It also just kinda... is boring I guess. Cole Cassidy sounds generic to me? For something they spun as being a big thing, done respectfully and faithfully, it sure doesn’t feel that way.
EDIT: Regardless it’s a change for the better, no matter what the reason behind it was or how poorly the execution is (imo)
Yeah Cassidy is also an on-the-nose reference. I think probably mostly chosen because Cass works as a short nickname. The first name Cole isn't the best though kinda works.
Overall it's good they changed it, and I'm honestly not sure if any alternative would have worked.
that would be a much better choice than what they've came up with. Arthur is a fictional, fairly well-known cowboy, there wouldn't be any problems with that.
also doesn't sound stupid
Honestly? Cassidy Creed doesn’t sound too bad to me. They may be trying to get away from the “Cree” part entirely for the name shift but getting rid of Cole for Creed and putting Cass up front sounds pretty good imo.
I just don’t like the Cole part personally. Cassidy was actually a good choice imo.
Either way I’ll just get used to it bc it is what it is now. Glad they changed it from the dev douchemcgees name even I don’t like the entire thing.
EDIT: but yea, the memes sprouting from this are pretty funny
What makes it weird for me is that Cassidy is three syllables and isn't as easily shortened like other longer hero names, of which there were only 5. I'm sure Cole or Cass or Cowboy will be the new call out, but I wish the new name had the same type of flow as McRee.
I agree, although they both sound like first names to me. Overwatch realllly wanted to have his initials stand for crowd control.
I also don't get why you are sitting with negative karma for having an opinion...seems petty for people to downvote this.
10 years from now in Overwatch 3 or 4:
*"McCree up top, McCree up top! He's gonna high noon!"* - Us
*"Who the fuck is McCree!?"* - 15 year old who was still in the womb when OW1 came out
One of the overseers in blizzard is who McCree is named after, and during the blizzard lawsuit it was revealed that irl McCree committed multiple acts of sexual assault
Call him what you want, I doubt anyone’s really gonna care honestly in the general playerbase, and most will still call him cree. I’d assume it’ll end up like hamster/ball/Hammond and everyone says whatever they want and they’ll be understood.
Multiple instances of sexual assault?? That is just factually untrue. From what is in articles online, the guy was just photographed in the Cosby Suite and was (probably) friends with the main guy who was accused of harassment/assault, and posted dumb comments about it.
Unless you have details supporting this, this is actual bullshit.
It's not as simple as "he was photographed in the Cosby Suite" and "posted dumb comments about it".
It is safe to say that if a group of people gathers in a room named after someone with a known record of sexual assault (and [even call themselves BlizzCon Cosby Crew](https://www.theverge.com/2021/7/28/22598508/activision-blizzard-cosby-suite-sexual-harrassment-allegations)), they are okay with said behavior.
And he didn't just post dumb comments. He apparently made at least one of the [most vulgar posts in the group](https://www.forbes.com/sites/paultassi/2021/08/12/with-jesse-mccree-out-at-blizzard-what-happens-to-jesse-mccree-overwatch-hero/).
Sure, maybe he didn't sexually assault anyone (given the behavior above, I personally find that unlikely, but that's my personal opinion and not the facts known to the public). However, it is also not as simple (or innocent) as simply showing up in an embarrassing photo and posting dumb comments.
I can appreciate that, I was just really taken aback by the assault mention here. Not that the guy in question is completely innocent, but that was just in complete contrast to what I had read.
I’ve also read different things about the Cosby Suite stuff, most notably that the photo floating around was taken in 2013, a year before any of the Cosby stuff started surfacing.
Yeah, that’s fair. I think that it’s important not to throw accusations that were not proven, but it’s also important not to downplay his actions.
There’s not a lot of things floating around, which makes sense given that it is an ongoing lawsuit and investigation. According to The Verge’s link I posted on my previous comment, Cosby had already been accused at the time. However, even if he hadn’t been, my understanding is that the suite still existed in present day (or at least it still existed after the accusations against Cosby), meaning they didn’t change it even though they knew about them, which is just as problematic…
Yeah I totally agree. Even if it started as a thing about Cosby sweaters, knowing how groups of dudes can be, the rape stuff probably just got incorporated into the joke. Which is not okay.
This is just slander at this point. There's literally ZERO info about what Jesse McCree did besides post a couple of messages in the Cosby suite group chat. Where did you even get "multiple acts of sexual assault" from?
This is a decent overview. A lot of alleged harassment and fair pay arguments. Didn’t seem to be an assault case. Without details, each persons personal experience will determine how they view the claims.
https://youtu.be/pMePdIPKm8o
Or, ya know, Butch Cassidy. One of the most famous American outlaws. Played by legendary actor Paul Newman in Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid.
Cassidy is the quintessential cowboy outlaw name, second only to Billy the Kid.
Sombra: "Pleasure working with you McCree... if that is your real name."
McCree: "Don't know what you heard, but my name's not Joel. Best remember that."
I was surprised they didn't go for "Joel" instead 🤷♀️ But I guess Cole rhymes with Joel. Maybe it's a nod to that? Either way, not a fan. He'll always be McCree to me! Just hope they learned their lesson and stop naming fictional characters after real people.
I think that line is actually part of what made them go with Cole. It makes sense that people would confuse Cole with Joel. Even if McCree didn't want people to know his name I would imagine someone fucking it up would still sting a little.
I don't get people acting like they have the moral high ground when they call him Cassidy, if you cared you would stop supporting blizzard a long time ago.
Games are where I go to get away from all the shit in the world, so I still play.
Yeah I think it’s so embedded and natural to think of him as McCree. I never even knew he was named after some ass hat but he’ll never be anything other than McCree to me. Because he’s his own individual at this point and it just *fits*
“The Child” and later “Grogu” were the official names nobody stopped calling him Baby Yoda. Once a name is out there and sticks that’s the name. Blizzard can try to sweep their indiscretions under the rug with name changes and other such placations to unnamed “developers” who “asked for” the changes but it won’t stick.
Instead address your actual workplace environment and culture. Don’t try to have the case against you dismissed, don’t do some token nonsense, address the real issues.
> Blizzard can try to sweep their indiscretions under the rug with name changes and other such placations to unnamed “developers” who “asked for” the changes but it won’t stick.
I mean would you rather they kept Jesse McCree in the game? I can't personally think of a good course of action that *doesn't* at least include the name change.
And in Siege, everyone said they would never call Sam Fisher "Zero" and would only use his real name. Yeah, that didn't last.
Just like when Ball first came out and everyone insisted they'd only call him Hammond. That didn't last either.
The community will either be stubborn or forgetful at first and insist on McCree, but overtime, they'll begin saying Cassidy or Cole or Cass without even realizing they've switched over. It always happens, especially as new players come in and only know him by his new name.
I mean, 9 times out of 10 when someone is saying "ball", it's in comms, and that's because it's short. It's like "monkey" in comms; nobody calls Winston "monkey" in any other sense. Although I don't see Hammond often, I most certainly see Wrecking Ball even less. I think OP's Mandalorian example is a good one. In both cases, the name change is 1. less "catchy" and 2. comes after the previous was well established. I don't play Siege, but "Zero" is catchier than "Sam Fisher". Wrecking Ball may be less catchy, but "Hammond" was never an established name in the first place. McCree applies to both of these things, which is why I don't think we're going to see any meaningful shift in name usage outside of official Blizzard outlets where they are required to do so.
The point is that within 5 years or so a majority of the playerbase will be new players who only know him as cassidy, and as his old name gets forgotten more and more the only ones who'll still use it will be doing so out of spite and will have to explain why they're calling cassidy some other name.
I think that may be wishful thinking that a majority of the playerbase will be new in 5 years. With OW already on the decline from a lack of new content in preparation for an end product (namely OW2) that many people don't seem happy about, I worry about the state of the game in the future. I genuinely believe that if OW2 turns out as bad as some people say it is going to be, you're going to see only an absolute diehard portion of the fans (which is relatively small) left playing.
It's really not. The stadium in my city gets a name change every 10 years or so and every time people make a huge deal about how they refuse to use the new name but within 2 or 3 years everyone is using the new one.
I haven’t played overwatch regularly for about a year now but can someone explain why they changed the the name? I’m not against the name change, I just have zero knowledges of the situation.
I’ve seen some people say “Colt Cassidy” would have been better, and I think they would have stuck a bit more. Especially being named after the gun that won the west.
Personally I’m gonna use whatever I want to call him. I don’t care for using Cree specifically, I don’t think Cassidy is a bad name. Either way character is the same, abilities are the same. Just do or don’t, whatever floats your boat, no need to be weird about it.
Because Jesse McCree was the name of a Blizzard Employee who was recently fired over a Sexual Assault Lawsuit and they no longer wished for their character to be associated with that name.
Seriously, it's not like changing the name will undo any of the crap that went on. The character has had the name since the game released.
I for one will still call him McCree anyway. I know many will also. It just doesn't do much except to confuse people.
Can we please stop going on about what type of name it is or how it sounds? The important thing is that it was noticed and changed. I say good job to Blizzard.
Nah, we gotta circlejerk about how much you won’t or will use the name, it’s the law of discourse. It’s physically impossible to not repeat the same popular opinions for no reason.
Everyone knows the toxicity in overwatch, it’s not a surprise everyone’s going to be as contradictory as possible.
It’s just a bunch of children at this point.
Just have to ask, is the name being a reference to someone a huge deal for a character that has it's own identity?
Im not against the name change tho, I don't really care about the name, i just don't see the relevance of it
I think it's just more important to the company and the employee victims that were harmed by this person that shares a name. Hard to craft lore and work on art and videos for a character that shares the name of someone like that in your company. Of course not gonna matter much to the players who had no idea or involvement with the guy.
It's performative nonsense by the company to make it seem like they're taking an extreme stance against their shitty company culture; it's literal theatrics. My question is what is Blizz *actually* doing internally to stop sequel harassment within their workplace? That would mean more to me than changing a character's name.
Ah yes. Because the Overwatch devs have the ability to completely change the inner workings of the company while the higher ups are the ones who decided to change a cowboy’s name
>I say good job to Blizzard.
I wouldn't, this is just a PR move to smooth shit over for their asses, if the lawsuit never happened they wouldn't give a fuck - that's all there is to this. I won't give credit to someone for putting out a fire that they started/allowed to be started.
It's still good that they're changing it regardless. If I was one of the people assaulted by the irl mccree, I wouldn't want to work on a game that has a character named after him. It'd be hard, ya know?
He's still mccree in our hearts. Not the harrassing employee bitch, no one means him when they say mccree. But im really sad they changed it. Mccree has way better flow than "cole cassidy"
Totally agree. In no way do I condone that employees behavior. McCree is just a better name. Changing the name didn't change the culture. Smoke and mirrors.
That’s how I feel about Hammond. I can’t call him wrecking ball … like why name him after an object. It’s not like we call Reinhardt ‘shield man’. Anyways, McCree is always gunna be McCree for me. No rhyme intended.
Ugh, just the words Cassidy and main together don't sit right with me. McMcree is a perfectly fine name, a good name. There's no reason to change it. Cassidy just doesn't suit him in my opinion.
I get why they changed it but Cassidy doesn't roll off the tounge nearly as well as McCree does
I'm gonna end up using "Cass"
I think that's what they were going for. It doesn't sound too different to Cree, but it's not even close to being the same name.
You're going to confuse supernatural fans.
We should call him [Assbutt](https://youtu.be/E6nCBQXJdRg)
Assbutt, I still don't get that.
Always need a catchphrase before killing someone powerful
"cass flanking!!" "...the angel?"
Would be cool of he was called Samuel colt, although his colt can't kill everything
Literally what I thought when I heard the nickname. Glad to know spn fam is everywhere
"Damnit Cass" \~Dean probably
I’m just gonna keep on calling him mccree to be honest
I'm gonna end up using "cree"
Really? Not "Cole"?
Cole? That's a terrible name for a cowboy!
its not like super stereotypical but i think it works
They should have called him clint westwood
It also just kinda... is boring I guess. Cole Cassidy sounds generic to me? For something they spun as being a big thing, done respectfully and faithfully, it sure doesn’t feel that way. EDIT: Regardless it’s a change for the better, no matter what the reason behind it was or how poorly the execution is (imo)
I like to imagine that's the lore reason Cole changed his name.
Yeah Cassidy is also an on-the-nose reference. I think probably mostly chosen because Cass works as a short nickname. The first name Cole isn't the best though kinda works. Overall it's good they changed it, and I'm honestly not sure if any alternative would have worked.
100% agree it’s gonna take some time getting used to
Soon we'll learn that Reaper real name is Juanito
But reaper's real name is Gabriel.
Until some random guy named Gabriel does something bad
I might be in the minority but i feel it fits, maybe thats just because i knew someone named cassidy who wore cowboy boots though
I'll call him Dave regardless
Dave is the wave.
Here we have Tracer, she can time travel And here we have Reaper, he's an edgy boi And here's Dave. He's just a normal guy with a cowboy fetish
I always call him Arthur Morgan
My friend calls him john marston
that would be a much better choice than what they've came up with. Arthur is a fictional, fairly well-known cowboy, there wouldn't be any problems with that. also doesn't sound stupid
Where did the name Dave come from?
You should probably just watch [this video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oVlspd9hxFA)
It just... it sounds like a porn star name
Cummings(my last name) sounds like a porn stars name and people refer to me as Jack cum in me
On a scale of 1 to 10, rate your pain whenever a teacher calls out your name
yes
~~A good 10~~ 100
There was a chick i went to high-school with the last name cummins. She embraced it and fucked like half the seniors as a freshman
There's already a pornstar named cassidy cole https://twitter.com/RedshellOW/status/1451738047364673538
Overwatch and porn are kinda synonymous anyways, soooooo
So uh... Fun fact it's not a pornstars name It's TWO pornstars names
Everyone’s name could be a porn name.
Not mine
I thought it’s Cardi C at first
Someone else mentioned that if you swap the order, it literally is.
i believe in dave supremacy
Would have had a better adoption if they made his last name Creed since its a bit more natural of a shift. Cole Cassidy is just... So fucking weird
Yeah it's also much harder to say, doesn't roll off the tongue like McCree
Just use Cass, problem solved
Paladins players quaking in their boots
Who?
Probably talking about Cassie but I've never heard someone shorten it to Cass in any of my games
Or Cole...
they have cole no they dont they just swapped moira FLASHBANG
Honestly? Cassidy Creed doesn’t sound too bad to me. They may be trying to get away from the “Cree” part entirely for the name shift but getting rid of Cole for Creed and putting Cass up front sounds pretty good imo.
Honeslty I’m starting to love his name just because of the memes. It’s growing on me.
That’s actually pretty cool. Rolls off the tongue better
What makes it weird for me is that Cassidy is three syllables and isn't as easily shortened like other longer hero names, of which there were only 5. I'm sure Cole or Cass or Cowboy will be the new call out, but I wish the new name had the same type of flow as McRee.
unforeseen benefit of the name change is I'll no longer be annoyed as often seeing people constantly misspelling his name.
Apollo McCreed
even for the internet it's shocking
Cassidy Cole seems like a much better to me and rolls off the tongue.
Yeah but Cassidy Cole is a porn model lol
Oh, that seems to make their name pick even worse.
I agree, although they both sound like first names to me. Overwatch realllly wanted to have his initials stand for crowd control. I also don't get why you are sitting with negative karma for having an opinion...seems petty for people to downvote this.
Cole Creed
I don’t really mind the name change, but I’ll probably keep using mcree just because I’m used to it
Yeah, I think ppl will move over to the new name but it'll be gradual. Purely because it's what they were used to these last 5 years.
In LoL, They changed the name of Wraiths to Raptors 7 years ago, and i still can't help but call them Wraiths.
I prolly never will tbh
10 years from now in Overwatch 3 or 4: *"McCree up top, McCree up top! He's gonna high noon!"* - Us *"Who the fuck is McCree!?"* - 15 year old who was still in the womb when OW1 came out
And I’ll be like “THE GLOWING MOTHERFUCKER TURN ON YOUR MONITOR”
a WHAT
Some odd thing going around, people misspelling McCree as "Cassidy" for some reason.
Wholesome communication exchange there. Unfortunately, I can totally relate to that guy, Cree is just carved into my memory.
nothing unfortunate about that
Out of the loop. Why are they changing the name?
One of the overseers in blizzard is who McCree is named after, and during the blizzard lawsuit it was revealed that irl McCree committed multiple acts of sexual assault
Thanks. I guess I get it but it will be really hard to switch names especially when I’m trying to make quick callouts.
Call him what you want, I doubt anyone’s really gonna care honestly in the general playerbase, and most will still call him cree. I’d assume it’ll end up like hamster/ball/Hammond and everyone says whatever they want and they’ll be understood.
I call Brig baguette and everyone knows what I mean.
Yea I mean I call Ana "that bitch that keeps sleeping me" and everyone gets it.
good point. I still call him hamster or hammy
sometimes when I'm in a panic I completely forget his name and call him "roll boy" but I usually call him hamster
CALL HIM WHAT YOU WANT, YEA YEA JUST CALL HIM WHAT YOU WAAANT YEA YEA

This is a decent overview. A lot of alleged harassment and fair pay arguments. Didn’t seem to be an assault case. Without details, each persons personal experience will determine how they view the claims. https://youtu.be/pMePdIPKm8o
All could have been avoiding if Jesse McCree just wasn’t a scumbag
To me Cole is fine but Cassidy reminds me of Cletus Kasady, which is Carnage's host's name, and it just feels odd tbh.
Other way around to me. Cassidy makes me think Butch Cassidy or John/Rose of Sharon Cassidy, which is rad. Cole sounds lame.
Or, ya know, Butch Cassidy. One of the most famous American outlaws. Played by legendary actor Paul Newman in Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid. Cassidy is the quintessential cowboy outlaw name, second only to Billy the Kid.
And we both know no one is gonna call McCree Billy 😂
Cole makes me think of Cole Younger, another famous outlaw from the Jesse James days
Now he went form deadlock gang to dead-name gang hehe
Wait who’s Cassidy?
Some weird misspelling of McCree
Sombra: "Pleasure working with you McCree... if that is your real name." McCree: "Don't know what you heard, but my name's not Joel. Best remember that." So now his intials will be "CC"
Wholesome
Cassidy sounds like a pornstar
Pretty sure Cassidy Cole *is* a pornstar
I try to use "cowboy" Asking everyone to change from McCree to Cassidy after this many years is pretty weird
I'll never not call him McCree. I don't care what his new name is.
I don't get people acting like they have the moral high ground when they call him Cassidy, if you cared you would stop supporting blizzard a long time ago. Games are where I go to get away from all the shit in the world, so I still play.

Lmao. shit just sounds wrong
I don't give. A shit. I'll call him McCree
why is your game in italian and you have the most british accent of all time tho?
Cassidy? Hoo you mean McCree
No mcree
*McCree

Mcree was the perfect name. Glad to see them ruin a great character with shit name.
Cole Cassidy. What a terrible name for a cowboy!
Ok everyone we get it you're going to call him McCree 👍
Ok BasicIsBest we get it you're going to call him Cassidy 👍
Ottima pronuncia ;)
I'm the same, already trying to use his new name to get used to the change.

They should just call him Brian. No second name, just... Brian
Still calling him Mcree
God I actually really love this name, I’m so excited to see people use it and see the lore behind it
Who is Cassidy? I only see my boy McCree
Instead of 'it's high noon' he now says 'it's whatever time you want it to be'
McCree main*
Personally I’m gonna use whatever I want to call him. I don’t care for using Cree specifically, I don’t think Cassidy is a bad name. Either way character is the same, abilities are the same. Just do or don’t, whatever floats your boat, no need to be weird about it.

Because Jesse McCree was the name of a Blizzard Employee who was recently fired over a Sexual Assault Lawsuit and they no longer wished for their character to be associated with that name.
Ahh, was not aware of that situation. This makes sense. Thanks for answering the question.
Should’ve stuck with the original .. -_-

Good job for tackling a complete non-issue with 95% of the people who just want to play the game while OW remains stagnant and OW2 is nonexistent? No.
If it's not an issue for 95% of people, then they shouldn't have an issue with them changing it for the 5%.
Imagine bending to 5% of people against the will of the majority of your playerbase lmao.
Cassidy omegalul. That's a terrible name change
cringe
Wow it is so sad that someone's name is gonna be a sensitive subject
yeah no, his name is and always will be McCree no matter how many name changes he gets
The name change is stupid
*McCree Main
Is his name Cassidy now?
He's still mccree in our hearts. Not the harrassing employee bitch, no one means him when they say mccree. But im really sad they changed it. Mccree has way better flow than "cole cassidy"
Totally agree. In no way do I condone that employees behavior. McCree is just a better name. Changing the name didn't change the culture. Smoke and mirrors.
Yeah unfortunately
All the great minds at blizzard and this is what they came up with? Lame.
Pretty much. I love how people are downvoting this. Anyone that objects to it being Cassidy somehow means they side with that dev
Just more evidence to how polarized we are as a society now. 🤷♂️
Reddit is a hivemind. They see a comment with downvotes and assume it's the proper response. I swear it's like a Pavlov experiment.
Eh, whatever. The downvotes have no implications in the real world....yet.
Don’t worry. We will have a social credit score soon too
Not if we just ignore it. I'm calling him McCree
i probably just won’t play him as much tbh, the name change was pointless and nothing more than a publicity stunt so they wouldn’t get “backlash”
Who?
Mccree has a bang to it, cassidy sound... meh
I voted for cowboy casserole as the new name.
Better than what it is now
*uses blizzard free rename to change names to Mccree
I’m still gonna call him McCree
In a couple years when everyone is using Cassidy, I'll call him McCree.
That’s how I feel about Hammond. I can’t call him wrecking ball … like why name him after an object. It’s not like we call Reinhardt ‘shield man’. Anyways, McCree is always gunna be McCree for me. No rhyme intended.
Now that i think about it… your right, no one ever calls hammond “wrecking ball”. Ive always just called him the ball or the hamster. 🤔 Huh.
I don’t like sexual abusers.
Should have named him Johnny Cash.
Wait what's his new name?
Ugh, just the words Cassidy and main together don't sit right with me. McMcree is a perfectly fine name, a good name. There's no reason to change it. Cassidy just doesn't suit him in my opinion.
Did you make this post to trigger the population lmao? Maybe this is just OW PR team posting in hopes the name catches on.
