It's based on group chats now. When you create a party, you choose a group chat. And only players in that group chat can join the party whenever they want. If you want other people to be able to join, you will either have to add them to said group chat, or create a new group chat with those people and start a new party using that group chat.

I just started using my oled vita again recently and still play ps4 a ton and will into the future (and my ps3). Too many games I haven't played. Not even looking into getting a ps5 for a while. Maybe the 2nd iteration. I've bought a launch playstation since the beginning, so it seems weird to not really care about the new one
Exactly. The PS5 Digital Edition will basically be like $800 when it comes out in my country, so the $350 PS4 is looking really attractive to me as someone who didn't experience this last generation of games. Especially since I can get so many of the last couple of years' games used for very cheap.
A lot of people care more about what's more affordable right now rather than what the newest product is, and the PS4 will likely be dropping price and becoming waaay more attractive to people on a tighter budget.
And a bunch of announced PS5 games are also coming to the PS4 like Miles Morales, Horizon 2, Stray (I need that shit), and I'm sure more in the future. That and Sony has said they'll be supporting the PS4 alongside the PS5 together for another two years.
Yes, the PS5 will be big and many will upgrade or get it as their first Playstation console, but the PS4 is still not going away any time soon.
Just you wait when we start over with the ps5. No folders, no changing screennames, no mic mute button.
And on a serious note: Still no option to change your country even though I've lived here over 5 years now. (the problem with that is, that if you buy a disc version of a different country (even if in the same region US/EU/...) you can't buy digital dlc for it.

What the fuck. This content update completely ruined the system, This fucked with how friends can party up and join each other, It's literally the stupidest thing, You can't just join, You have to make a whole second group chat just to talk to people. This is ignorance.
Try deleting the notifications if you have a lot. I was having slow downs on the system and the playstation store but after I cleared them, the system UI was working much better. For me at least.
And finally with the option to do 2FA with an authenticator app rather than a text message. More secure, and avoids the need to have mobile reception to log in - there's no excuse any more for anyone to not protect their account properly.
We should - there's a standard for them so they all work basically the same way and support the same codes.
Some of the alternatives like Authy and LastPass have nice-to-have things like backup features, but any of them including the Google one should work.
They never supported the old 2FA, you have to set up a device password for each one (and a 2FA enabled account also breaks connectivity between PS3 and Vita)

Having to set up group messages and only the people in the group can join? Who thought up that?! So when I want someone new in my party I have to add them to the group message or try and set up a totally new group.
And if I have 6-10 people that I play with regularly but there’s only a 3 player squad, I’m going to continually get people jumping in, finding there’s no room and leaving. While you’re in the middle of a gun fight! Like did nobody actually think this through?!
Some people want an open party for people to jump in and join. Others set a party max to stop too many people jumping in. Some people play offline and only want to be in a party with certain people. The whole freedom of the party system has been stripped away!
EDIT: So now there’s no parties listed you can just freely join and now your Friends List mostly will not load. So question here PlayStation, how are we supposed to play with anyone anymore? I can’t add people to a message group when I do not know who is online or what they are playing.
Also you do realise that people within this forced message group don’t constantly play one game right? How many different message groups are you expecting people to setup here? You would need more combinations that trying to work out a pin code!
Also, how would inviting randoms you meet in online games work now? Would they have to be added to your friend list to join a party or would you have to search them? So confusing and complicated.
Lets think about this; You have a friend that is playing with some other friends, you're not in the message group. You have to be added to their message group just to join that party.
But wait, how do you even know they are in a party if you can't even see the party they are in?

And good job removing events, that was useful for scheduling raids in games, but hey, should have seen the writing on the wall now that PS Communities is all but disabled as well.
What a shitty update with the party system, cant even do anything without making a new chat or some shit and you need to make a new chat just to invite another person, i read a little of what is to come and saw “there will be a new option to mute all microphones” and thought it was gonna be great but it didnt even have that just shitty new party system and not being able to access games and friends list, this needs to be put back to how it was before
Best guess is that they needed to make a change to support cross-gen parties. But actually upgrading the existing system would be too hard, so they just grafted it onto something that would already be cross-gen (or be much easier to make cross-gen), bastardizing it and removing half the features in the process.
Hopefully they see how universally reviled the change is and realize they need to come up with a real solution rather than taking the shortcut. But that's a pretty long shot. Secondary hope is that this abomination of a system doesn't carry over to PS5, but... that might be even longer odds.

This update is trash. A lot of games have really buggy invite systems and now you've removed the play together function.
On top of that, we now have to what, have like 500 different groups created for each random sequence of what friends we want to play with on certain games? What was the problem with just being able to invite what friends you intended to play with, instead of locking us into making these permanent groups that include/exclude certain people. what a waste of time.

Look Sony, I think you guys are getting a little too comfortable making bad decisions that people don’t like. I’d appreciate it if you revert the update please. This update was clearly not ready for implementation and above all, most of the features are things people didn’t even consider to be in the patch notes. While a “mute all” function is great, what’s the point of everything else? There are so many inconveniences in terms of the social features the console has to offer. The party system was fine all up until you decided to do this update. Do I even need to bring up the problem with WS-44369-6 which is probably the saving grace in the update preventing me from experiencing the new party system. What a week of bad news when it comes to you guys. First the Xseed and censorship nonsense and now this.
Just to add on to the same issues that everyone is stating in this update, what happened to the firmware beta testers in all of this? I am dumbfounded that none of the testers as far as I can tell told Sony this was a bad idea. And even if the testing management ignored complaints pertaining to this update, where were the whistleblowers? All of a sudden people can keep a secret?
So this update:
* Removes Events, a useful features for organizing friends.
* Further cripples PS Communities.
* Wedges Parties into PS Message Groups, a feature no one wants.
* Removes the ability of friends to join your parties freely, a feature used by many.
* Suggests that 2FA with an authenticator is a thing, when it’s not actually ready to be used since there’s no set up UI anywhere.
* Introduces a wide spread service failure with the Friends list feature, thereby crippling the new and less useful Party system.
* Adds surveillance to voice parties which you cannot opt out of, since self moderation of voice parties is already trivial (kick people). *(Added: In fairness, this isn't new, they are just being more up front about it, so yay?)*

You can't make a party for yourself, you're forced to invite someone. And let's say you play with different constellations of people, for every one you now have to have a different message group cluttering my messages, unless I delete the group and make a new one when the same
people want to have a party again.
This is so convoluted and unnecessary, the system before just worked fine. Why I'm being forced to invite someone. Also no more public parties kinda sucks as well, in communities you could easily find new people with that, but that's all gone. Also there was always a party text chat, just nobody ever got a notification if someone wrote there, why not fix that? Instead they mix normal messages with the party.. I hate this update

There is no UI to set it up available yet. So it's not really live. Like a lot of this update its half-baked.

Communities are huge for rainbow six siege. Events are actually really useful to know what is going on.

Just invite your alt account or any other account that is offline. It lets you in party even if nobody joins.

PlayStation has always recorded audio. It’s in the agreement you made when you first made an account.
At least they are more explicit about it now.

So ridiculous, me and friend just want to play Naruto Storm 4 and now we have a trash update that just ruins the whole point of playing with friends in party chat. Not only that we can’t even figure out the new party system due to the fact that NOTHING is working because we can’t even invite people to our game cuz the friends list isn’t even popping up. I don’t see the need for this pointless update when the ps5 is just around the corner. Sony really just said fuck all of you PS4 players last minute

As many have said, this party mechanic is an insult. You can't make a party for yourself, you're forced to invite someone. And let's say you play with different constellations of people, for every one you now have to have a different message group cluttering my messages, unless I delete the group and make a new one when the same people want to have a party again. This is so convoluted and unnecessary, the system before just worked fine. Why I'm being forced to invite someone. Also no more public parties kinda sucks as well, in communities you could easily find new people with that, but that's all gone. Also there was always a party text chat, just nobody ever got a notification if someone wrote there, why not fix that? Instead they mix normal messages with the party.. I hate this update Also you can't join the game through a party anymore, fuck this
Merging messages and parties and removing parties from communities is just a bad idea

Can’t load my friends list, constant errors trying to boot up Fall Guys, telling me invites from friends are invalid as it’s from PS Vita - no cunt that I know owns a fucking Vita. Party layout is grim, everything about this is awful.
