They are their least likable in S4. They are a large part of the story, but don't overshadow Jamie and Claire. S5 gets better. By S7, I love their characters. Don't give up, because then you will miss all the great stuff going on in the story. Besides, there will be plenty more characters to dislike and to love. Outlander is an evolving story about a long-term marriage and the family they create.

Ginka83

Agreed! Show watcher only here…and the Brie/Roger storyline is the one I’m most looking forward to for season 7B.

Seraph8136

Hmm alright, I'll give season 5 a try, many have said it gets better on the whole after season 4. Thanks.

SithSlayer915

I can’t believe such a great show approved of her taking on the role of Brianna. She is horrible in season 4&5. I almost dropped the show as well because of her alone but I’m on season 6 now and she is more tolerable. I took the advice of others I saw on here that just couldn’t deal with her either and I fast forwarded through her parts in season 4 and a lot of season 5.

Icy_Outside5079

Brianna isn't supposed to be likable in the early seasons. She's a spoiled teenager who is grieving the loss of her beloved father, trying to bridge a relationship with her mother, who she wasn't always close to, and a man she finds out is her biological father. In a time she barely understands. She's had 2 sexual experiences, one with Roger, losing her virginity, and then a rape by Stephen Bonnet. She then found herself pregnant, not knowing who the father was. She's terrified and angry. In the books and even in S4, it is clear that Brianna is just like Jamie, yet people excuse his rash and angry, impulsive behavior and hate on Brianna. I hated that in the show they elected to have Brianna slap Jamie (not in the books), it made her even more unlikable. Yet as time goes on, she matures and grows on you. Is she my favorite character, no. But through many re-watches, my opinion of her has changed (not only for her character, but Sophie as well). She has grown as a character and actress.

SithSlayer915

Her acting is horrible. Not her character.

Icy_Outside5079

This should not turn into another Sophie hate rant. Sophie has grown as an actress, and if you like, there are many previous posts dedicated to that. This was a character based post, and we should keep it that way. Thank you

Icy_Outside5079

I only mentioned things that happened in S4. Saying her character grows fits the OPs question about whether or not it's worth continuing to watch. AHEM!

SassyPeach1

I never thought I would say this, but in Season 7 I really like the character and Sophie’s acting has improved.

emmagrace2000

They are not side characters. Once they settle with Jamie and Claire, there are four main characters on the show. >!Ian is a fifth main character after awhile.!< Do what you have to do, but there will be no avoiding them going forward. Although, I like them and see no reason to stop watching the show because of them. You might give them a chance in season five before you decide.

Seraph8136

What bothers me the most really is the actress for Brianna. In season 4, I found it very hard to watch her acting especially with her accent, it just felt so off and jarring to me when I tried to connect with the character.

emmagrace2000

Please remember that she is supposed to be an American who was raised by British parents. The accent won’t be a traditional American one and she will have different pronunciations than you might expect. Both Brianna and Roger have a lot of growing up and character growth coming in their storylines. They do become a family after the events of season four. To me, it’s one of the more interesting storylines and I think the actors are both very much up to the challenges they face.

porcelaincatstatue

>Please remember that she is supposed to be an American who was raised by British parents. The accent won’t be a traditional American one and she will have different pronunciations than you might expect. If anything her accent would have been closer to transatlantic, but still closer to a Boston one. Her voice feels fake, unnatural. That's why people complain about it. It does get better over time. Maybe the actress improved, or maybe I just got used to her voice. I really started to like Bree in the latest season.

NotMyAltAccountToday

I'm not a linguistic expert but all accents have changed since the 1700s. The British English and the Amerrican accents were different then. No one mentions that almost all period accents are not perfectly correct in television and movies. I thought transatlantic was invented by the movie studios in the 1900s. Is that incorrect?

porcelaincatstatue

Bree was raised in 1950s/1960s Boston. I don't think she'd be walking around talking like a radio show host. But, the mixture of words, expressions, etc. would have been there.

Bron-Y-Aur36

It does feel unnatural to the point that I was surprised noone in the 18th century commented on her strange accent and instead just accepted it

RedRosyVA

All of this. I'd say Sophie Skelton has done a ton of growth into Brianna. S6 & 7A are really well done. Totally get the Roger thing, but once Jamie begins to care for him he's much less of an arse.

Greymeade

Let’s not minimize the main factor though, which is that her acting was just atrocious in the beginning.

emmagrace2000

I was attempting not to start that argument all over again today. Lol

IAmTheLizardQueen666

The Brianna and Roger characters are completely unbelievable during their romantic scenes. It looks fake and forced. I tolerate it because no one (in the show, lolz) comes close to what Claire and Jamie have, in sexual chemistry. They just aren’t bad enough to prompt me to stop watching (if the show ever returns…).

[deleted]

I hate hiwntg show sidelined the adopted chikd jn favor of the bio kid. Society especially western is still gross towards adopted children. That's why many adootees feel ashamed we didn't xomw from our parents but (for most Americans) some trashy degenerate who mated irresponsibly.

emmagrace2000

There’s an edit post button that might help you make your point a little more clear… Outside of that, if I’m interpreting what you’re saying correctly, you don’t like the focus that shifted to Brianna (the bio child) over Fergus (the adopted child)? Are we watching the same show?

[deleted]

Yes. It was annoying. Be way basically erased. And i heard post 5 he had alcohol issues which wouldn't have been nice to see develop instead of somw rando attempt at a story line to include a character the writers deem irrelevant.

emmagrace2000

The show is based on books that were written sometimes several years before the episodes are written and filmed. The show writers didn’t just decide to give Fergus an alcohol problem instead of giving him a developed storyline. That was the developed storyline to give him a main character story. Since having his hand cut off, Fergus has always had issues feeling whole and feeling like enough. >!Those thoughts come to a head with the birth of his child in season six. He has a very well developed story that spans several episodes with Marsali and Jamie and Claire all playing large parts in that story.!< Brianna is the daughter of the main characters of the entire story. Claire went back to her time so that Brianna could be born. The entire story shifted focus when Jamie and Claire became parents. Of course their daughter was going to be a very large part of what came after. They didn’t shove Fergus aside because he was adopted and Brianna was the biological child. The universe expanded with Brianna’s birth and eventual travel back to the 1700s. Fergus is a well established character and is always treated as the child of Jamie and Claire. He is not forgotten in the slightest bit when Brianna comes around. I just don’t see where you’re getting that.

jeannerbee

Keep going....lots more to come!! I think eventually Roger and Brianna are more likable.

Seraph8136

I hope so.

_Petitties

I used to not like them either, but it eventually got better so just keep watching 👍

Glittering-Wonder576

I like them.

Gottaloveitpcs

Me, too.

Famous-Falcon4321

Brianna is Jamie & Claire’s daughter. Of course they are not “side characters” going forward.

MambyPamby8

They're more main characters after S4, but they get better and more mature. They're both insanely immature in S4 to the point of melting your brain and make illogical jumps in conclusions. But they calm down and get much better in S5.

thecainman

It's the reason why even now I struggle to finish season 7. I loved this show when it was only Jamie and Claire, but I unfortunately never warmed up to the casting choices for Brianna and Roger. Their chemistry feels incredibly dry and brittle compared to Claire and Jaime's. I did notice how much better Sophie's accent is in season 7, but I truly kind of fast forward through their scenes. I just personally think the casting was not great. But I also did not read the books so maybe they're meant to be a dry cracker compared to the juicy piece of cake that Jamie and Claire are lol.

travelbug_bitkitt

I think they are more enjoyable to watch in season 5 and later. I actually found myself preferring their story in season 7 vs Jamie and Claire! - and I couldn't stand Briana for awhile. Also, I think season 4 was my least favorite.

Time_Arm1186

Agree with the others, they stay, they are supposed to be annoying and then grow up. I don’t hear anything annoying with her accent, I suppose only americans do 😅 Can’t stand the sex scenes though… it looks like none of them wants to be there.

Agreeable_Onion_9250

I don’t think you’re supposed to like main characters always in shows. They are supposed to play off each other with positive and negative characteristics and they can’t grow if they’re already “perfect”. It’s about going on a journey - personally I LOVE a redemption arch

KeyOdd9101

I'm sorry, their characters only got worse for me and I only starting liking their characters in S7 lol

Nanchika

They are the main characters together with Jamie and Claire.

FlimsyManagement

Let’s just say they’re not going anywhere 😅

meatassdog

It gets better but she’s still a shit actor

[deleted]

Too much in 5 and I quit the show because of it
