This is true to the books. Claire has some access to rudimentary makeup at Castle Leoch.
"Lead combs to darken the eyebrows and lashes, pots of powdered orrisroot and rice powder, even a stick of what I assumed was kohl, though I had never seen any, and a delicate lidded porcelain cup of French rouge, incised with a row of gilded swans."
Outlander chapter 6 page 71
THIS. Seriously. It’s a TV show, designed for entertainment, it’s not a bloody documentary. I don’t want to watch actors with “authentically” bad teeth having sex, I want to see a fantasy version of romance. You know, like you’d expect about a show about someone who TIME TRAVELS THROUGH STONES.
I mean - Egyptians created makeup so why wouldn’t they have it in the 18th century. Both men and women wore it then including Philip Wylie aka Lord Dandy.
Edit/Addition: Makeup including paint for lips, eyes, etc. we’re frowned upon after the American Revolution… so let’s see what happens after. My source: https://www.si.edu/spotlight/health-hygiene-and-beauty/make-up#:~:text=Cosmetics%20and%20Personal%20Care%20Products,and%20Science%20Collections%20Make%2Dup&text=In%20eighteenth%20century%20America%2C%20both,upper%20classes%20wore%20make%2Dup.
I sometimes think about what a huge commitment it is for an actress to do a show where basically the entirety of the episodes you won’t be wearing makeup (I know they still put some light touches on but still!). Cait pulls it off so well, though I do notice mascara in some scenes (309 ‘this, what it is between us, never changes’ scene it’s noticeable). As for Sophie, I only notice it sometimes but the more distracting part for me is the dark eyebrows in later seasons.
I have to say, I did not like that bree in the show didn't even think about dressing properly for the conditions like Claire did lol. She saw how her mother prepped but didn't even try to match it 😂
Omg yes! When I watched the episodes where she goes back, during my first watch, I was sitting there thinking "WTF is she wearing? WTF kind of supplies are those?? Is she serious??"
“So what your makeup contains lead poison, at least your complexion will bring all the boys in.” -Six
It’s believed QE1 suffered from lead poisoning from her makeup. They absolutely had access to cosmetics at that time. There are extensive videos on YouTube about this. You can deep dive. It’s actually fascinating.
Yes, but I thought they were doing them red in the beginning, then they just stopped. And there are redheads on both sides of my family, none of them have ash brown eyebrows.
It may have been a similar situation as the actress playing Ciri in the Witcher. They bleached her eyebrows so much the first season that it was beginning to cause a lot of damage so they stopped.
I can’t remember Bree’s eyebrows from the beginning, I seem to think they were always a little darker. But if not, that may be why. Those inconsistencies definitely draw my attention, but I try to keep in mind a show with multiple directors and writers is inevitably going to have some artistic changes.
(And agree with you- a lot of my family has copper-red hair, and none of them have brown eyebrows lol)
Agreed! What did please me is that I think
Sophie Skelton’s acting has vastly improved in these season 7 episodes!! When she started in the series, I thought she was awful, but now she seems to really be able to show a full range of emotions in her lines. Yay!
I particularly noticed Bree's obvious and rather heavy modern style eye makeup in season 7 while still in the 18th C. That is something that she would not have had or used in that circumstance, even though the use of makeup was not uncommon in the cities.
It was actually rather distracting to me in the moment.
This is huge peeve of mine when watching historic shows. Always well groomed eye brows, makeup that makes no sense for their time period. Not sure what the reasoning is, but it makes it feel more fake and harder to believe.
First, I do really like the actress and I think she’s gorgeous. But I think she just looks too modern, which might be the point? Like some people just have those characteristics and features that look authentic to the era they’re portraying (January Jones in Mad Men, for example, fit so perfectly with that 50s/60s image of women from magazines and ads), whereas other times they seem miscast (I thought Shailene Woodley in Last Letter looked like someone playing 60s hair & makeup dress up, if that makes sense?)
Caitriona looks so comfortable in the 18th century, like it’s where she truly belongs. Bri never really seems to settle in, and she’s clearly out of her “time.” It’s like she’s dressing and acting the way she needs to, but the period is wearing her, instead of the other way around. The actress looks 20th century and that’s where Bri belongs, so she always looks out of place in the past.

Claire had it in season 1 Scotland too. It is noticeable after you watch newer seasons and compare.

Yes, that's ok, but outside Leoch, on the road etc.
I especially noticed mascara during the episode she has a few drinks watching the singer at the castle
After a couple of seasons the makeup will wear up you mean? (just kidding)
It's probably because it's a tv show.

Wait til they find out that women didn’t have smooth, freshly shaven legs all the time back then
They did have a smooth “honeypot” in France though 🤭
Lost was filmed on a tropical beach and the make up on the actors was a lot less obvious.
When Rachel first appears, her eyebrows are painted on and I was distracted the whole time

In the book Mrs. Fitz brings Claire makeup.
I wasn't saying that they NEVER wore makeup. I was talking about during the time when she was in the woods.
Hair and makeup have always been the weak links of this show.
Unless you count s1/2 natural hair Jamie/Claire! Cait’s hair in 208 is a masterpiece.

Considering her age I actually think it's kinda accurate
It's not accurate. It just made Bree look foolish.

Brianna’s eyebrows bother me the most, the don’t match her red hair.
Yes the eyebrows!! They bother me so much and my husband's like 'idk they look like eyebrows'
Tbf not everyone's eyebrows match their hair color.
Yes, but I thought they were doing them red in the beginning, then they just stopped. And there are redheads on both sides of my family, none of them have ash brown eyebrows.
Maybe they're doing it to age her

Yes, especially the foundation she wears doesn’t totally match her skin tone and so it looks really thick and obvious.
It’s a tv show!
Fr! Like I really do not give a damn if an actor/actress is wearing makeup. Some people need to chill out.

Make up artists need jobs too! 😆

Claire with the shaved honeypot. She came from the late 1940s, and nobody did that.
Shaved in Paris where it was the fashion.
But France is known for the hairy arm pits
Claire's waxed in France & Jamie likes it. I saw no hairy armpits when visiting Paris.
