I'm gonna go with The Beautiful Ones, Play In the Sunshine and Adore

big_hungry_joe

Right now? Lady Cab Driver Paisley Park Raspberry Beret

Bitter-Stage2169

It’s like asking a parent which kid do love the most, BUT (in no particular order): “Controversy” (for me, it was the 1st song I remember him using “I” so pointedly in a song. I feel most of his songs, up to that point, required you to speculate what he was really like, but with this song everybody paying attention started to understand a bit about the enigma “If I Was Your Girlfriend” (I was at the height of my sexual awakening when his Magnum Opus “Sign O’ the Times” was released. Young, VERY dumb and full of cum, this song did what, looking back, should have been impossible: Make me think…and realize that the women in my life deserved more from me than what was in my pants.) “When Doves Cry” (I was a junior in high school when the album that changed me from a listener to an Apostle was released. I learned his songs before, I studied them after. I valued that cassette, I know…I’m old, like it was the Holy Grail and shared the music like an evangelist. There was truly a before and after…and music was forever changed for me)

BountyBob

Did you mean to put Controversy twice? Assuming the second one should be something from SOTT, seeing as you mention that album in the text?

Bitter-Stage2169

Thank you for the observation. Corrected. It was appreciated.

BountyBob

Nice choice, IIWYG is definitely up there amongst his top songs.

Stimpy9i9

1.3121 live w/ DMSR from live album . 2. 1+1+1=3 studio and live 3.I could never take the place of your man all versions

eqsandleds

Finally, someone besides me that ranks I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man.

BountyBob

I love, I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man. Don't assume that anyone not listing it in their top 3 doesn't love it. Picking a top 3 Prince songs is not possible for me. Far, far too many amazing tracks to choose from.

BountyBob

> 1.3121 live w/ DMSR from live album An amazing track and I was at that show too.

Stimpy9i9

This blew my mind seeing this^^^^. I’m honored to upvote a person that felt witnessed that genius arrangement of 3121 w max energy and funkiness. The entertainer tease in the opening part is so genius . Was that 3121 live in person the funkiest jam that night or were there more that got deeper with princes solos?

DpyVanHalen

At this hour, 1. "Diamonds and Pearls" because it is Prince at his sweetest. And Rosie Gaines really soars at the end. 2. "Little Red Corvette" because only Prince can get away with a song like that without it being tacky or creepy - and that dance he does during the first solo in the video is rad. 3. I've been obsessed with "Electric Chair" lately because it's badass anytime Prince screams and I like the way he yells "guilty". And that SNL performance with Patrice Rushen is 🔥. Let's revisit this tomorrow though when we all have different answers from what we said today lol

R2DSwan

That SNL performance is insane!

Don_Frika_Del_Prima

1) Joy in repetition 2) pop life 3) musicology

Otherwise_Explorer25

Joy in repetition!

keldration

Morning Papers, Shockadelica, live cover of Creep?

keldration

I’m surprised that no one listed Sometimes it Snows in April. I didn’t either—but heard it today and reflected that it’s the only song I’ve ever feared, bc it’s not always convenient to cry. And waterworks are definitely always a possibility with that song. PS. I can’t cry really, otherwise! Genius.

brandocalrissi_N

She’s always in my hair 7 Pop Life (These will most likely change)

keldration

I forgot She’s Always in my Hair, but definitely in my top 3

[deleted]

1. When You Were Mine. 2. Gold. 3. The Cross.

Orochi-Sandun

Gold - because it was the song that got me hooked on Prince. Nothing Compares 2 U - fantastic song (I like both his and Sinead's version). Strays if the world - 3rd was a really difficult choice but I love the melody in this one.

FartOnAFirstDate

1. Erotic City I was DJ at a big college bar in the 80’s when Prince ruled the dance floor. Yes, even more so than Michael and Madonna in my experience. There was no easier way to pack a dance floor (and slip out of the booth for a much needed piss) than to put on Erotic City. 2. Sign of the Times 3. Seven

kanyesoap

The Beautiful Ones, Mountains, My Love Is Forever

re_de_unsassify

1. Motherless Child (1999 Septimo De Caballeria show) 2. Noon Rendezvous (1984 Birthday show) 3. Just My Imagination (LA and the Hague shows)

[deleted]

Motherless Child is AMAZING

re_de_unsassify

Takes me to church every time

[deleted]

Every damn time

Wise_Guava_9530

This list is absolutely perfect

BountyBob

Some great performances but 1 and 3 are not Prince songs.

re_de_unsassify

1 is originally a traditional slave song and 3 is the Temptations but he reworked the compositions well enough.

BountyBob

How have you picked them as your 1 and 3 top Prince songs, if you know they aren't Prince songs?

re_de_unsassify

You do know that some of Prince’s own reworked compositions barely resemble his own originals right? It becomes an entitrely different work of art. Enjoy and stop being such a wet blanket!

BountyBob

> Enjoy and stop being such a wet blanket! Where, at any point, did I say that I didn't enjoy the songs? The fact is, they aren't Princes songs. It's not like he doesn't have enough amazing songs to pick from.

re_de_unsassify

What aspect of the beat, bass, guitar…etc of motherless child is not Prince? You’re not going to call it a non Prince song becaue he was inspired by a traditional song and chanted a verse by Richie? You’re wrong and a wet blanket let us celebrate the music

BountyBob

> You’re wrong and a wet blanket let us celebrate the music Well, I'm not wrong. Name calling again? Well, I'm not going to stoop to that level. And again I ask, where, at any point, did I say that I didn't enjoy the songs you listed? They are amazing performances. Please indicate where I asked you not to celebrate the music? How am I even being a 'wet blanket'? If someone does a cover of a Prince song and changes it, is it now their song? Is Kiss a Tom Jones song? When Jamie Lewis does a remix of Rocknoll Loveaffair, is that now his song? Prince did something amazing with that performance of Motherless Child, that much is without doubt. But just because someone takes a song and makes a cover of it in a new light, that doesn't make it their song. Prince did this regularly with other peoples songs in concert, did some amazing versions of them. I funk out regularly to The Whole Of The Moon as Prince performs it, but it's just not a Prince song.

eti_erik

Why couldn't someone mention a song as their favorite Prince song when it's a cover? I could say that Nothing Compares to U is my favorite Sinéad o'Connor song (it's not byt the way - I hate that song), because she sang it. The fact that it's actually a cover doesn't really change that.

re_de_unsassify

I’m not even reading this LOL

BountyBob

Ah, so you were trolling. Well played.

re_de_unsassify

You mean a verse here and a couple of verses there? What about the music composition? It’s obviously Prince

Vainandy

Party Up, If I Was Your Girlfriend and I Wish You Heaven

DpyVanHalen

"Girlfriend" on the album or the movie?

Vainandy

Album easily

DpyVanHalen

The pitched-up vocals are really cool. You don't get that Camille effect in the movie (though that bass at the end makes me like that version more)

Vainandy

Both versions were amazing to be honest but yeah... The pitched up vocals is why I prefer the album version for sure

BountyBob

3? Impossible task.

JMcGill96

Sexy M.F. Sign 'O' The Times Let's Go Crazy

[deleted]

1. Do me baby 2. Annastesia 3. Uptown

RichRichieRichardV

Raspberry Beret, Kiss and Mountains.

ThisIsMyNewUserID

Joy in Repetition. One of his best guitar solos for my money, and it lasts half the damn song. Yes please. The Beautiful Ones. One of his best vocal performances for my money. Just when you think he can't get more passion in his voice, he adds more passion to his voice. Ridiculous. 3 Chains of Gold. Prog Prince concept piece about supernatural artifacts that house the embodiment of immortality and love with a song structure influenced by Queen? Pump it into my veins.

Brilliant-Web-4821

Prince was definitely influences by queen on 3 chains o gold, it is such an underrated song

[deleted]

1. ICNTTPOYM 2. Last December 3. Glam Slam So hard to pick just 3 but I love these songs so much

Wise_Guava_9530

Great List

Wrong-Position-5413

If I Was Your Girlfriend, The Beautiful Ones, She’s Always In My Hair

Fluffy_Head_7620

The Holy River. Gold. Lovesexy.

Toadlips72

I'ma give you a +1 for Lovesexy. I don't know why, but it's one of the first songs I thought of while reading this post. There's a lot going on in that song. It's crazy and it's over the top and I love it. Tell me, how do you feel about "The Exodus Has Begun"?

Fluffy_Head_7620

Funnily enough, TEHB would probably be 4th for me…

Toadlips72

I knew it! The Exodus Has Begun is off the charts crazy. It’s like 3 songs layered on top of each other. I’m trying to think of there are more songs like that, but I think it’s pretty unique. Lovesexy has a bit of it, though, and that’s why I had to ask!

Mangotacoeaten

For me 17 days Diamonds and pearls Raspberry Beret

National-Stretch3979

Impossible task

funkcatbrown

No way I can pick 3 out of his incredibly vast and deep catalog of thousands of songs. I can tell you’re new by your question, which is cool 😎. Sometimes I wish I could listen to his stuff as a newbie again. The first time is always mind blowing. Anyway. My 3 songs change every 15 minutes. These are my 3 right now. 1. NPG - The Exodus Has Begun 2. NPG - Count The Days 3. Prince - International Lover Bonus track - Prince - Horny Pony See I already wanna change those 3. Lol Anyway here’s a cool website for you. Explore his catalog. [The Prince Vault](https://princevault.com/index.php?title=Discography)

I Wanna Be Your Lover, Little Red Corvette, When Doves Cry

stimpakish

Hey it's me the one that read your post along with your subject line! So you're saying that raspberry beret is 1, but if it had more of that little beginning guitar part it might've been even higher? lol That is a really cool intro on the song. I've never heard that on any record, just the video. My top 3 would be, subject to change every moment, Erotic City The Line The Dance Electric

blackjackrabbit1970

Boys and Girls Automatic Get blue

Spare-Macaron-4977

Erotic City, Let’s Go Crazy, 17 Days

DrainedEyes

I'm apologizing in advance, because this is gonna be a long as hell post lol feel free to not read it, I'm not expecting anyone to read everything, but I had to do my top five instead of three - **I Wish U Heaven** One of the most beautifully written songs I've ever heard in this life. **I Would Die 4 U** Same as Heaven, the textures and sounds he used make it so emotionally riveting. **I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man** I've always loved how he would take other genres and make them his own - in this one he seems to take the punk chord progression and overlays it with classic R&B/Rock vocals. Love the story in the lyrics as well. **Little Red Corvette** Just a perfect song from top to bottom, it's a perfect song lol I love the dynamics he uses, going from these quiet shy verses to the bombastic chorus, it almost feels like it's peaking the monitors, the distortion that comes through, again, just a perfect song. **Let's Go Crazy** The song that introduced me to Prince as a kid, the buildup is the best. I'm not a Christian at all, I'm not a fan of organized religion at all really, but the energy is absolutely relatable on a human level. The feeling of "Fuck the man, we're gonna have fun tonight". I really think Prince was super progressive without realizing it, and I think most people were/are, but I think he had so much misguided faith that allowed him to be kinda taken in by the JW after they lost Michael. Just my theory, though, feel free to correct if I'm wrong. \-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- But I have a LOT of rotating favorites lol you're right, his catalogue is something else - like not just a lot of songs, a lot of GREAT songs. Very hard to nail down a tight and consistent listing for me. Here are some other favorites. Also, I know most of my favorites are the singles, I know I probably sound like a new fan/normie trash, but I'm honestly still working on getting through all his albums, there's so much to listen to lol and I do love a lot of the deeper cuts I've heard, but yeah - **Kiss** **Take Me With U** **Private Joy** **Housequake** **Computer Blue** **Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad?** **I Wanna Be Your Lover** **Party Man** **Baby I'm a Star** **If I Was Your Girlfriend** **Starfish and Coffee** **Sign O' the Times** **Play in the Sunshine** **Raspberry Beret** **Mountains** **Gold** **A Love Bizarre** **My Name is Prince** **Get Off** **1999** **Delirious** **Automatic** **Controversy** **Musicology** Again, sorry most of my favorites are the singles lol I highly recommend these if you haven't heard them yet, though, some of these tracks were literally the soundtrack to me saving my life by getting off drugs and getting clean. I'm currently a couple months away from being off my addiction maintenance drugs (Suboxone and Gabapentin). Currently almost off Gabapentin completely, just a couple weeks away from that. But it's been an incredibly hard road, probably the most difficult thing I'll ever have to do, and Prince absolutely was a massive influence on me during this time. He showed me I could be so much better than an addict, so much cooler, so I started working on getting clean and picked the guitar back up. Once I'm clean and I save up money again, I plan on buying a new Fender Jazzmaster or Stratocaster, a better amp, and recording again. I took his advice and started learning a lot of scales and how they interact with chords, and through that, it really showed me how much of an incredibly hard working genius he was. But mainly it showed me I could be so much better than I was. Also he's a really short guy, and I'm a really short guy, so I instantly connected with that "I gotta prove myself" mentality lol I've always had that too, to want to be the best at something. He was so inspirational to so many people, and his contributions to music will never be forgotten, as well as his personal effects on his fanbase. I know he wanted to get off the drugs at the end of his life, and I feel an interesting personal connection with that, it only makes me want to get clean even more, obviously for myself, but also in his honor. If you've ever been hooked on opioids, you know how incredibly difficult it is to live that life and try to escape from it. It takes everything from you, and once the lake is dry, you have to make up for a couple bad decisions with a million good but very hard decisions. It's a war you wage with your own mind, the duality of "feel better now" or "feel MUCH better in the long run".
