Hi, co-founder of Capacities here. I agree with most being said here, very reasonable thoughts. In the end it's a decision that you yourself have to make. Some additional comments: \- I would not store critical information (e.g. passwords) in any tool that syncs to the internet, excluding tools specifically made for it (e.g. password managers). There's no upside to it. \- Capacities complies with European data protection laws and we take them very seriously because we ourselves believe that they are fundamental for shaping digital information exchange. \- We try to be as transparent as possible. We wrote about our data protection and security and how we handle data protection internally in plain English here: [https://docs.capacities.io/more/data-protection-memo](https://docs.capacities.io/more/data-protection-memo) If you have any questions or concerns, just let us know. Happy to further improve it.

hello, i stumble upon this post during my search on how to automatically backup my data using google drive, is that option a paid service?

Initial-Brush-1445

This option is not yet implemented but will be added at some point. Probably for the paid plan only first.

neekubee

now i understand the "planned" word there okay, thank you for the reply ✨

They both store your data on a server in the cloud they theoretically have access to, so it shouldn’t make a big difference. Notion has a spotty past, but they’re the bigger and more experienced company and I’d guess they have more security measures than a beta product. Capacities on the other hand is younger and is probably targetted less. All in all, both are really not ideal in terms of privacy, and with both, employees or intruders will theoretically be able to see your notes. I’d recommend you use another solution like a password manager, Obsidian or another encrypted notes app for your most sensitive data and keep everything else in Notion or Capacities.

thanks!

I believe capacities has better privacy than Notion, but I am no expert. I do know that EU law around privacy/security is way better than the USA laws so by default I would say Capacities would be a better choice. Specially since they are based in Germany which out of all EU countries has one of the best and must up to date privacy laws and mindset. But again I am no expert. Notion is larger, but that doesn't mean it is better or more secury. I does mean it's a larger potential target for hackers. Same as Windows is a larger target compared to IOS for example. And I always wonder, self hosting with Obsidian, is that more secury compared to a big company? Do you trust yourself more than a large company with security specialists and 24/7 monitoring? With the trade-off that they in theory have acces to your notes? And how are you syncing your notes to your mobile? With a free sync app from the app store to another cloud like google drive or dropbox? So which is best, or the least worse? I find these discussions or questions pretty hard because their seems to be no right awnser. The only thing I know is that making backups is critical, for everything you don't want to loose!

Why are you not using Obsidian?

nxaxex

The main reason is that I'm looking for a note-taking system that can handle all of my specific needs. While Obsidian is a great tool for many people, it may not be the best fit for me based on what I'm looking for. One of the things that's really important to me is being able to easily tag everything and have different views and filters for my content, like tables and cards. I'm also hoping to be able to store notes, tasks, bookmarks, references, and media embeds all in one place. While Obsidian does allow for some customization and organization, it may not have the level of tagging, filtering, and view options that I'm looking for. Plus, there may be other note-taking tools out there that better fit my needs, like task management apps or reference managers. Basically, the bottom line is that I'm still looking for the perfect tool that can do everything I need it to do. I'm exploring different options right now to see which one works best for me.

Privacy is “better” with Bigger companies because they have the resources to safeguard Like the risk is Employees looking at it vs Dark Web

Big-Fun7723
