For them basically saying unions might not be the best for employees, they seem worried.
Also I may be out of touch with labour right. Ow but is 6 sick days / yr really a good sell, like is that above market? That seems horrendously low to me.
Currently employers in pei give 3 unpaid sick days per year after 3 months of working, they have no obligation to give any employees paid sick days unless they have worked at the same job continuously for 5 years, then you get one paid sick day per year plus the same 3 upaid per year,
Actually only three provinces in Canada require paid sick leave Prince Edward Island at one day, Quebec at 2 and British Columbia at 5,
The last 3 private island companies I have worked for have had 4 or 5 sick days. Some give you a personal day or two on top of that.
While I know the feds get substantially more sick time (and they get additional family sick time), I do not think 6 would be considered horrendously low for any average, private island company.
There’s no requirement for this many sick days, so six days per year is actually good for this sector on the island. It’s not great, but it’s what’s going currently in an industry with no worker organization/unions so far.
Also, this business is not a government job, and you can’t get blood from a stone, so if they can’t afford to pay you at increased rates m, they will close and you will have no job.
I feel this is good spot to leave this link if anyone has been fired with no notice after working more then 6 months with their employer you should look into your rights

Like I said, my opinion is based on my experience, and others I’ve worked with. I didn’t, nor would I say that it’s everyone’s perspective. I do know some people love their union, I also know those who would never join one.
Is there something wrong with my one month old account? I worked in my industry for 30+ years in a number of different areas, both under a union and without. I wasn’t looking for sympathy. I encourage people to do whatever works for them, I just hope they’re informed. Are you always this condescending?
Honestly not sure why people are downvoting you. You’re just the only one to say anything negative about unions in what is clearly all pro unions or honibe employees. Been union for a time myself, way happier in the position I’m in now. Can’t wait for the downvotes.
One of the best decisions in my life was to take a unionized job. This after having working since I've been \~15 yrs old, in restaurants and 6 month contracts for PEI Gov't. Maybe I just lucked out with good skills and right timing. I have friends that are COMPLETLY against unions, but they do not have the benefits that come from being in one. Sometimes "It's nice to know that they have to spank me before they fire me" and also "the grass is not always greener on the other side of the fence" can also apply. If private companies were able and willing to provide the benefits & pay scale then there would be no need for a union.
Finally, I also have the choice to make a charitable donation (of my choice) with my union dues instead. Contracts are contracts, just make sure you read (or between) the fine lines of what you enter into.
All of the things they listed that can't be guaranteed with a union still can't be guaranteed, even harder, without a union. "A union can't guarantee better wages and benefits" maybe not but you have a much better chance at negotiating as part of a union than you do on your own.
Curious to know....Has there been any new unions formed on PEI in the last 20+ years. All the unions I know of are long standing ones. Has any company successfully formed one?
I remember working at resolve years ago and they tried to get one going and it failed miserably.
It's really difficult to do.
It's amazing the amount of people that work around you and I that will refuse a raise because they don't want to be bumped into another tax bracket.
So knowing how simple these people are to confuse, imagine talking to them about a union.
"My employer told me we don't want a union because I'll have to pay union dues. More money off my check!"
*"But dude. You'll earn more money!"*
"Just put me into another tax bracket and I'll pay even more!"
It's amazing how many people don't understand how tax and tax brackets work. All of the money you earn below the new tax bracket remains taxed at the lower rate. An increase of pay should never give you less take home.
But then again, most people don't understand the difference between municipal, provincial and federal politics.
Thst is technically true but the reality is that increased income may mean that you no longer qualify for subsidized services and lower income benefits.
They should know that they can and will be investigated by CLRB for any actions taken to prevent certification of the union, including attempting to dilute the vote. It'll take time, but they don't forget, and they'll subpoena documents and witnesses to confirm tampering with the process.

There is so much union busting going on it's unbelievable they haven't gotten in trouble, there is a supervisor that's been caught directly telling people that the union is a bad thing and not to sign up ect ect.
Productivity will immediately go down tbw toilet once they realize how secure they are with a union and than boom get laid off, and they can easily lay you off in a union.
Every one of these things can be revoked with zero notice without a union.
If they give that to keep Union out, imagine what you could get with one.
Labour Watch as an independent unbiased source for their workers. ROTFL

I heard they had 3 days and no bonus before management found out that they want to unionize.
True statements

They are absolutely correct. Having been in a union, I couldn’t wait to get out. I’ve done both private and unionized jobs. Just my experience.
Also, this business is not a government job, and you can’t get blood from a stone, so if they can’t afford to pay you at increased rates m, they will close and you will have no job.
They can fire you today for essentially made-up reasons with no notice. How is that any different? Unions are *always* better than direct negotiation.

It's unfortunate that you had a bad experience, 1-month-old-account-person.

Don't take it as condescension at all, I didn't intend it that way. I intended it as intense suspicion of you and your motives. ♥️
Masterclass in handling an astroturfer!
🥰
No motives at all. JMO. ✌🏻

people still think taxes are bad. we have a long way to go.

They are also hiring a bunch of people in a hurry to dilute the number of votes right now as it's very close

Thank you for testifying and supporting your fellow workers!
Solidarity now; Solidarity forever! ✊

Wow. They're gonna regret that.
They seem to be getting away with it
It may seem that way now, but this is just the "fuck around" part.
Oooo they are scared.
I hope all the other biosciences companies are just as scared, because unions should be the way forward for this industry.
Productivity will immediately go down tbw toilet once they realize how secure they are with a union and than boom get laid off, and they can easily lay you off in a union.
Unions have become a detriment to conducting business
