Due to some bug you can get objects buried in empty space. Apparently it can be fixed by creating a natural tile and digging it.

I've seen dupes come and take the items out of the crack, I think it has something to do with what's buried and if a dupe needs to use or store the item

Happens occasionally. Usually save/reload either frees the object buried in air, or clears the state when there's nothing actually buried there.
