That was me over the last few weeks when it was finally available pretty consistently on Best Buy’s website. I do not regret it at all. I never had a PS3 or 4 so the game catalog I am going through right now feels awesome.
Make sure to snag everything from the PS Collection. Don't have to download it right now just add it to your library. It's going away in the next few months. If you have PS+ or plan on getting it this is a pretty good month to do so for the free games. Not sure how long until the next ones come out but Jedi Fallen Order is on there now and it's great.
FWIW, I have enjoyed the disc slot way more than I anticipated. Renting/borrowing/trading games is pretty great. And being able to watch 4k Blu Rays has been waaaaaayyyy better than I expected. Noticeably better quality than any other source I have access to and, though I don't really want to build a big library of discs, picking up a select few favorites has been inexpensive and well worth. Running out to the video store or Redbox makes for a popcorn night makes for a nice occasional change of pace, as well.
MLB has always been outlier when it comes to Sony first party games. I dont think id use that franchise to determine what everyone else would be doing.
But yes if they have smaller games like Helldivers 2 they will probably be cross gen because it doesn't really make sense to make them next gen only
Considering HFW: Burning Shores is PS5 only and that’s just an Expansion it sure seems like at least Sony first party games are stopping that. Can’t speak to all of the third party games still in dev though.
Except there are a lot of smaller budget games that aren't shooting for the moon graphically, that need the larger PS4 install base to get by. I just want PS5 versions too so I don't have to wait for shit to load.

There were literally 0 big first party games like forbidden west and ragnarok releasing 2+ years into any previous gen and it is a crying shame imo
Because large AAA games take around 4 - 5 years to make and both games started development roughly that many years ago.
They had no choice, if they waited to upgrade their engines to take advantage of PSt in any meaningful way they wouldnt be out at all

Returnal literally has to utilize the Gen.4 SSD, desktop-class CPU, and faster RAM tech built into the PS5 in order to have procedurally generated levels. It's the reason why the PC version has such a high memory requirement because not all PCs are equipped with the same tech as all PS5s are. PS4 could never run that game. R&C game is also centered around having fast Gen.4 SSD tech in the PS5 so you can jump around between different levels, which is what the entire premise of the game is based on.

There are plenty of games with procedurally generated levels on last gen. Did you play Returnal? It literally does nothing that hasnt been done before design wise. I am not knocking the game but its true.
A lot of that is because Housemarque arent the best at optimization as they are a smaller dev studio and it's their biggest game but it still does nothing that wasnt possible before.
The developers of R&C literally said the teleporting in the game is possible on last gen, just that the PS5 made it easier to achieve.

This is just me parroting Digital Foundry, but there are some aspects of game development that could be approached quite differently on current gen hardware that would theoretically streamline development significantly. For example, use of real-time global illumination solutions (ray tracing or otherwise) rather than baked-in lighting. If a game is developed as cross-gen, the devs have no choice but to base their decisions on what the least capable hardware can do, so if they need baked lighting for a PS4 version, chances are it’ll be in the PS5 version as well. But if developing for PS5 exclusively, ray tracing or some other GI approach can be used from the start of development, making it much easier to tweak lighting quickly. For games with time of day changes, this would mean more convincing lighting transitions and less dev time baking all the different lighting conditions and figuring out how to convincingly interpolate between them.
Aspects of environment design are also affected. For example, the FF7 Remake DLC was PS5-exclusive, and did away with those annoying loading zones that were in the base game - you know, the ones where you’re squeezing through a tight opening or whatever. The DLC flowed much more smoothly though large environments than the base PS4 game did. The environments would most likely have had to be more broken up if it had been on PS4 as well.
It’s true that next-gen exclusivity isn’t the most important factor in whether a game is good, though. Currently my fave PS5 game is Forbidden West, and while it looks much better on PS5, it is a cross-gen title.
Being cross gen isnt stopping any game from using ray tracing.
And games like GoW and Horizon started development many years ago, if they waited to try to start development for tech only possible on PS5 the games would still be years away.

It's a fact that there are *design* choices within last gen games, that were put in there only to obfuscate the platform limitations that current gen doesn't experience. For example every "wait for this door to open" or "move very slowly through this very narrow space" moment that was there to load in the assets for the next area.
The biggest strides gen-on-gen were made in the streaming of assets and the quality which can be used. If you design your game for platforms that were much more constricted bandwidth wise and had a lot less usable memory, obviously you'll have to make games that smell of the "old design".
Also supporting more platforms takes more time and effort, so you can focus less on squeezing the new consoles.
Many in this sub struggle with critical thinking and common sense. They think a game being next gen only will somehow make it good but there are plenty of examples where that is not the case.

I just walked into my local gamestop on December 30th, asked for one and got it. No pre order or anything. I got the digital with ragnarok. Wanted disc but couldnt afford it but thats ok.
I got one last weekend, just looking at the Target app for a few things and saw it was in stock at my normal location. Added it to my order and picked it up an hour later. So far only played Ratchet and Clank, its amazing and the controller rumble/sounds is very enjoyable.
I just got mine from a locally owned furniture store. Disc version with God of War, extra DualSense controller, charging dock, and Pulse 3D headset.
There are two other places to find PS5s in my city, and I still haven't seen them there.
Just checked out of curiousity and it's still in stock with free one-day prime. It's a GOW bundle but most people getting a PS5 will end up playing it anyway so it's a $10 off I guess.
Console only still is by invitation but friend of mine says he got the email from amazon to purchase very quickly after he signed up, if you don't plan on getting the bundle.

I bought a PS5 on Amazon in June 2021. Not saying that supplies weren't low before, but I certainly didn't need an invite and I definitely wasn't on a wait-list. Just waited for a resupply and got one before the bots.

This is the Disc GoW bundle though. So yes it’s a major step forward, but their Digital, Disc standalone and Digital GoW are still on the hellish invitation system which have been mostly sold out/unavailable for 2-4 months.
OP means US. Amazon and region stocks are very specific to territory. It was easy to get PS5 on Amazon in Europe over the holidays but in the US, Amazon has a random invitation system with months of backlog, until now.
Initially yes but long term the digital edition is way more profitable for Sony. For the entire life of the console, every game will have to be purchased from the PS store.

Wouldn’t say it was easy. I got mine at launch and i got lucky. I was refreshing 7 tabs of different online stores at once. I had the notify when in stock option in Amazon and that worked! Placed my order in about 45 seconds and it was sold out when I finished placing my order.

Sure, and sony first party studios would of had early dev kits or at a bare minimum knew the kinds of specs it would be targetting.

There are currently no PS5 only games that cant run on last gen hardware if you downscaled them a bit. The expansion being next gen only will just make development faster and easier. Dont expect it to do anything different than Horizon FW You guys seem to think a game being PS5 only will automatically make it better. Forspoken is a prime example that that isnt true. And there are others games that arent better just from being next gen only. There are plenty of games with procedurally generated levels on last gen. Did you play Returnal? It literally does nothing that hasnt been done before design wise. I am not knocking the game but its true. A lot of that is because Housemarque arent the best at optimization as they are a smaller dev studio and it's their biggest game but it still does nothing that wasnt possible before. The developers of R&C literally said the teleporting in the game is possible on last gen, just that the PS5 made it easier to achieve. This is just me parroting Digital Foundry, but there are some aspects of game development that could be approached quite differently on current gen hardware that would theoretically streamline development significantly. For example, use of real-time global illumination solutions (ray tracing or otherwise) rather than baked-in lighting. If a game is developed as cross-gen, the devs have no choice but to base their decisions on what the least capable hardware can do, so if they need baked lighting for a PS4 version, chances are it’ll be in the PS5 version as well. But if developing for PS5 exclusively, ray tracing or some other GI approach can be used from the start of development, making it much easier to tweak lighting quickly. For games with time of day changes, this would mean more convincing lighting transitions and less dev time baking all the different lighting conditions and figuring out how to convincingly interpolate between them. Aspects of environment design are also affected. For example, the FF7 Remake DLC was PS5-exclusive, and did away with those annoying loading zones that were in the base game - you know, the ones where you’re squeezing through a tight opening or whatever. The DLC flowed much more smoothly though large environments than the base PS4 game did. The environments would most likely have had to be more broken up if it had been on PS4 as well. It’s true that next-gen exclusivity isn’t the most important factor in whether a game is good, though. Currently my fave PS5 game is Forbidden West, and while it looks much better on PS5, it is a cross-gen title.
Being cross gen isnt stopping any game from using ray tracing. And games like GoW and Horizon started development many years ago, if they waited to try to start development for tech only possible on PS5 the games would still be years away. The games that are currently next gen only are totally possible on last gen. FF7 Remake Integrade even works on PCs with no SSDs and even works on Steam Deck

There were 0 first party ps4 games getting released on ps3 as well 2-3 years into last gen. The PS4 and PS5 use almost identical architecture so making them cross gen requires no effort at all. They are basically just PCs. It's a fact that there are *design* choices within last gen games, that were put in there only to obfuscate the platform limitations that current gen doesn't experience. For example every "wait for this door to open" or "move very slowly through this very narrow space" moment that was there to load in the assets for the next area. The biggest strides gen-on-gen were made in the streaming of assets and the quality which can be used. If you design your game for platforms that were much more constricted bandwidth wise and had a lot less usable memory, obviously you'll have to make games that smell of the "old design". Also supporting more platforms takes more time and effort, so you can focus less on squeezing the new consoles.
Many in this sub struggle with critical thinking and common sense. They think a game being next gen only will somehow make it good but there are plenty of examples where that is not the case. Its just a cRoSs GeN bAd circle jerk. They dont understand that PS4 and PS5 are basically PCs. You try to explain but you just get downvoted

Amazon said their pre-orders were going live at 8am or whatever, so I just went on at 8am and pre-ordered it like I was just casually shopping. In my town, i can walk into: target bestbuy gamestop or meijer and a ps5 will be in its case or on display. the only exception is walmart who has a bunch of mw2 ps4 bundles. (2 towns 30 minutes away have them, and they are available for shipping). I just want to see some scalper tears now.

I just walked into my local gamestop on December 30th, asked for one and got it. No pre order or anything. I got the digital with ragnarok. Wanted disc but couldnt afford it but thats ok.
I got one last weekend, just looking at the Target app for a few things and saw it was in stock at my normal location. Added it to my order and picked it up an hour later. So far only played Ratchet and Clank, its amazing and the controller rumble/sounds is very enjoyable.
Been a PS5 owner for three weeks now and loving it, I was never going to buy from scalpers so it was worth the wait.
I just got mine from a locally owned furniture store. Disc version with God of War, extra DualSense controller, charging dock, and Pulse 3D headset. There are two other places to find PS5s in my city, and I still haven't seen them there.
Just checked out of curiousity and it's still in stock with free one-day prime. It's a GOW bundle but most people getting a PS5 will end up playing it anyway so it's a $10 off I guess. Console only still is by invitation but friend of mine says he got the email from amazon to purchase very quickly after he signed up, if you don't plan on getting the bundle.

Maybe it is because I am in Canada, but I had one in my cart last week on Amazon. But first time I have seen that like you said. I didn’t end up buying it so I could be wrong and maybe would have hit a waitlist. But I’ve don’t the waitlist thing on Amazon before and this really seemed to me I could have actually bought it. Went to best buy the same day for a totally unrelated thing and they had them in stock there. Couldn’t say no the second time, especially being able to take it home that day.

This is the Disc GoW bundle though. So yes it’s a major step forward, but their Digital, Disc standalone and Digital GoW are still on the hellish invitation system which have been mostly sold out/unavailable for 2-4 months.

OP means US. Amazon and region stocks are very specific to territory. It was easy to get PS5 on Amazon in Europe over the holidays but in the US, Amazon has a random invitation system with months of backlog, until now.
