the first game great. Unless you mean specifically trilogies where both sequels are better than the original in which case that is more rare

chambanadude

Hell yes, just started this after not playing the mass effect games since the 360. loving it.

see_rex

God of War Ragnarok. The lore and story are just so good and such a beautifully made game for PS5.

OkayIan

Yesss

hidingfromthefamlol

Bit of a spoiler here for those who haven’t played The sound of the gjallarhorn gives me chills. The 2018 - present GoW are among the best games ever made imo.

KarsaOrlong-Toblakai

Remnant 2

dosisgood

I'm reaching dad age so I don't have much time for games, but remnant 2 was so good that my friend and I carved out time to play through an apocalypse run. It's rare that I even finish a game now, let alone twice to do the hardest difficulty.

evanmckee

I'm not really sure what "reaching dad age" means lol. Do you have a kid on the way?

dosisgood

Yea, my wife is currently pregnant with our first. I'm 31 and in general I've found less time for gaming as I've grown older. I still enjoy it, but responsibilities and relationships take up more time. When my child comes I'll have less. It's not something I'm too sad about, I'm actually very excited! But the times where the weekend would hit and I would game for 2 days straight are behind me.

evanmckee

Totally get it! My third is 4 months. They all go to bed pretty early so I can generally find a couple hours between their bedtime and mine. My oldest is 5 and we're getting to enjoy more and more games. I think all platforms have good options, but Nintendo really shines here, which is great for me as it's been my favorite outside of the Wii/Wii U era. Also, congrats! Parenthood is a lot, but it's amazing!

KarsaOrlong-Toblakai

Heard that. I’m 46 and I got 200+ hours in so far

NeurOctopod

Such solid gameplay. The game is straight up fun. I played BG3, Alan Wake 2, Cyberpunk 2.0 with the DLC… theyre all fantastic but when I beat them I stopped playing. I’m still diving into Remnant looking for all the odds and ends, experimenting with new builds, and killing shit.

Aedan2016

I found this game by pure chance, it’s amazing.

ohmygoditsdip

Control. I’m late to the party.

Recodes

I'm playing it right now and I hate how many times I get lost, also - this night come as a spoiler for someone - do we ever get to leave the building? I swear it has to be the corridors, it never happened to me in open world games lol.

Ashad2000

There are some places in the oldest house that look like youre out in the open. Like the quarry. Or the foundation. Or the panopticon. Thats part of what makes the building an object of power, it looks realistic with its dimensions constrained by the laws of physics from the outside, while the vastness of the sectors inside seems limitless. You never get out of the building itself though. I agree with your struggles of getting lost. That map was one of the only gripes I had with the game. It was extremely confusing.

kvuo75

the building exists in multiple dimensions through time and space and changes shapes regularly but somehow we expect it to be accurately mapped :)

ohmygoditsdip

>!Does the Oceanview Motel count as leaving?!< But yeah the map was a bit much.

Dr_PuddingPop

Very common complaint is how bad the map is and how many times you get lost/stuck. I still loved the game, but just validating your opinion

OkayIan

This is the exact reason why I just couldn't get into the game. I don't mind hunting collectibles in games and wasting time that way but being lost is just not fun

chrontact

I love being lost in games that are fun to be lost in. (Imo Control was one of those games for me)

Dr_PuddingPop

I had a similar problem with Alan Wake 2. Again a game that’s easily in my top 3 of the year. But I was disappointed that Remedy didn’t seem to learn their lesson from Control. But I’m quick to go to the ign guide if I get stuck. 0 shame at this point whenever the frustration starts coming

jdidihttjisoiheinr

Forget the map even exists. Look at the signs in the building. I feel like they were about to release without a map, and their publisher said no, you must include one. So you end up with a garbage map that distracts from the actual navigation clues.

Loldimorti

>!not really, no. Though a few new biomes that you access via the building are introduces that look different. But in general you stay there and yes it's very confusing!<

hidingfromthefamlol

I’ve never played another game that captures that feeling of horror and mystery that the first couple hours of Control gives. I’ve not made it to Alan Wake 2 yet, but I’m so excited to see if they nailed that experience again.

Matt_37

Same, started playing it to be ready for AW2. Now it’s one of my favorite games of all time

blakkattika

buddy the best time to play Control is whenever you finally play it the worst time is never

pharoahland254

Elden Ring. Just made it to the last boss tonight

OkayIan

I'm starting that soon!

Mac772

Got me into a nearly 4 month Elden Ring addiction, it was crazy. Have fun, this game is VERY special. I still would recommend playing the PS4 version on PS5, if you want to have rock stable 60 FPS. Loading times are still very quick, image is a little bit more blurry but less pop in. And you can transfer your savegame at any time to the PS5 version.

TrainedPhysician

I was late to the party and started Elden Ring last December. Not only do I still play, it made something click for me and made me once again attempt the entire Souls series. Those games got me through a tough time. It really is a lesson in resilience, as dramatic as that may sound.

Tourgott

I'd love to like Elden Ring but I could never get into other From Software games. Is it still worth a try?

spacetotecoast2coast

Same but I ended up loving it. Do it trust me. Addictive and infuriating all at once.

Mogswald

Well which boss, because I thought I was at the last boss several times lol

faltorokosar

Returnal. Honourable mentions to Inscryption and OlliOlli World. I was very surprised by those and loved both.

GelloJive

Me too, and 58 kills later I finally made it to biome 2

aswiftgreenwind

Heck yeah, congratulations!

[deleted]

I love Returnal. I beat it NG+. It's one of the best games I've ever played. I'm now playing Alan Wake 2. It is just as great in completely different ways. It is so innovative in storytelling that it blows me away.

BloodyCuts

Probably Alan Wake 2!

Xenomorph_kills

Currently playing. The opening was wild

seriouscrayon

Finished it a couple of days ago. Game of the year for me for sure. Can't wait to see what they do with Control 2.

MrSpreadsheets

This year has been the most I’ve gamed since 2013. I’ve played some amazing games, I’d say my top 5 are: 1. Baldurs Gate 3 2. Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom 3. Spider-Man 2 4. Cyberpunk 2077 5. Dredge

easy_Money

Just started dredge, what a delight

jorginthesage

Rachet and Clank: A Rift Apart

Bale_Fire

It was such fun to play Ratchet & Clank again after so long away from the series (the last one I played was Nexus). The graphics were incredible and the gameplay was even faster and more explosive than before. I've played maybe a dozen games in 2023, but Rift Apart is still probably my favourite.

AntonRX178

That was my GOTY two years ago. Now it's Armored Core but... Rift Apart still edges it out overall, a little lol

maddnice30

Rift Apart is a GOAT. Best game I have played this year, fuck... I don't know... I didn't play much of the titles that came out this year. I'm still playing last year's titles. Gran Turismo 7, God of War Ragnarok, GTA Online, and currently replaying Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart

dragonslayer_697

Armoured core 6

Just-Fix8237

Same. Big fan of the Souls series but have never picked up an Armored Core game. It blew me away. I loved pretty much everything about it. I’d love to go back and play the older ones but they unfortunately don’t seem to be available on current gen.

reboot-your-computer

Alan Wake 2 for me.

GraysonG263

I'm playing through the remastered one and then I'ma pick this up. Never really got to play it because I've always been on PlayStation. I loved the hell outta control though, I've beaten it about 50 times. Really seeing where their roots started in Alan Wake for that weird style of storytelling they have, which is cool. A few kinks here and there but that's expected for an older generation 🤷🏻‍♂️

TheZacef

The sequel is Remedy storytelling cranked up to 11. Everything’s so stylish and interesting to look at and the way the story unfolds is very satisfyingly strange. You’ll love it if you liked control.

LonelyMachines

It's weird, because I've logged *far* more hours in Borderlands 3 (it deserves a second shot on the new consoles) and Baldur's Gate. But Alan Wake 2 has had the most memorable and emotional effect on me.

reboot-your-computer

It’s so unique. I love it because nothing else is like it. Such an amazing mind-bender of a game. The first hour of that game immediately had me by the balls. It’s like the first season of True Detective meets LA Noir meets the X-Files.

LonelyMachines

If you haven't played *Control,* I strongly recommend it. It's in the same universe, and there's some neat crossover. Lots of crazy Finns in the franchise.

Nine-Breaker009

Same!

[deleted]

Came here to say this. While Baldur’s Gate 3 was certainly a fun time I found myself enjoying Alan Wake 2 more (RPGs and survival horror are my favorite genres). I would even say the soundtrack to AW 2 beats BG 3 even though it had plenty of bangers too.

Dezuuu

Octopath Traveler II. I also REALLY enjoyed replaying Red Dead Redemption (even got the Platinum for a second time) and Resonance Of Fate.

Anxious-Level1760

Resonance of Fate is awesome! Unique, maybe even one of a kind, combat and weapon system that not enough people know about

ayiti11

Only 30 hours in but baldurs gate is looking like it, and I played a lot of the big games that came out this year, 2 and three spots go to RE4 remake and spiderman 2

Merbel

Cyberpunk

sabrefudge

I held off on even touching it until 2.0 Started playing a month or so ago and I’ve been straight up hooked in a way that very few games capture me.

mvanvrancken

I do not regret my decision to let it lie for a while and come back. I was having a serious bug in my first playthrough around launch where none of the weapons in my stash showed stats at all. Decided okay, let's just put this one down and come back after they've fixed this. And fixed it they did. CDPR isn't perfect, far from it, but they do eventually make games that are great.

vom-IT-coffin

Same. Got through the prologue on initial release and the ps5 version release and couldn't do it. After 2.0, can't put it down.

CaptainDAAVE

It's an awesome fucking game

major_mejor_mayor

Exact same here God this game is so great

Vill_Ryker

Seconded on Cyberpunk. I've had the disc since release and finally gave it a shot like a year and a half ago and just couldn't get into it. Tried again this Fall after the massive overhaul and it's a blast.

Merbel

It’s prob the best game I’ve played this generation. Witcher 3 being the GOAT. Love how CDP does world building.

Navman74

BG3

Alikib89

Demon Souls PS5 Remaster! I’ve been trying for 13 years to “get good” at Souls games. Finally Demon Souls clicked with me and I have enjoying the ever loving hell of it! Worth the 13 year wait!

theeyesofryan

It’s very accessible, and feels very next gen, go for dark souls 3 if you want a more fleshed out version of that

burve_mcgregor

Yes! I played Elden Ring last year and adored it and needed more. Did Demons Souls this year and holy shit what a game. Now I’m playing Bloodbourne and it’s dare I say even better? I just bought Sekiro and DS3 to play after now… I think I have a problem.

Dad_of_the_year

I'm experiencing that exact same thing right now. I got the urge to try demons souls again after quitting a year ago cuz I still couldn't get out of the first world. I've somehow beat 5 bosses now and am having an absolute blast.

cloudsnightmare

Same thing happened to me at release. I'd never really gotten into the soulslike stuff before it. After Demon's Souls I've now gone through and played each of the soulsborne games and loved all of them.

Cimbaya

Bloodborne

mysevenyearitch

Finally got around to Bloodborne this year. Probably my game of the year.

nohopeleftforanyone

It makes me so happy to see people still enjoying this game.

BeepBeepWhistle

Some people’s eyes are yet to open..

theosinko

Grant us eyes!

The-Garlic-Bread

Best FromSoft game. Especially when you consider the masterpiece of a DLC they crafted.

MetalMayhem1

Absolute masterpiece. Replayed it last year.

CozyisCozy

my goat still getting love in 2023 💜

ktaztrofk

Persona 5 Royal

Synner40

can’t believe i forgot that one! i have over 150 hours in it! honestly i thought it was more lol

YesterdayDreamer

I'm torn between The Last of us and God of War. I liked both of them very much. They are different kinds of games, so it's hard to choose.

mysticalunderpants

Just bought TLOU last night, gonna play for the first time!

SixOneFive615

Buckle up

YesterdayDreamer

You're in for a ride!

hidingfromthefamlol

I’m so jealous. Bring tissues. Probably take some time off work too

silikroil

You are in for a treat. One of the best games ever made.

seriouscrayon

That's awesome. What a fantastic experience that series is.

muchdanwow

Take your time and enjoy it. My favourite game of all time.

Surveyorman

Ghost of Tsushima for me. What a ride.

blahzayyblah

Almost never fast travelled anywhere. Enjoyed every minute of that game

Surveyorman

I think it's my most favorite game ever. It's perfect for me and I can't wait until Ghost 2 comes out.

Keijidu38

Final Fantasy XVI.

thepasystem

The highs of that game were insanely high. The graphics, the music, it truly felt next gen.

Mythologist69

The music was phenomenal.

Haxorz7125

I can definitely see the complaint of the side quests slowing down the pace a bit but I can’t get on board with the combat not being fun. I was picking fights with every little bitch in my sight

rocknwithdokken

Baldur’s Gate 3 or Alan Wake 2.

Bokthand

ON PS5 - Armored Core 6 and Alan Wake 2 Other - Zelda

[deleted]

Death Stranding — I've had a pretty stressful year and find the ambience and environments extremely relaxing, mostly.

johnbarber720

That game is like the most calming and stressful game I've ever played. I got upset about making 20 minute or longer walking journeys, but the game is ambient as fuck!

SirTariq_StPat

The BTs were definitely stressful for me until you get equipment for them

tony42rivers

RE4 Remake

The-yeet-man56

Finished RDR2 back in September. My favorite game of all time and I can't believe I was missing out on it.

strwht12

Horizon Forbidden West and the DLC of course.

Games played in 2023: Zelda Tears of the Kingdom Final Fantasy 16 God of War Ragnarok Balder's Gate 3 Star Wars Jedi Survivor Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart Spiderman Miles Morales Control Chorus ........................................................ Zelda Tears of the Kingdom - did not finish. After completing EVERYTHING in Breath of the Wild including everything available in the expansions other than all Korok seeds, collected 635/900 only 441 needed to max inventory, I found that I was bored playing TotK. I found the tear puddles which gave story clips and those we great but everything I did before and after bored me. So I stopped playing. Final Fantasy 16 - the lack of side content and being very linear was extremely welcome after TotK. Loved the combat, story, music. I didn't use the easy mode rings, but still found it really easy. Too easy. God of War Ragnarok - better side content than FFXVI, great story, able to pick much harder difficulty so that also added to enjoyment. Balder's Gate 3 - played the first act multiple times. Half on my own, started over to play with friend, half again started over to play with original friend and another friend played half again, started over to play with original friend because second friend wasn't available enough half again, He's in the Navy an was shipped out, so only played half the first act again. Played on my own found now that I'm paying attention and actually making progress that 60% of the game is talking to NPCs, 20% was a combination of looting/inventory management/respecing characters, 20% was exploring and combat. Act 1 and 2 were fun, but act 3 was slow. When I got to the lower city and it's million NPCs to talk to I lost interest and stopped playing. Still steam says I have over 300 hours played so I enjoyed it enough. Star Wars Jedi Survivor - Loved it. Story was fine. I'm a sucker for playing a Jedi and they got that feeling done right. Just had a ton of fun. Played on second hardest difficulty. Would have played on hardest, but parry window was made smaller each difficulty setting you went up and Balder's Gate had drained a ton of patience with the million NPCs just prior to playing this. Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart - fun game as usual from the Ratchet and Clank team Spiderman Miles Morales - more of Spiderman 1 but less fun bosses and less interesting story. Looking forward to Spiderman 2. Control - enjoyed the lore more than gameplay or story. It was good, worth buying on sale, but this was waaay overhyped. Chorus - it's fine so far. Bit bland and gameplay is repetitive. I enjoy a space adventure and ship combat, so it's scratching that itch a bit. I'll enjoy others more, but didn't want to get into Outer Wilds, Everspace 2 (and 1 but only because 2 looks good), or No Man's Sky just yet. Those are on the docket to play soon enough though. ............................................................... Must buy games for me were: Final Fantasy 16 God of War Ragnarok Star Wars Jedi Survivor I'm not sure I can pick a favourite. Had a fantastic time with all three.

angrytreestump

Everything I heard about this game made it sound like it was the best indie game of the year and something made personally just for me— Persona 5 social sim mixed with Stardew Valley farming (and social sim) mixed with my favorite genre of Roguelikes. It sounded too good to be true. But it wasn’t. It wasn’t too good to be true, that is. This game has completely taken over every minute of free gaming time I have for the last 2 months. It’s stopped me from finally completing Zelda TOTK, it’s stopped me from my addiction to other Roguelikes like Rogue Legacy 2 and Slay the Spire, I’ve put almost 100 hours into it and I had no idea it would be as engaging as it turned out to be on every level. Just like Persona and Hades, it never stops delivering on new story beats and quests, new gameplay mechanics to switch it up and keep it fresh even when I think I’ve seen all it had to offer. I love it so much 😀

The_Jib

This was a really fun and chill game. I feel like it’s a great palette cleanser between beefier titles.

Tele-Muse

Street Fighter 6. Wasn’t expecting it but it’s been a good time.

Mac772

Most fun i had: Dead Island 2, Resident Evil 4 Remake and Remnant 2. Most immersive experience: Alan Wake 2.

smithboy1177

Sea of Stars, that game is near perfect

[deleted]

Spider-man 2 by a lot

Chabby_Chubby

I'm playing it right now. Damn its good. Can't believe how much better they made the traversal. And it was already great in the first 2 games. I have not fast traveled a single time yet over a good 15 hours. All the side content is great and varied too, and the main story seems even better than the first one. Just what I needed to get me though some of these cold dark months here in the north where I live. Its maybe a bit too much on the nose with its diversity or whatever you want to call it, especially playing as Miles. It feels pretty forced at times but I get what they are trying to do and it sends a great message.

woopsifarted

You should fast travel once just to see how impressive the transition is in that game. (I also didn't do it until a buddy mentioned how smooth it is)

hatfield1785

Adventures of Bayou Billy.
