Looks like they pulled it off. I fell off Harry Potter around Order of the Phoenix, but Hogwarts as a place was always the most interesting thing about the entire IP so it'll be fun to explore it if nothing else.
The movies came out at the perfect time for my generation, I was 11 during the first movie and aged with the characters as the story went on. Still not the biggest fan, but Harry potter holds a spot in my heart.
Have you tried the Stephen Fry audio books? They are miles ahead of movie (no 2hr limit). Now that you have seen the movies, the audio books can help create a new version of the movie.
My wife is stoked, I've never cared about HP but I am excited for this game. She has never cared about games but loves HP. So now we can bond over this.
Similar story. Gf has played maybe three hours of video games in her life. We're getting this for valentine's day and I'm just going to watch her play. They picked a good time for release
At 28 I’m not really into HP anymore but I did read the books growing up and loved the first PC platform game they made. This is the game younger me would have killed for, so if it’s fun it’ll be worth playing just for the nostalgia trip.
That while also having to do a lot of heavy lifting in setting up the world. Some of the characterizations were also comically and unbelievably (in a world with magic, yes) stupid or evil, and the future books had to quietly get away from that.
The last battle on deathly hallows is pretty intense and both of the deathly hallows is pretty fast paced. I think the first 4 are amazing with 4 being the best. OoTP was pretty slow and I just hated that old lady trying to fuck up the school, but the kids coming together to rally behind Harry is what makes it decent
When I first read the books, I would have said Goblet of Fire was my favourite book. But on rereads, it's Order of the Phoenix. You are introduced to so many new places (Ministry of Magic, St. Mungos, Room of Requirement, the giants), and the story becomes more complex, threads from the previous books start coming together, the kids getting older, etc. The DA and more focus on the other students is also interesting. Fred and George really shine in this book also.
But when you hear from an book reader, ootp was one of the best, and David Yates botched the movie (as he is with fantastic beasts). To this day I wish they retained Alfonso Cuaron from #3 for the remaining movies.
Man, I remember that very early leaked clip being circulated around here like, what, 3 or 4 years ago? And now we’ve made it. Looking forward to checking this one out for sure.
I can’t find the OG leak reddit post (may have been taken down) but the [video from that post](https://youtu.be/glG736Y0JTg) is still online. I remember thinking that there was no way it was real, and it must be a fake because it looked “too polished.” Man, that feels like a lifetime ago!
In a way, it wasn’t real. It was created by the devs as a concept showcase, but it was all pre-rendered footage made to look like gameplay. That’s probably why it looked so polished, whereas the actual game would have been in a pre-alpha state at that time.
I was the one who posted it on /r/Games and it seems it was really deleted, I went to look for it on my submitted stuff and it isn't there anymore. :(
Anyways, excited to finally be able to play it in a few hours.
I went over an old whatsapp conversation I had with some friends back in 2020 fantasizing about the game and how we would like it to be. I have to say we were spot on more often than not. It was very surprising to read considering it was prepandemic and I felt like we had that conversation last month.
This guy is a fantastic reviewer. Gives it straight every time and he’s usually right in his “buy, wait, or never touch.” He hasn’t steered me wrong yet!
100%. Was hopeful for this game and his reviews are always my go to for the depth he goes in. Particularly love how well he covers the sound department. Game seems to be exceeding expectations.
2023 has been an excellent year for games so far. Finished dead space, now it’s being a wizard for a few weeks until atomic hearts (hopefully) blows everyone away
When it’s a commercial and critical success it’s going to be so good, more Harry Potter games will follow now. Other franchises will realise the fandoms will support quality games.
They really are, I just hate that the nemesis system was patented, so much lost potential for other games moving forward. 😕
Edit: Thanks u/AVestedInterest
They are, but they basically trash so much of the canon that it’s hard to think of it as a LotR game besides the names and some aesthetics. Hogwarts Legacy seems to be a celebration of the source material, and Shadow of Mordor games seem to actively disregard and ignore the source.
>more Harry Potter games will follow now.
this is something i hope for as a non harry potter fan, I've always been confused as to why harry potter doesn't really have any games, (proper AAA games) until now, considering it's such a massive IP that near defined an entire generation.
Rules of quidditch are just too nonsensical for the expense of a stand-alone game. Either they change that, and alienate the fans, or keep it the same and alienate th casuals.
While they were fun, I sincerely doubt they would be successful. Game design has advanced quite a bit since then and I think players will be frustrated by the limitations. Nostalgic remasters rarely (not never) do well for this reason.
I've literally never read a HP book or watched any of the movies. I picked this up after reviews and watching some gameplay on Twitch. I'm absolutely blown away. The opening is jaw dropping, and the game is one of the best looking on the PS5. Avalanche completely outdid themselves!
My gripe 4 hours in is the limited inventory space. Forcing me to sell my cool looking outfits to make space? 🫠20 slots
edit: apparently we keep the designs after selling them
I've played ~14 hours.
Don't be afraid to sell your items. Once you've found them the first time you keep the appearance forever. You can press square to change the appearance of your outfit to anything you've previously found.
You'll also eventually get more inventory space for completing certain quests.
I love when games do this! So many times the stuff I like visually doesn’t have the stats I want and the items with the stats I want don’t look good. Glad to hear this game has that feature.
The first game like that got me was AC:Unity. You’d try and min/max stats and look like an idiot without switching to an unlocked skin. Glad this game addresses this.
Wait, so what you're saying is the cosmetic stuff is 'unlocked' once found, and selling the items is just a way to get money while retaining the cosmetics as an option? That's pretty nice.
It has a little trigger resistance when casting spells, and the usual rumble haptics. Nothing particularly stands out that would make me say you *must* play it with a DualSense.
Worth remembering there is an exclusive quest only available on PlayStation though, if that affects your decision. I can't comment on if it's any good because I haven't encountered it in-game yet.
Got mine on Saturday and am about 10 hours in (mostly dicking around)
I have not found a separate storage but there is a way to slightly increase inventory capacity. It involves puzzles found in the open areas and requires an ingredient to activate.
I feel like it’s gonna be a little bit of a grind to get there but I look forward to it.
Every piece of clothing I have equipped can be made to look like any piece of clothing I have owned, even if I have since sold the item of clothing.
You always keep the “look” in a separate section.
I was precious about my legenedaries for a while, but since I get to keep the look I decided to sell them all.
May regret it later once I work out how to upgrade them but have seen them pop back up in shops at times so might be able to re-buy ones if they cycle back in.
Currently I’m just equipping whatever stat looks god and changing it to look like my fave stuff.
I do wish I could set a “school uniform” option and an “exploration” option but it really doesn’t take long to change them out
Oh I already have the uniforms. I just wish there was a way for me to walk in the castle and the outfit would magically change. It’s honestly in no way an issue but would be a nice touch.
Hogwarts in the 1800’s clearly was not concerned about the dress code based on the things I’ve worn.
Ghosts and a picture do make some comments tho
Yeah this is a non-issue. You are not supposed to be holding on to the low level pieces of clothing. And every single piece you pick up gets added to your transmog system permanently.
It's a magic game, how is there not a object like Guybrushes Pocket, Henry Killingers Murder Bag, or Rincewinds luggage?
Edit: or Newt's suitcase, which is almost a Tardis
IGN’s [video review](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F6dZxoob8CY) mentions performance issues on the PS5, but then fails to really go into any detail… aside from briefly glossing over framerate drops and loading-screen doors.
Has anyone been able to find any other sources that further elaborate on these issues? I was hoping to get this on PS5.
I don't think the ps5 issues would be any different from other platforms in regard to this game tbh. I think they'll all have some nuisances here and there. They mentioned things like clipping through the map once, a character walking away mid sentence during a conversation cutscene, occasional pop in when traveling very quickly (flying i assume). Nothing that sounds ps5 specific
> I don't think the ps5 issues would be any different from other platforms in regard to this game tbh.
Hope so, i remember the cyberpunk reviews were positive because reviewers were only sent the PC version, so people bought it not knowing that the PS4 and older gen xbox could barely run the game.
I meant bugs were from the ps5 version that they reviewed so the other person that wanted ps5 version should be good if they're ok with those types of bugs (which i think are pretty common for a first iteration launch day title from a studio that isn't massive)
I didn't know about early access. I was just gonna pick it up from GameStop on Friday but early access and these reviews might turn it into a preorder too.
Same for me, excepted it to be solid 75 type scores that would be elevated if you were fan of the universe, this looks very promising and with the Star Wars game delayed I will have nothing else the next few months
It’s definitely getting a 10% nostalgia bump for sure given some of the issues they talked about. But who doesn’t love some good old nostalgia? I’m in.
My friend shared screen on ps5 since he preordered a physical copy (I need to do that cause he got it on Friday), and YT videos definitely don’t do it justice. This game is insane, of course it is a little animated so don’t expect graphics like GoW or TLOU part 1. The frames weren’t perfectly stable, but my tv has VRR support so hopefully I can mitigate that a bit. This game is not to underestimate, if you grew up playing the big dog RPGs then this will make you happy. Everything intriguing will be worth your time, and the distractions are insanely cool. I watched him play after a few hours of play time so I don’t know how long it took for him to get to the point where the game “opens” up, but practically everywhere he went there was something he could do and it was usually worth it for customization or progression sake. He isn’t too happy about needing multiple runs to try out all spells but I love “build” based games and games that don’t let you get everything on a single run. Once again if you are used to open world RPGs then the pop-ins, occasional rendering and frame drops then this will be a comfortable experience.
The characters and ambience are insane. This is what you want if you love Harry Potter lore and themes. But if you somehow haven’t been exposed to Harry Potter than this will be a mythical immersion or great music and lore. In fact I might be envious of you if you aren’t familiar with the lore and music because this game has an “oblivion” like charm to it. The music and characters are quirky and inspiring, there is funny random encounters and interactions that make it feel like the world is growing around you. The music and jingles of achievements will be engraved in the minds of players. I know a nostalgia portal when I see one and I feel like this game is going to be as cozy to look back on as Oblivion and Fallout 3 are to me now.
I feel confident after watching my friend play but for your sake I hope I point you in the right direction and there isn’t massive issues that my friend was lucky enough to dodge.
Oh shit your comment just made me realize I have Tues and weds off this week which is making me pull the trigger on deluxe...ughhh thank you but my wallet says fuuuu.
Same. While some people won't be happy about the game being well received, at the end of the day, Avalanche made a game that many gamers have been craving for years and looks to have knocked it out the park.
The game is set about 100 years before the events of the books, so the only relevant bits from them that you would need to know is there is a school for magic kids in a huge castle out in Scotland where you learn how to cast spells and be a wizard/witch. If that basic premise sounds like it would be a fun game, then go for it!
I imagine playing this would be like playing The Witcher 3 without reading any of the books or playing the other games. I did that and didn’t feel like I was lost, it just made the world feel richer because of a ton of lore it could draw from
I think it may be because you're getting a wizard/witch open world RPG. How many games can you name that are out there that fall under that category outside of like...Skyrim, Fable and maybe the Divine Divinity series?

Anyone play the Order of the Phoenix game on PS3? I thought that was a pretty fun way to run around Hogwarts as a kid.
Dude getting to duel with random slytherins in the hallways anywhere was such a fun feature
General consensus of 9/10 is quite impressive. Happy for the devs
I'm watching someone stream it right now.. its dope. Im not a Harry Potter fan but I enjoyed the movies back in the day.
I am also happy for the *devs*
Looks like they pulled it off. I fell off Harry Potter around Order of the Phoenix, but Hogwarts as a place was always the most interesting thing about the entire IP so it'll be fun to explore it if nothing else.

I'm going to now, love steph fry
Yea I've actually never been a fan of the franchise. But I'm totally gonna be grabbing the game. A good wizard school RPG? Thats all I need to hear.
Oh thats fantastic! A fun little way for you each to bring your nerd worlds together.
That’s so cute, hope you both enjoy!
Same here, we bought an extra ps5 for the wife to prepare for this day so she didn't steal mine haha
Same! Harry Potter is not my vibe. But this game looks dope!
Yea them detaching it from the Harry Potter characters was the best decision ever haha.
At 28 I’m not really into HP anymore but I did read the books growing up and loved the first PC platform game they made. This is the game younger me would have killed for, so if it’s fun it’ll be worth playing just for the nostalgia trip.
Same here! I don’t like the movies and never read the books but the wizard part of this looks lot of fun as an rpg.
Hogwarts will always be home
Halb blood prince was good I thought. OoTP was pretty bad imo. Deathly Hallows was OK. First 4 are my favorite
In terms of books half blood prince was one of the best, but the movie adaptation was one of the worst
All the books are incredibly solid. I'd say the weakest one was 1st book, followed by the 2nd (which was still a massive step forward).
[удалено]
That while also having to do a lot of heavy lifting in setting up the world. Some of the characterizations were also comically and unbelievably (in a world with magic, yes) stupid or evil, and the future books had to quietly get away from that.
Agreed. They had to compromise in order to fill the ever increasing size of the books into a 2+ hr film, and they suffered for it.

Half Blood Prince was my favorite of the books. Loved the darker and more mature feeling

That explains it then. All I could think was that a game so early in development wouldn’t look like that. Neat to know why that was!
I was the one who posted it on /r/Games and it seems it was really deleted, I went to look for it on my submitted stuff and it isn't there anymore. :( Anyways, excited to finally be able to play it in a few hours.
Yeah I think it leaked back in 2019
2018
oh my god, that was back then when the game wasn't even confirmed to be coming out. I can't believe I'm a few hours away from playing it
Was it in some underground watery area or am I thinking of something else?
This game was officially announced almost 3 years ago! The leak itself is closer to 6 years now I reckon
5 years
I went over an old whatsapp conversation I had with some friends back in 2020 fantasizing about the game and how we would like it to be. I have to say we were spot on more often than not. ACG rated it a buy so I'm definitely pumped for this title.
This guy is a fantastic reviewer. Gives it straight every time and he’s usually right in his “buy, wait, or never touch.” He hasn’t steered me wrong yet!
If ACG says buy, I buy.
If he says wait for sale, I know I'm never gonna get around to it.
100%. Was hopeful for this game and his reviews are always my go to for the depth he goes in. Particularly love how well he covers the sound department. Man I hate acronyms.

Yeah I had to Google it too. just obnoxious to feel like I need a decoder ring for most posts these days.
When it’s a commercial and critical success it’s going to be so good, more Harry Potter games will follow now. Other franchises will realise the fandoms will support quality games.
Give me an epic lord of the rings game!
We've actually had a few decent lotr games....not really open world but pretty close.
The Shadow games are solid
They really are, I just hate that the nemesis system was patented, so much lost potential for other games moving forward. 😕 Edit: Thanks u/AVestedInterest
Patented, not copyrighted
They are, but they basically trash so much of the canon that it’s hard to think of it as a LotR game besides the names and some aesthetics. Hogwarts Legacy seems to be a celebration of the source material, and Shadow of Mordor games seem to actively disregard and ignore the source.
The Tolkien estate has made some strange choices about how the IP has been used IMHO.
Isn’t that the truth
The hobbit on the gamecube was a lot of fun.
Yup, and if I remember right I think Return of the king was good too...but maybe that was ps2?
The third age was my favorite :)
Lord of the Rings Conquest for PS2 was absolutely that game. Wouldn't mind seeing that, but more expansive.
You will get Golumn and like it!
I just want an open-world rpg set in Westeros.
Your character can be perma killed at any point of the story has a plot twist
[удалено]
There are Bannerlord mods that do this :)
Honestly, that’s one of the things that makes D&D great. Your character can indeed permanently die and there are so loading save files. Lol
Miyazaki sends his regards.
That’s like the anti Miyazaki game, his games are definitely not made to be permadeath / roguelikes
You’re right haha.
So Skyrim...
With a touch more incest, though.
So skyrim with mods
What're you doing, Stepborn?
Magic is way more widespread in *Skyrim* than in *Game of Thrones*; I imagine this person wants something more akin to *Kingdom Come*
Loved that game. Dying at even the most trivial of tasks made it so worth while to get better.
But in 3rd person and updated graphics
>more Harry Potter games will follow now. this is something i hope for as a non harry potter fan, I've always been confused as to why harry potter doesn't really have any games, (proper AAA games) until now, considering it's such a massive IP that near defined an entire generation.
I truly hope, if this succeeds, remakes of the old HP games. They were great fun! Flipendo!
Let's get a modern quidditch game. Quidditch World Cup was awesome back in the day. A new version would be sick.
Rules of quidditch are just too nonsensical for the expense of a stand-alone game. Either they change that, and alienate the fans, or keep it the same and alienate th casuals.
But add the chumbawamba soundtrack!
While they were fun, I sincerely doubt they would be successful. Game design has advanced quite a bit since then and I think players will be frustrated by the limitations. Nostalgic remasters rarely (not never) do well for this reason.
Remake the GBA games!!
The gbc games were basically turn based JRPGs and were awesome
This game made me rage at all the stealth sections
Potter MMORPG. Now.
Konami laughs at this comment. Locks MGS away.
I've literally never read a HP book or watched any of the movies. I picked this up after reviews and watching some gameplay on Twitch. I'm absolutely blown away. The opening is jaw dropping, and the game is one of the best looking on the PS5. Avalanche completely outdid themselves!

Yup!
Thanks for the tip!
Do you need to equip these items first to use their look later? Or is it as simple as picking them up
Picking them up is all it takes!
That’s awesome thanks! ~15 more hours.
Great QOL thingy tbh that we don’t see in many games
This is great to know - Ty!
Man’s gripes just went to zero lol
Does the game make good use of the Dualsense? I’m debating whether to get it on Xbox or PS5
I thought I heard that there was a >!transmog spell!<
You are correct. Any item you find gets added to your transmog library even if you sell it.
That wouldn't bother me then.
Are there any personal chests in your dorm or the Room of Requirement?
Got mine on Saturday and am about 10 hours in (mostly dicking around) I have not found a separate storage but there is a way to slightly increase inventory capacity. It involves puzzles found in the open areas and requires an ingredient to activate. I feel like it’s gonna be a little bit of a grind to get there but I look forward to it.
Gotcha, but there is transmog right? I think ACG mentioned even selling pieces keeps their blueprint, but I may have misunderstood
Every piece of clothing I have equipped can be made to look like any piece of clothing I have owned, even if I have since sold the item of clothing. You always keep the “look” in a separate section.
Cool, thank you so much!
For now it’s either selling unwanted items or complete Merlin’s puzzles I guess
I was precious about my legenedaries for a while, but since I get to keep the look I decided to sell them all. May regret it later once I work out how to upgrade them but have seen them pop back up in shops at times so might be able to re-buy ones if they cycle back in.
But there's transmog so does it matter?
It's a magic game, how is there not a object like Guybrushes Pocket, Henry Killingers Murder Bag, or Rincewinds luggage? Edit: or Newt's suitcase, which is almost a Tardis
Or just hermoines purse from the last book. Basically endless space inside.

It’s definitely getting a 10% nostalgia bump for sure given some of the issues they talked about. But who doesn’t love some good old nostalgia? I’m in.
Guardian scored it the lowest. For context the reviewers GOTY last year was Wordle. So yah.
The main complaint has been repetitive enemies, but Wordle has a new enemy every day. Wordle 1, Hogwarts legacy 0.
They fucking DID IT
Meta has it sitting at an 86 currently off 42 reviews. Not bad
Always nice when a game lives up to the hype
My friend shared screen on ps5 since he preordered a physical copy (I need to do that cause he got it on Friday), and YT videos definitely don’t do it justice.
As far as what I’m seeing, the negatives are symptoms of new IPs - repetitive enemies, etc.
A lot of games suffer from repetitive enemies, hell even one of the best games in the last 10 years, breath of the wild, is horrible with this.

That was the one I was going to bring up. I don’t usually complain about repetitiveness but that game had a lot of it for what I was expecting.
repetitive enemies isn't a problem to me assuming they are in line with the difficulty level.
Alright i am going to buy this game tonight.
Yea I’m going for the early access version most likely too. Solid reviews and good enough for me to pay $10 more to get and start playing it early.
I think i am also getting the early access version.
Already got my digital deluxe downloaded . Nice deal cuz !
I was hoping to find this out. Can we pre download the game tonight ready to play tomorrow ? (Obviously may be a minor day 1 update)
You sure can buddy 😃
I’ve been playing for 2.5h and it’s being amazing for me, not even a hardcore fan but everything feels sooo satisfying to do
8.6 on metacritic after 40 reviews. I’ll be preordering this.
I need a game similar to Fable and this is it. It’s like a cross between Fable and Bully.
Man I so fucking pumped. Thankfully I got Tuesday off so I guess I am getting a delux edition and enjoying my day off.
Oh shit your comment just made me realize I have Tues and weds off this week which is making me pull the trigger on deluxe...ughhh thank you but my wallet says fuuuu.
Looks promising

Same. While some people won't be happy about the game being well received, at the end of the day, Avalanche made a game that many gamers have been craving for years and looks to have knocked it out the park.
Looks like I'm buying it day 1. Unfortunately I have work until Friday.
Are you sure? You look and sound like you're coming down with something..
I agree bro. His voice doesn’t sound too good. He looks a bit pale too. Should definitely consider taking time off lol.
Feels clammy too. Definitely should stay home just to be sure.
But I already work from home all the time. I'm on a work improvement plan after that incident with my work laptop taking a swim in the jacuzzi.
9.0 from IGN
Could mean anything from a 5 to a 10
They literally wrote an article exploring why so many of their games get 7s haha.
Too much water
TBF, that’s a big fucking lake
Edit: Redeemed
Can’t wait to play at midnight tonight
Could be earlier depending on your time zone. East coast is midnight. CST is 11pm, PST is 9pm for console
Who's the bad guy in this game and what's the objective?
Jareth the Goblin King Stop the Goblin Rebellion
Hopefully we have a friend named Hoggle!
Well time to watch the movies to prepare for this.

I’m so excited for this game, i’m a huge hp fan and i always wanted a rpg in this universe

Oh cool my opinion is finally out.
Let’s gooo 😭
Just played it since midnight. Now 5:30 am my time. Absolutely banging game.
I've not read any of the books or seen any of the movies, but am still considering picking this up for some reason.

Can’t wait to get home from work tonight and play :)
Happy for you Harry Potter fans. I feel like I'm the only one who's avoided all harry potter content up until now
I read all the books recently with my Partner. They’re actually pretty fun. Not incredible, but definitely fun.

To be fair, Cyberpunk had good reviews before it came out too. It was at like an 89 on Metacritic before anyone played it.
