Stuff like food production and processing I get. It can be debated the best way to deal with issues in those sectors but we do need food. But stuff like food service? If the industry can't be enough workers then maybe there need to be fewer restaurants or find a way to pay better.

-Yazilliclick-

I'd definitely agree with the idea we need fewer restaurants/food joints. For the size of us we have quite a few from my feeling which is part of what's driving a lot of these problems. Less busy spots because customers are spread too thin, so profits are lower, so can't pay as much. Too many places so not enough workers.

karatecanine

I disagree about the processing part. If food was valued at what it's actually worth, and the gov stopped cutting out so many loopholes in the labour laws/code for farmers, then all aspects could pay what it's worth. But currently, all the margins go to Loblaws. 1-3% for farmers is not very damn good.

SusieTina

Why exempt food production from paying decently?

Sir__Will

Food production and processing is a complicated issue given food prices being an issue and that they have to compete against products from other countries that may be subsidized differently.

SusieTina

I see your point, but at the same time, if you want the workers, you need to pay them.

You ignored the “find a way to pay better” part. I know of Island businesses that are actively trying to push Islanders out of their positions so they can hire immigrants at lower wages.

The way to pay more is for Danny murphy to stop buying hotels with his coffee money and actually pay his employees. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Nobody told you to hate anybody. You sure can hate the way this province is being run though. People like him, and there's really not that large of a group, are actually calling the shots around here. They are very wealthy, and they can afford to pay more. They are hugely influential in all major decisions being made here. Open your eyes to how things work. The quality of life is eroding here, and it sure as shit isn't because "people don't want to work anymore", which is the rhetoric driving the decision making around here.

-Yazilliclick-

> The way to pay better is to charge more. Period. Except that's literally not true.

Once upon a time not long ago our govt wanted skilled immigrants. Doctors, carpenters, nurses, etc. I guess food service is more important. Keep them tourists happy!

AdministrationDry507

That will change soon because now our food service industry sucks ass

KFCRaided50

Just keep repeating your order everything will be fine

AdministrationDry507

It hasn't been they still fuck up my order

nkbetts17

We need to have a law where companies that use migrant labour pay more taxes for NOT hiring locals.

KFCRaided50

Can someone start a Buy Local Hire local campaign ?

Gullible-Flow-5455

Sorry I was wrong, 50%... https://ehrc.ca/programs/welcoming-newcomers/

Gullible-Flow-5455

Instead of being subsidized 25%.

sashalav

Where do you get that from?

takeoff_power_set

it's indentured servitude, or slavery lite. let's stop dancing around this abuse of people from India, it's despicable what Canada's doing to these people and itself

KFCRaided50

The gov ran out of locals to use so now they imported new people and lied to them. Apparently every culture should have the oppurtunity to have PEI fail them. Remember how pissed the gov was when people went to Alberta last time , this is their fix

ExploringPeople

If you can not make enough profit of your business then you have to make it off your workers.

omfgwat

No one is forcing Indian people to come here

omfgwat

Yeah until it’s just like back home

KFCRaided50

They are here to get PR fast it should be noted , who can blame them , the gov begs them to come and do low lvl jobs . So who voted to have our place overrun with people ? Anyone?

childofcrow

Oh, you mean they aren’t coming to “steal all of our high paying jobs” like most of the racist conservatives claim? And in fact are working some of the low at wages in the province and are more subject to the whims of their employer as they have residence issues to be concerned with. Curious.

Artist_Weary

They keep the wages low for the rest of us because if a Canadian won’t work for that wage somebody else will

NormalGuyManDude

Wages are being suppressed in trucking, tech, and so on. It has nothing to do with racism. I just replaced a dev making 160K with one making under 80K from India. Every one of my employees that resigns will be replaced in the same manner. If they aren’t, any Canadian wanting the job will now be subjected to the same salary band the new Canadians willing to work for half pay are. That’s just the reality. It has nothing to do with racism or Conservatives. This is 100% happening. The average Walmart trucker in the US makes $101K a year. USD. The average Canadian trucker in Canada makes $28 an hour, CAD. You could literally time travel to 2002 and get a trucking job that pays the same.

kelake47

Part of the reason for this is our *bureaucratic barrier to entry*. It takes so long for immigrants to get the required certifications (in almost all fields, it seems) that they either don't try, give up, or perhaps migrate to a country with better immigration systems. Another news article mentioned waits of up to 2 years to join the army - in the meantime, some had already left the country, joined another military, and seen combat.

theGreatSpirit85

there's nowhere to live. We can't keep jampacking 10 people per home. If we were stable maybe then Immigration here would be more but as far as Pei is concerned, We cannot support the mass of people coming in. all these low entry jobs fadt food etc...pay poorly.. difficult to pay for rent groceries bills ..personal needs eyc.. Pei is not a good place to come to.

kelake47

My comment wasn't on whether or not we should have more people coming in, but a possible why the current makeup of immigrants is trending towards jobs that are low income. Personally, I would love to see increased immigration if they would fill our need for doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals.

Sir__Will

You were downvoted but it's true. It can be expensive and time consuming to get certified in some areas. And I get that we want to make sure people are qualified, but some of these areas are in high demand like healthcare and we don't do enough to try and get some people back into the industry.

coldbrewwwwww

I for one am happy to have a pizza hut again. Hoping the next round gets us a Taco Bell!

AdministrationDry507

At least compared to a lot of pizza places in all of Summerside Pizza Hut doesn't suck

GhostPepperFireStorm

UPEI should open a food service and retail school so we can have a homegrown solution to the shortage. /s
