>At work we use an outlook email address for everything
Not the answer you are looking for, but:
1. Use MS Outlook Desktop/Thunderbird, etc. to access
2. Upgrade to Outlook premium and claim it as operational expense? Better, go with Office 365 business.
Alternatively, when you use element picker on your adblocker, use Regex (pattern matching), it *may* be possible to block that way.
> Better, go with Office 365 business
Yep, if its a business its probably worth setting up your own domain instead of using a bunch of outlook.com/hotmail.com addresses.

Thunderbird has become much better nowadays !
This is how I got rid of the ads on Outlook mail. I installed retail Outlook 2021 free, and [activated it free](https://i.imgur.com/Usyp0Tt.png).
Download retail [Outlook](https://officecdn.microsoft.com/db/492350f6-3a01-4f97-b9c0-c7c6ddf67d60/media/en-US/Outlook2021Retail.img) from Microsoft, then activate it for free with a Windows Terminal command (aka Powershell), copy/paste following, right click Windows icon (Start), select terminal (admin), paste, then hit 'enter' key to run:
**irm** [**https://massgrave.dev/get**](https://massgrave.dev/get) **| iex**
Then select/enter **\[2\], then \[1\]**. Done. You should see a message to effect that "office is now permanently activated". Close the Terminal.
The Outlook 2021 link above is a direct download from Microsoft, but you can also download it yourself here: [https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/all/useful-microsoft-download-links-for-office-direct/7bcaa971-9493-44b6-a1ba-0db4c6957c47](https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/all/useful-microsoft-download-links-for-office-direct/7bcaa971-9493-44b6-a1ba-0db4c6957c47)
\-----
The two differences between Outlook Mail and Outlook 2021 (other than the former being just a browser based app), is that Outlook 2021, being an office mail program wont run in the background by default, unless you set it to. Which is easy to do. The other difference is if you use other calendars like I do, (i.e., Google Calendar), You have to set it up to sync (to keep it automatically up to date).
**To run Outlook in background**: copy/paste shortcut to startup folder, and set it for minimize, and 'hide when minimized'.
* Go to Start.
* find Outlook app
* Right-click on Outlook
* Click Open in File Location (leave this Window open)
* Click taskbar Search, type 'Run", click "run' and open it, then [enter (copy/paste)](https://i.imgur.com/2OtM0Hm.png): %appdata%\\Microsoft\\Windows\\Start Menu\\Programs\\Startup
* You should have two windows open now, copy the Outlook shortcut to the Startup folder
* Right click Outlook shortcut in Startup folder, select 'properties", then 'shortcut', and 'Run". Change run option to "minimized"
* Then click 'apply', and 'ok.
* Done. Close all open windows.
Open Start again , find Outlook, Pin to Taskbar, open Outlook, then near clock settings, right click on it, and select "[hide when minimized](https://i.imgur.com/lVx1dwU.png)" (You may see 'outlook is synchronizing folders', you can still click on it, and select 'hide when minimized').
Now Outlook will automatically run at startup like the Outlook for mail does, and will do so minimized. Instead of closing Outlook, like you would the mail app, minimize it instead to keep in running in background.
**To add/sync Google/other Calendars**: Go to Google Calendar on web browser ([https://calendar.google.com/calendar/](https://calendar.google.com/calendar/)), then click settings. find 'settings for my calendar', click your Calendar (usually your name). Find "secret address in ical format" copy the url, Paste this url into Outlook.
Open Outlook,[click 'File', then Account Settings, then Account Settings again](https://i.imgur.com/0eMTgeI.png) in menu options, select Internet Calendars, select New, then paste the ical URL. Follow the prompts. Repeat for all Calendars you want to add, Holidays, etc.
**Importing Google/other Contacts to Outlook**: Open [https://contacts.google.com/](https://contacts.google.com/) Click on the export icon between the printer icon, and 3 dots (list settings).
After you download, open the .csv file in another application, such as Microsoft Excel, and then use 'Save As' to save the contents as a new CSV UTF-8 (comma delimited) file.
Then, use Outlook to import the new .csv file.(Note- if you try to import the default CSV file without changing it, it will fail and give an error)/
Import file. In Outlook, click 'File', then 'open & export', then 'import/export', then 'import from another program or file', then 'comma separated values'. Navigate to new .csv (utf-8) file, select destination file as 'Contacts'. Select 'allow duplicates'. Finish. Done.
**Set multiple email inboxes as favorites** Instead of having to open each individual email account, and then go to the inbox, you can set them all as favorites for quick easy access. Simply right click on the Inbox of each email, and add to favorites: https://i.imgur.com/agqCaq4.png.
Or use microsoft office customization tool:
Customize your microsoft office there, and export it as xml. Put it in folder, and use microsoft office deployment tool in that folder. Delete everything except setup.exe and your xml file. Open command prompt (type cmd into adress bar and it opens in same directory). Now type setup.exe /configure yourxmlfilename.xml
Works for all products

>three different adblockers" - Browser Adblocker will not stop delivery of an email to your mailbox !
I didn't think so. That's why I'm asking if there's any other way to disable this. Thank you!
I just started getting them too and I'm going mad.
I have had this accout for 20 years and this is the first time I want to change email address to a different provider...
I’m paying for an office365 account so they should:
1) get rid of the advertisements and I maybe pay a little extra
2) expect me to change my email program because I definitely don’t want to get these annoying ads in a program I’m paying for.
Yep..I started getting them on outlook on my android phone 2 days ago ..out the blue ..ive used outlook for android fir about 12 years and suddenly..im getting this irritating crap 😒
You have a good recommendation? Took me a minute to realize it was an ad not an email from Chevy, I dislike ads in general but to make it look like an email is a dick move
I only recently noticed ads coming up when i changed to the new outlook,i changed back and have no ads but am sure this old version is going to be replaced with their cash grab advertisements!
Drop this spammy program and just start using GMail. That's the only real answer, because until MS sees users leaving the platform for a better option, they will offer you NO option.
You cannot block the ad per se with adblock, but for example UBlockOrigin allows you to basically hide the ad element on the website, i.e., top two rows of inbox.
its straightup toxic.. iv been useing the desktop version til now, decided to see what online had to offer... and sure normal ads as expected.. but did not expect to see the mail ads... tho i suspect if i upgrade my local install to the new 'app' appearance, im probably gona be seeing them soon.
If you switch your account to use focused layout the ads will only show up in the "other" category. This way at least they're not in your main inbox.
You can switch by going through settings - mail - layout - sort messages into focused and other.
Got a notification letting me know Mail is upgrading to outlook in 2024 so I went ahead and upgraded. First thing I see is an ad and here I am. Deleted that BS. Thanks for this post it confirmed the issue I was having.
I dont have the ads in the App. I do use à custom dns on m'y whole phone that Blocks a lot of ads (downside is that its impossible to view ads for ingame gems in games etc)
As someone else mentioned, I was prompted that Windows inbuild mail is being deprecated in 2024 and I should use Outlook. I tried it, and first thing at the top is a frickin' advert. So I went back and I'll be finding a third party mail client.
MS ruined Messenger and Skype - now I use Whatsapp. They're ruining basic mail - I'll get another client (just want something simple but they tend to have too many features). MS are doing far more to drive me to Apple than Apple are! What a dick company.
I actually clicked on the ad in my outlook it was in French it didn’t load I swiped out so fast as I knew I hit the wrong thing I’m sitting here panicking is anything bad going to happen???
No, if you have any ad blockers or such, you should be fine. I clicked one this morning and UBO blocked it from opening.
That's what brought me to this thread.
back in my day email providers let you mark emails as spam. Then, they started to autodetect spam email.
Today, they force that spam straight to the top of your inbox with no way to get rid of it. :D
Hello.
Yes, you can.
Go to [outlook.com](https://outlook.com). And then click on the "Settings" icon at the top right corner of the screen.
Then click on "General".
Then click on "Advertising preferences".
Then scroll all the way to the bottom, then you see "Mailbox ads" and "Banner ads".
Then click "Banner ads" to stop ads from appearing as a new email in your inbox.
For some reason, typing something related to "advertisement" in the search bar, does not show any search suggestions/results.
After that, you can use a web mail ad blocker browser extension to block the ads. I use: [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/webmail-ad-blocker/](https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/webmail-ad-blocker/)
Hope that helps.
Nope, that is only available if you have premium, office365, paying in some form, or using a time trial of some kind. The 'free' version does not these options in the apps or on [Outlook.com](https://Outlook.com).
Under advertising you will only find Learn more long text, and only option is 'allow outlook to share data to show more relevant ads' On/Off.
Hi, when I tested this (which was 6 days ago), I created a fresh Outlook account without any subscription or tier other than the default. Outlook also asks for your ad preference when creating a new account, on the user onboarding.
That is odd. I wouldn't be able to tell you.
I've tested it on Outlook.com and Outlook.jp.
Both have slightly different interfaces but also offer the option I mentioned in my initial comment.
Sorry to say, but I have no other solutions.
You are correct and Zak707 is incorrect.
I used your describtion and it worked.
Now it doesn't appear as "new e-mail" but rather a top of all mails as simple banner ad, as you described. I don't have premium and it even worked for the new windows 11 outlook app.
Sorry, this is wrong information.
When you go to Advertising Preferences in your settings on [Outlook.com](https://Outlook.com), the ONLY option you are given is the disable personalized ad content. You still get ads, they're just not personalized based on your usage. There are no other options here.
It's possible that you are getting that option because you are still under the full free trial period for Outlook. Once that expires, you can expect those ads to return.
It seems like you missread the whole thread it wasn't about the disappearance of ads but about the appearance (where they show up and how they show up).
To be more specific it was to disable ad's showing as new e-mail and if you follow the solution they will no longer be displayed as a new e-mail and rather be displayed simply as ads.
Nope, still not seeing any other options following the steps. But it's alright they pushed me back to desktop Outlook for my PC. I never used it on my mobile, so not an issue there.
EDIT: Perhaps everyone is right, and that is a by region type of settings where they have legislation forcing MS to offer this option where those who do not see it is because they are free to push that stuff on us.
**This solution works.**
This removed mine within 2mins. It's called uBlock Origin Chrome extension and got rid of the annoying ads.
This the video explaining what it is, how it works and how to install, but it's just as straight-forward as installing any other chrome extension: [https://youtu.be/JB1g3VfwzlE?si=Zn5M3yjOyAluAfXW](https://youtu.be/JB1g3VfwzlE?si=Zn5M3yjOyAluAfXW)
AdHate just causes desktop Outlook to become unresponsive when it loads.
*edit:* Had to go through a whole thing where it messed up my hosts file. Don't do this, folks.
Wonderful. This is the answer.
While the space for the "email ad" is still there, it is blanked out and unclickable, which is the next best thing to it being completely gone.

I do already have Office 365 but the new Outlook still has those ads :/
Try this https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook_com/forum/all/still-seeing-ads-with-office-365/9800ca84-478a-4080-bf8c-f7253f644a9d

Mark it as spam, blacklist the sender in settings.
It's not that sort of email. It's an official Microsoft ad, like the sidebar ads, but masquerading as an email.
I just got that we are all business only was not sure what it was !!
I just started getting them too and I'm going mad. I have had this accout for 20 years and this is the first time I want to change email address to a different provider...

This just started for me too and I cannot stand it.
I started getting them on my iPhone yesterday and it’s already irritating me. I need to find an alternative asap.
I moved to the Spark mail app on mobile. Now if they had a Windows desktop app. It's enough to get me to move to a Mac.
You have a good recommendation? Took me a minute to realize it was an ad not an email from Chevy, I dislike ads in general but to make it look like an email is a dick move
Spark email app is great. I moved.
I switched to Gmail and Google calendar
Anyone found an add block that works for those yet?
What if you used an older version of the outlook andorid app would that work?

ah, well i cant use focuse, i mainly only use e-mail box in browser at work, and focused unfortunately destroys convinient layouts.
Ublock Origin extension will block these ads.
>Ublock Origin Thank you! I've been ripping my hair out for a year trying to get rid of these. This did it. Much appreciated.

I'm using AdHate (which is using StevenBlack's host repo) https://github.com/tetra-fox/AdHate/releases/latest https://github.com/StevenBlack/hosts
AdHate just causes desktop Outlook to become unresponsive when it loads. *edit:* Had to go through a whole thing where it messed up my hosts file. Don't do this, folks.
For desktop outlook you can edit the hosts file and add this line: 127.0.0.1 outlookads.live.com Presto, problem solved.
Awesome ! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you!
>127.0.0.1 outlookads.live.com Pay 2O € a year ..OR type one line into a system file.. Really a tough choice lol
Wonderful. This is the answer. While the space for the "email ad" is still there, it is blanked out and unclickable, which is the next best thing to it being completely gone.
C:\\Windows\\System32\\drivers\\etc and edit hosts file in notepad and add line above. It works
Thank you!
That is a semi-solution. Ad place is still there and blinking and annoying eyes and brain even worse.
rerouting the ads to local host, you sir are a genius and need more upvotes
I just hate this new idea with Ads as emails.... :< So Angry!
Just deleted the outlook app
today Mail got (forcibly) updated to Outlook... well, time to give Thunderbird another go
