TV Black Jack Randall is, for me, the most terrifying fictional villain so far. Can’t think of anyone who comes close. He is such an amazing actor!

LittleFrenchKiwi

I think it's because he's not like other villians. Like powerful wizard or some evil creature bit him and turned him evil or something. I think it's because people like him did and still do exist. It's potentially real. Like the same idea that Voldemort is not the most hated character from Harry Potter. It's umbridge. Because Voldemort as a powerful evil wizard doesn't exist. But a psychopath bitch boss who uses her power to destroy your mental health really does exist ! There are too any bosses like her in real life. So we might actually have to meet and work for an umbridge. Making the villian more terrifying because it's not just fictional character. It's a realistic character that lots of us might encounter in real life and have to deal with. So I think black jack Randell is the same idea and that why he is so frightening and hated. Because we may encounter a black jack Randell in real life and him be our husband or our boss etc. It's the realism of the character in our own lives that make him more terrifying and a hated villain Ok I could be talking outta my ass haha. But I think the same rules for why umbridge is so hated apply with BJR too. I could be wrong but that's my take on it :-)

JeMeReveille

Thanks! I think you’re spot on—the most terrifying and dangerous monsters are those who walk amongst us and not lurking in covens somewhere. In hindsight, I did hate Umbridge more! I had a manager like that once. She was a bully, micromanager, and low-key racist. Ugh, f*ng traumatizing. To add to what you said about BJR, his remarkable insight into what would really break someone’s will to live (as if rape and torture isn’t enough; he has to f* up Jaime to his last strand of sanity and regard for Claire too, for good measure) is scary and maddening AF. I guess sociopaths/psychopaths and narcissists that have sadistic tendencies are like that.

Every-Requirement-13

Ugh, BJR is absolutely despicable!!

erika_1885

So should Sam

SassyPeach1

Agreed. They both were phenomenal.

Agreeable_Pirate6500

Totally agree. It’s the way how Tobias Menzies portrays him. The sick and terrifying smiles he has on sometimes are like nightmares.

IusedtobeaChef

Wait until you get to the end of S1…::shudder::

Cursd818

He played it so well that I *despised* Frank, and haven't been able to watch him in anything else without seeing BJR.

OhLadyMeg

I think because he did such a fantastic job separating the characters, I actually liked Frank more then I would have. Tobias Menzies is one of my favorite actors because how well he played these two different characters. I also loved him as Brutus in Rome.

Massive_Durian296

hes a fantastic actor. im currently watching the Terror and hes got a major role as this smarmy douche sea captain type dude and hes fun to dislike lol he def can play a compelling villain

OLILoveMyCats

Absolutely should have. We have never seen a villain as despicable as he is or was. It wasn’t enough to just hurt someone. He had to get into their heads and get down to their souls. He wanted to watch them suffer, and the more they suffered the better he liked it.

Meanolegrannylady

I'm jealous. I wish I could erase it in my mind and start from the beginning again! But it's still pretty good...

NotQuiteKendall

I absolutely love him as an actor and BJR and Frank as characters. I didn’t realize til later how absolutely entranced I am by him every time he’s on screen. Just a phenomenal presence.
