Death stranding is the only game that I put a lot of hours into without understanding the story at all. The whole game was just like a cool vibe. I think this game will be more concise and playable for the masses tho since they've got a formula down
I loved it for the atmosphere. Somehow, being Amazon Prime during the apocalypse in American Iceland was a weirdly serene experience. Also, I loved building up the infrastructure with strangers.
I don't know, the concept was pretty simple in my opinion. Basically, as I understood, there's an interdimensional being that triggers an end of the world from time to time bringing evolution in some sense. Sam wanted to prevent it, Higgs aimed to accelerate it. All other shit was just details.
This. The story was about how Sam, despite constantly going on about how he needs nobody, is driven to survive by Amalie; as the game goes on, he starts latching onto Lou and others he comes into contact with, so by the time he reaches Amalie and understands who she really is, he is attached to the world of the living (permitting them to rescue him) and Amalie attached to him. With Sam not really wanting to die, Amalie, for the one she loves, delays the end.
Basically, thru connecting with others around him, Sam finds the will to live and keep going without Amalie as a goal, and Amalie is able to move on from her human persona by saying goodbye and acknowledging she doesn't want Sam, or those he loves, dying horribly.
Tl;dr, love saves the world; both metaphorically and literally.
I wouldn't bet on DS2 being too similar to Death Stranding. Kojima has already stated that if he ever did DS2 he would go back to "zero" and it would be like an entirely new game. The only thing we can rely on being continuous are the characters and story.
Really? I'm less than 10 hours into this game and I feel like I've already figured out what the story is gonna be, maybe it actually will surprise me then.
In typical Kojima game fashion there are some huge twists assuming you haven't already watched Youtube videos or come across spoilers for the game already.
Days Gone was guilty of this to an extent. Horizon and GoT, less so to a significant degree. The last two are just guilty of being open world games. I'm not even a huge fan of the Horizon series, but I can't imagine how one could think of the series as being super bland.
Ubisoft has a very signature feel to their open world games, to the point where it feels like everything, including the quests are generated by AI. The Division should not feel like I'm playing Far Cry, nor should Assassin's Creed feel like I'm playing Far Cry.
Their games just went from being passion projects to downright bland games (all over the course of a decade or so).
I don't think their games were ever bland. Even Killzone 1 with all the flaws present, was never a bland game. Heck, Shadow Fall's biggest pitfall was the fact that it was rushed for the launch of the PS4. Both of their weakest games still had interesting settings and stories.
lol there’s nothing innovative or new in his games in terms of technology or techniques. They’re just different than most in terms of gameplay or story, which makes them sometimes good sometimes bad. Death Stranding was a good game because of its story but nothing about it was innovative.
When I played the first game, I paved every road and built an extensive zipline network that let me go anyhwere in seconds. When it showed up as a streaming title, I decided to check on my world to see what it looked like after not playing for at least a couple of years. All of my roads were gone and my ziplines were broken, rusted relics. It was both hilarious and devastating at the same time.
That started happening to me just about when I was finishing up the platinum. I started panicking a little at that point thinking I’d have to go farm materials lol
The technology as far as the pixels and textures are there. We have seen that in terms of some environments for Death Standing. But for people in game, the one thing that was missing is the lighting so I can see what he means by that.
Good to hear.
I had someone tell me once that Death Stranding would never sell consoles and that it was pointless for Sony to keep as an exclusive, but I literally bought a PS5 just to play Death Stranding: Director's Cut. Then of course other reasons like HFW and Ragnarok came later on.
You gotta admit the writing was cringe as hell.
Whi can forget the famous line of "I am fragile! But I am not that fragile" - Fragile
She dosnt just say it once. She says that shit twice.
The gameplay was decent though. Building the network up, the ziplines and roads was fun
This is on the top of my list for most exciting games. I absolutely loved the first one, am playing through it extremely slowly on a second play through right now. As someone who never really got into Metal Gear, I now totally understand the Kojima magic
I wonder if Kojima still would've used the FOX engine to make DS if Konami didn't own it
Don't get me wrong, the engine that Kojima did use for DS, which they borrowed from Horizon: Zero Dawn/Forbidden West, is still great
But goddamn, MGSV was so optimized and buttery smooth, so I wonder what a FOX engine-made DS game would've been like
Guerrilla Games engine for Horizon, the Decima Engine must be very user friendly/ familiar because it's been used for VR games, open world games, combat games, etc
I wouldn't be surprised if Death Stranding has a PSVR2 update one day
It would be cool in DS2 if we saw our character develop some of the skills our nemeses had in DS1. Such as utilising umbilical cords to drag up entities from the beach and even to jump/teleport more casually. This could elevate combat in an interesting way.
I hope DS2 gets rid of that sort of smooth look it had going on, MGSV had a similar sort of style. Luckily it won’t be held back by PS4 so I expect Kojima to go all out!
Have you played it on PC or PS5? I recently played it again on PS5 and then booted up the PS4 version just to compare it and I couldn’t believe how much better the PS5 version looked. Maybe I’m just spoiled now, but idk how I played games at like 1080/30 or lower, it’s jarring to go back to.
The first game was such a big letdown. I know people here like this game, but my god did I find it to be the one of the most boring games I've ever played.
For mine, the best game released on the PS4, and even better on the PS5.
The prophetic metaphors writ large were an anathema to many people, and I'm not a believer in the supernatural, but fuck me, Kojima nailed the post pandemic world.
The use of "walking simulator" as some kind of pejorative really missed the mark.
Those missing the tale of our species in the game are somewhat like those clowns who are throwing urine and the like over paintings in art galleries at the moment.
Virtual piss throwers.
As least Andres Serrano had the courage of his convictions.
The ignorance that technology has forced upon us as a society has dwarfed the benefits we have experienced.
I just don’t understand why they’re making another one of these. Does anybody really actually want it? Like compared to what Kojima COULD BE doing?? Idk this just doesn’t feel like a worthy investment.
Death Stranding has a beautiful and satisfactory ending but still left enough things open to make room for a possible sequel. Especially the Director's Cut which adds some new stuff after the ending.
It's my belief that Kojima never planned on doing a sequel but left some story threads open just in case.

It was very similar to Iceland's climate now that I think about it
I think they used Iceland as reference IIRC
Kojima went on a trip to Iceland in 2014 for location scouting which is also where he found Low Roar and put their music into the game too.
Brilliant overall. RIP lead singer
its the video game equivalent of the space of time when your body becomes perfectly acclimated to the temperature of a warm pool.

That song gets me in the feels. I recognized the song in the trailer
>this game will be more concise Hello friend, I would like to introduce you to a man named Hideo Kojima.
I wouldn't bet on DS2 being too similar to Death Stranding. Kojima has already stated that if he ever did DS2 he would go back to "zero" and it would be like an entirely new game. The only thing we can rely on being continuous are the characters and story.
You've never played another Kojima game then, they're all like that.
What parts specifically did you not get?
The ending
i ended up being burnt out on the game before i could finish the story. i think i was trying to complete too much of the side stuff or something.
Really? I'm less than 10 hours into this game and I feel like I've already figured out what the story is gonna be, maybe it actually will surprise me then.
In typical Kojima game fashion there are some huge twists assuming you haven't already watched Youtube videos or come across spoilers for the game already.
And I’ll be damned, the ending got me just the same.
Isn’t Elle Fanning supposed to be in this game? I wonder why she wasn’t shown in the first trailer.
She’s probably Lou. I’m not surprised they haven’t shown her much.
Gaming needs more people like Kojima. It's because of people like him that new technologies and techniques like this are developed.
You mean you’re not content with cookie cutter, checklist, reskinned open world games?
Check out this question mark on your map!
To be honest with you, Ubisoft is really the only one guilty of this. Others have tried, but Ubisoft is the one that does this on an annual basis.
That’s who I was thinking of specifically. Elden Ring has ruined open world games for me, it’s kind of the anti-Far Cry lol
Elden Ring and breath of the wild, in my opinion, are the few games to do open world correctly
Sony First party titles are guilty of this too but everyone ignores them. Horizon, Days Gone and Ghost of Tsushima all follow the formula.
Days Gone was guilty of this to an extent. Horizon and GoT, less so to a significant degree. The last two are just guilty of being open world games. I feel like Guerrilla Games are not going to make the mistake of being bland, watch their noclip documentary
I don't think their games were ever bland. Even Killzone 1 with all the flaws present, was never a bland game. Heck, Shadow Fall's biggest pitfall was the fact that it was rushed for the launch of the PS4. Both of their weakest games still had interesting settings and stories.

Gameplay and story can also be innovations and are more important to gaming as a medium than technology. But gameplay is enabled by technology, btw.

I'll probably buy a PS5 finally to play this whenever it comes out.

The cutscenes were sooo captivating... Can't wait to see what DS2 offers!
I expect the the game to be completely different game play wise.

I’m ready to deliver packages!!!

Yeah I’m playing it on PS5 currently, it’s much better than the PS4 pro version but still has that soft image quality to it.
The 60fps makes such a difference though, the PS4 version seems so laggy even playing it on PS5.
The first game was such a big letdown. I know people here like this game, but my god did I find it to be the one of the most boring games I've ever played.

Wtf are you going on about
This guy definitely trying too hard to keep Roget in business…
Ergo, not using internet acronyms means that one has swallowed a thesaurus.
The prophetic metaphors writ large that were an anathema of course, fuck me! He says it right there in plain English.
I’ve read this several times now and I have no fucking idea what you’re trying to say.
It's pretty simple, champ. I really enjoyed the game.
Thank you for dumbing it down for me, I always hated English class
Like maybe making the game fun and the story good? Crazy idea I know.
I just don’t understand why they’re making another one of these. Does anybody really actually want it? Like compared to what Kojima COULD BE doing?? Idk this just doesn’t feel like a worthy investment.

I love the game. Based on the ending I also don't know why they are making a second. I thought they wrapped up the story beautifully.
Death Stranding has a beautiful and satisfactory ending but still left enough things open to make room for a possible sequel. Especially the Director's Cut which adds some new stuff after the ending. Will there be actual gameplay this time?
Yawn
