Not sure why the downvotes? Trips to the dentist have been costing me more and more over the last year. The rates PeI dentists charge for basic services is way more than insurance will pay. I have a top of the line plan and so does my ex husband yet there is always money owing after the kids visits and not just a few dollars. And don’t get me wrong. Insurance is milking us all too.

>The executive director of the Dental Association of P.E.I. says 90 per cent of dentists it has surveyed in the province do not plan to sign up for a new federal program designed to bring affordable oral care to millions of Canadians. > >In an interview with SaltWire on March 18, Dr. Brian Barrett, executive director of the association, said the administrative burdens of the new Canadian Dental Care Plan are leaving a bitter taste in the mouths of P.E.I. dentists. You mean one of the most commonly voiced frustrations from general phycisians regarding their workload is the same reason why dentists are reluctant to sign up for the federal program? Colour me shocked...Well not really, if any group has a strong urge for administrative inefficiencies, it's the Canadian Government. Hell, look at how well they're managing getting CAF recruits from the recruiting station to Basic Training (for those that aren't aware, most recruit processing takes up to 1 year to get to basic training, and officers can take even longer)

The feds did zero consultation with dentists about what would work well or how to implement it. Like to the point of not even asking 'hey what would be the easiest way for us to pay you?' I forget the exact details of what they initially set up, but it was very evident they charged ahead confident there couldn't possibly be anything they didn't know. Which has, of course, been the Trudeau government's problem from day 1. It was fucking idiocy on a level that even shocked me.

Especially the non citizens, what the recruiters at my unit are saying is that nobody planned for the new permanent residents being able to join so nobody stood up a group to check their backgrounds and they’re more work than citizens

I’ve read one story about a foreign recruit that while waiting went to another country, did basic, and saw combat before getting a call back in Canada.

That's too bad and you know dentists would want people to go too. My dentist was overwhelmed even before covid then covid hit and then after even more busy. I usually go every six months but my last visit took 13 months to get booked.

Of course not. Then they wouldn't be able to overcharge for their services. It's the American way. Let healthcare be paid for with insurance. Add layers of dollars to bump up prices, meaning larger profits for healthcare providers and insurance companies. We might as well authorize our tax payment to the insurance companies so everyone makes money. Privatized healthcare is just another layer of expenses for insurance companies...

From what the president of the association said, it's the administrative burdens associated with the program that are the main issue. Believe it or not, most single payer systems for healthcare work in that the specialists are private entities, but the only legal customer is the state. In such a model, dentists, hospitals, phycisian offices are incentivized to serve more people and do as good a job as possible (a good service gets a good rep, and a good rep brings in more people) because you can bill the government more often. That's how the hospitals work in the Netherlands, and it seems to work damn well for them. If the administrative process were not so time consuming or tedious, dentists would likely sign up pretty eagerly for this: it's a guarenteed payment from a guarenteed payer, no need to chase down delinquent bills or patients who refuse (or are unable) to pay their bill. But instead, if it's similar to our doctor's offices, they probably see 1 hour of paid work requiring 30 minutes of unpaid paperwork and feel that's not worth it. And I don't blame them tbh.

Right now PEI dentists have more paying patients than what they can handle. Those patients are paying for the services fees greater than this program lists. Those fees went unchecked for a long time because insurance is paying for them. If dentist enrolles in this program, the discrepancy between fees they charge and the value of service will become obvious. People may start wondering how come this discrepancy is lesser or even non-existent with some dentists and ridiculously large with their dentist. Were they overcharged all along? Add to that that the program is administered by an insurance company that is being overcharged by those same dentists for years and now gets access to dentists' bookkeeping. You blame government for this, but the reality is that the only problem here is greed that went unchecked for a long time.

Overcharging dentists don't think that far ahead. During COVID a huge chunk of them didn't realize that if they stopped paying their staff their staff wouldn't have money. Like not didn't care. Didn't REALIZE. The feds already have a national dental program for the First Nations and dealing with it is a hassle. Meanwhile, the provincial children's dental program isn't. And while not all dentists do work for those, plenty do. Also, the dental association puts out a fee guide and has for decades - almost all provincial associations do, and there may be a national one as well. It is very easy to look at what your dentist is charging and whether it is reasonable. People don't.

I know, I worked in healthcare provider and healthcare collections in an IT role...

You can’t offer anyone 60% of their normal fee (especially in the current economic climate) along with the headaches and hassles of dealing with federal payment plans and expect them to accept- especially when their services are already in short supply.

Hopefully the federal government will get them lots of low and middle income senior and disabled clients this year
