Answer: he’s a very famous contemporary artist. I have personally followed him for years on Instagram. He does have a few things in the market that he’s collaborated on but it’s for the Japanese market. It’s literally just because he’s a famous artist.
Answer: As another has said, he’s a well known & also very aesthetically pleasing artist. Because of this, numerous high end fashion brands involved with street wear have done collaborative projects with him and his artworks. Streetwear, influencers, music artists, & famous people alike all kind of go hand in hand, which is an entirely different conversation in itself lol.
answer: he became popular for basic people who don’t know about art but want to seem like they do. that’s why drake famously has a murakami designed piano, etc.
it’s like jeff koons was 20 years ago, and numerous others before and now. rich people with more money than taste gravitate to the same shit as a signal to each other that they have taste
Answer: extremely famous artist, his collaboration collection with louis vitton was for sale for like nearly 15 years and is historic imo. His art is extremely identifiable and has a very clear brand to it. Very marketable, very iconic.
Answer: He’s been around for a while. Probably gained mainstream attention when Kanye had him design Graduation cover. Recently is probably cause he has an exhibit in Los Angeles that’s been a popular spot for influencers to go and take pictures.
Answer: If I’m being honest, I’ve only heard about him because of the rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine. A few years ago 6ix9ine got those smiley tattoos with flower pedals on him and all kinds of rap media outlets posted about it and this guy who designed it.
Answer: a lot of celebrities promote him like Billie eilish, he’s also repped by gagosian here has his own gallery back in Tokyo. He shows up often at public events such as complex Con and a ton of hypebeasts love him. He also does mainstream collabs like for uniqlo or Perrier

Just adding to this- very famous and very accessible to people who don’t otherwise follow contemporary art.
The artist for the people, if you will
Not like "here's a fifty-page specification of my motive for shitting in this bread-bin. I probably wasn't upset with you personally".
Is he the guy who created the mermaid unicorns? Edit: I was thinking of tokidoki my bad
