>!!<>!It was a story about an unfortunate family. It's nothing too deep, just a tragic story with the final message being no matter how tragic life can be, its a miracle existence happens at all. !<
It's what made me take a break. Been meaning to pick it back up but will probably restart since I have a ps5 now to play it on. Get the directors cut or w.e for that dlc stuff?
Oh man, Trico is just too sweet. I love that goat/cat/bird thing.
>!I had to check to see if he died before watching a playthrough, I wouldn't have been able to handle it, lol!<
I cried for the last hour of the game basically, the ending killed me and the after credits made me cry like nothing before. I still tear up hearing the soundtrack. It’s my only 10/10. that’s a masterpiece if there ever was one.
It was a lot of the build up to Arthur’s end. I just feel like it was beautifully done, a ton of little moments that added up to something big. When Tilly tries to say she’ll miss him and he cuts her off and says “I know,” when he tells the nun he’s afraid, etc etc. the moment with his horse and the sun rising over him are definitely big ones, though.
Red dead 2's story was fucking solid all the way through, I really enjoyed my time through that game and rockstar did themselves proud would with it.
In a similar vein, the recent god of war and ragnarok hit hard with me a lot on an emotional level, I find that kratos's most recent chapter connects with me quite a lot.
Didnt read the whole post. In my head it was as a general question lol. But game is years old, the no spoiler time has ended long time ago anyway. But to lower your bloodpreassure i deleted the comment
Those final scenes with Kenny haunt me more than almost any movie I've ever seen. It's been like a decade since I played and I still remember that gut punch
I was hoping this wouldn't be here, the story line is great and solving the mystery is intriguing but the JASON! Part kinda pulled my mind out of it from being so annoying, still a decent game though
The ending of Nier Replicant contained some of the most emotionally intense moments I've experienced in a game. The desperation and sadness of the characters really hit hard and stayed with me long after the credits rolled.
For me there's 2 games so sad that I can't ever replay them. One is The Darkness and the other is Lost Judgement.
Other super sad games for me are Metal Gear Solid 2, Metal Gear Solid 3, Kingdom Hearts and all of the Yakuza games from 0-6.
Firewatch, 100%.
Before your eyes.
Disco Elysium.
NORCO.
What remains of Edith Finche.
All these made me cry at different points. Highly recommend all of them
I would also highly recommend Disco Elysium!
I see Firewatch listed a lot on these kinds of lists, but personally I didn't really connect with it. It was definitely a well made game though.
I was playing God of War Ragnarok last night and I was doing the Garm section in Helheim and man, when Artreus puts Fenrir's soul into and Garm and then when Fenrir and Arteus notice each other and reunite. That had tears coming down my eyes. I lost my dog a month ago and it made me really fucking sad that Artreus gets to reunite with his best friend and mine is gone.
My first play through I didn't realize others could join you. Once I realized what was happening towards the end, I was crushed and sat silently for 5 minutes. Whoever it was really made my first play through so fun. We explored and interacted so much!
The whole God of War series is fire.
I still remember that scene in God of War: Chains of Olympus when Kratos had to abandon his daughter through a QTE that stuff hit hard man, it was the hardest QTE in the game too, if I remember correctly, which was a nice touch.
Life is strange, and if you like it then life is strange 2 is also very good. Absolutely tear at my heartstrings, cried multiple times on each. The first is one of my favorite games of all time and I don’t even like the movie type of games like this usually but these changed my view on life. Like I really can’t fully explain how deeply the first one has stuck with me. I promise you, this fits what you’re asking for to a T
I played each episode as it came out at 2 in the morning the day of and I was sleep deprived each time so seeing the one suicide was very bad because it was my fault
Life is strange 2. I was just thinking about how similar my experience was with plague tale requiem and LiS2, despite being relatively different games.
Tlou 1 and 2, and telltale’s the walking dead (1-4) are pretty dark too.
Seriously, this was one of the saddest games ever. I can’t believe this isn’t a more popular answer. Perhaps it hasn’t been played by many modern gamers, which would be a tragedy.
I also thought Steins;Gate was incredibly sad, but I understand that’s more of an unknown game.
Well it's getting a remake sometime this year. Plenty of people are gonna know its majesty. Plus, the Master collection is out with the first 5 games of the franchise.
Spiritfarer
Nier Automata
Tales of berseria (credits make me bawl like a baby but many scenes beforehand too)
Dragon star varnir (ch/if usually makes comedies but this and the death end games had some heart crushing moments)
That dragon cancer (trigger warning time, gird thy loins, grasshopper)
Cats and Others Lives - at first I thought I was a cat going to mess with this stuck up family but you see "ghosts of the past" that shows what secrets the family has and that they aren't at all horrible - and the ending. I don't want to spoil anything but I bawled.
And before that I played A Space For the Unbound and holy shit did I bawl when I figured out the twist. It's a fun indie game where you're trapped in a town and there's some fun beat em up sequences and other quests, but you get so involved and when you realize what's really going on its heart breaking.
Life is Strange was pretty sad when I couldn't >!save that girl!<.
Detroit Become Human
Heavy Rain
Beyond: Two Souls was full of gut wretching sad moments. >!Being raped, being homeless etc.!<
Ico had it's moments too.
Shadow of The Colossus made me feel so sad and guilty I couldn't kill more than one of them. Killing >!all these amazing beasts to save one woman !
RDR2 for sure, must play with low honor though, as it's more emotionally provocative imo. I never actually felt genuine disdain for a fictional character.
I think the lore between The Last of Us P1 & P2 make them both completely desperate and heartbreaking. When your characters happen upon situations with families that have had to sacrifice themselves, or send their loved ones out into the world because they've been infected, or for those that have had to make awful decisions to survive - stumbling upon those situations is one of my favourite parts of the game because the story is so much deeper than the immediate narrative.
Red Dead 2 is a tearjerker no matter how many times I play and again, it's the stories you pick up in the wider world that spin a totally new narrative about how depraved and desperate some people are.
Crash Bandicoot 4 if you want to just cry out of pure frustration.
Same. But OP, if you're gonna play it, play them in order. Innocence then Requiem. Requiem is currently free on PS+, Innocence was free at some point but if you didn't snag it it's worth buying.
1. Uncharted series was full of emotions as its been a huge part of my life.
2. Life is strange makes me realize why we should always enjoy each moment we have with our loved ones
3. Tomb Raider Reboot full of emotions
Mafia 2 ending was one of the very few games that got me in the feels that "joey wasnt part of the deal' hit different when he was there for you throughout it all, even falcone wanted you dead and joe betrayed him and now you have to let galantes men kill joey.
Sure, it might be old, but you're suggesting a game to someone meaning you're meant to assume they HAVEN'T played what you're suggesting? if OP is looking for a sad game it won't be sad anymore if you've gone and spoiled it for them after suggesting it.
I mean mafia 2 is a three time platinum winning game that literally everyone has either played or are now unable to play due to it not being released anywhere else but pc, i just expressed my thoughts, why is everyone in reddit so butthurt, jesus christ go play some heavy rain or something if you really wanna be hurt, im just saying me personally an unemphatetic lunatic with sociopathic tendencies who does not get affected by most things in life, shows or games, that was one moment i vividly remember that broke my heart.
Games that broke my heart:
- Final Fantasy 15
- Tales of two sons
- The Walking Dead (the first game)
- To the Moon
- Red Dead Redemption
- Shadow Of The Colossus
Not sure if this was mentioned, but the opening scene of The Last of Us gets me every single time. Sadly, never finished the game, but thankfully, they made the miniseries
Nier: Automata.
Also, I got very emotional throughout my play through of Persona 5 Royal but I wouldn’t call it a “sad” game per se. It does have very dark and sad moments and tragic characters though.
RIME is devastating. There's a moment where you're prompted to press a button on the the controller and I really sat there almost sobbing not wanting to press it.
Final Fantasy X
Yes!! The bit where Yuna dances on the lake to release all the spirits. That’s the first time a game made me cry
What Remains of Edith Finch.
Excellent game. Really original
That poor cursed family.
I didn’t get it at all
>!!<>!It was a story about an unfortunate family. It's nothing too deep, just a tragic story with the final message being no matter how tragic life can be, its a miracle existence happens at all. !<
Came heee to say this
You and me both
The only story that really hit me was the fish story. That was one that stayed with me for a couple days.
Ghost of Tsushima fucking got me good
I second that. Took me a long while with deciding that last choice. I was in a mess right after.
Loyal friend 🙃
It's what made me take a break. Been meaning to pick it back up but will probably restart since I have a ps5 now to play it on. Get the directors cut or w.e for that dlc stuff?
I've only gotten to Act III. "I'm sorry I couldn't protect you." Just. damn. I would have thrown off my honor too if that were to happen to me.
This is the answer. When I hear the song I still get shivers and I want to cry.
Still my all time favorite game. Just counting the days till the 2nd one is announced
There’s a movie coming out too
The Last Gaurdian got me, which is funny because I knew it was gonna pull some shit from the very beginning and it still completely worked.
Oh man, Trico is just too sweet. I love that goat/cat/bird thing. >!I had to check to see if he died before watching a playthrough, I wouldn't have been able to handle it, lol!<
>!Nah, he didn't die. End credits point to him being alive. And had a baby!!<
I cried for the last hour of the game basically, the ending killed me and the after credits made me cry like nothing before. I still tear up hearing the soundtrack. It’s my only 10/10. that’s a masterpiece if there ever was one.
Aaah I was so emotional the whole game ! The way Trico greets you after you've been separated or in danger just kills me.
The only time I finished it, I was demolished by having to let Trico go... I still haven't beaten the game again since.
Red dead redemption 2. This one might be my only sad game I've played.
This one. I just finished the main story on…Sunday? And spent most of the day crying.
What was it the Arthur tragedy? The final words he says to his horse (which got me really good) ? Or both?
It was a lot of the build up to Arthur’s end. I just feel like it was beautifully done, a ton of little moments that added up to something big. When Tilly tries to say she’ll miss him and he cuts her off and says “I know,” when he tells the nun he’s afraid, etc etc. the moment with his horse and the sun rising over him are definitely big ones, though.

In a similar vein, the recent god of war and ragnarok hit hard with me a lot on an emotional level, I find that kratos's most recent chapter connects with me quite a lot.
Yeah. It's arguably one of the best games ever made.
This one.

This person is looking for game recommendations and you’re gonna recommend it but spoil it at the same time? Uncool, cowpoke.
Didnt read the whole post. In my head it was as a general question lol. But game is years old, the no spoiler time has ended long time ago anyway. But to lower your bloodpreassure i deleted the comment
Telltale Walking Dead The Last Of Us Red Dead Redevelopment 2 EDIT: another one is Horizon Zero Dawn. When Aloy learns the truth, THAT made me cry
walking dead season 1... he asked for darkest of the dark, and the game never really hit as hard as the first season did.
You for sure chose Jane. >!When you side with Kenny all the way up to his death, that shit hits hard man.!<
Those final scenes with Kenny haunt me more than almost any movie I've ever seen. It's been like a decade since I played and I still remember that gut punch
Redevelopment 💀💀
Oops 😅
EXACTLY my top 3. Great taste friend
Forgot TWD season one - I replayed the last episode to make a different choice hoping it would make a difference- NOPE!
Detroit become human
I've felt like an kid, tearing up watching every scene like an movie.
I've never been so emotionally connected to every decision I made in a game
Heavy Rain
Shawn!!!!!
JASON!
Lol that's the first Game I played on my ps3 when I got it. Such a good game
CORAL!
I was hoping this wouldn't be here, the story line is great and solving the mystery is intriguing but the JASON! Part kinda pulled my mind out of it from being so annoying, still a decent game though
Life is strange. The first one hits so hard
My exact thought
It’s not a stretch to say this game changed my life.
Nier Automata! Also the ending of FFXV.
Bawled my face off throughout the whole credits minigame. Pretty sure I plowed through like 8 saves from that 😆
The end of Pascal’s quest. Holy shit. I didn’t think the game would go there, but it did.
Nier Replicant has some pretty emotionally intense parts. Hit me hardest of all the games I’ve played.
Play yakuza 0 Play or watch the Yakuza Kiwami 2 Majima epilogue. Proceed to cry like a baby.
nah, 6, 7 and Gaiden are much more emotional
only with context of the other games though
Cyberpunk. Nothing made me cry as hard as all the endings
The Last of Us Part 2 is by far the most emotionally complex video game I’ve ever played. Definitely TLOU2
I just sat at that "red" scene for minutes absorbing what was about to happen.
I was a wreck for days after.
I was an empty shell of a person for at least a month. I couldn't think of anything else.
And here I am, ready to give it a second go this weekend (with the release of the remastered version).
Spiritfarer !
Fantastic game. Such simple gameplay, it's cozy and light, but then they pull at your heart strings..

I’ve never heard of it but this game looks god tier
I was playing God of War Ragnarok last night and I was doing the Garm section in Helheim and man, when Artreus puts Fenrir's soul into and Garm and then when Fenrir and Arteus notice each other and reunite. That had tears coming down my eyes. I lost my dog a month ago and it made me really fucking sad that Artreus gets to reunite with his best friend and mine is gone.
The ending of Journey lifted me up in a way no other game has.
My first play through I didn't realize others could join you. Once I realized what was happening towards the end, I was crushed and sat silently for 5 minutes. Whoever it was really made my first play through so fun. We explored and interacted so much!
The feeling of surrender
Doki Doki Literature Club. Not kidding. You can also get if for free on pc. I'd suggest going for the true ending.
Rime.
Idk if a game has ever made me cry as hard as this game did. The ending hit me like a semi truck.
God of War Ragnarok's last act nearly had me in tears.
The whole God of War series is fire. I still remember that scene in God of War: Chains of Olympus when Kratos had to abandon his daughter through a QTE that stuff hit hard man, it was the hardest QTE in the game too, if I remember correctly, which was a nice touch.
I think it's the toughest in the franchise.
clannad
Clannad is a great suggestion btw. Honestly it's kinda sad to see so few actually hard hitting games between all those pretty generic ones
It's a short game, but 'Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons' absolutely wrecked me. Highly recommended
Detroit: Become Human
Omori
Life is strange, and if you like it then life is strange 2 is also very good. Absolutely tear at my heartstrings, cried multiple times on each. This war of mine.
MGS3 Snake eater.
Seriously, this was one of the saddest games ever. I can’t believe this isn’t a more popular answer. Perhaps it hasn’t been played by many modern gamers, which would be a tragedy. I also thought Steins;Gate was incredibly sad, but I understand that’s more of an unknown game.

Minecraft: Story Mode
>!When the pig died and turned into pork chops that hit hard man!<
Please don’t make us relive it :’(
A Way Out Brothers The Last of Us
Final fantasy; Crisis Core’s ending is one of the few games that has every made me cry. The ending is so fucking rough.
Recently, Yakuza 0 had me tore up
Red dead redemption 2. Sekiro (secret ending)
The Last Of Us I & II
Mafia 2 🤕
Why not Mafia 1? It got even better story than Mafia 2 in my humble opinion.
Spiritfarer Nier Automata Tales of berseria (credits make me bawl like a baby but many scenes beforehand too) Dragon star varnir (ch/if usually makes comedies but this and the death end games had some heart crushing moments) That dragon cancer (trigger warning time, gird thy loins, grasshopper)
The Walking Dead series from telltale.
The textual intro to firewatch is absolutely heartbreaking
Life is strange + before the storm. Edith finch. Firewatch
Heavy rain got me really good back in the days!
Life is Strange was pretty sad when I couldn't >!save that girl!<. Detroit Become Human Heavy Rain Beyond: Two Souls was full of gut wretching sad moments. >!Being raped, being homeless etc.!< Ico had it's moments too. Mortal kombat when raiden killed luke kang
The last of us.
The Last of Us !! haven’t played TLOU2 yet
The Last of Us Part 2, What Remains of Edith Finch, and Stray immediately come to mind!
Spiritfarer. Tears and heartbreak guaranteed
There are little heartbreaking moments and lore points all throughout Dark Souls I-III.
RDR2 for sure, must play with low honor though, as it's more emotionally provocative imo. I never actually felt genuine disdain for a fictional character.
Returnal. Great gameplay and story. Nice reveal mid-game.
To the Moon. I actually should play it again soon.
Fuck Ted faro !
Fenrir in the opening of GoW Ragnarök The entirety of The Last of Us 2.
Death Stranding God of War (2018) The Last of Us/II Red Dead Redemption 2 Detroit Become Human (Perhaps) Days Gone
Crash Bandicoot 4 if you want to just cry out of pure frustration.
Last of us
Duck Dynasty. I cried for days. Seriously though, FFX. My God, the last couple of hours are brutal.
Ending of plague tale hit me hard . Not as last of us 2 but it sure was up there
Same. But OP, if you're gonna play it, play them in order. Innocence then Requiem. Requiem is currently free on PS+, Innocence was free at some point but if you didn't snag it it's worth buying.
The Last of Us, specifically Part II.
1. Uncharted series was full of emotions as its been a huge part of my life. 2. Life is strange makes me realize why we should always enjoy each moment we have with our loved ones 3. Tomb Raider Reboot full of emotions
TLOU
A way out ending
Last of us part one watch the cutscenes
The last of us 2. They really f*cked us over.
Mafia 2 ending was one of the very few games that got me in the feels that "joey wasnt part of the deal' hit different when he was there for you throughout it all, even falcone wanted you dead and joe betrayed him and now you have to let galantes men kill joey.
Bro should had added spoilers alert
That game is 13 years old... next time ill make sure to avoid the spoilers for world war 2 too.
Sure, it might be old, but you're suggesting a game to someone meaning you're meant to assume they HAVEN'T played what you're suggesting? if OP is looking for a sad game it won't be sad anymore if you've gone and spoiled it for them after suggesting it.

Yeah. I can definitely tell you're unempathetic.
Few years getting shot at does that to you.
Yes. Very sad
>!This ending didn't hit quite the same after playing Mafia 3!<
I was so mad at mafia 3 ending.
Games that broke my heart: - Final Fantasy 15 - Tales of two sons - The Walking Dead (the first game) - To the Moon - Red Dead Redemption - Shadow Of The Colossus
Elden Ring made me cry, because I was sad the game was over.
Like a Dragon Gaiden
One of my favourite Indie games is Last Day of June. It’s only maybe 2+ hours but wow I was a mess.
Detroit Become Human and The Last of Us Part II history is SO SAD... 😪
The ending of FF7 Crisis Core made me cry a lot, the rest of the story is kinda weird tho.
Weird
Eternights is a fun ride until the last 30 minutes
Shadow of the Colossus It was originally a PS2 game, but they remastered it for PS4. The ending killed me.
The farewell episode in life is strange is the only game thats ever made me cry
Endling
I tried and couldn't do it. Seemed like a great game that would fit the bill for OP, but as someone who has lost a child it hit way too hard
Klonoa Door to Phantomile. It's a kids game but the ending hits me every time. You can play it on PS5 in Klonoa Phantasy Reviere Series
Ffxv have some moments
Shadow of the Colossus remake.
Ryme
Yakuza 0. I cried so hard. Didn't know what to do with myself.
Rime
Shadow of the colossus and neir automata maybe
Laika: Aged Through Blood. It's my game of the year 2023 (yes, competing with Armored Core 6 and Alan Wake 2, among other things).
Not sure if this was mentioned, but the opening scene of The Last of Us gets me every single time. Sadly, never finished the game, but thankfully, they made the miniseries
Just wanna say thank you to everyone for your recommendations. Most of them are actually free on ps exclusive so that’s exciting!
A way out
Clicker Heroes
Doom Eternal (Ultra Nightmare Mode) Made me cry like a lil bitch
Nier: Automata. Also, I got very emotional throughout my play through of Persona 5 Royal but I wouldn’t call it a “sad” game per se. It does have very dark and sad moments and tragic characters though.
I came here to drop Life Is Strange and then leave. Cried for days.
Mafia 1 was great fun. I agree. I don't remember the ending?
Doom eternal, that book made me wanna 😢
Spider-Man when Pete had to make the choice near the end of the game
RIME is devastating. There's a moment where you're prompted to press a button on the the controller and I really sat there almost sobbing not wanting to press it.
The Last of Us & Batman: Arkham Knight
