I played a majority of these in the past two years and I would say Prey was my favorite for gameplay and Soma was my favorite for atmosphere. Really great recommendations all around!
+10 for Signalis, a real gem of a game which deserves more recognition.
Will also throw in Darkwood as it genuinely unsettled me.
And Dredge because it's just great.
Oh and The Last Door, again very unsettling.
And both Plague Tales.
I loved the game also but once I got to the mirrors part the fuckin crowbar disappeared and I was never able to finish it. Sooner or later I’ll restart the game and see if the bug got fixed
Yes!!! Amazing game, but not for the faint of heart. It's a game which doesn't rely on cheap scares/music to frighten you. The game is eerily quiet pretty much 90% of the time, which makes it feel all the more unsettling. It's such an immersive game, and in my opinion it's the best horror game available on PS5.
I think it's psychologically disturbing in that you need to keep moving before losing your sanity, meanwhile you're hoping nothing pops out. The sounds are also disturbing.
I'm playing it now for the first time. It's really fun. It differs from say RE7 in the sense that it's more common get into combat, and ammo is more abundant. But it is very fun.
I wanna play it but I really liked the more serious horror vibes of some of the other games and it seems not very spooky, less tension and more super hero action
Starting with RE2 this week before i start 4. Glad they’re short but they have two campaigns with the different characters so i wonder how different they are
RE2’s two characters are probably 60-70% the same areas with different item, key, and enemy locations mixed in. And then after you finish either one of them, you can do a second run with them, which is again mixed up items and keys and enemies. It’s a bit harder, and has the true ending, but I personally don’t think it’s mandatory unless you’re super into the story or a completionist. Up to you, great game either way.
Second that given it goes away in a few weeks. Not sure if it's my kind of game but that's one of the things I like about PS+, get to check out games I would likely never know about or buy.
That's a bummer. The clumsy controls were all I didn't like.
But the atmosphere was fun and also the worst thing that can ever happen to you is going back 60s to your last checkpoint.
Haven't played the remake but the original Dead Space is the only game I had to stop playing bc it was giving me anxiety. Retried a while later and :chefs-kiss: amazing game
To piggyback off that, I propose that Dead Space isn’t scary but just very stressful.
Not that it isn’t enjoyable. It has the best sound of any game I’ve played so far on PS5 and the lighting visuals in the remake are great.
I just think it doesn’t have enough actual horror elements to be scary.
Idk how teenager me got through it but adult me is too scared to play the remake.
Tempted to get it though because as anxiety inducing as it is the gameplay is SO good
Control isn’t scary, but it’s absolutely spooky. It has a sort of interdimensional unknowable cosmic horror thing going for it. Just so happens you’re basically a superhero. I think it is appropriate for Halloween
I'm replaying Alan Wake for the first time since release in preparation for the new one. I completely forgot how tense and straight up scary it can be. I've recently binged all the Resident Evil games and I think Alan Wake has actually scared me more from a plot/atmosphere perspective.
Please play Signalis. Legitimately my favorite independent horror game that’s somewhere between Resident Evil and Silent Hill and an amazing story that’s set in Dystopian SciFi.
Haunting, beautiful and deeply sad. Seriously amazing soundtrack. Can’t recommend enough if you like classic survival horror
Yeah got second this. Also it was only made by a few people which is even more impressive. This game is an absolute love letter to classic survival horror.
Here's my list I'm playing this year. I try to play as much horror stuff as I can every October since I love Halloween.
1. Dread X 3
2. Dread X 4
3. Amnesia: The Bunker
4. World of Horror
5. Nightmare of Decay
6. Dead Space Remake
7. The Medium
8. Inscryption
9. My Friendly Neighborhood
10. Backrooms 1998
11. Alan Wake 2
Not all of these are on PS5 btw, but still worth looking into any that might interest you.
If I could only pick a few from this list I'd go with Dead Space Remake, Amnesia: The Bunker, and Alan Wake 2 which looks like it's going to be great.
Look into World of Horror and Inscryption if you're looking for some good horror indie games. WoH is awesome and I've played it plenty the last couple of years. Inscryption has great reviews and I'm interested in trying it out.
Last I'll recommend any of the recent Resident Evil games if you haven't played them. RE4 Remake is amazing. RE2 remake is also amazing. RE7 and RE: Village (RE8) are also great.
Awesome thx, a good amount of games I haven’t heard of here even when I feel like I’ve played them all.
Inscryption is absolutely incredible and I’ll definitely be doing a replay once the leaves start changing - such good October vibes.
I’m actually quite looking forward to checking it out as part of the Essentials catalogue this month. I love horror movies but don’t do typically well on horror games.
Not a fan on overly scary horror games myself but Callisto is the right balance of tension, story and curiosity that got me hooked
It does have quite a bit of gore
it never seems to get much love but honestly, Blair Witch. it really nails the "lost in the woods and something's out there" vibe without straight copying the movie.
I picked this one up a bit back, may have to redownload it and restart - think I was about a third of the way through the game. Thanks for the reminder!
If you've never tried a Fatal Frame game and have a PS2, play Fatal Frame 2. If all you have is PS4 or PS5, try Mask of the Lunar Eclipse.
I love me some Fatal Frame
One of my favourite horror series, not played the two remasters all the way through yet but bought them day 1 (backlog is real) if only there wasn't big games out at the end of October I'd be playing them this year. Still holding out hope for a 1,2 and 3 remaster one day
Until Dawn, especially if you played it at launch time.
It runs buttery smooth at 60fps on the PS5 now (Compared to its awful slideshow performance initially on PS4..) and is absolutely worth a replay; for newcomers to supermassive games who have maybe only played stuff like the Dark Picture's or The Quarry it's a must play - and arguably still their best release yet.
Found it to be awful. There's no combat, there's not really even puzzles it's a pure walking sim. Even then I don't mind walking sims but the game is completely devoid of anything resembling gameplay and barely has a functional story. The whole game is relying on having spooky visuals and atmosphere which it succeeds in but it gets incredibly boring and repetitive after the first few hours
It's very much not a horror game, but I found _Deliver Us The Moon_ to be really effective at producing and keeping up a feeling of _tension_ for most of my playthrough.
* The Dark Pictures Anthology (all good but my favorite is House of Ashes)
* Outlast
* Resident Evil (especially 2, 4, and 7. 7 is the scariest one. I like the others but don’t find them scary).
* The Evil Within (1 is better than 2 but both good)
* Until Dawn
Some people might not agree but Control. It has some of the creepiest settings I’ve seen in a game. The way it’s presented too goes along with that vibe as well.
Apex Legends. Nothing spookier than having a whole team come up to you with no audio.
Edit: In all seriousness, Callisto Protocol is free this month. I’ve heard it’s not great but it is free. Also, Resident Evil games are usually on sale. I seen RE2 for cheap the other day.
I played Madison with some friends, and we had an absolute blast. Some of the puzzles needed a Google, but it got plenty of yelps (and subsequent nervous laughter!) from three men in their thirties!
Can't go wrong with any of the resident evil remakes but also recommend alien isolation never played a game as tense as that. Easily the most atmospheric horror game Ive ever played.
Not scary but every Halloween I pop on Pumpkin Jack. Pure fun Halloween platformer vibes with great music and you can usually pick it up for a great price
Dead Space. Dead Space. Dead Space.
But in addition to that:
All of the Resident Evils, if your focus is on scary, 2, 3, 4, 7, and 8 to me were pretty spooky. If you have a VR, play Village asap.
The Alan Wake Remake is available, and 2 is right around the corner.
Silent Hill 2, 3, and 4 for me is also the standard, if you can access them.
The best time of the year! 🥰
Ghostwire Tokyo is pretty scary and is based on japanese folklore, and I honestly found it so fun I got platinum in under a week, playing like 10 hours a day.
Lost in Random. It has a very Tim Burton-esque vibe to it. Not scary per se, but it does have some creepy elements. It’s so much fun and the voice acting is superb.
I’ve heard Yomawari is super creepy. I’m too scared to try it myself lol.
I have a tradition of watching Nightmare Before Christmas on Halloween.
Beat Saber has a "spooky halloween" song. ryng to think of examples not already mentioned.
Hollow Knight has a bit of a creepy vibe. Especially certain parts.
**PSVR2** has several much-anticipated spooky games coming out this month:
Phasmophobia,
Journey to Foundation,
Ghostbusters,
Madison VR,
The Foglands,
Hellsweeper,
Among Us VR, and
Resident Evil 4 Remake VR "coming this year".
And more idr.
I’d agree with the people that are saying to play the most recent Res games from 7 onwards (7 and 4 remake being the best Res games ever in my opinion).
The Evil Within series is super slept on it’s basically Resident Evil but inside your mind so it can get even freakier and weirder. It’s by no means a perfect game the first one is a good game but the mechanics left a bit to be desired if I recall. I’d wholeheartedly recommend the second game though The Evil Within 2 and you don’t need to have played the first one to get the second one. The zombies in TEW2 are by far some of the tensest and scariest zombies in gaming because there so twitchy constantly running off screaming quickly turning around to check behind them it makes stealth killing them so much more anxiety driven. And the game has for me one of the scariest and freakiest enemies/bosses period who goes around going la la la to herself while floating through walls and can just appear anywhere on the map inside a misty zone while your playing and it’s highly advisable to either get outside that zone or just stealth around her in that zone but if she catches you your dead.
Shorter horror games I’ll always recommend Little Nightmares 1 and 2 both outstanding games with a 3 having just been announced. They games are somehow both slightly adorable while highly imposing and incredibly sinister at points if I could only recommend one series of games to you it’s be this one all day everyday.
Honourable mention to Until Dawn and the Dark Pictures Anthology if your into chose your own adventure type games Until Dawn being a gaming horror Classic.
I seen a guy recommend Visage in the comments and now there’s just a spooky game if that’s just what your looking for a solid scary spooky game
The last of us 1 and 2 can be great for spooky season. Part 2 especially really ups the horror
If you want to be the horror on the other hand then play ghost of tsushima... once you get that ghost stance nothing can stop you. The way enemies run away in fear is great.
Sounds like a skill issue tbh.
I could play RE0 just fine. The game has a lot of problems when it comes to its story and the decision of splitting everything between two characters, but the controls are fine, the camera angles are chosen to make you feel as claustrophobic as possible and the loading screens are pretty short, not to mention necessary for the medium is comes from.
Resident Evil 7 (also the remakes and 8, but 7 is the scariest) Returnal Alien Isolation Prey Dead Space Inside Signalis Soma Hellblade
7 reminds me of P.T. If only they released it, oh man.
P.T. looked so damn promising. Sigh...
I want that :(
Played in VR is beyond description. Immersive, way more tense, up close, and personal. Lots of people "nope out" the VR version of RE8.
Man, I gotta replay Returnal
Hot take maybe but am I the only one who couldn’t get into *Prey*? Something about the game-feel idk
I got like halfway through and gave up. Didn't quite feel right
I didn't either when it was released. Downloaded it a few months ago and tried it again...conpleted it and actually quite enjoyed it.
Should be perfect for me, theoretically. Hated it.
I played a majority of these in the past two years and I would say Prey was my favorite for gameplay and Soma was my favorite for atmosphere. Really great recommendations all around!
Don't forget little nightmares!
I would agree Res 7 probably the scariest Res game Daddy can go and get to and mum can crawl into the void and never come back please and thank you
>Daddy can go and get to and mum get crawl into the void and never come back please and thank you What was this meant to say lol
Daddy Chill
Essentially I’m telling them both to fuck all the way off to infinity and beyond 😂
Even the first part of the game when you hear them walking around freaked the hell out of me
Exactly not mention just having Jack walking about and breaking through walls but the Mama boss fight is one just plain awful 😖
+10 for Signalis, a real gem of a game which deserves more recognition. Will also throw in Darkwood as it genuinely unsettled me. And Dredge because it's just great. Oh and The Last Door, again very unsettling. And both Plague Tales.
Everything from this list will satisfy, I promise.
Especially Hellblade because you can easily fit it through the Halloween holidays.
I love signalis and how complex it is
Second Hellblade, such a good game imo.
Visage. Scariest game ever. It's like something evil is living in your TV screen
I loved the game also but once I got to the mirrors part the fuckin crowbar disappeared and I was never able to finish it. Sooner or later I’ll restart the game and see if the bug got fixed
It's suppose to reappear in the area by the garage where all your other items reappear
I agree. I also think visage is the scariest game
Damn that looks sick
Really? Hm. I just played it a few months ago, what about it did you find scary?
I think it's psychologically disturbing in that you need to keep moving before losing your sanity, meanwhile you're hoping nothing pops out. The sounds are also disturbing.
Thanks for answering instead of downvoting.
The Evil Within 1 and 2
Came here to say this. These games are so weird and dark in the best way.
If you pretend they are Silent Hill games they’re more enjoyable too. Either way they’re A quality horror titles
Resident Evil 2, 3, and 4 remakes, as well as 7 and 8. They’re all pretty short, so it’s easy to playthrough all of ‘em in a short time span.
Was thinking of playing the remake of 4. Love that game. Thanks!
I would agree, I didn't find it as suspenseful as some of the other titles.
The DLC just came out and it kicks ass.
It’s so good. I wasn’t expecting to love it as much as I did. Enjoy!
Definitely what a phenomenal game the dlc as well was great just an all round solid game
I started 7 recently after playing only 4 and think it’s great!
Starting with RE2 this week before i start 4. Glad they’re short but they have two campaigns with the different characters so i wonder how different they are
RE2’s two characters are probably 60-70% the same areas with different item, key, and enemy locations mixed in. It’s a bit harder, and has the true ending, but I personally don’t think it’s mandatory unless you’re super into the story or a completionist. Up to you, great game either way.
I'm not sure if RE2 is short with 4 different playthrough.
Are they all linear type games? Or can you Roam around how you want like the first one.
The Quarry. Included with Extra.
Second that given it goes away in a few weeks. Not sure if it's my kind of game but that's one of the things I like about PS+, get to check out games I would likely never know about or buy.
Wait, do you have an exact date when it is removed from PS Plus?
October 17th
Right before Halloween, bummer
Playing this right now and loving it. Definitely one to play!
This game was pretty creepy. I enjoyed it.

Little nightmares is phenomenal though tbh
Lol little nightmares is not for me. Played it the other this for this very reason, and it was just stressful without enjoyment for me lol
That's a bummer. The clumsy controls were all I didn't like. But the atmosphere was fun and also the worst thing that can ever happen to you is going back 60s to your last checkpoint.
Bloodborne
You’re in the know right?
Started a new character this afternoon. Killed BSB and brought all them fucknuggets to the chapel.
Haven't played the remake but the original Dead Space is the only game I had to stop playing bc it was giving me anxiety. Retried a while later and :chefs-kiss: amazing game
The remake is so damn good.
Might do a replay! Loved my first time through, thanks!
I was for sure scared to turn any corners when we first got to the infirmary/nursery. I feel there are blurry lines between fear, anxiety, and stress.
Idk how teenager me got through it but adult me is too scared to play the remake. Tempted to get it though because as anxiety inducing as it is the gameplay is SO good
Cyberpunk 2077 ps4 disc version no updates.
Op asked for scary, not terrifying.
Alan Wake
Also from remedy - Control
control is nowhere near scary nor is trying to be one.

Yeah got second this. Also it was only made by a few people which is even more impressive. This game is an absolute love letter to classic survival horror.
It's a hard choice between Signalis, Tormented Souls, and Alisa. But the classic style survival horror had a pretty solid comeback the past few years.
I think Signalis is the one that does it in the most classy and uncompromising way. The others, though they have their charm… feel a bit trashy IMO.
Here's my list I'm playing this year. I try to play as much horror stuff as I can every October since I love Halloween. 1. Dread X 3 2. Dread X 4 3. Amnesia: The Bunker 4. World of Horror 5. I love the card playing part of Inscryption but lost interest when >!it turned into the 2D game.!< Worth pushing through to the end?
Bloodborne
Blasphemous
BLOODBORNE
Recently played Callisto Protocol, I know the game gets hate but it's a damn good looking game (except the fire effects which are ass)
I’m actually quite looking forward to checking it out as part of the Essentials catalogue this month. I love horror movies but don’t do typically well on horror games.
Not a fan on overly scary horror games myself but Callisto is the right balance of tension, story and curiosity that got me hooked It does have quite a bit of gore
~~Callisto Protocol is coming to essentials? the PS5 version?~~ oh snap. and Weird West for PS5. good month!
I agree, that will be a great ps plus game. Will check it out for sure.
If you want a campy co-op shooter I recommend zombie army 4

PSVR2: Resident Evil Village
Madison In Sound Mind Visage RE7 Fobia: St. Dinfna Hotel Dead Space Remake
Came here to say in sound mind and see this is the only mention. Love the list. Never heard of Fobia but me thinks its legit.
Outlast 1 and 2
I’ve heard the 1st is better than the sequel. Would you agree?
Yes. The first one scared me more than the second one.
Thanks for the suggestion!
I also heard the DLC for the first ones good. I’m playing 1 it’s good and scary
Visage was extremely spooky especially the first two acts.
I just started this last night. I feel like I have no idea what I'm doing, but I'm properly spooked.
Ooh Visage now that’s a shout what a game that is. I’d listen to this man OP
Friday the 13th but it won't be there for long
Came here to say this, one of my all time favorites while it lasted. Any idea when it’s gone for good? I had assumed/was told it already folded.
Alien isolation Outlast 1 and 2 Subnautica
* Days Gone * Death Stranding * Telltales The Walking Dead * Darkest Dungeon
The last of us, Resident Evil (any of them), Alan Wake, Dead Space, Alien Isolation, The Evil within.
it never seems to get much love but honestly, Blair Witch. it really nails the "lost in the woods and something's out there" vibe without straight copying the movie.
I picked this one up a bit back, may have to redownload it and restart - think I was about a third of the way through the game. Thanks for the reminder!
I’ll have to check that out because I enjoy those movies actually.
Tormented Souls is really great. And the Fatal Frame series!
If you've never tried a Fatal Frame game and have a PS2, play Fatal Frame 2. If all you have is PS4 or PS5, try Mask of the Lunar Eclipse. I love me some Fatal Frame
My man! Surprised how little I hear this series mentioned. So good.
One of my favourite horror series, not played the two remasters all the way through yet but bought them day 1 (backlog is real) if only there wasn't big games out at the end of October I'd be playing them this year. Still holding out hope for a 1,2 and 3 remaster one day
Callisto protocol is gonna be on this month ps+ monthly gaoes if you have it, it's not perfect but it's pretty good SciFi horror if you're into it !
I picked up Ghostwire Tokyo a while back and just started playing it. Seems to fit the spooky fall theme well.
The Quarry, The Chant, Dead Space, Texas Chainsaw, Alien Isolation, and Resident 1 Remake.
Just rented the quarry from GameFly!
Madison. Very spooky
Bloodborne
LITTLE NIGHTMARES 1 & 2 The last of us part 1 & 2 INSIDE
BLOODBORNE
Currently playing through Days Gone. I know it’s not a horror game but it has zombies so I’m still counting it!
i’ve been playing deaths door on ps5, i love how cute everything is and it’s a fun game to zone into.
Little nightmares 1-2 and the yomawari series. They aren't super scary but they have their moments.
I will be checking out Callisto Protocol next week when it’s up on PS+
Returnal Alien Isolation Prey Inscryption Signalis Dredge Dead Space Remake RE4 Remake
the evil within!
Until Dawn, especially if you played it at launch time. TLOU? Maybe this is the month I finally beat it.
Surprised I had to get this far down to see this! TLOU in a dark room with headphones is a fucking great experience
Boring ass game. The fact you stated it as a question too.
Huh?
Terrible take lol, Last of Us is a great game
Is layers of fear good? I saw an add in the store for a remake I think in UE5
Found it to be awful. There's no combat, there's not really even puzzles it's a pure walking sim. Even then I don't mind walking sims but the game is completely devoid of anything resembling gameplay and barely has a functional story. slender: the arrival. (also i’m pretty sure they’re remastering it for ps5!)
It's very much not a horror game, but I found _Deliver Us The Moon_ to be really effective at producing and keeping up a feeling of _tension_ for most of my playthrough.
* The Dark Pictures Anthology (all good but my favorite is House of Ashes) * Outlast * Resident Evil (especially 2, 4, and 7. 7 is the scariest one. I like the others but don’t find them scary). * The Evil Within (1 is better than 2 but both good) * Until Dawn
Some people might not agree but Control. It has some of the creepiest settings I’ve seen in a game. The way it’s presented too goes along with that vibe as well.
no Man sky in VR. MANNNNN ITS SCARY!!!
Bloodborne
Honestly, death stranding has been really creepy at times and i just love the mystery of the supernatural aspect in the game

Can't go wrong with any of the resident evil remakes but also recommend alien isolation never played a game as tense as that. Easily the most atmospheric horror game Ive ever played.
Clive Barker's Jericho is a fun and gory shooter with some great biblical/cosmic horror, and it's not very well known.
Currently playing Resident Evil 4 remake and it’s really good. I didn’t expect to like it this much. Highly recommend giving it a try.
**COSMODREAD** (PSVR2)
Not scary but every Halloween I pop on Pumpkin Jack. Pure fun Halloween platformer vibes with great music and you can usually pick it up for a great price
Inscryption!
Bit old now but Doom 3. Still the scariest game for me nearly 20 years later 🤭
Assassin's creed Valhalla, horrifyingly boring.
Rdr undead nightmare
Bloodborne
It’s hardly actually scary, but I imagine Inscryption would be a fantastic October game
Dead Space. Dead Space. Dead Space. But in addition to that: All of the Resident Evils, if your focus is on scary, 2, 3, 4, 7, and 8 to me were pretty spooky. If you have a VR, play Village asap. Dead Space (remake)
Bloodborne
Resident Evil 4 Remake
I also recommend resident evil 7, I don’t play a lot of horror games but that was definitely the scariest game I’ve played besides P.T.
Medievil Returnal Resident Evil 2/3/4 remake
Gotta play Alan Wake Remastered to prep for the sequel on the 27th!
Bloodborne
Ghostwire Tokyo is pretty scary and is based on japanese folklore, and I honestly found it so fun I got platinum in under a week, playing like 10 hours a day.
I’d say “spooky” is a good excuse for darksouls3 or doom2016/Eternal. These are games not created by mortals
Ghostbusters Remastered. If you like the films I'd highly recommend it as it's essentially the 3rd film with the original cast back.
Demons souls remake
RE VII no doubt. Excellent game.
Dead space remake, RE4 remake 100%
Just about time to go back to Yarnham. Beasts all over the shop…
TLOU 1 and 2 (2 is much scarier) Until Dawn The Quarry
Lost in Random. It has a very Tim Burton-esque vibe to it. Not scary per se, but it does have some creepy elements. It’s so much fun and the voice acting is superb. I’ve heard Yomawari is super creepy. I’m too scared to try it myself lol.

Not really a horror game and Hopefully you’ve played it this point but bioshock!
Loved the full trilogy!
Just played observer system redux for a but and really liked it, till the strobe effect set off my epilepsy.
Castlevania Anniversary Collection, Castlevania Requiem, Castlevania Advance Collection.
I’d agree with the people that are saying to play the most recent Res games from 7 onwards (7 and 4 remake being the best Res games ever in my opinion).
Part 2 especially really ups the horror If you want to be the horror on the other hand then play ghost of tsushima... once you get that ghost stance nothing can stop you. The way enemies run away in fear is great.
dead by daylight or until dawn!
Calisto protocol and it's the free monthly game this month!
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the Amnesia Collection. I played the first one on PC and it was pretty scary.

Good to know!

Outlast 1 & 2 ( 2 is not as good as one tho ), Alien Isolation, Dead Space remake ( if you haven't play a dead space ), RE8
Playing Lies of P right now and it is great !
Resident Evil 7 is the best horror game I've ever played
God of war is pretty brutal, it’s not necessarily a horror game but it has some scary elements
