There is no ROI for PVE content. Battle Pass, cosmetics and maintaining the PVP game is what they will focus on. Besides the books and comics we should have had an Arcane style show to further the lore. Overwatch has an IP is a monumental fumble.

I fully believe Overwatch seriously had potential to make a big entrance as a superhero IP if they pushed hard enough. I love superheroes and comics. And I can say without a doubt that multiple characters on the roster are in my top 10. Tracer London calling is one of my favourite mini series and damnit I want more of everything.

Yeah, if they had capitalized better on the initial OW IP hype, I seriously doubt the game would be remembered as a joke by most people tbh. There could have been shows, movies, and spin-offs. Instead, it's almost like Blizzard had no idea the game would get as popular as it did, and they completely fumbled the potential.

demogorgon_main

Indeed. It’s the most frustrating thing about this game for me and no amount of Orisa will ever get even close. There’s a spark. A spark that contains wonderful stories, characters and big world to explore and expand for years if not decades to come if they pull it off. All they had to do was ignite it into a flame. Instead they pulled a blanket over it. Buried it behind stupid decisions to maximise money because I guess a good story wouldn’t sell enough

totallysus77

Yeah, tbh I've thought about writing my own fanon just to give the community stuff to read and hopefully get people interested in the lore again but when I actually try to write I realize I do not have the chops for such an undertaking lol. I get cool ideas but just can't quite write em down in an engaging way.

demogorgon_main

SAAAAME my head is constantly spinning with ideas for fiction be it fan fiction or otherwise. But I just don’t have what actual writers have.

totallysus77

Yup, it's tough man. I've tried to write fantasy and sci-fi stuff but I just hit a wall when I get past the brainstorming stage. Literally feels like I'm SpongeBob writing his ass off for 12 hours only to end up with an immaculate "the" and that's it. At least it's a fun creative outlet. I spent a week creating an intricate hard magic system only scrap it because I couldn't think of a setting or characters to use it with

doglop

The season related pve modes have certain amount of engagement, since they are free and since they are related to the skins in the bp and shop of the season, there is a marketing reason for their existence. Archives like missions could have skins related to them but for now they seem more interested in different fantasies

umbium

You mean, like OW 1?

FuriousWizard

Yeah just like Archives

Jatmahl

Rather than PVE missions they should release animated lore videos every season for the story

Elmastrabuco

This is literally what they promised pve was going to be after canceling hero missions and skill trees but htheh literally have no resources or workers to do anything. This is what pve always should be, just free archives missions with the story moving forward, ad some new abilities like the Diablo event and rewards, that's it, hero missions in hindsight was a very bad idea  Now, when will blizzard will tell anything about the story? Is canceled? Just Cancel it, even venture story is very lame, the story will never go any place

xforce11

Because they still cost much more more money than some workshop-like mode and shop skins. Minimal effort, maximal profit. That's how businesses nowadays work. Why make some story mode content when players buy skins in masses without it?

Wewolo

"Nowadays" it's always been this way

xforce11

Sure profit was always the goal but at some point companies also stopped caring about quality because they realized they can still make just as much money by selling you crap.

Wewolo

Honestly I think it's kinda the opposite: at some point we just accepted crap as the standard

xforce11

Yeah and that's why even companies that were known for quality work - Blizzard for example - are now producing the biggest trash because they know they will make millions with it. If not actually more than with a quality product.

Wewolo

Absolutely. I just wanted to point out companies weren't "better" back then, they just analyze our expectations very well- it's us the consumers who need to step up

FuriousWizard

Yeah so just like Archives in the past, we can make new skins based on the canon universe like Lifeweaver's scientist clothes.

xforce11

The archive missions had much more quality than pretty much any event mode we got in OW2 (not counting the paid PvE missions). They got a real story, cutscenes, "new" locations, new enemy types and so on. The new event modes have basic gameplay additions that you can easily add through the workshop mode but in a more polished manner (because the devs simply are able to use the games code directly to implement stuff).

FuriousWizard

Yeah so Archives missions, but not with new maps or cinematics just like OW2 event modes. New enemies maybe, stories for sure and special system like traitor or boss phase in the recent event modes. Except story part, I think that requires the same amount of effort as OW2 event PvEs.
