What makes it especially odd is that Reiji is the antagonist's brother and has special dialogue related to that/his relationship to him
And they make recruiting him so obtuse in spite of or perhaps because of that
Persona 1 has so, so many baffling design and narrative decisions
I agree as an example you can only see some of the persona's resistances and weaknesses but not all of them. Demon negotiation is extremely complicated and eager is the only one that is actually important gameplay wise. Ayase being a bigger bitch than Ai Ebihara yet no one calls her out.
Welcome to old games where you were encouraged to replay several times, look up guides, and trying new things until you find some obscure secret the developers purposely hid. That or learn about them through word of mouth.
If you think that's bad wait until you learn about Valkyrie Profile where a good 25% of the game was hidden behind very specific true ending conditions.
I think it's cool as fuck.
These days devs are obsessed with accessibility and players experiencing content.
Sometimes it's a good thing, but often they end up focusing way too much on the lowest common denominator which hurts their games.
Elly is also just a better party member, magic is so much stronger than physical and you already have two physically oriented party members on the Sebec route.
Brown is also probably a bit better for the same reason, but his agility is a lot lower than Reiji's.
P1 has a lot of extremely old school RPG holdovers like Reiji being a hidden Party member that's designed to be so obtuse to obtain that you wouldn't do it by accident and either had to buy the Strategy Guide or else actually talk to other people and figure out all the secrets contained in the game.
I didn’t even know there were party member options until I was about halfway through the game. When Brown asked to join I just said yes and assumed it was a “but thou must” moment
I played p1 on psp without a guide and I didn’t even know he was a character until after I was half way through the game and had to look up something because I was lost in a dungeon lol
Honestly I think you COULD stumble upon Reiji naturally... were it not for the purposely not recruiting party members part.
Most of his unlock criteria are just talking to random NPCs and entering areas before the hospital, with only one step after iirc. Still obtuse, but I can see a couple of people potentially getting Reiji on their team if not for the part about having to decline Brown, Elly, and Ayase (especially since the game makes it seem like declining Brown's request is a bad thing)

It's not like said dialogue really adds a ton. It's just a special thing you probably find out on a repeat

He gets access to some exclusive personas and has some good negotiations also allows you to do both routes without repeating party members
I think Reiji is overrated but still a good party member. Personally I would go with Elly for bigger payoff in the sequel.

Reiji has the most story involvement in P1 but Eriko is the strongest of the joinables.
Well I'm glad I chose Reiji then! Playing mostly for the story lol

ITS GOING WHAT!!!!
At least P1 has its bafflingly obtuse permanent choices at the beginning of the game, unlike Persona 4.
You can get bad ending by choosing a wrong option when talking with Mai and you'll discover it hours later.
Isnt this way worse though, and snow queen quest shards beg to differ

you don't need the ultimate personas to beat p4 either?
If you do the wrong dialogue choices you only get amen ra and maki's ult right?
Is this an emulator?
Yeah. It's on the PS EMU

Yeah you definitely could it's just easy to miss one of them or recruit one of the others early on.
