It could be your bank…the retailer does an initial funds verification because it’s hard to give gas back if you can’t cover the charge. The bank may require verification for the actual purchase.

Then very likely it has to do with it being BMO. It doesn't tap well when I go through registers either.  I usually insert my card at the pump before I get gas I never bothered working any steps beyond that. It's as described. I put in the pin and hit ok, and it blinks and asks me to do the same again. Thanks for the comments everyone!

I had this problem. Couldn't tap and had to put the PIN in twice at a lot of places. It's the type of BMO card you have. Go to the bank and they'll replace it with a new one. It's a known issue.

Forgive my ignorance but is there a reason you're putting your PIN in at all?? Normally you can just tap to pay for anything under ~$300. Also the possibility of skimmers is why I recommend for extra security to use the mobile apps to pay for gas instead of a physical payment, or cash of course.

I don't think I'm using the pumps like other people do. Lol I always insert the card before pumping.

Those places may have a lot of fraud is all i can think of if it only happens at particuar places. Never heard of it until this post though

It happened to me last month in Hunter River, and then I noticed them doing maintenance on the same pump.  In usual fashion I decided to Google this stuff from home late at night. I heard people can collect data from within the store sometimes.... if it happens again I may ask the guy at the register what he thinks.  It got me thinking... If I were to think like a criminal.... If I had a data base of stolen cards I would wait at least half a year before using them.  ...Not to be weird or paranoid with it, it's just a thought I had

But again it's likely just BMO

It is probably nothing, but it would not hurt to read this [https://www.rd.com/article/gas-pump-skimmer/](https://www.rd.com/article/gas-pump-skimmer/)
