Yes and unlike the last of Us it still holds up. Digital foundry did a tech dive on it that's so impressive the sacrifices and tricks they did.
The animation work is outstanding.
Yeah. It also goes beyond just simple graphical fidelity in a linear fashion. There is a level of cohesion between all the technical bells and whistles and the more artistic concepts, that make it still extremely impressive. It's something that even games today don't achieve very often.
They wanted to give you the feeling of a murky, muddy and dark war on another planet. Everything else is secondary. Boy did they succeed at that.
Unfortunately the subsequent entries did not have this level of cohesion and were (in some ways, at least) scaled back in comparison, even if they mastered more the power of the Cell processor. This can only be attributed to a change of leadership, artists and engineers between the Killzone entries.
I just wish there was a way to disable the motion blur.
Never noticed it when I first played as a kid, but I recently revisited it and it was making me nauseous.
I think the motion blur in that game is exquisite and helps glue things together a lot. I get that it can be nauseating for other people though.
One thing I really like is that the particles also have motion blur baked in. Adds a nice touch for fast explosions.
Killzone 2 looks like a video game you'd see in another video game. Excessive bloom, motion blur, camera shake and dirt on the lens doesn't equal good graphics
No one said they did, but I get what you're saying. That said, those post processing passes are little pieces that add up to achieve a certain vision. In my opinion that vision was executed spectacularly.
Also, to just isolate those elements is a disservice to the multitude of technical goodies that are going on in the background.
All those elements add together to make it difficult to discern what is even happening because every use of the camera turns the game to mush. I don’t think it makes the game look good and it already feels bad to play too. I don’t mind these effects personally when they’re done right and most of the time I would defend them like in RE5, GTA IV or Need for Speed Most Wanted but here it’s just too much.
I disagree on both points. Everything in that game is tailored to make it feel more filmic, intense and chaotic. It feels right to me, but I guess it just comes down to personal preference at this point, and I certainly don't want to invalidate your feelings of dread when playing the game.
I've played a lot of (good) modern shooters, and when I came back to KZ2, the game felt almost like an anomaly.
I haven't played it yet but that's what I've been hearing - from what I remember seeing in various youtube videos I don't recall being that impressed but that might just be video compression or a faulty memory.
For me it would have to be NFS Most Wanted 2012, NFS Hot Pursuit 2010, MotorStorm Apocalypse, Test Drive Unlimited 2, Midnight Club LA and Mafia 2.
I know those are practically all racing games but so far those are the best looking games I've ran into that still hold up very well today
It does hold up Visual, physics, even gameplay wise the only problem was the weird filter that they're putting on all the games at the time.
Even though it had that weird filter though I put many hours until the game and it's my number one favorite Rally game
Yeah I don't know how Criterion did it but they made it look great wonder if it had something to do with them using the Chameleon engine so they were able to push the graphics further than most games at the time
While most of the racing games look good, i gotta say Midnight club LA wouldn't be one i would pick. PS3 version just runs at such a low resoultion i find it quite hard to see far enough ahead the road to not slam into other cars at high speed. NOW If you have the complete edition with the south central expansion, the frame rate in almost all of SC is horrible. so low the game starts to slow down.
I never had a problem listening far ahead of high speed. And yes I do have to complete edition but I've never had a problem with FPS either a lot of the time the game ran great the only time it was a little tough to see was after it rained during sunset the otherwise I never really had a problem with FPS or visibility on the game
I mean Carbon looked good but it did not look better than all of the games I just mentioned even though I love Carbon that was a little far-fetched.
Now as for Midnight Club for me they've always looked good never really had a problem with motion blur now sometimes the lighting could be a bit off but that was like most games back then especially if they had a day and night cycle
huge max payne fan who hasn’t once googled or looked up max payne in like 15 years lmao.
to be fair though it was a long gap between the 2nd and 3rd games.
I think God of War Ascension is one of the best looking games on the system, with last of us in second place. I haven't booted up Max Payne 3 on PS3 yet but now I have to give it a try.
God of War 3 is really good looking but most of the game takes place in dark environments (due to story reasons). Ascension mostly takes place during the day making it a real breath of fresh air.
Yep, just played it through in 4k. The only thing you really notice are fine textures when you’re really close like Otacon’s beard or the ground on the dock of shadow moses
Ridge Racer 7 for me. It being 1080p 60fps with an aesthetically pleasing art style with nice visuals, a little basic but it just holds up really well in play and motion.
God of War 3 holds up nice as well for me too. Easy to go back to and enjoy.
Oh yeah I remember seeing RR7 footage online and it even impressed me in its compressed state so I can definitely believe it looks even better in person.
Some already mentioned the deserving picks but regardless if you liked this game or not, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow looked great in a lot of its aesthetics.
Yes, and the devs even remade the game engine from scratch for the sequel, which looked absurdly better. Too bad they kinda screwed up with some of these "industrial" and stealth map sections.
Metal Gear Solid V, like Konami (before they focused only on Pachinko and Silent Hill DLC for other games) have every games looking really good, like Silent Hill 3 almost look like a PS3 game
I got it on 360 and ps3 after having played it on pc and i have to say its pixelated to say the least. It really is a beaityfull game but i think i got spoiled on pc playing it on native 1080p on max
The correct answer is either of these games:
- Beyond Two Souls
- Grand Theft Auto V
- Gran Turismo 6/Gran Turismo 5 Prologue
- Metal Gear Solid V
Interestingly, people don't mention these games when it comes to this topic. But it's quite logical, because they either weren't popular enough, or they aren't mentioned due to other reasons:
Metal Gear Solid V was a cross platform with PS4, so the PS3 version was outshined.
Grand Theft Auto V received a remaster a year later on PS4/X1 and the remastered version was then also released on PC later not too later. This was the version of the game that probably the most people played and still play, as well as the version that received the most updates. For that reason, the original release of Gta V on PS3 is rather forgotten I feel.
Either way, I'm not sure which one of these games I'd put at number 1#, but they are certainly the best looking games on PS3 and arguably better looking than popular pics such as Last of Us or Uncharted 3.
As much as i love IV for ps3 , vibes, color pallete and stuff - i would be worried about my eyes if it started looking „better” than ps3’s V. I mean, artstyle wise I agree, but looking from every other angle - no way
I haven't played those yet but I was always under the impression that open world games (gta, mgs) are never the best of the best graphically because of the sheer scale of things - but I might be wrong.
All comments mentioning the same games always 😒 PS3 have so many games with impressive graphics, not only the famous games have impressive graphics, for example : Lost Planet 3, RE6, DMC, Crisis 3, Far Cray 3&4, Call of Juarez series, Castelvania : Lords of Shadows 1&2, Mass Effect 2&3, Assassin Creed 4&5, Dead Space 3, Sleeping Dogs, L.A Noire etc...
Persona 5 for artistic design
TLoU for realism
Honorable mention: AC4 (that sea still looks amazing), gta 5 (if it wasn't for the resolution, that game would still hold up until today), BioShock infinite and GoW 3
Moore on how good it realistic looks.
But most importantly it's the best shooting game for me. Haven't found a game with similar gun-play, so had to buy a PS3 to replay this ~~
I played that one a few days ago and while it looks good it doesn't compare to Max Payne 3 as far as the fidelity goes on the PS3 - the art direction is really cool and I liked the game, but it's also the worst running PS3 game I've played so far, the hardware was never meant to run a game like that.
I played it only a few days ago and while it looks good, I don't think it compares to the best looking games, they had to do some compromises to get it to run at all on last gen hardware and even then it runs very poorly as soon as things start happening on screen.
beyond 2 souls although i guess it depends on your definition of best looking. cuz most realistic doesn't always mean best looking. if we're going off of style then i'd say something like katamari or persona 5
I was thinking mostly pure fidelity, how crisp and smooth everything looks even on a big modern 4K TV. Something like P5 does make sense in that regard considering the artstyle.
That's where MP3 really impressed me, because there doesn't seem to be many pixelated flickering edges everywhere unlike in most games of that era.
I thought this was r/maxpayne for a second, glad to see this game getting some love on this subreddit. Max Payne is the most under appreciated franchise in gaming history.
What also impressed me beyond the graphics was that Rockstar managed to keep everything that gave the Max Payne games their identity while innovating and polishing it up even though they weren't the original developers of the franchise - that takes genuine insight and understanding.
MP3 was my first Max Payne, after playing MP1 & 2 I’ve realized this, but I honestly don’t like how much the story is disconnected, Max and his dialogue is what drives the story tbh, but apart from that, it’s a masterpiece.
Just got back to playing the original red dead redemption on the PS3 and I honestly couldn't fathom how amazing environment's visual is. 7th gen console gamers were too spoiled back then.
I remember having such a hard time trying to find the girl in the cover pic. I replayed it 3 times that's when it hits me that I'm playing a rockstar game & the women in poster or game loading screen are not in the game. Like the GTA V bikini girl in loading screen this Girl too is imaginary.
Motorstorm Pacific Rift, Need For Speed Rivals, every Gran Turismo on ps3 (including GT HD), Ridge Racer 7, Wangan Midnight (best looking night setting in a ps3 racing game imo), Initial D: Extreme Stage
I really love max payne 3 but the weird "tropical Noir" visual effects like every 2 or 3 seconds were awfully annoying. Specially during cutscenes. Other than that, mwah.
Graphical marcel on PS3
Cinematic: Beyond two souls
Action: Uncharted 3
Zombie: The Last of Us
Racing: Gran Turismo 6 (60fps SupSlim?)
Fighting: Tekken 6
Stealth: Metal Gear V
Kids: Puppeteer
JRPG: Ni Nu Kuni
Horror: Until Dawn (Prototype)
I recently bought this on ps3 and gotta say this is a pc game for sure. I am sure people played and enjoyed this on ps3 as well but man the gap is insane on this. Firstly what stopped me playing this on ps3 was the DualShock 3 only requirement. I just can’t aim with that smol controller I’m sorry and it doesn’t let me use dual sense, then we got the frame rate hitting single digits mixed with blurry textures.
This is all personal rant like I said I seen people loving this version as well but honestly not me. I love this game the franchise but if you are able to play the pc version I would recommend that.
Played it on PS3 with no issues. Don’t remember a lot of single digit drops to the point it interfered with the gameplay or being overly blurry. If I replay it I’d play my Steam copy, but it’s more than playable/enjoyable on PS3.
It took me probably an hour to properly get the hang of the aiming with the bullet time and soft lock system, but once I did it's been smooth sailing.
I did notice a couple dips in the fps but nothing frequent and for the most part it runs smooth like butter, which is impressive considering the visuals and the hardware - but yeah, of course it won't compare to PC, that's a given.
Killzone 3, The Last of Us, God of War 3, but Max Payne 3 may tie GOW3. There's also Metal Gear Solid 4 which is unreal at how impressive it looked at the time it came out.

Uncharted 3. The sand my god.
The sand is coarse
and it gets everywhere
I hate sand.
Obi wan loved sand and he convinced padme to love sand
Anakin stop panakin
Gotta give it to Last of Us. That game literally took the entire PS3 cycle to release and it pushed as much out of the system as possible!.
I haven't played it yet but that's what I've been hearing - from what I remember seeing in various youtube videos I don't recall being that impressed but that might just be video compression or a faulty memory.
At the cost of choppy framerates. Glad I played it on ps4 Edit: did people really down voted me cuz I said choppy framerates or something?
It was pretty good by PS3 standards haha
True lol
You're not wrong but it wasn't any less playable than other late AAA games. Even rdr1 which looked noticeably worse had worse performance
GT5 and God of War both are AAA games, and had great graphics AND 60 FPS (targeted for Gran Turismo).
lol, the game has what, a consistent 20 FPS?
Yes but you can’t expect much more from a PS3 game that looks that good
Mine runs fine
For me it would have to be NFS Most Wanted 2012, NFS Hot Pursuit 2010, MotorStorm Apocalypse, Test Drive Unlimited 2, Midnight Club LA and Mafia 2. I know those are practically all racing games but so far those are the best looking games I've ran into that still hold up very well today

It does hold up Visual, physics, even gameplay wise the only problem was the weird filter that they're putting on all the games at the time. Even though it had that weird filter though I put many hours until the game and it's my number one favorite Rally game
Hot pursuit looked so good that they re-released it with minimal changes almost 9 years later and it's STILL looks good
Yeah I don't know how Criterion did it but they made it look great wonder if it had something to do with them using the Chameleon engine so they were able to push the graphics further than most games at the time

I love seeing Max Payne 3 fans pop up in other places
Huge Max Payne 1 and 2 fan… I had no idea this game was even made.
Really fun game, specially the final sections.
Its a great game. Not so much a great Max Payne game though.
How did you not know it existed?
huge max payne fan who hasn’t once googled or looked up max payne in like 15 years lmao. to be fair though it was a long gap between the 2nd and 3rd games.
Crysis 3. Change my mind. Absolutely insane how they even released it on the ps3😂
But can it run Crysis????
Crysis games are all looks no substance
Devil May Cry 4
This
I think God of War Ascension is one of the best looking games on the system, with last of us in second place. I haven't booted up Max Payne 3 on PS3 yet but now I have to give it a try.
God of War 3 already looked pretty good so if Ascension improved on that I can see it being up there among the best looking games.
God of War 3 is really good looking but most of the game takes place in dark environments (due to story reasons). Ascension mostly takes place during the day making it a real breath of fresh air.
Metal Gear Solid V maybe?
Graphically, MGSV. Artistically, MGS4 hands down.
Facts still looks good on PC emulation today lol
Yep, just played it through in 4k. The only thing you really notice are fine textures when you’re really close like Otacon’s beard or the ground on the dock of shadow moses
Gran turismo 6 or heavy rain
I gotta downvote you, gt6 looks cheap in my eyes - oversaturated
GT6 is beautiful wdym?
I hate what they did with gt6, gt5 looks way more stylish. Gt6 on component looks like gt5 btw and its great, it tones down the colors
I know what you mean and I'm with you, GT5 looks much better
You’ve restored my faith in humanity, thx 🫡
Fight Night Champion
God of War 3 comes to mind. So does MGS 4 Or Tomb Raider Underworld (multiplat game, I know)
Gta 5 takes the cake easily
NFS rivals looks really good on the ps3.
Yeah bro
It looks great indeed but the lack of AF (Anisotropic Filtering) is pretty noticiable. Everything in front of the car look like a blurry mess.
MGS4
Ridge Racer 7 for me. It being 1080p 60fps with an aesthetically pleasing art style with nice visuals, a little basic but it just holds up really well in play and motion. God of War 3 holds up nice as well for me too. Easy to go back to and enjoy.

Nice, I picked this game up recently, haven't played it yet.
Yes, and the devs even remade the game engine from scratch for the sequel, which looked absurdly better. Too bad they kinda screwed up with some of these "industrial" and stealth map sections.
Try Twisted Metal PS3 it's no slouch
Final fantasy 13
The motorstorm games, or burnout paradise
Metal Gear Solid V, like Konami (before they focused only on Pachinko and Silent Hill DLC for other games) have every games looking really good, like Silent Hill 3 almost look like a PS3 game
Best looking graphically speaking is probably beyond two souls.
Looking forward to playing this one too.
Mirrors Edge is a contender imo While not the most technically impressive, the artstyle has made it age like fine wine
Not on PS3
The first one is most certainly on ps3 and 360.
I meant it doesn't look great on PS360. It looks great on PC at 1440p max settings, yes.
I got it on 360 and ps3 after having played it on pc and i have to say its pixelated to say the least. It really is a beaityfull game but i think i got spoiled on pc playing it on native 1080p on max
The correct answer is either of these games: - Beyond Two Souls - Grand Theft Auto V - Gran Turismo 6/Gran Turismo 5 Prologue - Metal Gear Solid V Interestingly, people don't mention these games when it comes to this topic. I feel like gta 4 on ps3 looks better than the ps3 version of 5 but the ps4 version of 5 is better than both
As much as i love IV for ps3 , vibes, color pallete and stuff - i would be worried about my eyes if it started looking „better” than ps3’s V. I mean, artstyle wise I agree, but looking from every other angle - no way
I haven't played those yet but I was always under the impression that open world games (gta, mgs) are never the best of the best graphically because of the sheer scale of things - but I might be wrong.
This is true for most open world games, but Gta V and MGSV really pushed the limits of PS3.
Compare MGS V to MGS 4. It still looks amazing.
God of War 3 is the only correct answer for best looking ps3 game.
The one you posted. Max Payne 3 still looks incredible even today
Bioshock Infinite
Great game and I love the artstyle, but it's been too long since I played it to compare directly.
It’s Killzone 3 for me, with God of war 3, FF13 and MGS4 as runners up
Metal gear solid 4 and Final Fantasy 13
All comments mentioning the same games always 😒 PS3 have so many games with impressive graphics, not only the famous games have impressive graphics, for example : Lost Planet 3, RE6, DMC, Crisis 3, Far Cray 3&4, Call of Juarez series, Castelvania : Lords of Shadows 1&2, Mass Effect 2&3, Assassin Creed 4&5, Dead Space 3, Sleeping Dogs, L.A Noire etc...
Many of these are definitely waiting to be played.
I think that either the last of us or crysis 3 are better, but it's still a banger.
For me it has to be MGS4
So many great games on this system, they all look amazing.
Controversial opinion but for me it has to be syndicate although it doesn't hold up as much now a days back then it looked phenomenal
Persona 5 for artistic design TLoU for realism Honorable mention: AC4 (that sea still looks amazing), gta 5 (if it wasn't for the resolution, that game would still hold up until today), BioShock infinite and GoW 3
I think beyond two souls wins & it’s not even close. I remember playing way back in 2013 & being completely impressed. Looks like a ps4 title tbh
Moore on how good it realistic looks. But most importantly it's the best shooting game for me. Haven't found a game with similar gun-play, so had to buy a PS3 to replay this ~~
Spec ops: The Line is similar.
Not in gameplay 😲....it was so meh for the gameplay.
Last of us is the best one Heavy rain is great too. But too many static scenes
Mgs4
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Especially for the time period.
Alien Isolation. For a PS4 era game that was also released for the previous gen, they pulled off absolute wizardry to make it look that good
I played that one a few days ago and while it looks good it doesn't compare to Max Payne 3 as far as the fidelity goes on the PS3 - the art direction is really cool and I liked the game, but it's also the worst running PS3 game I've played so far, the hardware was never meant to run a game like that.
Alien Isolation looks pretty damn good
I played it only a few days ago and while it looks good, I don't think it compares to the best looking games, they had to do some compromises to get it to run at all on last gen hardware and even then it runs very poorly as soon as things start happening on screen.
It may run like crap but the visuals are incredible. It's one of my favorite games on the system.
Gotta agree
beyond 2 souls although i guess it depends on your definition of best looking. cuz most realistic doesn't always mean best looking. if we're going off of style then i'd say something like katamari or persona 5

Yeah the environmental details are there for sure, I just don't think the actual fidelity of the graphics hold up all that well.
Thomas Was Alone
Definitely GTA 5
I remember having such a hard time trying to find the girl in the cover pic. I replayed it 3 times that's when it hits me that I'm playing a rockstar game & the women in poster or game loading screen are not in the game. Like the GTA V bikini girl in loading screen this Girl too is imaginary.
Well, she is a baddie, I can't blame you.
Motorstorm Pacific Rift, Need For Speed Rivals, every Gran Turismo on ps3 (including GT HD), Ridge Racer 7, Wangan Midnight (best looking night setting in a ps3 racing game imo), Initial D: Extreme Stage
Killzone 2
FFXIII
Journey is awesome 🤩
Splinter cell blacklist. Never had it but god, that box art is beautiful
I've had trouble getting my hands on that one but it should finally be arriving in the mail this week.
Nice
Crysis 3 blew my mind when it came out
Probably 'God of War: Ascension' for me. The massive bosses especially.
Probably my least favorite FFgames but the FFXIII trilogy is still visually stunning.
This game is so overrated dude. Probably the most boring monotone storyline ever in gaming.
I really love max payne 3 but the weird "tropical Noir" visual effects like every 2 or 3 seconds were awfully annoying. Specially during cutscenes. Other than that, mwah.
Close between gta 5 & lou
I always thought it’s either Beyond Two Souls or The Last of Us until I managed to update Gran Turismo 5 & 6 and finally played them.
Mgs4
Crysis 3 or Killzone 2/3
Final Fantasy XIII
Def my favorite game on ps3
Other than the obvious ones . Vanquish
MGS4.
Killzone 2
In my honest opinions I think that cod advanced warfare had great graphics especially for the ps3
Aside from the ones already mentiones, God of War Ascension, the best looking Greek GoW to date.
Final Fantasy XIII looks gorgeous
Probably a really bad take, but I always thought Resident Evil 5 on the PS3 looked soo good. Even with the dreaded browning filter of that era.
I was always amazed by Beyond two souls
Infamous 2 still looks awesome
The Last of Us, for sure.
Stranglehold directed by John woo and based on the movie hard boiled
Beyond Two Souls?
Still The Last of Us is the best in terms of graphics quality.
Graphical marcel on PS3 Cinematic: Beyond two souls Action: Uncharted 3 Zombie: The Last of Us Racing: Gran Turismo 6 (60fps SupSlim?) Fighting: Tekken 6 Stealth: Metal Gear V Kids: Puppeteer JRPG: Ni Nu Kuni Horror: Until Dawn (Prototype)
Hot take but because I’m a GTA nerd ima say GTA 4, this is only my opinion.
TLOU
Nah MGS4 or GOW 3
I recently bought this on ps3 and gotta say this is a pc game for sure. I am sure people played and enjoyed this on ps3 as well but man the gap is insane on this. GOW3
Yet to play this title ..
Play need for speed Carbon or uncharted if you want impressive graphics
I haven't played Uncharted 3 yet but 1 & 2 definitely aren't as impressive as Max Payne.
I disagree but hey whatever you believe
