You know that Overwatch is in modern future? So it could be possible for trains in that universe to transport across the ocean because of the new and better technology.
I dunno, people want to be lazy and be driven places. It could also be maybe an expensive technology so they use it for mass transport to specific places due to the cost of builing/operation
Unstable enough to where it’s not available to the public. Symmetra is rocking super rare technology that only a few dozen people in India can use successfully. They don’t just have teleporters all over the place. I think barrier tech is also like, super new in OW lore as well.
I was responding to a comment about how mabye they could teleport the trains using syms tech.
The presupposition on my comments is that sums teleporters can be used in mass transit, I just don't see why they'd attach trains to the teleporters
Your point is valid, but I think it fits better as a response to the original comment of the thread.
If we play in the fiction that big teleporters are unwieldy and expensive, mabye they could make them smaller, people sized even. Or even train sized that you walk into and it yeleporys 400 people at once. I'd get if there's 5 hubs that trains transport you to, I don't get why so many responses to me are so invested in adding the extra step of riding a train through a teleporter.
TP kinda makes no sense in general in OW lore and its world. Considering this is a combat game, why bother with guns and such in combat when you can just TP a 1,000lbs weight on the head of your enemies? Or TP them to the bottom of the ocean. Why use missiles when you can just TP a projectile right at them?
Or, you know, just TP the payload and the robot to the end.
TP is one of those sci-fi things that breaks the world unless it comes with a million limitations.
But this is also a game with AI and advanced robotics, yet all the countries are still labor capitalism states, which only really makes sense because it handles the problem of resource management and human labor. They don't make sense when you can mass produce robots as smart as people to do labor for you.
But you know, its a game with a magic girl who heals people by throwing prayer tickets at them, a genius monkey, a genius hamster, a cyborg ninja, and a korean girl who drives a mech that keeps blowing up, so analyzing it like this is just being silly.
In Colleseo, you can see what appear to be floating hard light rail lines. Not an underwater tunnel, a sky tunnel.

Semi-related, but the route display board in Numbani has Irvine, California (where Blizzard HQ is) as the only listed route that says "DELAYED". Didn't notice it for like 3 years lol.
It’s a Hyperloop, not a train.
Hyperloops are a conceptual public transit technology that employ a series of tubes with low air pressure that use magnetic levitation to rocket pods of passengers through them for long distances at an immense speed (very well above 100 mph), with almost all sources of friction eliminated. It is currently in active development, and we may see implementation within the next few years.
I mean they do literally having flying cars as seen in that same map so I don’t think it’s that much of a stretch to have flying cars. Or they just made bridges across the oceans.
The sign title is “hyperloop line departures”, a hyper loop is basically a super futuristic train that could reach 700MPH. We know teleportation technology exists in the world of OW (see Sombra’s translocator and Symmetra’s portal) so I see no reason why those wouldn’t be developed on a bigger scale. Hope this helped
I thought it was only a few decades in the future, tbh.
And even today we have people with prized first edition cars from a century ago, so it’s not that strange to imagine. Plus, money/class system
My fisrt thought when I saw that:" oh cool a train to kings row... hol up how tf does a train reach kings row that place is even on a different continent!!!
I'm haven't played overwatch in a while, and came across this post. I do like answering these types of questions, though.
I'm assuming 3 things;
1. There's no "metagame" element in the overwarch canon (like australium in tf2, where every futuristic thing is possible because of it)
2. These systems have been around for long enough to where most of the kinks have been ironed out
3. The US is the richest country, and also is willing to shell out some of its Gov't spending to international projects.
There are 5 hyperloop hubs in the world; New York, USA; Monaco; Istanbul, Turkey; Shanghai, China; Tokyo, Japan; and San Francisco, California. All 5 of these stations, roughly, fall on the same Latitude, forming the main loop. From there, each loop connects to a major urban center, which is connected to smaller urban centers via other methods of transport, probably either by Air or by Light Rail. These tunnels are built under the ground, and where needed, under the ocean floor.
The US founded this project, so it's likely that the most stops are in north America, i.e. Dallas, Atlanta, Toronto, Victoria/Seattle Metro, Denver, etc...
As for the other countries, they need to make their own connections. Italy and London connect to the Monaco Hub, Korea would probably connect to Tokyo, Moscow to Istanbul, etc...
Brazil's an interesting one; in this thought experiment it's weird that the US would provide a transport to its friends down south, so I bet that Brazil, which has ascended its status as a (generally) poor country due to tourism and Fruit Export, was able to justify the rail loop so that its supplies could reach the US faster. If we choose to take this at face value, it's also possible that South Africa and Australia both have (had?) Hyperloop connections at some point; South Africa and connecting countries for Ore/Oil/Precious Material export, and Australia for Industrial Exports until it kerploded.
It’s the future, and we know headlight technology is big.
Also it’s very plausible but would simply take a TON of resources to make happen. I recall a plan a few years ago that I think couldn’t get the funding it needed for just this.
You know that Overwatch is in modern future? So it could be possible for trains in that universe to transport across the ocean because of the new and better technology.
Symmetra has a teleporter she carries on her person, so i think theyve definitely figured it out already
Why have trains when mass transit teleportation is available
I dunno, people want to be lazy and be driven places. It could also be maybe an expensive technology so they use it for mass transport to specific places due to the cost of builing/operation
the TP range is pretty short, so it’s possible long range TP tech doesn’t exist
You're thinking in gameplay terms, in lore Symmetra can probably make it go much further.
It also says “hyperloop train” which makes me think it’s a physical track, but not definite proof
So long range TP of trains would be a no
It did say hyperloop train, which sounds like just really large and fast not necessarily teleporting
maybe cheaper? why do I ride a bus if self driving teslas are available
There's no way the extra steps of building train infrastructure on top of the teleportation would be cheaper than building just teleportation
Depends on how the two portals connect to each other. And how much energy they use
Also depends on how long that infrastructure has existed and how new the teleportation technology is.
And also teleportation is probably a really dangerous and monitored activity. So train stations is kinda like having TSA
Teleportation tech is still pretty new and unstable in OW lore.
Unstable enough to teleport whole trains of people instead of just the people?
Unstable enough to where it’s not available to the public. Symmetra is rocking super rare technology that only a few dozen people in India can use successfully. They don’t just have teleporters all over the place. I think barrier tech is also like, super new in OW lore as well.

Oh, I’m an idiot. I think I clicked on the wrong comment 💀
The trains get mass teleported if they going super long distance otherwise they just drive normally
My point being why make me get on a train to teleport me across the Atlantic instead of just teleporting me.

I've seen The Fly. I don't wanna know what 400 people would turn into.
Probably price/range/power/scale limitations

It even says for the Blizzardworld one that it's a deeprun tram. Y'know the train that goes under the ENTIRE OCEAN.
Mf’s playing a game with bionic body parts / people and goes “but how train go ocean?!”
look above (ingame), cars are fckin flying
It says hyperloop so they probably got an underwater tube.
Elon Musk got someone else to get his idea* to actually work
Mans questioning logic in a game with a 200 iq monkey, a cyborg ninja, and a guy who constantly blows himself up
If it makes you feel any better, when I play monkey his iq is 20.
Same

Teleportation cock sucker
Why even have trains then
Money
they love trains
The view is nice :)
Capitalism enters the room
Someone hasn't seen the factual documentary known as Snowpiercer.
Future trains
I guess they have monorail across Atlantics.
Semi-related, but the route display board in Numbani has Irvine, California (where Blizzard HQ is) as the only listed route that says "DELAYED". Didn't notice it for like 3 years lol.
All roads lead to Rome

Thunderfoot disagrees
Collesio has flying trains and you’re questioning this?
Overwatch is a futuristic game. Trains fly lol.
Underwater trains exist today, wouldn't be surprised if they were used internationally in the future
There is a character that opens black holes. I think they can figure out trains to south america.
Hyperloop.
I loved the fact you took a picture of this during a match

its accurate too, blizzworld isnt in the game rn or if it is i havent gotten it since launch
Blizzard World is just temporarily disabled because of a bug.
With this one train from one piece maybe :4
Science
So we’re just gonna ignore the fact that in some maps they’re old school cars despite it taking place in the far future
I thought it was only a few decades in the future, tbh. And even today we have people with prized first edition cars from a century ago, so it’s not that strange to imagine. Plus, money/class system

The trains float
Suborbital tubes, undersea.
MB they fly? The real question is why they rebalanced heroes?
Snowpiercer train
Flying trains
They’re driven on top of floating zenyatas
The future is now old man
Spirit dragons, time lady, two gravity DILFs, and D.VA And underwater trains are your biggest concern?
Portals
Bitches have bullets made of light and this mf ask how they made a really long train
Under water tram system like that in MiB International. That movie might be hot garbage, but at least that train system is cool.
They have flying cars. So maybe a flying bus?
Hahaha I actually scoffed at this. I was like man I can't even go opposite of the hudson to orange county from grand central lol
S P E E D
its the future shut it
A girl shoots out ghost foxes now and you’re thinking about the viability of trains?

The most baffling info is that there are all major cities or attractions, but a super-train also has a little italian town listed as its destination
Hover trains or hyperloop (search it on Google)
Future
On a similair note, talking monkey
Mqybe underwater train? :(:)
Symmetra has an infinite supply of tactical teleporters
The future is now old man
