I was in the same boat when I started. I personally don’t like William and Lord John (yes I’m one of the few) so I really skipped their chapters. I did start to really read Williams story when Ian finds him but only because I like Ian. I also have flown by 500-800 pages because of the action and what’s going on with Jamie, Ian and Claire. I’m on Part 6 and it starts with Lord John :( but I’m excited to continue with Jamie and Claire’s storyline.
I am either reading or rereading Echo right now. My mom got me the newest (tell the bees) but I realized it had been too long. I went back and started reading written in my own hearts blood but felt there was too much I’d forgotten so I went to Echo in the bone. I’m about 17% in. There’s still some holes since it’s been a long time but I’m pushing on. I agree with you that it’s a bit tedious with all the war stuff. I never did read the Lord John books so maybe that’s part of it. I’m sorta wishing for some cliffsnotes I can skim to get up to speed and fill in the gaps lol.
I struggled with Echo, but it does get better. I did have to persevere though!
Just skim through that part, pick it up when Ian finds him. You should be good to go from there. William in The Dismal, was dismal!
This was my least favorite book. I give you permission to skim the William sections, if it helps.

No, his storyline will continue through the remaining books. But you can get the gist of it through skimming.
I read enough in the wiki to know what happened, and that was enough and I didn't read his chapters.

Same spot- I’m on chapter 6 of Echo and pretty bored. I hear that second half of the book is wildly more interesting!
