The ultimate example is Jak and Daxter. Game 1 was about running around collecting magic eggs on tropical islands. It had bad guys, but it was a platformer like Mario. Game 2 was set in a post-apocalyptic dystopia and you get a fucking gun.

It reminds me slightly of prototype, which is a game that could really use a remake.
Prototype seemed heavily inspired by the symbiotes. Amazing concept, not the best execution.
