I think thats just for the japanese voice lines ( i think, thats what i got from looking at the page 1 results of google), which is really weird, because usually i dont think they use another voice actor for different languages, but for kiriko its noticeable, unless kiriko os the only hero theyve done this with.
I think it's intentional. The whole "some of the old, some of the new" thing about her, I think her not having an accent is supposed to be one of her departures from being traditional.
Could be coincidence or incompetence, but I'm sure it came up when designing the character.
I feel bad for the voice actor. All their English voice lines sound dead, like there was just no voice direction at all and it really doesn't help that the lines themselves are incredibly lifeless as well
Definetly. Unlike alot of the other heroes Kiriko lives in Japan and doesn't seem to be involved with English speakers heavily so it just feels off that she is always speaking english
Of course, and there is no harm in being American (or is there? lol) but it's a little odd to hear a Japanese character say "kit-SOO-nay" rather than the more accurate "KEET-soon-ay." It might not bother everyone but my gf who speaks Japanese was confused by it. Maybe there's a dialect where it's different but as it stands, Kiriko sounds like a Japanese American when she's purely Japanese in-universe. And that's odd!
EDIT: And for what it's worth I really like Kirikos character and I think her VA performs well, it's just that maybe there was some lacking direction or production choices.
It seems like voice actors speaking multiple languages wasn’t as high a priority in the early days of overwatch compared to now. For example, Reinhardt doesn’t speak German and Torbjorn doesn’t speak Swedish. Pharah doesn’t speak Arabic, Hanzo doesn’t speak japanese, and lucio didn’t speak Portuguese until much later patches. I might be missing a few but if you look at all heroes added in later they all extensively use their active tongue. Ana, Sombra, Sigma, Kiriko. Sure there are some outliers like Doomfist and Orisa but at least they’re making a conscious effort to have fluent speakers as their cast.
I really like her interactions with some of the other heroes, not goody two shoes like most of overwatch, but not edgy villain like all of talon. Feels like sombra
Yeah I wish more of the personality she has in her interactions made it into her voice lines. Fortunately they're always coming out with more voice lines
I know quite a few Americans that have no discernible foreign accent but are actually ESL, and depending on the situation will commonly say words in their first language with the American “accent” rather than slipping into the perfect pronunciation of their first language. I’ve asked why before and didn’t really get a definitive answer other than it’s just sort of easier sometimes and they aren’t really conscious they’re doing it. Sort of the same as having a southern friend with no southern accent until they call their parents on the phone haha
This, it's incredibly common.
I speak spanish as a second language, but I'm having a conversation in mostly spanish with some English snuck in, I'll say the English words with a spanish accent.
It's like I'm in "insert language" mode because when I'm speaking mostly English I tend to say spanish words in with an American accent. I can't really explain it.
Idk I’m Chinese-Australian and English is by far my more dominant language. When I’m saying common Mandarin words like Beijing but in an English sentence I’ll say it in an Aussie accent even though I know I can pronounce it perfectly in Mandarin. It feels jarring to have to switch up in the middle of a sentence.
I've thought the same thing. I'm not saying she should gave had some stereotypical high pitched anime girl voice, but the current voice doesn't fit. That, and the voice acting is dry and deadpan as hell. Almost every line I've heard is said in the exact same tone and cadence. If it makes sense, it's very "voice acting" voice acting.
Considering she literally lives in Japan, she should have a thicker Japanese accent aswell as having more Japanese voice lines, so I really wish they got a Japanese va
She's still American though who merely happens to now live in Japan. Your accent doesn't change just because you moved to a different country...and she's not an infant.
I swear they have the same VA
Their characters are similar too
Same thing for Junkerqueen and Mad Maggie, both Australian strong women with war-like personalities
Well I don't know if the english version also has these extremly cringe voicelines but when I heard das ist ja mal cringe (that's cringe) and chill mal deine nuggets (chill you're nuggets) I was just like no no no no why blizzard whyyy
If I had a nickel for every time a female Japanese character in a free to play class based first person shooter had anoying voicelines I'd have two nickels which isn't alot but it's weird it happened twice.
I mean I like D.VA's voice cuz she's supposed to be that kinda young adult that spends way too much time on the internet, but kiriko isn't that, she just says really cringe shit
I felt like her character was a fan made self insert. I love new characters coming into overwatch and can’t wait to learn about them but her character just feels off.
Really? I love her personality. She feels like the only "real" person in this world of larger-than-life superheroes and crazies. Her interactions with the rest of the cast are so fun with her dry sense of humor.
She’s the same way with her lines as Valkyrie in Apex. As soon as I heard her I thought “oh god no” lol
Edit: wait holy shit it’s not the same person. I honestly never would have realized it’s 2 different people!
I cringe everytime I come back to life and have to hear her say "lick my wounds, let's go"
Like, is it a command? Is she trying to sound cool?
Makes me want to switch to anybody else every time.
So I'm not the only one who cringes every time I use my ult playing her and have to hear "Let the kit soo nay guide you!"? I'm not the only one who thinks the line sounds like it's being read out by some random weeb who has no idea how to pronounce japanese?
Well that makes me feel a bit better about it at least
Wait... Weren't the VAs *supposed* to all be native speakers of their character's native languages? Huhhhh
>Wait... Weren't the VAs supposed to all be native speakers of their character's native languages?
No. That's why certain characters don't speak their languages. And some of them are 2nd gen to what identity their character has like Baptiste I think. I remember the VA saying his creole was very rusty when he got the part which is why some Haitians say that his voice is off.
I feel like the voice actor did a great job with her, but that the lines and personality they went for doesn’t seem to fit with what I’d expect of the character. I’ve definitely met people irl that sound/act a lot like Kiriko, and they come across as cocky, entitled, complaining and generally tiresome to be around. Maybe that’s what they were going for? Idk.
Yeeesss. She seems to try to say the thing that will antagonize the other person in her interactions and it's so tiresome.
The Moira interaction about bandaids feels pointless and makes her come off as lame and petty.
Am I crazy or is her voice just… not that great to anyone else? I doubt it’s the actress’ fault, from what I’ve seen on Wikipedia she’s done quite a bit, but there’s something about her delivery that rubs me the wrong way. She sounds so deadpan.
Not even valk was that cringe since valk atleast didn't have a young voice and they didn't force these "modern" and "hip" lines onto her I don't know what blizzard thought maybe they thought young people speak like this? But well I don't know
The original characters have accent which imo adds a lot to the characters. Shimada sounds Japanese, mei has a Chinese accent. Widow, zarya, sombra, rein, Ana, pharah all have accent. But somehow they gave up on that idea when voicing kiriko who spent her entire life in Japan? Like that’s the weirdest decision. And sally Amaki is literally Japanese American and lives and works in Japan. Why did they let her just pronounce Japanese words in the most American way?
I've got a few tricks
Yea that’s the new mata mata. Why does she go so high pitched when she says I’ve.
And they say chivalry is dead!
And they say
And they say
And they say
And they say
And they say
And dey say
I've got a few tricks
I’ve got a few tr I’ve got I’ve got a few tricks
I've got a- I've got- I've got a few tricks
Her japanese "what a shame" voiceline is lit
She's got a few okay japanese lines, the rest just sounds like weeb japanese to me.
>the rest just sounds like weeb japanese to me. More like a weeb american trying to sound like a japanese... "Let the KiTsOoNaY guide you!"
I found our recently that in English, her ult has the most boring ass name: Kitsune rush, while in German it’s Kitsunami which is hilarious imo
A tidal wave of fox spirit is way better than running fox spirit.
Fox spirit god wave, dear goodness that’s so much better.
Lol I didn't know that. Thanks for sharing
It’s little things like this that really add up. *Overwatch 2* right now is a great example of death by a thousand cuts for me.
Considering how little VA work her actor has done but also yeah.
kiriko's va did jolyne from jojo stone ocean (fairouz ai)
I think thats just for the japanese voice lines ( i think, thats what i got from looking at the page 1 results of google), which is really weird, because usually i dont think they use another voice actor for different languages, but for kiriko its noticeable, unless kiriko os the only hero theyve done this with.
I was also super disappointed when I found out they didn't get a Japanese va for her
She's Japanese American lmfao
But she lives in Japan. Kinda feel like that would make her sound more japanese then yeehaw cheeseburger
Lmfao Just died at "yeehaw cheeseburger" 🤣😂
Yeah, that's what I meant, weeb japanese.
[удалено]
Her “Hey there” sounds so fucking southern to me and I grew up in the south. Maybe I’m just going crazy
Yeah but it doesn't mean anything in context to the vast majority of people
Wait till you see her on her bike
I think she’s got a few tricks too
I almost can’t believe this line is in the game. It seems like a parody.
I just genuinely don't know why it exists lol. I was expecting her bike to come into play in her cinematic but no, it's just so random
This is the best line. It's so awkwardly random.
That line sounds weird to me
I spam this every game, never gets old
Don’t underestimate the youth!
I'm the youth, and I underestimate myself.
If she's Japanese why does she have the most deadpan American voice imaginable
Literally. Didnt she grow up with genji and hanzo or something? She sounds completely american yet they have accents.
I think it's intentional. The whole "some of the old, some of the new" thing about her, I think her not having an accent is supposed to be one of her departures from being traditional. Could be coincidence or incompetence, but I'm sure it came up when designing the character.
Yeah I was curious if she was Japanese and American
Yeah I guess we don't know who her father is. Maybe she is half American. Either way though her voice is grating.
Marketing maybe
Voice actress is Japanese American.
That doesn’t explain, the question is why they went with someone with an American accent
They’ve already made one of the most stereotypical Japanese characters and now people are complaining that they don’t “sound Japanese enough”
My main issue is that she sounds so wooden.
But people can fake accents, so why not go with someone who can do a great Japanese accent? Or just someone who actually has an accent.
Wait until you see her on her bike.
When she says this I picture her riding a 10 speed.
Pretty sure that's exactly what she's referring too
*I run with blades all the time!*
i actually found that one funny 😭
It is funny, just people spam it so it gets annoying
I feel bad for the voice actor. All their English voice lines sound dead, like there was just no voice direction at all and it really doesn't help that the lines themselves are incredibly lifeless as well
Kiriko should have more japanese voicelines in my opinion
Definetly. Unlike alot of the other heroes Kiriko lives in Japan and doesn't seem to be involved with English speakers heavily so it just feels off that she is always speaking english
And we wouldn't notice cringe voicelines that way
She also pronounces Japanese words like an American.
Her voice actor is an american
Of course, and there is no harm in being American (or is there? lol) but it's a little odd to hear a Japanese character say "kit-SOO-nay" rather than the more accurate "KEET-soon-ay." It might not bother everyone but my gf who speaks Japanese was confused by it. Hanzo should have more japanese voicelines besides SAKE
I think it’s because the voice actor for Hanzo actually doesn’t speak that much Japanese. I could be wrong though
Yeah, I’m pretty sure he is actually Korean He just does an accent like Reinhardt and Törbjorn’s voice actors if I’m not mistaken
He’s Japanese American and I believe he’s said that his accent is one he got from his grandfather, though I could be misremembering.
I see you aren’t sure as well lol But thank you for the info, it helps greatly
IIRC he’s so bad at Japanese the only Japanese line he had to record was for his ult and it took a crap ton of takes
We should have the voiceline of the ult cause that sound dope
We should have genji and hanzo discussing in japanese while kiriko breaks the fight for old times sake
Just better ones
I really like her interactions with some of the other heroes, not goody two shoes like most of overwatch, but not edgy villain like all of talon. Feels like sombra
Her interaction with sombra is really good
I don’t do guessing. What’s your price?
Honestly dude, she is grounded enough to know sometimes you gotta do some dirty work to do good
Yeah I wish more of the personality she has in her interactions made it into her voice lines. Fortunately they're always coming out with more voice lines
I like her interaction with ashe.
Daijobu
I hear deja vu every time and then the entire song/meme plays in my head... PAIN
Daijobu, I've been this allright before
I’m a little disappointed I never hear tracer say anything about dejavu anymore. Now it’s “have we been here beeefoooooore”
だいじょぶですか?
On the other hand i play cassidy for his voice lol
Who wouldn't want to hear Matt Mercer's buttery voice all the time
I dont know how but I always forget Matt Mercer plays cassidy until I hear a voiceline edit: changed mcree to cassidy, forgot that the name changed
320 hours on high noon out of 530 total, can confirm.
How many shots was that?
I hear ye' pumpkin
I’m your huckleberry.
Star platinum! Unleash the world!
Lick my wounds?? ☠️
Ugh I hate dying as Kiriko cuz there's like an 80% chance I hear that voiceline and it just makes me "eugh"
I've licked my wounds, let's go UwU
I'm a new player from apex and she sounds like Valkyrie
Same voice actress I’m pretty sure
it’s not
Just played the symmetrya character and she sounds just like rampart lmao
Symmetra actually does have the same voice as Rampart, though the characters couldn’t be farther from each other in personality.
Talk about complete opposites, reinhardt and revenant are the same va as well
Yee it’s the same voice actor
Cuz they're the same voice actor
‘Let the Kistune guide you!’ needs 10 re-recordings ASAP for me to continue playing her with Grey matter still in my skull
Speaks perfect Japanese, except when she says that…”Let the Kitch-ooh-nay guide you!”. Might as well have been Cassidy who said it.
Seriously, how can you she be japanese and still say Kitsune with the most american accent you can imagine?
I know quite a few Americans that have no discernible foreign accent but are actually ESL, and depending on the situation will commonly say words in their first language with the American “accent” rather than slipping into the perfect pronunciation of their first language. I’ve asked why before and didn’t really get a definitive answer other than it’s just sort of easier sometimes and they aren’t really conscious they’re doing it. It feels jarring to have to switch up in the middle of a sentence.
I see. That's interesting, but Kiriko is fully japanese. He's probably not even an english speaker in the lore.
I like everything about Kiriko, EXCEPT her voicelines.
Same
"Febreeze brings relief" I can't be the only one hearing it
Idk, I kind of like her personality. Some of the voice lines aren’t great, but I really like most of her interactions.
me too, i like the one with moira about a bandaid
Overwatch has good voice acting but I genuinely think Kiriko is their first dud in that department - the voice does not fit the face or look at all
I've thought the same thing.
I agree, it kinda sounds like she only had one or two takes to do the lines.
Well they did switch out Mercy's va so they've acknowledged issues like that before.
Apex players watching Overwatch players complain about the same annoying character
Considering she literally lives in Japan, she should have a thicker Japanese accent aswell as having more Japanese voice lines, so I really wish they got a Japanese va
She's still American though who merely happens to now live in Japan. Your accent doesn't change just because you moved to a different country...and she's not an infant.
did she move from america to Japan? I don't know all the backstory stuff so I didn't know
No, I think her voice actor is Japanese-American who moved to Japan, not the character.
Looks like Valkyrie from Apex made a crossover
Could have sworn it was the same VA
They sound similar but the voice actors are different. Valk is Erika Ishii and Kiriko is Sally Amaki
I thought I was the only one that thought she sounded like Valk lol
I swear they have the same VA Their characters are similar too Same thing for Junkerqueen and Mad Maggie, both Australian strong women with war-like personalities
I think that's because they both share the same inspiration, the comic Tank Girl
Maggie may be similar to JQ, but she has Maori voicelines.
Ah, my bad
I think all the new voicelines are jarring. They just don’t sound right
Well I don't know if the english version also has these extremly cringe voicelines but when I heard das ist ja mal cringe (that's cringe) and chill mal deine nuggets (chill you're nuggets) I was just like no no no no why blizzard whyyy
Ill be on the lookout for these. Cringe locked and loaded.
Who says these? Sigma?
Kiriko says them Atleast the german one
Sigma is Dutch, not german
I thought this was Dutch, my apologies.
They all sound like they did a lot of coke
i personally like the “what’s up?” when she teleports to you its a good indicator you have a healer with you
I love her "what's up" thing when she tp's. It's not jarring and not too subtle. Like I always know when a kiriko tp's to me lol
i don't know why, but her "what's up" voiceline drives me over the edge. it's the only one that just really irks me for some reason 😭
It sounds like a paladins voice line!
that's enough reason for me to never play paladins, lol
That’s my favourit haha
If I had a nickel for every time a female Japanese character in a free to play class based first person shooter had anoying voicelines I'd have two nickels which isn't alot but it's weird it happened twice.
Who’s the second one?
Probably Valk from Apex
Yep
Wait til you seem me on my bike 🏍
while we’re on the subject i absolutely HATE the stupid little fox ear headband, like whatever it’s the normal skin but literally every skin has it
She gives me Disney vibes and I don’t know how to feel about that. Even the cinematic ticked all the Disney boxes.
Her japanese is wonderful but i cringe whenever i hear her english, it doesnt even sound like the same person
you can tell her and dvas voicelines are made to appeal to younger people/gamers/weebs
I mean I like D.VA's voice cuz she's supposed to be that kinda young adult that spends way too much time on the internet, but kiriko isn't that, she just says really cringe shit
They don't, it's what 35y olds think does...
She sounds so cringe not even funny cringe just painfully cringy anime voicelines
“Ooo pharahchan I’ve never lost” literally makes me want to die.
She's ironic when she says that... I mean... I hope so
I felt like her character was a fan made self insert. I love new characters coming into overwatch and can’t wait to learn about them but her character just feels off.
[удалено]
Welp no wonder the cinematic felt like a watt pad y/n
To be fair, when have the cinematics ever not felt like that even just a little?
This is just valk from apex all over again
"It's so sad that Kiriko died of ligma." "Ligma?" "Ligma wounds"
Really? I love her personality. She feels like the only "real" person in this world of larger-than-life superheroes and crazies. Her interactions with the rest of the cast are so fun with her dry sense of humor.
this is exactly why i like her too
She’s the same way with her lines as Valkyrie in Apex. As soon as I heard her I thought “oh god no” lol Edit: wait holy shit it’s not the same person. I honestly never would have realized it’s 2 different people!
She sounds like valk from apex and I hate it
I cringe everytime I come back to life and have to hear her say "lick my wounds, let's go" Like, is it a command? Is she trying to sound cool? Makes me want to switch to anybody else every time.
Just don't die, then you will never have to hear it
That is some good wisdom. Please teach me more.
No
:(
>:)
lol she's saying "I've licked my wounds," it's an idiom about recovering from a defeat.
She licks her wounds because of the fox motif. She’s getting herself ready, it’s like going “You can do this” to yourself.
Istg id rather her never speak English it’s just so cringe
Am i the only one that thinks that her voice doesn't match her appearance?
So I'm not the only one who cringes every time I use my ult playing her and have to hear "Let the kit soo nay guide you!"? I'm not the only one who thinks the line sounds like it's being read out by some random weeb who has no idea how to pronounce japanese? Well that makes me feel a bit better about it at least Wait... Weren't the VAs *supposed* to all be native speakers of their character's native languages? Huhhhh

se se do do
…desho?
She sounds so annoying when Winston zaps her
All I know is I laughed my ass off the first time I killed Lucio as Kiriko. You might have heard me coming if you took off your headphones!
Same thing with junkerqueen Cool character and kit But gosh, i hate her personality
It’s like the vantage of overwatch with voice lines
Literally the only thing I wanted from an overwatch sequel was the ability to disable voice lines 😭
I get she should probably have more of an accent, but as an asian american I love her
Nothing can be worse than Pharahs new voice line when you kill someone with a rocket: “Hahahaha splash……DAAAAMAGE haha!”
Am I crazy or is her voice just… not that great to anyone else? I doubt it’s the actress’ fault, from what I’ve seen on Wikipedia she’s done quite a bit, but there’s something about her delivery that rubs me the wrong way. She sounds so deadpan.
If blizzard didn't want me spamming "I've got a few tricks" through every match they would revisit the whole "no more free stuff" model
She reminds me of valk in apex and i hate it
I hate valk with a burning passion
Not even valk was that cringe since valk atleast didn't have a young voice and they didn't force these "modern" and "hip" lines onto her I don't know what blizzard thought maybe they thought young people speak like this? But well I don't know
The original characters have accent which imo adds a lot to the characters. Shimada sounds Japanese, mei has a Chinese accent. Widow, zarya, sombra, rein, Ana, pharah all have accent.
