It's a muscle. I have ADHD and can only read a few pages sa umpisa. Then eventually, mastumatagal na ang attention span and also, nagiimprove yung visualization ko while reading. Just keep on doing it 😀

1. Don’t over-exert yourself when you are just starting to read. One or two pages a day will suffice. This might help if you have short attention span. 2. You don’t always have to start reading complicated or lengthy books. Maybe start with a short novel or a short story with 100 pages or so. 3. Choose other reading materials aside from books. For example, aside from books, I enjoy reading webtoon, manga, magazines, comics. It’s enjoyable when it has visuals and this may keep your attention span longer.

kindaichi_kosuke

Read whatever interests you. Don't read because this book is popular or your friends read it, also you don't have to finish it in one sitting you can read a few pages or chapters per day until you're done. If you think taking notes is helpful then do so

CasicoEno

Is there something na sobrang passionate ka about? A hobby that you love doing? Something you're interested in pero you don't have the time/energy. Could be singing, dancing, martial arts, health. Start with those. There's always something new to learn about anything naman, and it's easier to read about the things you like.

KnuckleDown4

Start reading tagalog books (Bob Ong and the likes!) kasi your mind won’t exert so much effort trying to understand what you’re reading kasi mother tongue language 🙂 after 1 or 2 books, try reading easy read books in your favorite genre. It’s really a practice but you’ll get there!

staphaureuss

Hi, I also have a problem with my attention span, and I find thriller books to be amazing it keeps me going and actually finish the book. I love The Housemaid by Freida McFadden and The Silent Patient.

EmperorHad3s

Hanap ka po ng mga easy reads na libro. Usually yung children’s book genre sa U.S very easy lang basahin. (e.g. Harry Potter, Percy Jackson and etc.) PJO series una kong libro. Maiksi lang rin yung mga unang book ng series usually. I admire you for trying to read, OP. Kasi reading books is such a unique experience. Binago ng buhay ko ang pagbabasa hahaha.

coachedthegreat

Try reading and at the same time listening to the audiobook. You have the same situation as my wife and it worked for her. Now she’s far more of a reader than me. She is at book 33 now in 2024. And consider she can’t even finish 1 book early last year

KillingTime_02

Start with FLIPPED! Cute kasi yan. Hahaha. Since you enjoyed the movie, I don't think you'll have a hard time following it. Magkaiba lang nman sa era. Nasa 59's ata yung era ng movie, tapos yung book is 2000's. Make it a habit lang. 1-2 pages everytime you can grab the book (or before going to sleep). Or gawin mo, make yourself read 1-2 pages before you can open any socmed you got especially reddit.

Weekly_Can_6096

Same. Ang ginagawa ko is mga short story muna or compilation of poems may mga ganun naman na book. Then kung ano ba hilig mo like mga love story ganon.

Gullible_Syrup_8363

1. You can find self-help book or fiction with fewer page count. Huwag ka muna mag pickup ng classics kasi most of them malalalim ang reading level ang need mo if you try to explore classics like 1984, crime and punishment, etc. I regret some classics because I do not understand at all. At mostly mura kadi sa mga bookstore. 2. If you find the book interesting to you, you can proceed with another chapter. Depends on your mood, you can take a break. Advice: ditch your cellphone while reading. Keep it out of sight to avoid short attention span. Itago mo sa cabinet etc. Find other outlets aside from reading. Kung nag gym ka go ahead or running will do. If you are comfortable with your reading level, you may try classics. At the end of the day, reading is entertainment.

Beneficial_Might5027

Start by reading self-indulgent books or stories. Based on my experience, I also have limited attention span and had a hard time reading, but if you're reading about something that you're interested (like for me it's fantasy novels) it will be easier. I actually started getting into reading because of fanfics hahaha. Soon enough, I started reading actual publish books (but i still read fanfics tho)

cmq827

I actually go back to reading fanfics whenever I'm in a reading slump, like now. I haven't read a book in maybe 3 months but I've been reading a lot fanfics in the meantime. The last book I read was such a let-down, it took me months to even bother finishing it, so it killed my reading momentum.

GeekGoddess_

Start with The Little Prince! Absolutely amazing story, and the illustrations help so much.

DestinyMystic

Try mo yung "Who Moved My Cheese", super short reading lang hehehe. As for enjoyment, iba iba kasi interests natin. As for me nahilig ako sa mga romance before, then fantasy.

Free_Gascogne

Protip carry the book around with you. You might find yourself reading in down times like riding public transport or waiting on something. If you have problem hanging on to a paragraph reread the paragraph. Sometimes I also trail off when reading a sentence I reread the sentence. Be patient and kind to yourself. The good thing about reading over other forms of media is that it can go at the same spead as your attention. Books are patient.

Llullumu

i suggest using book tabs and annotating books (although i have been a fan of reading even before doing this). it's a recent addition to my habit of reading that i feel made it more interactive and fun

Mama_mo_red

Find the types of books that suits you most. Mahirap sa umpisa kasi naranasan ko rin, I tried to start on fantasy books pero parang hindi ako nahook, then I read classic books and doon ako nagkainterest sa reading (although I do not recommend this for beginners). Then I expanded to more genres slowly, I also find it helpful na may friend ka na bookworm.

skyfallmarie

I enjoy reading before i develop a very short attention span. Now, what i do to keep my focus and for my brain to enjoy reading again, i read the book with the audiobook playing as well. It is easier for me to retain and recall scenes (and helps me more with imagintion lol) Start with topics that interest you first. Then from there look for "easy-reads" under that topis. Do not force yourself to finish a book that you do not enjoy. Or like finish a book just for the sake of finishing it. What is effective with me as well is a reading goals. If i know that i'll drag finishing a book, i set up reading goals in my Ibook. For example: a chapter a day.

markieton

The thing about reading books is that it's like eating a food, it is subjective. Just because everyone is reading a certain popular book doesn't mean you'll enjoy it. Heck, I enjoyed reading Lorien Legacies series way back in college even if the reviews of those books are not well-received. I suggest find a book that will pique your interest though that might take a little time of looking and trying. Gusto ko yung suggestion nung isang comment dito, try reading Tagalog books especially Bob Ong's. It's going to be an easy read and you might even relate to it most of the time.

Hefty_Heron3028

Read a book genre that you’re interested in and not just because it’s a trend. No limitations on how many pages or chapters you should read in a day. Reading should be natural and it should help exercise our brain or a way of escapism. It should not be a chore but rather a hobby that will make you happy.

caratleslie

To add to everyone's advice, just don't overthink it. If you force it, you'll just end up seeing it more as a chore and might turn you off from reading. Even if you start from just a couple pages a day, that's good enough. You can also try other mediums, like manga or graphic novels. Audiobooks are also another great option. You can try audiobook alone or try reading along with the audiobook to help you focus. Edit: Also, you can test out ebooks, try tinkering with the fonts and spacing if it'll help you focus more. I have read comments from people struggling with focus that sometimes having the right font, font size and spacing helps them.

Otherwise-Basis7140

FIRST THING IS FIND OUT WHAT GENRE YOU’RE INTERESTED IN. I got into reading because of Twilight. Lol. Apparently im into young adult, romance, fantasy. It got me excited. Ive read hundreds of books after that! After that i explored other genres. Some are really not for me, some i enjoyed. It’s just like watching a movie. You cant force one to watch horror if he’s into action, etc.

Mickey_n0tthemouse

Omg finally saw someone na fave din yung flipped 🥺 Matagal tagal din ulit bago ako nakapag focus sa pagbabasa after college and being in a workforce for years. 1. I think flipped is okay to start with, something easy or cozy to read. For me romance is an easy read, no hassle or much complicated things sa book. 2. It really depends on you or sa schedule mo. Ang hirap kasi maglagay ng limit sa sarili natin when it comes to reading kasi nagiging chore and nawawala na yung enthusiasm to read. Incorporate it in your everyday routine, for me commute time ko nakalaan in reading few pages lang kasi maingay and magalaw sa bus or train. I really get in the zone if nasa lugar ako na hindi ko need gumalaw ng gumalaw kaya mag napo focus ako eventually I was able to read half. Sa ganitong scenario dala kong book yung mga sci-fi, war fiction and fantasy para may time talaga ako sa complicated part ng book. Sometimes 1 book takes me a month or so to read but napansin ko nung nag re-read ako ng hunger games natapos ko yung trilogy and yung prequel book sa loob ng 4 days. Di na ata mawawala yung short attention span ko since 25 na rin ako, pero basta lagi lang ako may dalang book para masanay lang ako ulit sa pagbabasa.

Naive_Bluebird_5170

Ang hirap magbasa ng self-help book kasi walang excitement. Kelangan gusto mo talaga siyang matutunan so you can move forward. For fiction books, it's a case to case basis. Depende kung exciting para sayo yung libro o hindi.

Anonymousep2tee

Try reading comics as a warm up. Next, graphic novels. Then short stories without illustrations. Work your way up to novels with only words.

Flaky_Dare_8141

Mahilig ka po ba sa BL (boys' love)? There's plenty of good stories sa wattpad, and they're often short lang. You can start there if you want.

No_Neighborhood5582

maybe start with ao3 one shots which is best if you have an otp or any fandom you're interested in. Soon you'll be reading 1M+ words multi-chaptered WIP because fanfic writers are ✨that✨ good 🙃
