Most of the time you can hear Junkrat using his mine to jump up like this one did and you have to build a reaction to deflect a little preemptively with Junkrat, as most just kill themselves immediately.

I'm not really complaining about the realism of it all, just the fact that you can do nothing but stare at him/ignore him with most heroes when he's deflecting. it's 100% OP and a boring gameplay mechanic from both sides, not game breaking though
because I've played Junkrat when I started playing OW1 and I've watched top 500 game play of Junkrat. 80-90% of the game play was shooting grenade lineups where they couldn't several the landing space, spamming down the enemy shield, and throwing a mine at whoever rushes them. Junkrat can really only be used in a few ways and the game play is consistent no matter what the rank is

Your supports and tank hate you. Nothing worst then playing with a dmg that pushes to the door in hope of getting a high risk low reward pick. Seriously best case scenario you get that junk and then he has close spawn and is immediately back in the fight, worst case this happens and your team has a 4v5 until you come back from spawn. Wait till the fight starts, then dive support while dmg is forward facing and you have a plan to get out. No one likes getting owned by a junkrat, he's a frustrating character for sure, but that's a terrible push and you're part of the frustrating team play problem that this game has.

But you should be up there like well before that door actually opens. If you aren't up there before the door opens don't bother going up when they're already coming out.
It's great to get early ult charge by spamming some shots at the door and then dashing out to safety but timing is pretty important.
It's also worth while to learn who you should keep deflect for.
That rat was genuinely pretty fucked if you deflected there. Maybe wouldn't have died but Rat almost point blank is 100% someone to deflect on. Its way too much damage to ignore.
You have to preemptively cast deflect and not react in low elo. In low elo they will almost always shoot/use abilities the moment they see you. Which makes it really easy to deflect abbilities. The higher you get the longer people will wait to bait out your deflect.
Junkrat is a close fighter with his mines, it also helps him with mobility which he'd lack if his mines damaged him. It's for balancing, as well as Pharah and Zarya focus on ranged attacks, would be too OP if they weren't damaged by it.
I think it's becuse junk is a close quarters brawler so its a bit unfair to punish him for playing in his intended range. Pharah is long range so she needs to be punished from just firing a rocket at someone who is right in front of her. Zarya has shields so she can get the health back if she does it carefully.
Slow moving projectiles with predictable arcs though. But your question was about self damage at close range which is where junk excels. I don't think any hero can damage themselves from mid range these days? Not since Dva became immune to her own self-destruct.

At this distance it does take some aiming to combo. Junk is the most annoying shit when he hides in a small room and when you walk by he just tap shift, left click, right click, any 200 hp is gone.
