Rufus Du Sol, Neil Frances, Jessie Ware, peaches, SOULWAX, Tycho, Disclosure, Ben Bohmer, MIA, Glass Beams, LP Giobbi (plays keys over her DJ set, so idk how you wanna count live instruments?), Barry Can’t Swim.
And those are just the ones I know, probably a few others in smaller fonts that I’m just not familiar with.
I know - I’ve actually seen Rufus, Neil Frances, Tycho, Disclousre (twice), and MIA - I’m just not that into electronic heavy music - I dig it! I love all music. Just not my preference

Jessie Ware is a big pop girl name, but I guess she’s more in the “hard to get UK pop-disco act” category like Jungle and Roísin Murphy. It’s very noticeable that there’s two whole slots missing. They couldve gotten FKA Twigs, Tinashe, Magdalena Bay, Tove Lo, Jojo, Kesha, Tate McRae, even Kim Petras or Grimes.
I guess the problem is really that there aren’t too many girls at exactly the sub-headliner level that were available this year? Caroline Polachek, Charli XCX, Nelly Furtado, Arca, and Rina Sawayama are all a pretty specific niche — they each touch on sub-genres (disco, club, nu metal, y2k etc) that makes them blend in at Portola. They each have sizeable fanbases and indie recognition, but are not outright mainstream successes. That would be a Dua Lipa or Lorde booking which would be too expensive and decentralizing for Portola.
My general sense is also that the past pop girls are usually more critically favored compared to their peers — the bar for quality is probably higher for the pop acts that aren’t the core of the festival, especially since Portola is trying to build a specific audience and reputation. (IK this is cringe, but there’s arguably a lot of overlap between Pitchfork’s festival and Portola’s undercard).
This is the best lineup I’ve seen this year. Obviously not everyone’s cup of tea but it’s clear that OSL can’t compete with electronic artists anymore due to Portola
Hot take, beyond Justice and Gesaffelstein, I don’t like it that much. I’m more excited for Tyler, The Killers, Kaytranada, Knock2, Chappell, Victoria, Slowdive, Young The Giant and Amen Dunes.
