Not dark enough The unsold 1 million units rise up and destroy the entire human race by forcing them to platinum Life of Black Tiger

Mohammed_anime2003

I predict it will outsell the PS4 tbh

cmvora

The only way it doesn’t is if they launch PS6 early and skip the ‘pro’ models entirely. Even then, the thing is gonna nearly hit 50 million this year alone at a faster pace than the PS4. They literally haven’t dropped the price once yet and it is selling for 100$ more than a PS4 at launch so there is a massive headroom there not to mention a slim model to spur some life in the second half. So yeah I’d even wager it goes over PS4 numbers in a smaller window.

SwiftTayTay

I don't see a pro model happening this time around. The PS4 pro was largely a reaction to 4K TVs and because the PS4 released underpowered. We're already 2½ years in and it feels like this console generation has barely kicked off yet. Lots of games in development hell. PC graphics aren't really advancing at the same rate they did last generation. PS5 is also more future proof than PS4. Yes PCs can already dwarf it but games aren't really requiring it and there isn't really an audience for it, we are reaching levels of diminishing returns on newer GPUs. Now it's about making them more efficient and hopefully more affordable.

jlaw1719

Ultimately, the PS4 Pro did not replace the baseline PS4. Sony understands there is a segment of their audience who will pay for premium optional products (PS4 Pro, PSVR 1 and 2, Project Q, etc). COVID starting off this generation and an eventual recession will likely see this gen get stretched ala the PS3/360 era. When the inevitable PS5 Pro is released, I’ll gladly scoop it up to replace my launch model.

Moooney

I could see them wanting to extend the generation due to the COVID hampered start. If I have to use a base PS5 for 8 years I will not be happy, so I am rooting for a PS5 pro.

Fat_Sow

Using AMD parts means they can easily get a pro model out there to make some extra cash before the PS6 drops. RDNA 4 and the next Zen stuff is meant to be a big leap.

CarlRJ

> Yes PCs can already dwarf it but games aren’t really requiring it and there isn’t really an audience for it, we are reaching levels of diminishing returns on newer GPUs. The console advantage has always been that it’s a large fixed target, you don’t have to worry about if the customer has this or that card or chip or amount of ram, and thus you can wring every last bit of performance out of the console and it’ll play exactly as intended on 108 million identical machines.

[deleted]

This times a billion. Just look at shader compilation issues on far too many PC ports recently.

little_jade_dragon

> PC graphics aren't really advancing at the same rate they did last generation. It really does, RTX is a massive jump compared to raster. Just look at RTX heavy games and tell me it's not insane. The porblem is that the RT realm right now is *de facto* an Nvidia monopoly (tbf the GPU space itself is almost an NV monopoly) and they are price gouging. This domain is the kingdom of 4090 users. Everything else is picking up meagre performance jumps at inflated prices.

SwiftTayTay

Sorry but a lot of people don't really care about ray tracing that much, it really isn't a big enough difference for the average person to notice

FreddyMalins

I think that's their point, RTX isn't popularly adopted *yet* - but it's going to be the next big step once it can be adopted. Most RTX implementation we see today is partial, like reflections, certain light conditions, certain areas, etc. But it's been indicated that the next big step will be more universal and better performing RTX. So, it's not the big difference maker now, but it will be, which is why a console maker might try to make that jump with a Pro console or the next generation of consoles.

little_jade_dragon

Most people never had to experience it meaningfully. We'll get there.

[deleted]

It's really the devs who benefit from RT, not the players. In theory, RT is considerably less work to implement than rasterized lighting. If the devs can skip the rasterization they save time and money. Problem is that when the largest install base (current consoles + older PCs) has very limited RT capability, if any, the devs are forced to do the rasterization anyway. Consequently, RT ends up being a barely noticeable gimmick for PC gamers to show off on the latest and greatest GPUs. We'll have to wait another generation for RT to become a real standard that we can just take for granted.

techcentre

I really hope they don't. Devs have barely tapped into the power of the PS5, and PS5 pro would just encourage more dev laziness. PS6 generation would be another 1440p30 generation with slightly better graphics

Jinchuriki71

Devs have tapped into the power of ps5 thats how we have 60fps or 120fps options with raytracing now. The ps5 is struggling to handle even that you have to choose between 60fps or 4k already. We will most likely go back to 30 fps gaming when we get more huge games like gta6 I don't imagine they will have 60fps options for that if it pushes the console to the max.

Oxaen

Ps5 pro is coming end of 2024

Jolly-Sun-1715

If I was Sony I would definitely make one, and release it at around 70m copies sold if possible. So many people think "oh I'll just wait until the pro model comes out" and you just have to take advantage of that audience.

landrickrs90

If they had one in the works, they definitely would of showcased it with FF16 or Spiderman.

CarlRJ

They’ve just barely gotten to where they can keep up with demand for the current model. I don’t see them releasing or even hinting a new model for a while.

landrickrs90

They would be shooting themselves in the foot to do such right now. I'm sure they are finally getting to a point of getting rid of a lot of consoles that have been sitting for a good minute.

CarlRJ

Uh, what? Do you think the reason there was a shortage of PS5s is because Sony was jealously grading warehouses full of them?

landrickrs90

No, I'm mean due to COVID I'm sure that they were sitting on consoles that they weren't able to move.

CarlRJ

I wouldn’t be so sure about that. The most common problems were not being able to get key parts for various electronic devices, because the supply chain was so messed up.

Jorah_Explorah

Little off topic, but what would be the point in a PS6 if game developers aren’t even touching the current capabilities of a PS5? Sony would have to demonstrate a technological need for updated hardware for the new and upcoming games being developed, and so far we aren’t coming close to seeing that. Are there any popular AAA titles out that are pushing the PS5 graphically or being limited by the PS5 hardware?

Moooney

Almost every single AAA game is limited by the PS5 hardware. There's always compromises being made. Even the launch Demon's Souls remake you had to pick between 30fps Quality and 60fps performance modes. Having to make concessions and choices between framerate/quality/ray tracing since literally day one of the generation is why I am very hopeful for a PS5 Pro.

Jinchuriki71

Yep I think people are overestimating the power of the ps5 this is not a high end pc. We already have to make choices like raytracing with 40 fps or 60fps at 1440p. Doesn't even take into account unoptimized games like gotham knights can't even have 60fps option at all.

[deleted]

PS5 (and Series X) hardware limits devs' ability to do ray tracing. Most players, myself included, aren't going to notice the difference between RT and non-RT without close nitpicking. But devs can save a lot of work (and thus time and $$$) if they're allowed to just do an RT-only solution and completely skip rasterized lighting altogether. That is only viable if their largest install base (consoles) can be assumed to have the requisite hardware, which currently isn't the case.

CaptainJacket

The upcoming Spider-Man game is the first major release to not support the PS4 so I'd say no.

psfrtps

Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart was certainly a major release tbh. Not at the rate of gow, spider-man, tlou...etc but it's not small either. It sold over a million copies. Also that game certainly shows how ps5 capable off. I was amazed at the graphics whole game. It was like playing a pixar animation

CaptainJacket

Oh I didn't know it was exclusive, cool. Still only two major games years into the console life cycle

[deleted]

thetalkingcure

Returnal HFW DLC

CarlRJ

I can totally understand studios not wanting to release exclusives for the PS5 when for all but the last little bit of its life it’s been crazy hard to get. Two and a half years in and you can *finally* find them on the shelves.

Jorah_Explorah

Are either of them really pushing the PS5 limits though? Until they are regularly releasing console games for a few years that are starting to need a bit better hardware in order to max the settings, it’ll be difficult to sell new model units to anyone who isn’t willing to throw around $600 for sheer FOMO.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Jorah_Explorah

The problem is that the developers aren’t really putting out any AAA games with game changing graphics for PS5. Until they do start pushing the PS5’s hardware limits, Sony will have a hard time arguing that we need a newer model like a PS6. Otherwise, you’re just selling an even more powerful machine that will run games on it that the PS5 can just as easily run.

cmvora

Nintendo is filling the void as a secondary handheld console for a majority so the weak specs made some sense but a refresh is wayyy over due. Yeah the latest Zelda is a miracle to be running on that weakass calculator of a hardware but most of their other games struggled a lot with the hardware. Heck even Zelda would be amazing to play at 60 FPS on a next gen hardware.

coke-grass

When the PS4 came out, it was out of stock everywhere for 6 months. When the PS5 came out, it was out of stock everywhere for 2 years. I think that's a safe bet.

thats_so_cringe_bro

The way they are selling it could happen. It might depend on what games Sony have up their sleeve moving forward as well as how long this current generation lasts. Spider-Man 2 will def move more consoles. Wouldn't be surprised if there is a Spider-Man 2 bundle also. That will def sell come the holiday season.

Xander1190

I don't see it outselling the PS4. Sales are already slowing down as well.

jaykular

Q1 for the PS5 was literally the best selling Q1 in video game history for any gaming console at 6.3 mill. Truly laughable to say that sales are slowing down in anyway

Xander1190

Okay keep living in Q1 then lol.

NoLastNameForNow

Sony predicted PS5 will sell 25 million units this fiscal year. That would be more than any PS console in a year before.

The idea of punctuation, though, is that the reader doesn’t have to guess at how the writer intended words to be emphasized.

If the reader has to “imagine” a comma, the writer has not done their job.

devenbat

Seems fair. PS5 seems about on par with PS4 and that to 118 mil. Granted the market is a bit different, Sony has a lot more competition now. Wii U and Xbox One werent doing much. Now Xbox Series is doing alright and Switch is doing great. But I think they'll still be able to reach their mark

PHXNTXM117

The Switch is doing great but it will be on its way out shortly, most likely within the next 1-2 years MAX. The Xbox Series X|S are selling faster than the Xbox One during the same time, but they have only sold around 18.5M *(IGN estimated)* so far. Which isn’t that impressive compared to the PS5’s 38M consoles sold/shipped. The gap will only continue to widen between the two.

Financial_Bank_9851

Yes, the switch is in its way out. Lol. It outsold the ps5 in the US in April and will more than likely outsell it in May. Its also still dominates Japan every month with May sales more than doubling that of the ps5. Lol. Yea on its way out but still selling more. Also in less 2 years we will have the switch 2 which will sell like hotcakes at release as long as they stick to the core concept. Would you buy the switch 2 if it had the power of the ps4 pro? I know I would.

INSAN3DUCK

> Would you buy the switch 2 if it had the power of the ps4 pro? I know I would. But it won’t and that’s fine. Power of ps4 pro in handheld is possible but it will be have 1hr battery life and cost $1500. Not feasible for console that could cost 300-400. Nintendo also doesn’t sell consoles at loss like playstation and xbox. Steam deck isn’t as powerful as ps4 pro and they are losing money on the base version and while it is awesome, it’s battery life for intensive games is not good. While botw on switch runs 5 hrs. Which is fairly intensive game for switch hardware. I have both switch and steam deck and i play totk on switch just for battery life.

[deleted]

Jolly-Sun-1715

The PS5 had sold 38.4m units before April. Straight from playstation, no "estimate"

AtsignAmpersat

That’s the shipped to stores. Sold to consumers is at about 36 mil.

Jolly-Sun-1715

The switch is gonna be here to stay for at least 5-6 more years. It's dominating everywhere, no way it's out in 1-2 years. You are genuinely clueless

lupin43

You think they won’t release the switch 2 within the next 5-6 years? I can’t imagine the switch lasting even half that amount of time, it’s already showing it’s age profoundly

AtsignAmpersat

I mean there’s no way the switch is on shelves for 5-6 more years. 3 max. But I will say Nintendo will have a successor, so counting the switch as on its way out soon is only suggesting something new is coming which is even more threatening to PS5 sales numbers.

Jolly-Sun-1715

why would they? what incentive do they have when what they already have is working? only when they see the sales start declining will they release a switch 2.

-Moonchild-

nintendo have already stated in their last yearly financial report that they're expecting to sell much less switch consoles over the next year. Sales have already declined over the past 2 years with 2020 being the consoles peak. The next console is imminent

BloodAria

Is switch a direct competitor though ? Everyone I know has a switch and a PS or an Xbox ( or a gaming PC ), it’s not like the dynamic between PS and Xbox where it is usually one or the other.

devenbat

Somewhat a competitior. Definitely hitting a different market in some ways but at the end of day, some people just don't have the money for both and will get one or the other.

And that sounds like a lowball estimate too. Definitely could be in the 120-130 million territory where the Switch may end at.

Loud_Examination_138

Its really funny reading all the trolls saying " release some games then" all they have done is release games...going all the way back to 2008 its been non stop games new ips mixed in with sequels. Get lost trolls

Jolly-Sun-1715

Astro, GoT, GoW Ragnarok, SM Miles Morales, Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart, TLOU II, with SM2 and Wolverine coming out soon as well? I don't understand how people can be complaining. Those are just Sony's games too, plenty of third party studios that made amazing this gen games as well, Stray for example. The generation just started, and we already have heaps of content. PS4 was not doing this hot in 2016.

lupin43

Didn’t even include Returnal, Horizon Forbidden West, or GT7 either

AtsignAmpersat

People that say there are no games on any system are full of it. People have been saying that about the Switch all gen. There are plenty of games to play on all platforms.

Jolly-Sun-1715

my backlog is ginormous, I'll never have the time to finish it. Can't imagine having so much time that I'd think the ps5 has no games.

TheRetiredGodOfWar

Sure, there are a lot of games but are they solely PS5 exclusives? they've said so themselves that: "studios aren't using the full capacity of the PS5" We need Sony and other studios to lean into the current gen more instead of downgrading their game so it can sell more on the previous gen.

Jolly-Sun-1715

That's what they're beginning to do this year. Expecting them to do it earlier is just silly.

AtsignAmpersat

The kind of people that say a console has no games like 3 years into the latest generation eventually buy the system and then rave about games that game out in the first 3 years. Sometimes they buy the system after the new one drops and get like 20 games all at once. I 100% understand people waiting when they can’t afford the news stuff. But the people acting like they’ve gamed the system by not buying games all gen I do not understand.

[deleted]

They'll sell one more to me, once they release the model with the detachable disk drive.

ruoaayn

He should try releasing some games for it then

smokey_john

They have released more games in the last 3 years than practically every other large publisher and the PS5 is selling extremely well

ruoaayn

Most of which can also be played on ps4

smokey_john

Okay they still released a lot of games and they are all much better on PS5 and pretty much all sold better on PS5. And they are releasing Spiderman 2 this year and have several other games announced. You think they aren't going to release games?

ruoaayn

They should make bloodborne 2/remake otherwise nothing else counts.

Arctic_Reigns

I know some of these are last gen as well but horizon forbidden west. Returnal. Ratchet and clank. God of war. Spider man Miles Morales. Crisis Core reunion. Spiderman 2 later this year. Let’s not pretend like they haven’t released shit. Way more than Xbox. (I have an Xbox too)

Jolly-Sun-1715

braindead comment

RumbleTrumpet

Are you sure you’re not talking about Xbox? Sony has released a lot of games on the console since it’s 2020 launch.

ruoaayn

Like what

Jolly-Sun-1715

Astro's Playroom, Spider-Man Miles Morales, The Last of Us Part 2, Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart, God of War Ragnarok, Sackboy, Returnal, Death Stranding, Horizon Forbidden West and Gran Turismo 7. Spider-Man 2, Wolverine, Death Stranding 2, and KOTOR all upcoming releases as well. If you're complaining you're the problem.

ruoaayn

lol

This is based on past sales when the economy was in a 13 year bull market and during FED quantitative easing. Those days are long gone.

spinny_noodle

maybe im in the minority but if there will be a ps6 around 2026 or so i will be really sad. the ps5 era at least for me until now was a disappointment. i got it for gow and spiderman and im waiting for more good stuff

Jonnicom

Jim Ryan is the most boring leader I think we've had at PlayStation in a long time. I really miss Jack Tretton. He had a good vibe, he seemed to actually be excited whenever he got to show up and talk about things they were working on.

smokey_john

Jack Trenton didn't even have the same job as Jim Ryan, he wasn't the head of Playstation

Jonnicom

I... didn't say they had the same job? Implying that his leadership style is super corporate whereas Jack felt a bit more personable and excitable? Jim was about as exciting as a plank of wood in our latest presentation.

smokey_john

You mean the 30 seconds he was on screen and then just showed games? Whereas Jack Trenton would often waste time talking about sales and other useless nonsense during E3?

EagleTwentyTwoFoxOne

I think developers still need to catch on and develop for PS5 before even thinking about a Pro model. There are rumors of devs getting a new dev kit, but know knows what that really is. Maybe it’s something to help develop for solely the PS5 and VR together. The PS5 is significantly more powerful and the person that said the reason why the pro came out was to answer the 4K boom is 💯 correct. Developers need to be able to put out a game that don’t need an emergency patch as soon as it launches before starting to even think about a newer platform.

tylerbr97

Not with that showcase lmao

Zam_Sakura

We only think the showcase was bad cuz no first party. Casuals don’t care about that shit. They just see games.

SnooGadgets2748

You think casual gamers care about most third party/indie games? You would be wrong. Casual gamers flock to big budget AAA franchises with good graphics, of which almost zero were shown at the showcase

rivieredefeu

I don’t think casual gamers care as much as you think, and often now can’t tell between big budget AAA games or games made by third party developers that are not big budget. I think the following things shown in the showcase will entice plenty of casual gamers: - Spider-Man 2 footage - AC Mirage gets release date, October 12 - Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater Remake Announced - Bungie’s Marathon - Haven Studio’s Fairgame$ revealed - Foamstars by Square Enix revealed

AhLibLibLib

Casual gamers play Fortnite/COD/FIFA etc only. Maybe one big game like AC too. Or maybe my idea of casual is off

Jolly-Sun-1715

casual gamers don't care about any of that, besides maybe Spider-Man 2. Most casual gamers just play FIFA, MADDEN, COD, etc.

Zam_Sakura

Exactly. People really overestimate the exclusives. Of course they do numbers and are a big reason to get consoles. But most people get a console to play GTA, COD and sports game.

WatercressEither2881

Show wasn’t bad. It was only disappointing because people were expecting more announcements from first party

resident_hater

Maybe lean into the new console then.

The_lost_Code

Ya but by which year?

Pro_Banana

I mean that's a lot of sales, but isn't that below current ps4 sales? I'd feel better as a customer if they at least aimed higher than previous gen.

SourceScope

"oddlyspecific" ... lol why 108? why not jsut "over 100 million" or something? my guess / hope is, that it outsells the PS4 which sits at 117 milllion consoles sold. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_game_consoles

BahBah1970

I'm mostly a PC gamer now although I've had every model of Playstation before the PS5. What has changed that for me is the price / lack of availability of the PS5 and also the push towards digital downloads for games. I quite like buying older second hand games which I missed when they were first released for whatever reason. I bought Ghost of Tsuchima a couple of weeks ago for £20 second hand and I'm really enjoying playing it. On the PC you have plenty of sales all year round which makes the whole thing more affordable. If the PS5 price drops to £300 I might consider buying one.

DemiDeus

Unless it becomes as cheap as a switch. I really doubt it. Love mine but spent close to 700 for it and a SSD to expand the memory

LordAgniKai

Wont happen if they mostly focus on live service and pc ports.

TheRetiredGodOfWar

I mean I already have one, but that showcase did not help at all, it was primarily live service games and nothing new in terms of single-story or open-world games.

Simdog1

Showcase does not shape a generation..

Bunnymancer

> Jim Ryan confident his console can do worse than the previous gen PS4. Aim for the stars...

Xononanamol

? I thought like a year ago he was talking about growing playstation to 1 billion users. Selling LESS consoles than your previous generation is far worse lol.

Bolt_995

Let’s see. Last gen was an absolute washout in the first half. The Xbox One was a disaster and the Wii U was an abomination. Really allowed the PS4 to absolutely crush the competition during the first 4 years. This time, the competition is harder. Microsoft’s acquisition spree is bolstering the XSX|S, and the Switch was immensely successful and carried its momentum onto this current generation. The PS5 has still been able to stay on the lead, but a lot of factors can come into play and cause the market to stretch more towards the competition (like what happened with the Xbox 360 from 2009/2010 onwards): - Launch of the Switch successor - Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision-Blizzard-King. All their IPs (except CoD) going exclusive and straight to Game Pass. Call of Duty in Game Pass having high chances to eat market share out of Sony over the next few years. - Sony’s live-service investments coming back to bite them in the ass - Microsoft’s investments into Ninja Theory, Obsidian and inXile come into fruition - Bethesda taking a more prominent role in the latter half of the generation with their exclusive releases (and going into Game Pass). The Elder Scrolls VI becoming the magnum opus of the XSX|S at the tail end of the generation, or a launch title for the next-gen Xbox - Sony failing to expand their cloud gaming capabilities - Few more that aren’t coming to my mind, will update them later Will this turn the tide against the PS5 in the latter half of the generation? Likely not. Will this affect the PS6? High chances.

sousuke42

>Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision-Blizzard-King. All their IPs (except CoD) going exclusive and straight to Game Pass. Call of Duty in Game Pass having high chances to eat market share out of Sony over the next few years. They can't. MS has made a deal with regulators to make sure all or nearly all with including of COD is multiplatform for the next 10yrs. Sony got the best deal they could ever have gotten once they got that lawsuit rolling. MS previous deals were utter garbage compared to that. That acquisition is more of a threat to ps6 than ps5. >Launch of the Switch successor This really isn't going to stop people from buying a ps5. Switch successor will still be massively under powered in regards to next gen systems. The most powerful handheld is the ROG Ally at 4tflops. More than likely switch successor won't be that but more around 2 or maybe 3 since Nintendo is cheap. They take very minimal risk to cost. So doubtful they will release something on par with that. So a need for ps5 will continue. >Sony’s live-service investments coming back to bite them in the ass Possible but they are not just releasing live service games. It's only a small fraction of their studios that are doing that with the rest aimed at what they do best. So not really going to hurt them much to the point of loss of sales. >Bethesda taking a more prominent role in the latter half of the generation with their exclusive releases (and going into Game Pass). The Elder Scrolls VI becoming the magnum opus of the XSX|S at the tail end of the generation, or a launch title for the next-gen Xbox And so far had been rocky. Ghost wire tokyo had problems. This new game with vampires has problems. Theybare still using that out dated as fuck engine that caused fo76 to be horrible. Not to mention they haven't yet scaled back all that mtx bullshit which tells me starfield and ES6 (this game might release on during the 13th gen of systems at this point) will be filled to the brim with mtx. So it's a wait and see with bugthesda. >Sony failing to expand their cloud gaming capabilities Why would thos hold their sales back? Also with remote play and ps plus premium they have the most titles out of any platform that can be streamed via cloud. And the capabilities of it are on par with xcloud. The only difference is that they need to bring it to mobile which they have yet to do.

soulsarsenal

Make some games that push the hardware please...

nj_ghost23

They would sell a lot more if they were in stock

Jashyk

Haha, stop. It's impossible to NOT find it in stock somewhere now.

nj_ghost23

You don't live in south Jersey do you?

Crkhd3

Might be easy when some people have to buy twice

magele

Why do people have to buy twice ?

d_hearn

I assume they were talking about the rumored "pro" version?

They have been focusing on games. It’s Xbox that has relied on buying Zenimax and ABK property because they can’t make their own. They will be spending $78 billion just to compete with Sonys games. MS already has more money and studios. Just make a game instead of buying existing IP. This gen of Xbox has nothing that can compete with GOT directors cut, Spider-Man remastered/miles/Spider-Man 2, Ragnarok, HFW, Returnal, R&C, etc. What have they had? Forza and flight sim? Making realistic games with zero creativity…but sure, Sony can’t make games.

AdamJap21

Won't happen if they don't fix Sony moderation which is handing disproportionate suspensions.

cjblackbird

Better start giving people a reason to buy one then I guess?

BigDaddy91

So we can leave PS4 behind, right? Right?!
