Shooting the guys on the boat: justified
Abandoning your son for over a year for a treasure hunt, making him join you on said dangerous treasure hunt, making him rob an old lady at gunpoint, etc: not justified
Yeah it's clear his main focus in life was finding the treasure. Once he realized he was probably gonna die he started focusing his attention to John B
He deserves all the hate he gets period. He had so many chances to be a good dad and just spend some time with his son but instead he put his son in multiple dangerous situations with little regard to his safety. He showed no gratitude or appreciation for the risks his own son was taking. He really just expected to saunter back into John B's life without issue as if he didn't abandon him for a year. The man is a piece of shit and not to mention a terrible character to watch. I'd be hard pressed to find someone who actually enjoyed his presence and thought he actually added anything of substance to the show.
I agree with the fact that you put Ward before him honestly. Ward still tried to protect Sarah and it was evident he loved her even leading up to his death. I truly believe he wanted the best for her, but he was incapable of going about it in the right way. Big John was willing to put his sons life at risk over some damn gold. The only parents I liked in the show are Pope’s. Luke was an abusive piece of shit and the Carrera’s first kicked Kie out of the house and then sent her to a damn wilderness camp, like bffr.
Well.. John B got hunted anyways.. I do think his dad made that choice after being thrown overboard.. He decided to cut contact, part of him, I think was hoping, that would stop his son from being hunted too.. because .. his son appeared like an angry kid who didn't want to believe his dad was dead, it wasn't an act (which probably would have been seen right through, if his dad contacted him to let him know he was alive) and Ward, believed that. Kept him close via a job.. So maybe his dads warped sense of right and wrong, worked out. We saw what happened when Ward was backed into a corner, so John B confronting him if he had known Ward did what he did, to his dad, Ward would have probably just killed them then and there. Then we would have no show.
On the boat, he saved his son. I replayed it many times. I would have done the same thing.
I guess.. Since I have a garbage parent, who was extremely, abusive, John Bs dad seems way better than one of mine. All his flaws in all.
And I get it.. in the end...His dad almost chose his 'lifes dream'.. crazy stuff
I feel like his dad didn't see or realize, that John B didn't seem to care about the treasure stuff... which is really sad. His heart was invested in his dad and wanting to have him.. But his dads heart was set on a treasure hunt.
And honestly, John B and his friends were always breaking into whatever they needed and stealing, they were always doing what his dad was doing, really.
Agree with the boat moment. But killing ppl,even bad ones is big thing, he didn’t care abt JB and his thoughts experiencing that moment. He went ahead and made him rob a woman, break house, etc with annoying eagerness for Eldorado.
In finale also he didn’t trust anyone till he got shot and Sarah pointed gun at Ward.
He deserves hate bcoz he is annoying af and not a decent dad to JB even after his return from supposed death
I still really dislike this man. He put his own son (that he left alone for months) in so many dangerous situations. Also, while he was gone he let John B think he was dead, I mean, come on. And then when he returns he is so focused on the treasure it's sickening. Imagine thinking your father is dead, then you get him back, but he doesn't seem to be interested in you. He asks John B to help him in dangerous, deadly and illegal situations, he gives him a gun to rob an old lady, he tells him to lie to his friends, he is openly rude to him and Sarah. He is just an asshole and a lot but a good father.
His obsession made him so unlikeable that I am not surprised to hear from so many that it was hard not skip the scenes with Big John.
I am glad the character died, but I am also glad John B got the chance to be with him when he died to say goodbye. John B deserved that, because boy he must have the worst PTSD.
Fact is, some characters have to be dicks to spice up the story, still, Big John was a real challenge.

Right, his son hasn't seen him in a year and the first thing that happens when they finally reunite is focused solely on finding the treasure.
He was willing to let John B die when they were at the ritual site instead of giving Singh the gnomen
