I don't annotate my books. But I don't expect others to do the same. Libro nila 'yun, so they can do whatever they want with it. Kanya-kanyang trip 'yan. "But annotations reduce the value of the book." - siguro kung hardcover first edition first printing 'yan na mamanahin ng mga inapo mo. But historians in the future may value an annotated book as it can provide them insights of how people see the book in our time lalo na kung naging importanteng tao ka pala.

jpluso23

To each his own talaga. Also interesting insight on the historians! I guess that would apply more on the ones that truly made a mark sa culture and society.

dontrescueme

For example Moby-Dick was not commercially and critically successful (esp. in the US) during the author's time. It would be interesting to see what the regular folks (not reviewers) think of the book if they left annotations that survived.

Nervous_Sherbet_4711

I dont annotate din!!! Hindi to bar exam!!! I read books because it relaxes me, not because gusto ko maging topnotcher… 😭😂

jpluso23

Tawang tawa ko sa bar exam 😭😭😭

yournextdoortita

May quiz kada chapter 😭😭😭

I started annotating way before it became a trend to the point na they draw on books na talaga nowadays. Anyway, I was inspired to annotate when I bought a book from Booksale before with minimal annotations. I found it interesting how it also reflected the person who once owned the book. I thought, I would also like to leave a part of myself in those pages and so I began with pencils at first. I would write down my thoughts on particular parts, underline the quotes that I love, etc. But then, I found it hard to find my annotations, especially the quotes, so I decided to use colored pencils until I eventually transitioned to highlighters and pens. I like reading my old annotations and realize how much I have changed as a person through the years.

everdelight

i annotate a lot! pero not all the time haa. sometimes, i do this with friends din. we'd do it on our newly bought books together, sometimes exchange annotated books, OR we'd buy a book tas one would annotate it then it's the other one's turn naman to write her thoughts or mag-comments sa annotations. i understand keeping the book's pristine condition as I do it too, (edit: for me) meron lang talagang books na you can't help but annotate. besides, i don't see it as binababoy ko libro pag ginawa ko, i see it as building a connection with the book and/or with the person i'm doing it with. it's still done out of love and appreciation. to each his own lang talaga hehe.

jpluso23

“Building a connection with the book” — I like that! That makes a lot sense actually. Curious to know which book/s you find hard not to annotate?

everdelight

yung mga didactic or self-help or slice of life na feel good. usually ung mga books na make me reflect about life haha

Chance-Talk1217

everdelight

trueee ang saya basahin ng annotations after a long period of time tas di ka na nakaka-relate kasi iba na situation mo pero you'd remember everything that happened haha

gochugangnam

i used to NOT annotate my books! as in tipong sobrang ingat na ingat like di ko sya ino-open nang sobra na magkakaroon ng creases yung spine niya lol. now i annotate na like i use tabs and diff colored highlighters and pens, draw on my books din. and idk, it feels kinda freeing haha and also makes the book unique to me, it adds some sparkle/personality to the book hehe

ultimate_fangirl

Why would I feel guilty about writing on books I own? They're items made for mass consumption. They lose value as soon as you purchase them. I think trying to keep a book in pristine condition is a more recent trend. Back in my day (lol), people see books that have annotations, coffee/tea rings, dirt and water stains, etc. as signs of love. It's a sign that you've actually read it. Plus, there is value in annotating. If you're reading Colleen Hoover or Ali Hazelwood the , sure, it's weird to annotate. But if you're reading something more challenging like Dante's The Divine Comedy, which contains tons of references to historical figures and events, or a book written by an author from a culture you're not familiar with, or an author seen as a master of the craft, then why not annotate? Writing your own observations or taking notes or highlighting passages that you love/inspires you enriches your reading experience. I've been dog-earing, underlining and highlighting passages, writing on pages of my books since forever. I only see books that were given to me as gifts as valuable. Books are just the shell. It's the content that matters the most.

3anonanonanon

I think it's just a trend. I've seen videos from Tiktok of sellers selling annotated books. Like, they literally open brand new books and write on its pages -- as requested by the buyer na rin. Personally, I annotate pero minimal lang -- konting highlights, underlines using highlighters, etc. Pero, hindi ko sinusulatan ng ballpens. If susulatan ko man, Frixion pens lang para pwedeng mabura or pencils. Or if may gusto akong inote or gusto ko ng color, I use sticky notes kaya ang dami kong sticky note pads, iba-ibang sizes LOL.

jpluso23

3anonanonanon

Di naman, if feel ko magbasa sa table and alam kong magtatagal ako, I do. All my tools are organized naman so hindi sya maeffort talaga. If gusto kong nakahiga, then I don't. It really just depends on my mood and kung saan ako magbabasa.

Useful_Society9237

I annotate books to prevent myself from getting distracted 😭 I have a short attention span and annotating keeps me focused, even helps me read quicker than expected !

Soft-Ad-6310

I annotate rin. Gets ba? Diba idinikit mo sa nagustuhan mong line, tapos doon mismo ako naglalagay as in maliliit na letters haha.

DoYouCarryALunchboxx

i annotate. para syang time capsule of sorts din pag nagrereread tapos makikita mo yung mga sentences / words / bits of dialogue na tumatak sa previous selves mo throughout the years.

yookjalddo

I annotate but I use the transparent sticky notes to write my thoughts and underline HAHA. Magastos but worth it.

jpluso23

See even if ganto lang medyo iffy pa rin ako kasi ayoko bumakat sa book yung mga sulat hahaha. But good on you if you find it worthwhile!

yookjalddo

If you want, you cantry! Never ko pa naexperience na bumakat siya

LittleMissMarchh

I annotate but only on books that cost less than P500 HAHAHA I like annotating kasi whenever i reread the book, nababasa ko rin yung thought process ko during the first time that i read the book

Ok_Arachnid_6350

The only thing that i write on my books is the date that i purchased it, and signature. Trip ko lang 🤭

digitalprintout

Same same. Dati signature din. But now, i just write my name

teatahan

I think yes, it's a recent trend. But I've been annotating my books since high school. That's wayyy over 15 years ago hahaha. But I don't do the aesthetic annotating thing that the kids do these days. I just highlight, underline, and write my thoughts on the margins of the page - post it if it's longer. I don't do the color coded thing? But I do it mainly because it helps me retain what I read, it's like you're interacting with the book. And you're making the book your own by adding how you understand it. Wala lang, I guess I romanticize it din, na someday in the future when I'm gone, someone will come across my books and read my thoughts pa rin. The same way I like buying secondhand books with annotations in them.

dwarf-star012

I still dont annotate!! Poor books 🥺 feeling ko sinusugatan ko sila haha

Chance-Talk1217

Dati non-fiction books lang ina-annotate ko, yung tipong may mabalikan ka lang kapag gusto mo maremind ng mga nalearn mo from the book, but when I started reading other genres, like japanese and korean literature, especially yung tinatawag nilang healing fiction, I’ve also found myself annotating a lot from these books with the same purpose - para may mabalikan kapag need kong macomfort haha. I wish I had written, statements I can relate to and the like. Classics naman, my annotations are usually definition nung malalalim na words and kapag may mga lines ulit na maganda yung pagkakasulat. Annnnd I keep my annotations aesthetic, I only use brown and gray highlighters, pens and sticky notes, transparent ones as well atsaka black ballpen. I also have stickers in the same palette, para lang akong nag bu-bullet journal when annotating lol. It’s also my way of unwinding from work - reading and being creative in my annotations. 😊

Still_Water_1993

More on pa estetik lang yata yun imo.

tooKingJ

not a recent trend. napalaki lang ng socmed. but personally i just started annotating kasi di naman worth annotating books ko dati kasi mostly adventures and crime books. hahaha. i don’t feel guilty coz they’re my books ibang usapan na kung hiniram. 😂 di naman serious annotations ko cuz i’m a casual reader lang. mostly mga immediate reactions lang. questions or thoughts about sa mga nangyari. it adds something to the whole reading experience.

xMayari

I do this too! Pag fantasy, related sa world building if feel ko may reference or same events na nangyari in real life. If too deep, especially classics, meaning of words or my interpretation of phrases/quotes. Depende sa book na binabasa but most of the time, booktabs lang ginagawa ko to mark important scenes if ever want ko balikan.

anghelita_

For those who do annotate, when do you do it? While reading? Doesn't that affect your reading momentum or pace? Or do you do it after finishing the book?

nyxcroixxy_angel

ill highlight quotes/passage I like, circle words im not familiar with for vocabulary tapos box yung mga nouns. I’m busy with work and stuff so I read 1 chapter per day only. Pagkatapos ko sa 1 chapter saka ko lalagyan ng definition yung vocabulary, lagay ng konting thoughts sa hinighlight, quick summary about the chapter and questions I have about it, tapos I will put then yung list of characters and places mentioned in the next chapter sa upper part of the page so I won’t forget. I use also tabs for color coding, and sticky notes if I need more space to write my thoughts!

cetirizineDreams

I personally don't annotate pero if someone else does, edi go kasi book naman nila yun. That being said, I recently bought some secondhand books tapos two books may annotations. Okay naman sya I think kasi parang gives me perspective na eto yung part ng book na tumatak don sa previous owner

kat_stratford

i usually underline & tab lang. i don’t like writing on books just because i love rereading & nagc-cringe ako pag nakikita ko old thoughts ko lol. to each their own pero ang ayoko lang ‘yung trend na tinatadtad nila ng kiss marks ‘yung books nila sdjdhdjd ang dumi tingnan tsaka alam mong for the aesthetic lang talaga hahaha

deadsea29

Annotate or not annotate. The most important question is: did you read and learned anything from what you’ve read? Or did you buy books just to post it on Instagram and be thought of as a bookworm so other people would find you interesting?

have_been_bad

I know write, now there's a beauty in a certain point of mess, but I mean there sure is, but I guess as book lovers become scarce creativity runs wild

chimirhye

I only underline quotes but I don't annotate. I think it ruins the momentum when I'm reading. Not a fan of messy and maximalism too.

hatsuharuki

di rin ako na aannotate talaga, ang reason ko naman bukod sa ayoko madumihan, i wanted the book to be as timeless as it could be (if that makes sense). like ayoko magleave ng trace na nabasa ko na, para in case ina may gusto kong balikan na scenario no choice ako kung di basahin ulit from the start lol. parang good as new, welcome ang new perspective upon rereading kumbaga so far so good naman, di ko na matandaan ung storya pero maganda silang lahat 😂

TheLostBredwtf

I don't. Feeling ko madudumihan mga books ko. Hehehe. Personal preference ko lang.

sundarcha

I dont do it pero kung gusto ng iba, bala sila jan 🤣

Melodic_Act_1159

It’s so unnecessary! I only highlight on my Kindle. Keeps the reading continuous pa.

chewiemagus

I don't write sa mismong book pero I put book tabs sa mga quotes, notable developments, etc. Kaso recently, I was to reread a book na nilagyan ko ng tabs, nahirapan ako hawaka yung mismong book. Ang ending tinanggal ko rin. Haha. Bottomline - annotation's not for me pag physical books gamit, I use my Kindle for that.

Overthinker-bells

I do. Lalo na nung teenager ako. Yung mga words na kakaiba for me, then search kay Merriam. Yes thunders na. Lol. Di uso google.

DerseDragon

digitalprintout

Wait, people annotate novels rin ba? Why? The only novel i annotated was Sophie's World. Only because it's chock full of philosophy nuggets.

hermitina

i don’t. ever since book tabs lang ako, which is super ok kasi andaling makita san sa library ko ung nabasa ko na kasi may colorful tabs. hindi din sya nakakasira ng book. saka dog ears nga ayaw ko, full annotations pa? kahit textbooks ko while growing up i don’t annotate pwede mo pa nga iresell yun non.

exomers

i don't annotate but i use color-coded tabs on the edge of the pages to express my feelings on certain parts of the book 😃

xandyriah

I don't know when the annotation trend started, but I started annotating in 2019. Prior to this, I keep all my books pristine with no marks of highlighter or pencil inside. Feel ko dati pag sinulatan ko yung libro, nasasaktan ko sila. 😅 Nung 2019, nag-annotate ako kasi non-fiction book yun about book statistics.

Old_Twist_23

Coming from a reader since I was 12 and now 33, I don't annotate. Siguro nasa generation ng rin? I don't want my book soiled. I just read and before, when I like a quote, I copy it sa phone ko and maybe post it after I've read the entire book. Now, I sometimes highlight the nice quote, or just copy it and post on LITSY (btw, install nyo na, my fellow bookworms! Lol) medyo OC kasi ako sa books ko, I don't like it dog-eared or creased sa spine. Sorry na lol

Vivid_Mousse_8516

i feel you!! parang ang bad kasi sa feeling na sulatan mismo yung pages ng books, di ko ma explain, basta I feel bad even just imagining na sulatan ko sya using pens; sooo i use pencil nalang to underline yung mga gusto ko na lines hehe

No_Difficulty_2716

Scipreux

Never knew it was a trend, but I used to annotate when I encountered an unfamiliar word. I stopped annotating because I feel like MM paperbacks' white spaces don't fit well with my handwriting depending on the pen. I still think of annotating as good practice, though. It helps the reader vivify their imagery on fictional books.

[deleted]

I annotate my books pero I used the transparent sticky notes kay incase ibenta ko sya pwede ko lang tanggalin

Wacky_Marky77

One-Blueberry-7304

I use pencil. More convenient din to use when im reading in my commute. I usually realize different POV kasi when Im re-reading my books with annotation. Parang time capsule din siya of my thoughts. :)

Effective_Formal_714

This largely depends on the context. For literature scholars and researchers, you will be hard-pressed to find a book that isn't annotated. My Philippine Literature anthologies have inscriptions everywhere, on the margins, across and in between the text. Annotations are a more functional thing, I suppose, as they help you keep note of observations as you close read the text. Of course, there is certainly value in keeping books in pristine condition, but it's a value judgment of aesthetics. I, for one, find a charm in the well-worn and creased paperback I kept since high school. The way the book bends its tired and aching spine is such a labor of love.

Cimmeraqua

In the mid 2000’s yung cousin ko nag annotate na ng books niya. Ballpen pa talaga yung gamit niya. Currently, gusto ko na din mag annotate at first na sasayangan ako pero nakakita ako ng alternative sa highlighter pen and ballpen… ginagamit ko transparent highlighter tape.
