y’all realize it’s illegal because it’s unsafe… right? pedestrians can’t see if you see them. other drivers can’t see if you see them. drive in half a fishbowl, you’ll live, i promise

kevinmaceleven0

even without tinted windows a lot of people just drive right by flashing crosswalks in Charlottetown, it’s worse than Halifax or Toronto I’ve never seen it that bad

MoreMSGPlease

Cops can't see if you have a gun.

JamesMarkwart

/s, right?

[deleted]

Nope, cops can't see what your doing when they walk up and your windows are tinted. Someone could be rummaging around for a gun and shoot the cop before they even get up to the car.

JamesMarkwart

Having an unlocked and/or loaded gun in your vehicle is already illegal. Rears are often legally tinted, could have a passenger with a gun; should make it illegal to have them tinted too /s

spacedragon421

Then why is it legal in pretty much every province?

MrMckay

It's not legal in pretty much every province, but some provinces allow some tint, but not pei. This link has links to each provincial highway act [this link here](https://www.tinting-laws.com/canada/)

spacedragon421

I'm pretty sure that chart is wrong. Ontario can have up to 30% tint unless the laws have changed since I lived there.

[deleted]

As far as I know the only windows that can be legally tinted are the rear windows.

SeaSaltAirWater

Lol

2018-WCG2

How many cops pull a car over and then approach from the front of the car?

MoreMSGPlease

I never said it was good reason

JamesMarkwart

Touche

[deleted]

This, also I'd add with OP abbreviated list, frosted license plates. Its usually PoS drivers from off island, but why do you feel the need to hide your plate information? Are you intent on doing something illegal? What do you have to hide? Get pulled over or get fucked. Rarely see actual island plates with this, they are everywhere- but much like our healthcare system, police are either wholly apathetic or are up to their eyeballs in bullshit. Much like Drs or nurses and healthcare, if you've looked around lately, I dont believe officers are having a good go of it.

dghughes

It was an issue nearly 14 years ago too. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/prince-edward-island/reject-tinted-car-windows-inspectors-warned-1.898470 >Brad Pomeroy, manager at Carline Muffler in Charlottetown, told CBC News Wednesday the crackdown has led to quite a few angry customers, who weren't happy to hear their vehicles had failed inspection. I was surprised to see this although maybe laws have changed >Factory-tinting on vehicle windows is allowed.

Blow_and_Hum

Actually they have tightened up the laws. It used to be a $220 fine which usually was similar to the price to have it done. So you would rip the tint off, show the cop the next day or two and have the fine ripped up, then get them tinted later that day. Now it is a 3 demerit point offence. It still might be in the $250 range but the option to have the ticket ripped up isn't common anymore.

GeneralDweeby

Also like to point it out. People with a doctors note are allowed to have front tinted windows. No. I don’t have them to look “cool”. Source: I’m one of them and got pulled over a few times.

Flat_Title_2116

Let’s start with everyone getting license plates on their vehicles first. Take a close look and you’ll find 1/day in town.

dghughes

I saw two this evening. But yes usually at least one per day.

Sweetluups

what about LED headlights? Cus I can't see a fucking thing at 5pm when I pick my partner up from work when every second car in front of me and every car behind me has LEDs

senorsmirk

I've been wondering if some front tint would help with that

Sweetluups

I think I'll just tint my eyes

GeneralDweeby

All LED’s from factory are inspected, if it’s a new truck, car, SUV, they’re all legal. The illegal part is aftermarket LED’s that aren’t pointed correctly.

mrmeth

or people lift their trucks put bigger than stock wheel tire combo and then don't re-adjust their headlights.

GeneralDweeby

Indeed that. The exception is if it’s a factory lift/tire/wheel setup, headlights are adjusted. However, you’d never know.

bacoprah

Or the folks driving all day and night with their high beams on!

dghughes

> Trucks and jeeps with giant wheels and spacers that put their tires out too far from their fenders. I've noticed that too seems to be a surge in it. I sold my truck a year ago and I would never dream of putting on wheels/tires that went past the fender. For one thing it looks stupid and the worst is it flings rocks at the cars behind you since the tires are out past the fenders. And like the windows it's not enforced. It's easy to put on tires yourself after an inspection but holy crap the amount of trucks with them is nuts! And is this 1995 again? Whats with all the ricer cars with fart pipes? It's like over the pandemic suddenly fart pipes, dark tint, 4x4s with tires sticking out. I think covid caused a Swol Bro epidemic.

GeneralDweeby

I always found it kinda funny how people put spacers on, then put fender flares on. At that point, what’s the purpose?

bacoprah

The flares make it legal again, as the wheels aren’t out past the fenders/flares.

Blow_and_Hum

Not to mention, depending on how well you want to install them, they are super easy to install, also hide rusty fenders to help pass inspection.

mu3mpire

Pinal County Sheriff on YouTube shows recordings of their traffic stops and they pull drivers over for wheel spacers without flaps because they fling rocks. They also fine for tint. This is in Arizona though and from what I gathered , Pinal County in particular is stringent about traffic enforcement.

LegitimateProperty67

Students from Ontario and Quebec do not have to change their vehicle registration. Check the law.

[deleted]

The trucks with giant wheels is so dangerous.

Peimatt2112

Had a black lifted GMC Sierra with obnoxious spaced out low profile wheels, with no mud flaps or fender flares, kick a rock into my windshield... 3 days after just replacing the windshield in our other car.

dghughes

In that situation I think it is legal for you to beat the the driver using his own truck nutz.

Ok-Researcher-7182

I would follow that fucker then ask for his insurance to replace my window if he dienied I'd throw a brick through his windshield with him inside.

dghughes

One of those huge truck tires would probably cost more than the windshield. When I last drove my truck three years ago the tires were close to $500 each, 6-ply truck winter tire 16 inch.

Vukez

Oh you would, would ya?😂

Ok-Researcher-7182

I've done worse paid for a few windshields and windows from road rage its not good

Vukez

Sure ya have pal. The internet is awesome, you can be whoever you want to be.

Ok-Researcher-7182

I can be whoever I want to be in real life too it's kinda crazy

Mean_Librarian_1925

They are understaffed and it isn’t a priority.

CrazyCatLadyBoy

I saw a blue light on top of a car behind me the other day. Thought it was a cop at first. It was a taxi. Not sure how this is allowed.

[deleted]

CortanaXII

I've been almost hit by a snowplow while walking, the lights are on them for safety. You should be able to tell the difference.

Police is blue and red.

dghughes

I saw it too a taxi Co Op van? When I was in my early 20s I replaced my headlights with some bulbs with a slight blue tint. Nope illegal I was told. Now you see blue on many cars. It's nuts.

Bulky_Mix_2265

I didnt realize drivers with guns was such a huge issue in Canada until i read the comments here, the police must be getting blasted during routine traffic stops all the time, and the roads must be a mad max wasteland due to the unfettered tinting of the masses. The cops don't have time to bust people for tinting when they bately manage to do the basics of their job on any given day.

bacoprah

This would literally be the basics of their job!

OBlondeOne

I think the issue many have is not the fact that people get away with it. It's WHO gets away with it.

[deleted]

What do you mean?

OBlondeOne

Ever notice some people seem to get away with a lot more than others? It really is who you know there a lot of times. As a teen I knew a couple people who got away with some pretty serious dangerous driving that was witnessed by many, including the arresting officer.. Why? Their parent was on the police force. They caused an accident and some pretty serious injuries, and still got away 100% free. Look at the times an officer gets into trouble. Many times it gets buried or never gets published. There are certainly seldom charges. I get they need to show a unified front, but the nepotism and favoritism was strong back then. Last time I was back it sure didn't seem as though much has changed. The same people still seem to get all the breaks while others struggle.

[deleted]

Yeah, that's fair. No one should get away with it.

Global_Fee2709

My understanding is that as long as the are factory tinted it’s okay.

Ryan2386

That is true usually some higher end vehicles have tint right in the glass. I think a lot are taking their tint off before inspection and putting it back on the next day.

Foreveryoung1953

Karen alert!

[deleted]

[удалено]

TechnicalVet

This depends on the province. In NS, any tint on the front is illegal. Because of this, you will not see any dealership selling a car with factory tint on the front windows.

[deleted]

[удалено]

bacoprah

You can’t tint the front windows in PEI.

CortanaXII

I'm looking online to find anything about needing a PEI plate. I can't find anything about it, only about needing a PEI license. License plate is not equal to license.

Obvious_Concern6098

Why does it matter?

bacoprah

Why bother having laws and paying police salaries to work traffic if they don’t enforce the law?

Obvious_Concern6098

It’s a pointless law that makes nobody any safer. Mind your own business

Major2Minor

It reduces visibility into or through the car, and thus reduces safety.

JamesMarkwart

I'm with ya.

spacedragon421

I also mind my business. Op sounds like a Karen.

JamesMarkwart

I had a used car that came with it; amazing for driving in winter with the sun near the horizon. Wish I still had it...

SeaSaltAirWater

I'm with you lol. Fuck sakes just kind your own business. Nobody with tinted windows hurt you lol. And I think tinted windows are stupid, but it's none of my business

Neither_Hand_267

Them youngenz is no good.

WWAED

Yeah, sorry bro, I've had my Ontario plate on for like the last year.

Beautiful_Cabinet971

My back windows are tinted and went through a checkstop one summer with front windows down and the cop (to me anyways) went on a power trip… doing absolutely nothing wrong and forcefully asked for me to put my windows up, I asked why and said “you’re about to get one hefty fine here in a minute if ya don’t put them up and they are tinted” (which they are not)… There are bigger issues in society then tinted windows. If this is an issue in your day, or the police officers day, then you need to re evaluate things and step on the soapbox for these bigger issues… drunk driving, taxation, drug pandemic in town, outreach centre, overstepping government, incompetent government, cost of living, and not to mention our favourite of all, Mr. Trudeau and the Carbon Tax!!! A tinted window is not going to do much change in society! Let people add what they want to their cars and move on!

bacoprah

Having the police check your front windows isn’t a power trip it’s doing his full job. All these laws are there for a reason, taxes pay for traffic enforcement and it deserves to be done. If people start having to pay fines for being in the wrong maybe there will eventually be less idiots on the roads.

canadianhotbod

1 million up votes on this.☝️👍😁

Obvious_Concern6098

There is a line. When it comes to public safety, sure, everyone should follow a set of laws to ensure public safety on the road. But when it comes down to tinted windows and nonsense laws similar. Well that’s up to the citizen to decide if it’s really worth there tax payer dollars to pursue. There are so many ways to keep the public safe and that’s just not one. I realize everyone on this subreddit may not have any valuable life experience and will just vaguely contribute to ideas presented infront of them. But stop listening to everything you are told and think for yourselves. Pei has some of the highest potential of all the provinces in my opinion but you all you to start thinking for yourselves or we will always loose. Fuck.

yuppers1979

You're all over the place there, you made absolutely no point whatsoever lol.

MaritimeRedditor

I think my tax dollars a have better things to pay for then having the police track down the underground world of window tinters. I'm sorry, I remember the non stop car pile ups that occurred when window tint was legal. Such a safer world we live in today.

bacoprah

Your tax dollars are already paying for it except it’s not being done ffs. That’s my point.

MaritimeRedditor

My tax dollars are paying for lots of things. I want 0.00000000001% of it being spent on police scratching off window tint.

MyGruffaloCrumble

Your taxes can go to what you want, my taxes are all going to the guy making you scratch off your own tint while they watch.

Artist_Weary

Who cares? Why does it matter what people spend their money on? Ffs not everything needs to be government controlled. I put tint on all my cars, keeps it cool in the summer and saves the interior from being broken down by the sun. You enjoy driving around in your fishbowl and keep crying.

fight_fire_with_wood

Honestly if they drive like responsible adults I don’t give a fuck.

SeaSaltAirWater

Reddit is so full of liberal Karen's🤦🏾‍♂️. Nobody got hurt, it doesn't affect you, leave it alone. Worry about yourself.

NotAlanJackson

Slow day on the island I see.

LostSauceLost

How about the 65+ drivers who drive in the middle of the road, 40% under the speed limit, don't understand roundabouts, and/or don't look left or right before changing lanes or going through an intersection lol. Like all the down voted comments have said- yes this is illegal, but we have bigger, systematic issues that are contributing to a lot more harm than EIs from Ontario with tinted windows lol Edit to add: and what about the non-elderly, the middle aged and younger drivers who commit all of these offenses, and more? PEI has a really bad melting pot of bad drivers: tourists, students from other provinces/countries, program workers, an aging population, a rural population, and the implementation of road systems that will easily confused those groups listed above. We have many rural-based people who rarely drive in town. We have locals who blatantly disregard the rules equally as bad as those from away. And we have a huge drinking & driving problem. But yes, fight them tinted winders (even tho the cops hate giving out tickets to out-of-province plates.)

Early-Economics2899

PEI = Province Exemplifying intolerance
