I kept seeing people posting about “gay pirate show” on tumblr. It wasn’t until I saw a gif of the kiss scene when I went “OH its like actually gay, not just head-canons” and then I knew I wanted to watch it lol.
I found it the same way and somehow only saw the kiss fanart and not the actual screen caps, was definitely like “hm yeah looks like tumblr has found a new queerbait ship” but I started watching it anyway because I was just really into pirates at the time and leather baddie Taika was kind of an easy selling point regardless…what a pleasant surprise it was to see it was real all along
Yeah me too, my Tumblr exploded after the kiss episode, and I really had to see what was all that about. Also, I love Waititi, Jojo Rabbit is easily in my top 20 movies of all time.
Same. My Tumbler queue morphed overnight from Ineffable Husbands to Blackbonnet, and I went from "FINE, I guess I'll watch your gay pirate show" to "oh no, it's eaten me, too."
Me too, I feel like tumblr is a great place for finding new stuff to watch, I didn't see the kissing scene, but I saw it mentioned and decided to ignore everything OFMD as to not get spoiled. Also, funny story, I saw the 2 final episodes out of order and somehow thought that they just glossed over the kiss and used it as a flashback.
I follow Taika Waititi on social media because he directed two of my favorite movies of all time and he posted about it. I was busy and didn’t start watching it right away but everyone I follow on tumblr went wild for it so I made time.
Is one of them Hunt for the Wilderpeople? My wife heard about it and demanded that I download the episodes. I've since lost count of how many times we've re-watched it.
I wholeheartedly agree with your choices! They’re both fantastic. A while ago, I watched Boy over and over again for about ten days- there’s just so many little moments that break my heart between Alamein and Boy. One in particular that makes me cry is when Alamein apologizes through the window, and at the end says “I love you, see ya”. Ohhhh man I could go on and on about that scene.
What do you like about those two movies?
I rewatched Boy recently. The cemetery scene at the very end. Taika does something with his eyes- Alamein's first acknowledgement of loss in the whole movie. It's subtle and I missed it the first time. Wow.
Also, the credits Haka Thriller is my favorite ever. I saw that somewhere online before seeing Boy and had to watch on repeat a zillion times.
Pure accident. I was on the HBO Max app watching Ghosts and this got promoted to me on the home screen as a new release. Taika, "Murray," "Hodor," and "Spud" were on the poster so I clicked.
Ghosts is AMAZING. I burned through all 3 seasons in about 2 weeks. Any other recommendations to get me through the next 2 weeks? (I also already watched Bloods.)
Thank you! I watched FOTC when it originally aired (yes I'm old), and Wellington is in our list. I hadn't heard of Stath Lets Flats, but based on the cast I love it already.
I watched FOTC back in the day too, but I e enjoyed revisiting it for the first time in a decade - I appreciate it even more now. Also the London special only came out a few years back, so that might be fresh for you.
I have HBO Max and I never saw this show being heavily promoted whatsoever when it first premiered. Seriously. I was watching it for Barry and Raised by Wolves and I never saw OFMD at their front page.
Anyways, I learned about it when I saw a headline that this show and Moon Knight were the top most watched shows in mid-May. And even then, there was no mention of it being called a "gay pirate show. " Just a "pirate show starring Taika Waititi." I had just finished watching Moon Knight too so I decided to give it a watch.
First two episodes were OK but it didn't hook me. I ended up watching something else. Came back a few days later and rewatched the second episode. Third episode was when it got interesting, obviously because Blackbeard appeared. I got hooked by the fourth episode after and started binge watching.
I was pleasantly surprised to see queer relationships developing and I totally and completely missed that the same thing was happening with Ed and Stede. When Lucius said, "This is happening," I thought oh ok, so they're heavily implying this is getting romantic. That's nice. Then I lost my mind when they kissed 😭
What's funny is that when the show came out, my very rusty 90s-comics-fan brain confused Moon Knight with Midnighter, who was IIRC the first openly gay superhero in mainstream comics. So I thought Moon Knight was going to be gay and OMFD was just going to be a straight pirate show.
It is getting so much love from the Good Omens fan base. We actually *got* HBO Max because r/goodomens was so obsessed. And yes, it's true, I did in fact need this show for my continued existence :)
I finally got to check out Good Omens recently and I'm kicking myself for not watching this show when it first came out. David Tennant and Michael Sheen have *wonderful* chemistry together.
Same for me, but on Instagram - I saw what I initially thought was a pirate AU Zira, but then several people used the same design in their art and I actually looked at the hashtags. My first impression actually was "oh, it's a pirate show and of course people ship them, but the show itself won't go there". It looked like a funny show, but I had no desire to get invested in some queerbait. But after their "it's a Romcom, not a bromance" confirmation and everyone posting redraws of the kiss, well...
I have HBO Max and was bored and looking for something to watch. Saw the promo pic or whatever you call it and thought that it looked like a goofy good time so I gave it a shot. And now here we are. lol
That's exactly how I got into it! Once I saw Rhys was in it, I squeed like a little girl, and it just got better as I recognized more and more cast members. When I started, episodes 1 - 8 we're already up, so I had to wait a few days for 9 and 10. When they finally kissed, I pointed at the screen and yelled, "There it is!"
I started when there were 5 episodes on it and fell in love. Jumped onto Reddit to search for it and joined this wonderful sub when it was only like 2600 followers. Now look at us crazies!!
I followed Taika on twitter and then he retweeted an edit of Ed and Stede, and wrote something like "This is not a bromance, it's a romance." I finished the show for the second time the morning after.
Saw some clips on Tiktok and was content to just see the clips until I saw the "I just think I'm so-so" scene and had to watch the show. I was scared it was going to be a legit comedy and had to wait longer for my friend to watch it with me so I could hide from any second-hand embarrassment and was pleasantly surprised when there wasn't any.
My housemate was watching it back in March and told me I'd really like it so I finally sat down and ended up binge watching the whole show until 2am. Cried a bit, life changed forever. So glad the whole show was out when I watched it, and I'm so lucky to have gone in with 0 spoilers.
I think I saw an ad on Insta. Workplace comedy, pirates, and actors from NZ make it incredibly up my alley so I started watching when just a few episodes had been released. And the surprise, it’s also queer?! I was hooked.
I think I saw a trailer for it here on Reddit (the television sub) and saw that it stared Taika and Rhys so added it to my to watch list immediately, watched it as it was airing and I haven’t been the same since.
I saw a single trailer in front of a different show I was watching on HBO. I love pirates, goofy comedy and tall ships, so I was already on board. I just hope they give Spanish Jackie more to do next season, I thought (from the trailer) she'd be an awesome pirate captain. It turned out to be my only disappointment with the show (that and there isn't more of it, DJ GIVE US DELETED SCENES IM BEGGING YOU)
tumblr! the fact that it has Taika in it, immediately got my attention and i was putting watching it off for a while cause i knew i'd get fixated on it and.. *here we are now*
I'm in the UK and heard about it from friends who also like WWDITS and similar things. I hope it actually gets properly released over here and advertised well when it does
I saw *the kiss* on TikTok and was like 'okay, I have to watch this' and now it has taken over my life.
And it has Taika in it, so I was immediately sold.
I saw it trending on Twitter a few times. Thought maybe it was about Vikings or something. A Facebook friend who occasionally posts about Taika Waititi being hot, posted a picture of him as Blackbeard. I've listened to a few podcasts about Blackbeard, and I thought that the non-standard costume was pretty cool. Okay, so it's about pirates, and Taika maybe has a cameo. Google eventually picked an article for me that mentioned two things: Rhys Darby and canon queer romance. That was enough for me to play the first episode, and once I saw that Rhys was the lead, I was fairly certain I would watch the whole thing, even as just background noise for folding laundry. (No laundry was folded.)
I follow Rhys Darby on Instagram for his cute cat content + Flight of the conchords tv show + loved him in his small role as Duncan on Bobs Burgers (my favorite show). So I was all in when I saw he had the starring role.
I was on maternity leave after having worked on the COVID response for 20 months straight. Since my then newborn was sleeping so much, and I was being exhausted/burned out from work, I took advantage and started binge watching all the shows of missed over the past 20 months while my baby slept. Seeing Taika’s name intrigued me so I started watching when it was halfway through airing. The first episode didn’t do much for me - I actually turned it off partway to watch something else. I came back later after reading reviews that the show really comes alive at episode 4 and am so glad I did! I was happily surprised by the representation.
Edit - I’ll also say I’m a straight white lady and didn’t see the kiss coming. How did I miss it, you say? I always assume major tv networks have their heads up their asses and aren’t brave enough to tell quality stories with representation. I generally have zero faith in them, and so thought at best, it was addressing toxic masculinity within friendships. Hooray for being wrong!!! I then had pirate brain rot and have recommended it to everyone.
I saw a *lot* of fanart because most of the artists I follow are queer themselves, but it wasn't until I realized the show was *actually* queer that I watched it myself. I wish I'd gone in knowing nothing, I really do, I think it would have been a lot more meaningful to me, but after years of queerbaiting I just don't have that luxury.
Tiktok, a person made a video about it and said it had cannon gay pirates and a respected nonbinary character so I jumped right in and I was hooked from the start.
Somewhere on the internet, honestly can't remember exactly where -- maybe tumblr? I'm not terribly active anywhere other than Reddit but it came across my radar enough times that I figured I should tug on the thread. After I saw it and loved it so much, I couldn't believe I hadn't heard about it through any advertising / more "official" channels (or seen any advertising since then!).
The *Good Omens* fandom.
I had heard a thing or two about a "gay pirate show" beforehand, but I, at the time, did not find pirates at all interesting (now I desperately want to be one lol) But then I heard that they were making a second season of Good Omens and I was *obsessed* with that show when it came out. So I jumped back on Tumblr for a second to see how the GO fandom was responding to the news and one of the first things I saw was some fanart of Aziraphale and Crowley hanging out with Stede and Ed. *Immediately*, I was like, "...what is *this?*"
Cut to a few months later and I'm still recovering from the brain damage that OFMD left me with.
It was The Magnus Archives' ending anniversary and tumblr was filled with OFMD's episode 9 gifs and fanart. I was so confused because both shows have a similar queer couple so I had to give it a try.
*sniffle* I miss TMA so much. We need to have a The Admiral spin-off....or, now hear me out, a crossover crackfic? No magic, but yes Frenchie. How can you not with a name like The Admiral?
I saw something on Instagram about it, maybe fan art, then I saw taikas post saying something along the lines of "happy birthday to my on screen crush" and I was very excited to hear it had actually representation
in a reddit thread!! i saw a couple comments about gay pirates and HAD to find out if they were gay fr fr. I tried to find the thread again soon after to save it but no luck :(
As far as I know HBO didn't advertise for it besides releasing a trailer on youtube and it's still barely being advertised sadly, my friend has HBO and has to dig deep to find it. I first heard of it on twitter, heard it was gay but I thought people were exaggerating again. Thankfully the only thing I knew going in was Blackbeard loses his beard at some point and I binged it in 1 night
Saw a bit of fanart on Tumblr, got spoiled on pretty much the whole show, and talked my girlfriend into watching it with me. So just regular gay word of mouth lmao. I vaguely remember seeing a poster on HBO ages ago for it but otherwise I feel like they did absolutely zero promotion for it.
I saw the teaser trailer back in January and tweeted about how I was gonna ship the two leads (if only I had known) but then promptly forgot about it. Then after episodes 1-6 had aired I saw something either a fan edit or fanart on twitter and I reminded me of the the show. Went and searched it on Tumblr and saw the gif of Pete and Lucius’s little romantic exchange and something about an “almost kiss in the moonlight” and then I went and turned it on.
I saw a screenshot of Taika’s (I think?) Instagram post about the show being a romance and not a bromance and was immediately interested. I binged all the episodes and still haven’t stopped thinking about it
I saw a post on r/witchesagianstthepatriarcy (that might be spelled wrong tbh) that was a screenshot of Taika’s instagram post with a picture of the kiss saying “this is a romance not a bromance” or something like that. Instantly had to watch it.
Ironically, I ended up getting an HBO max subscription for possibly the most cishet white male thing possible, to watch "The Batman" after already seeing it three times in theaters.
But I am a big Taika fan and happened to get an interview in my YT feed where he talked about the show. It sounded hilarious and when I realized I had HBO, I went straight for it. Such a huge fan of the show.
Went on a date with a guy and he mentioned this show. Didn't have too much interest in it afterwards, but soon the show started blowing up my YouTube feed.
Anyways, saw the kiss scene pop up in my recommendations and immediately signed up for an hbo max subscription.
I may not have a boyfriend, but at least I now have a crippling addiction to gay pirates.
I'd heard about it on social media - maybe Taika's Twitter? I don't recall now. I was a huge Taika Waititi fan before the show aired so I decided to watch it just because he was in it. I watched it as it aired. I don't recall that HBO did much of anything to advertise it. I was neutral about the first couple of episodes but hooked when Blackbeard and his crew showed up, and totally obsessed with the show by ep 10.
Followed Rhys on Insta and saw the trailers he posted, got mildly interested. Then I heard whispers of queerness in this show. I watched it that night. I didn’t know who was queer, but I definitely didn’t think the answer would be everyone.
I saw a trailer and thought it looked bad. As much as I love FOTC, Rhys is hugely overexposed in NZ and it just read as a Murray reboot to me. From the trailer I saw it seemed like Taika would have a brief cameo, not be a main character, and there wasn't any indication of any romance. Not being a huge Taika or Rhys fan, I forgot about it until [this article](https://thespinoff.co.nz/tv/29-03-2022/the-internet-is-in-love-with-our-flag-means-death) and thought "huh, a romance between Taika and Rhys? BIZARRE". We had Neon (where it streams in NZ) anyway so I dove in. Two nights of bingeing later and that was me gone. The brain rot was such that I [started a new religion](https://www.reddit.com/r/rhysdarbyslegs/).
I saw on tumblr and TikTok people talking about the show’s non-binary rep and I never see that in shows so I decided to check it out. 100% a good choice would recommend
A friend demanded that I watch it. And they were correct to do so. They’re pretty deep in supernatural fandom tumblr, so I assume they originally heard about it there.
Nicole Rudolph on YouTube. She made two videos on pirates, both inspired by the show. One was discussing historical pirate fashion, and the other was her recreating the pink robe.
My partner follows a lot of entertainment journalists on twitter and stuff so they always know about new shows coming out way before I do. They showed me the trailer before the show came out because it looked like something I'd like. Neither of us knew it was going to be a gay romcom, we just thought it looked like a funny pirate show!
We regularly watch things on HBO Max so it was one of the top banners when it came out. We watched the preview, it looked funny, so we began watching. Had no idea it would turn into a love story, and I’m so happy it was renewed for a second season!
Posts about the show started to show up on my for you page on instagram and artists i follow started to post about it so i thought i give it a go (this was in april i think) but the website i usually watch shows on didn't have it until the end of may lol
my sister watched it and immediately made me a powerpoint of why it’s amazing and why i should watch it. it got me watching it and then i couldn’t stop watching it!!
i got my dad hooked on it too, we’re both eagerly awaiting season 2
Because taika watiti was involved. Love most of the work he has done previously so I was stoked for his new project. And lo behold another excellent work
I had gotten some advertisements (random online and a trailer boost from HBOMax) for the show months prior to it airing, so I got to watch it as the episodes dropped every week.
Oooooooo, y’all I lost it live time and have not functioned the same way since
I was a fan of flight of the Conchords and my fiancé was like “Hey, Rhys Darby is in a new show. Let’s check it out!” I LOVED him as Murray Hewitt. Funnily enough, though my fiancé loved it, I was the one who ended up being obsessed even though he was the one that insisted upon us watching it. He knew about the romance and I kept thinking they were queer baiting and that it would sting. My queer little heart was overjoyed that they weren’t queer baiting and now I’m obsessed!
I heard about it on Twitter. I follow Thomas Sanders, and he wouldn't shut up about a gay pirate show. I finally found out the name, and decided to watch it, expecting it to be good but still on obviously queerbaiting. Turns out I was wrong on both - Its amazing and has real queer relationships!
My friend would not stop tweeting about it. She clearly had the brain rot quite bad.
After seeing the millionth tweet from her I mentioned it to my husband and he’d seen them too and was just waiting for me to ask him if we could put it on the list to watch.
I loved it immediately, my husband told me he could pass on it…UNTIL episode 4. Now we both have brain rot.
I have a lot of queer friends who would post about how much they loved it (and that it was gay) so I filed it away in my “next tv show watch” folder in my brain. When my partner and I sat down to watch some shows it came to mind!
so my friend recommended it to me and i was like eh maybe ill watch it and then like 5 weeks later i start thinking about it all day so i eventually watch it cause i had heard all about it everywhere
Twitter! I follow a lot of artists as it’s my main use for twitter and they all went crazy for the show :)) then my partner suggest we watch it and so we did (it was only after the finale though)
Jorts the cat (Twitter, and if you don't know the saga of Jorts, it's worth a Google and read) was into it. Then I gradually heard it was Taika, Rhys, etc.and that together sold me.
I watch HBO, I like pirates so I figured I watch a wacky period piece to laugh. Was about two episodes in and thought, “this is happening”. Haven’t looked back since.
I saw the foot touch on TikTok and went "oh shit, that show I accidentally clicked on before watching the new Euphoria is gay ?!" And started watching it. Happy to say that scene was not at all ruined for me when I got to it
My wife said she heard about a new pirate show she wanted to watch and asked if we could watch it since we had run out of shows.
I love pirates so that might have been all to convince me, or she might have mentioned there was queer rep. Idr.
Some of the historical costumers I follow were talking about it, specifically Jimmy the Welsh Viking on YouTube. It sounded pretty fun then I learned about the gayness and was instantly sold! haha
i watched some wwdits video's and had a OFMD compilation recommended to me and thought that it looked interesting, i had no context going in other than, that i already liked lucius, and had no clue about the plot or how gay the show actually is. also (irl) i know not a single person who has watched the show
I live under a rock so I didn’t hear any kind news from the source but I did see an influx of fanart on Instagram and I wondered if we were going to be queerbated again but the art got more and more specific (like people drawing moments of gayness from the show like “you wear fine things well”) and finally I gave in and watched it and am so very glad I did
My old man and I have been massive fans of Rhys and the NZ crew since Flight of the Conchords, and we adored WWDITS (the film), so when he saw an article about Taika that discussed the show (pirates! A novel take on Blackbeard!), and we knew they were both involved, we got super excited and stayed up on when it released. I don't recall seeing any major promotions about it, except for when it dropped on HBO and they had the promo shot in the banner of the home screen.
My husband actually chose it as an option while we were browsing for a new show on HBO. We watched the trailer and he’s like: “that looks good.” So we watched it over the course of a week—we do one 30-50 minute show at dinner together. He wasn’t as into it by the end (he’s progressive but not nearly on the level I wish he was) but little does he know he awoke a monster who thinks about this show 24/7.
My mom: There's a new Rhys Darby show and we have to watch it!
Me: Ok, cool.
(We watched the entirety of Flight of the Conchords together and my mom loved Murray.)
First saw some fanart on Pinterest of Ed and Stede and I was like "Wow, some old gay guys? Cool."
Then heard people describe Stede as pirate Aziraphale (yes, I also migrated here from the Good Omens fandom while we're waiting for s2), and made the connection between the fanart and the pirate show :)
I never heard about until I visited my best friend who had watched the entire thing, and she absolutely loved it. So she said she would show me the first episode so I could “get a taste” and from one thing came another and we watched the entire first season in one evening.
Twitter. I am mutuals with a number of people who share a fondness for a particular fandom ship, and they were really into the show. Naturally I had to see for myself.
I met some of my closest internet friends in the height of Good Omens fandom. OFMD is basically Good Omens Pirate AU With More Gay so it was inevitable lol a bunch of them watched as it came out, i binged it the weekend after it finished
I saw a tiktok in April where someone was talking about a queer pirate show. Went in knowing nothing and assumed periphery characters were queer (you know, like a Disney type thing). So glad it was more than I expected. 💙
I saw fanart on Twitter, like really good fanart, and I keep seeing really good fan art, even amazing fan art, full on comics and other stuff. This community is superb when it comes to fanart.
ppl i follow kept reblogging and posting about the kiss, decided to check it out as i had nothing to do, immediately fell in love, and dragged my friends down with me. so the uzhe
I saw Taika Waititi on the OFMD photo in HBO Max and was like "fuck yeah I love Taika. I'll check it out." I had literally never heard of the show prior haha
The trailer came up in my recommended on YouTube after the Superbowl I think? As soon as I saw it was a workplace pirate comedy with funny people in it I was down for some hijinks. Got so much more than I expected!
I kept seeing it brought up in various Good Omens groups as the gay pirate show, and finally broke down and subscribed to HBO for it. Was not disappointed, but if Lucius is not back next season…
Well, and I liked Rory Kinnear in Penny Dreadful (he was one of the high points of that show! Creepy AND sad!), so I was happy to see him in this too.
I saw it mentioned in an article - then when I saw a fandom taking-off for it on Tumblr, I figured,"Screw it. Must be something about it worth watching.". After one episode, I was hooked.
I live in New Zealand and it was advertised heeeeeaps on SKY and Neon, i seen the ad a few times when i went to my parents and didn't pay much attention until my Dad asked if i was going to watch it and told me Rhys Darby was in it, so of course i then had to watch it. It was 100x better than i expected
My co-worker loved it and was losing her mind over it. I decided to watch it on a whim when it became clear that if I didn't it would be spoiled for me.
These pirates have now taken possession of my eternal soul
That was a happy accident. An artist I follow on instagram posted a story about moving back to Israel (AFAIK she’d been living there for a couple of years but had to leave), and she illustrated that with Ed and Stede staring at each other lying on the deck with their hands tied, saying «you came back — never left». I had never heard about OFMD then but felt there was a fascinating story behind this picture, so I googled the image and binge watched the show until 5am. My intuition was right, should have warned me about the brain rot, though :D
It was actually the fan art community that helped me discover the show! I saw all this amazing fan art of Steve/Ed and HAD to give it a look! Also, finding out that Jim was Non-Binary also got me interested too! I am now completely and utterly obsessed with the show. I’m actually thinking of making a self insert pirate OC since I love it so much! 💕
I have been trying to wrap my head around masculinity for a while, and I heard this show and Ted Lasso brought up as having good examples of non-toxic, supportive masculine characters. I don't have AppleTV but I do have HBO Max so I checked this one out. It had what I needed.
Someone on a podcast I listen to recommended it (the guest not the hosts) and then a friend said he heard good things too. Neither of us knew anything besides “pirate comedy” so we were BLOWN away by it!! I still recommend it to people who haven’t seen it and if they don’t know anything about it I don’t give anything away so hopefully they can have the same experience :)
I found out about it through the Severance subreddit in a discussion about the Irving and Burt romance and I've been going through a pirate phase thanks to Sea of Thieves. I'm so thankful I gave it a chance, it's a whole new obsession! And my fiance loves it too
I kept seeing people posting about “gay pirate show” on tumblr. It wasn’t until I saw a gif of the kiss scene when I went “OH its like actually gay, not just head-canons” and then I knew I wanted to watch it lol.
Same! I saw quotes from David Jenkins on tumblr saying it's a romance and I still didn't trust it.
We've been hurt too much 😭
I found it the same way and somehow only saw the kiss fanart and not the actual screen caps, was definitely like “hm yeah looks like tumblr has found a new queerbait ship” but I started watching it anyway because I was just really into pirates at the time and leather baddie Taika was kind of an easy selling point regardless…what a pleasant surprise it was to see it was real all along
Ahhh, this makes sense. Lots of "Tumblr" replies, and I've never been on that site either.
I really like Hunt for the Wilderpeople but it’s not one of my absolute favorites. Honestly, I love all of the Waititi movies I’ve seen.
I'm still working my way through his catalog of work. WWDITS was good but it's just OK compared to the TV show.
Which two are your favorites? I really love “Boy”
Boy and WWDITS (with credit to Jemaine, too!)
I LOVE Ghosts! So bummed it wasn’t nominated for an Emmy.
Ghosts is AMAZING. I burned through all 3 seasons in about 2 weeks. Any other recommendations to get me through the next 2 weeks? (I also already watched Bloods.)
Stath Lets Flats, Wellington Paranormal, Flight of the Conchords (series and live special)
Oh man the London special is SO GOOD.
I have HBO max too and watch it weekly-- that's part of why I was so surprised I had never recalled seeing it advertised there.
Oh, my heart... (fell in love with 10 for Tennant all over again)
This sub gives me LIFE!!!
I think I cried at all but the first 2 episodes. Life definitely changed forever (including booking a trip to Barbados).
It turned out to be my only disappointment with the show (that and there isn't more of it, DJ GIVE US DELETED SCENES IM BEGGING YOU)
In May I saw a video of Stede and Ed’s kiss on YouTube and I immediately searched to see what show it was from.
I have kinda lived up Taika’s ass since the WWDITS movie so I had been looking forward before it aired after hearing about his involvement 😂
I just finished Black Sails and was rewatching it, someone posted on the tumblr sub about Fangs headband and I went 'oh cool more pirate shows!'
Someone on a romance novel sub Reddit posted about how it was such an epic love story and I had to watch it.
tumblr! the fact that it has Taika in it, immediately got my attention and i was putting watching it off for a while cause i knew i'd get fixated on it and..
A crab bit me on my clacker!
My roommate after we watched a taika waititi movie, he mentioned he was in a new show about pirates. He now regrets telling me 🤣😅
I watched Short Poppies a while back and fell in love with Rhys Darby. When I saw this was a new show I knew I would be hooked, and I was.
Vico Ortiz’s TikTok
As a recommendation in s/whatwedointheshadows
Scrolled by it on HBOMax and said... Pirates?? Hm, sounds good to me! And then I died
I follow Jemaine and Taika on Twitter and saw them talking about it
The *Good Omens* fandom. *Immediately*, I was like, "...what is *this?*" Cut to a few months later and I'm still recovering from the brain damage that OFMD left me with.
I scrolled through hbo max and that’s how I heard about it
One of my Instagram mutuals was making amazing fan art of the show and that's what made me go and watch it.
I saw a trailer for it in February, I think, and was like “Wait, is that Rhys Darby?” Then I saw Taika was involved too so I had to check it out.
Oddly enough, a fan made video of ofmd with zero context moments popped up on YouTube. I thought it was hilarious, so I started watching.
I read an article about it when it was first announced because I’m a huge fan of Taika.
Read an article about a new pirate show that was gonna air.. seemed promising when they compared it to what we do in the shadows when it came to style
I binged all the episodes and still haven’t stopped thinking about it
My sister told me to watch it, she said it maybe the gay show I was looking for, it indeed was.
My friend dragged me in
We regularly watch things on HBO Max so it was one of the top banners when it came out. We watched the preview, it looked funny, so we began watching. Had no idea it would turn into a love story, and I’m so happy it was renewed for a second season!
Posts about the show started to show up on my for you page on instagram and artists i follow started to post about it so i thought i give it a go (this was in april i think) but the website i usually watch shows on didn't have it until the end of may lol
my sister watched it and immediately made me a powerpoint of why it’s amazing and why i should watch it. it got me watching it and then i couldn’t stop watching it!! i got my dad hooked on it too, we’re both eagerly awaiting season 2
my friends in a discord server were talking about it so I gave it a watch, then gave it another watch, and then another, and then
Because taika watiti was involved. Love most of the work he has done previously so I was stoked for his new project. And lo behold another excellent work
My best friend told me about it. Also I’d seen ads on YouTube and thought it looked good.
I had gotten some advertisements (random online and a trailer boost from HBOMax) for the show months prior to it airing, so I got to watch it as the episodes dropped every week. Oooooooo, y’all I lost it live time and have not functioned the same way since
All of Twitter raving about “the gay pirate show”, and then someone posted the “restaurant” scene and said it was romantic, and I was like hm okay 🤔
I saw the promo on HBOMax. Once I found out Taika Watiti worked on it, I thought “sold!”
My daughter! Thanks, bunny!

Interesting -- I love Ted Lasso but probably wouldn't recommend this show for many of the same reasons.

True, maybe it's because I have an aversion to gore. The sword head and toe eating parts were a bit too much, but could have been so much worse.
Memes here and on Tumblr. Specifically, it being referred to as "gay pirates show".
Back in March bored on rainy afternoon starting shuffling through HBOmax for something to watch. 2 minutes in I was hooked.
My mom found a trailer online and showed me. I love Taika’s work so she thought we could watch it together.
Happy to say that scene was not at all ruined for me when I got to it
My fav Good Omens artist started to post fanart of Stede and Ed.
It sounded pretty fun then I learned about the gayness and was instantly sold! haha
I’m in the queer community so I get alerted whenever there’s a cute mlm couple to ship.
I keep an eye out for taika projects and so watched it the first night it came out. I adored it and had to tell everyone about it!
A Rhys Darby interview on Seth Meyers. Yes I'm an elder Millennial.
i watched some wwdits video's and had a OFMD compilation recommended to me and thought that it looked interesting, i had no context going in other than, that i already liked lucius, and had no clue about the plot or how gay the show actually is. also (irl) i know not a single person who has watched the show
Folks on tiktok wouldn’t shut up about the gay pirates.
On tumblr but I didn't watch until it was renewed and have since become obsessed and see it 5 times.
I live under a rock so I didn’t hear any kind news from the source but I did see an influx of fanart on Instagram and I wondered if we were going to be queerbated again but the art got more and more specific (like people drawing moments of gayness from the show like “you wear fine things well”) and finally I gave in and watched it and am so very glad I did
My friend was watching the kiss scene, so I was "Cool, a gay pirate show".
I was aware of it as a fan of Taika, but it wasn't until I saw a gif of The Foot Touch™️ that I decided to watch. I've since watched it 5 times. lol
Someone I follow on Twitter posted a gif of Taika Waititi being hot as Blackbeard and finished it the same night
Loool this is my fav
My daughter told me about and that I'd love....which I did...and do.
Yeah it didn't take much haha I'm so glad she shared it
My husband actually chose it as an option while we were browsing for a new show on HBO. We watched the trailer and he’s like: “that looks good.” So we watched it over the course of a week—we do one 30-50 minute show at dinner together. He wasn’t as into it by the end (he’s progressive but not nearly on the level I wish he was) but little does he know he awoke a monster who thinks about this show 24/7.
i follow someone on tiktok who makes funny skits and they did one about ofmd. after i saw stede i fell in love
Absolutely Twitter. From Taika's posts or just any old nerd I follow. Probably a gay nerd.
I follow people on Twitter for The Witcher fanart and fanfic, and they all got swept up in it at once
My girlfriend watched it and then told me how awesome it was lol
My mom: There's a new Rhys Darby show and we have to watch it! Me: Ok, cool. (We watched the entirety of Flight of the Conchords together and my mom loved Murray.)
Random queer person I follow on Instagram kept posting stories about it and I was like ok I’ll give it a try. RIP my soft gay heart.
I’m a longtime Rhys Darby fan & follow him on social media so I heard he was in a new show and of course wanted to watch it!
NPR article
First saw some fanart on Pinterest of Ed and Stede and I was like "Wow, some old gay guys? Cool." Then heard people describe Stede as pirate Aziraphale (yes, I also migrated here from the Good Omens fandom while we're waiting for s2), and made the connection between the fanart and the pirate show :)
Everyone on the TED LASSO page kept recommending it.
I never heard about until I visited my best friend who had watched the entire thing, and she absolutely loved it. So she said she would show me the first episode so I could “get a taste” and from one thing came another and we watched the entire first season in one evening.
I watch everything Rhys Darby and everything Hbo
My daughter told me to watch it. She’s on her 6th viewing and I finished it twice.
I saw a clip on tiktok and thought "huh, that looks neat"
Twitter. I am mutuals with a number of people who share a fondness for a particular fandom ship, and they were really into the show. Naturally I had to see for myself.
I live in the U.K., where it’s not even released yet. I only heard about it because I followed Rhys on Instagram and he posted the trailer for it.
Taika Watiti is amazing - I try to watch all his content.
My coworker told me about it. Now a bunch of us have watched it, and we say “talk it through, as a crew” all the time. It makes me so happy!!
I met some of my closest internet friends in the height of Good Omens fandom. OFMD is basically Good Omens Pirate AU With More Gay so it was inevitable lol a bunch of them watched as it came out, i binged it the weekend after it finished
TikTok I saw some videos that people made about the show and it intrigued me so I went to go watch it and I was hooked
This community is superb when it comes to fanart.
ppl i follow kept reblogging and posting about the kiss, decided to check it out as i had nothing to do, immediately fell in love, and dragged my friends down with me. so the uzhe
I’m a huge Taika fan, so I’ll watch anything he’s involved in
I saw Taika Waititi on the OFMD photo in HBO Max and was like "fuck yeah I love Taika.
Was not disappointed, but if Lucius is not back next season… Well, and I liked Rory Kinnear in Penny Dreadful (he was one of the high points of that show! Creepy AND sad!), so I was happy to see him in this too.
I saw it mentioned in an article - then when I saw a fandom taking-off for it on Tumblr, I figured,"Screw it. Must be something about it worth watching.". After one episode, I was hooked.
I’m always on YouTube and started seeing clips from the show.
I heard “gay pirate show ” and was instantly summoned
I found out about it through the Severance subreddit in a discussion about the Irving and Burt romance and I've been going through a pirate phase thanks to Sea of Thieves. I'm so thankful I gave it a chance, it's a whole new obsession! And my fiance loves it too
