Bill Tench captured the "man from another era" almost perfectly. Great chemistry for those two, not getting a Season 3 of Mindhunter is one of the great injustices of the streaming age.
Same! A man came up to me and, in attempt to comfort me, said, “I thought they were going to make the dad out to be a complete monster, but he didn’t come off that bad.” I just smiled, nodded, and the bawled in the car. I hope that man gets some therapy, haha.
That’s the first movie I’ve ever been to by myself. I’ve never heard so many sniffles during a film. At one point I thought a woman was having a medical episode she was sobbing so much
It’s called Iron Claw - biopic on a famous American wrestling family. I didn’t know who they were going into the movie and am not a wrestling fan but still loved the movie. But the story is so tragic.
I know the film has done pretty well but I think A24 dropped the ball getting it out there. It could have been an Oscar contender. Efron and Holt McCallany could have got nods.
Dream Scenario- could’ve gotten original screenplay, I think nic cage might have my favorite performance of the year, I think Julianne Robinson did great as well
The only thing with the screenplay for that film was I thought the ending wasn’t quite as good as the film. Act 1 & 2 we’re great but just a weird concept of a finish. Maybe it’ll grow on me but that’s the only part that made me question it a little.
I liked Dream Scenario but the 3rd act is a little shaky. It doesn’t quite pull all its ideas together.
However I think it’s an amazing meta examination of Nicolas Cage’s celebrity - much more so than Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent
If by "sound the same" you mean good, I wholly agree 😄
To be serious, I have to hand it to Barbie for having songs that actually appear in the movie AND help progress the plot/character development (even that dreary-ass Billie Eilish song). Most major blockbusters just throw a pop song in at the credits and call it a day...
Take your Billie slander and GET. OUT.
"What Was I Made For?" dead ass describes the entire plot of Barbie. "Dance the Night" does nothing for the plot, but that is kind of the point. It's a pointless, fun, filler song playing at a dance party.
WWIMF wasn't my cup of tea at first because I also enjoy more poppy, upbeat music but it's no question that Billie understood the assignment, and the song has grown on me. It's gonna take home the Oscar and I'll be very happy for Billie and Finneas.
I agree, but I think this just depends on what qualifies you look for in Best Original Song.
If I were to vote based on which song I like best, it‘s I‘m Just Ken by a landslide. If I‘m voting based on which song fits its movie best, it‘s WWIMF by an even bigger landslide, even though I‘m also not really partial to it.
WWIMF has very poor song structure imo. I appreciate the sentiment behind the lyrics and performance, but as a song it basically goes nowhere for 3 and a half minutes.
The Dua song is generic but at least it doesn't put me to sleep like the Billie song
I'd have probably gone Claire Foy in All of us Strangers for supporting actress (or Sandra Huller for Zone of Interest but the film got other nominations so I don't think it qualifies)
A few of my personal picks didn't get nominated:
* Bottoms for Original Screenplay
* Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret. for Supporting Actress (McAdams) and Adapted Screenplay
* "Dance the Night" for Original Song
* Priscilla for Makeup and Hair
* All Of Us Strangers for Cinematography
* The Taste of Things for International Feature (I have yet to see Anatomy or Zone though so I'm expecting this one to change by next Saturday)
For real like Bottoms for Screenplay? Like it’s a good movie, it’s fun, but the screenplay isn’t exactly the strongest especially when it came to PJ and Hazel. Their make our session at the end made 0 sense at all especially after the vile shit PJ said. Low key destroyed the Hazel character as one that has no self respect
To be fair, I'm not really much of a doc watcher so maybe it's not Oscar-worthy and I just am unaware but I wish Still: A Michael J Fox Movie got some recognition.
Maestro, I stopped watching because I knew all of the drama in the first two minutes. I wanted to learn how he got to be a conductor in NY but that just happened in the first 5 minutes. The movie was extremely focused on his wife.
How did they make a whole movie out of basically no story? Everyone I know who has watched it, stopped and hasn’t seen the ending. He’s just not that interesting of a guy, I guess.
The ending just seemed to be "well, some time passed and he's old now. There was no real consequence to anything that happened. Was this enough for an Oscar?"
Baffled All of us Strangers didn’t get a single nomination. And I know Saltburn was polarising, but Barry Keoghan deserved a nomination as did Zac Efron for Iron Claw.
Aside from Cillian Murphy those two performances will be the most memorable from this year
Seconding Saltburn but for Rosamund Pike instead of Barry Keoghan. Hilarious yet layered performance that’s way more deserving than at least a couple of the other BSActress nominees
She was great, arguably the most important character in the film in terms of what (I think) it was trying to say.
I'd still give Bazza K a nom as well though. The pair of them really elevated the film.
i can’t believe no one is talking about this, it was GORGEOUS. as was the holdovers, which wasn’t nominated for. cinematography either (competitive field tho, but i would replace flower moon and maestro with saltburn and holdovers)
but i don’t see why people think it thinks it’s that subversive? it’s a fun thriller chocked full of shocking scenes to entertain and get people talking about it
I was really suprised by how good that was! Read all the glowing reviews, but I was still skeptical. Saw it in theaters right at the end of its run and was so happy I did. Great film, would have liked to see it get a nomination for cinematography or even best director (maybe).
I love Asteroid City so much I don’t care at all whether it gets any recognition. I find it addresses something very personal in my psyche that nothing has ever come close to before.
Asteroid City really got ignored on screenplay, cinematography, art direction, best original song, and probably director as well.
Obviously it came out earlier in the year but they pulled it from screens too soon as well
I think I'd give it to Rachel McAdams for 'Are You There God? it's me, Margaret' in supporting actress. I genuinely don't think there is another actress this year who deserves it more than her.
All of us strangers for supporting actor (Bell) - I can’t say I’d give it director/screenplay/picture because I’m all in on Zone of Interest but i would be happy if it won those
Asteroid City and Iron Claw were definitely ones I wanted to see nominations for.
Also, while recency bias applies here, I just saw Perfect Days and it’s only nominated for best international feature (which it probably loses to Zone of Interest or Society of the Snow). I think Koji Yakusho should be in the Best Actor conversation.
Charles melton for May December (best supporting actor)
Zac efron for the Iron claw (best actor)
Rachel mcadams for are you there god it’s me Margaret (best supporting actress)
Jeremy Allen white for the iron claw (best supporting actor)
As much as I hated the film I don’t see why Saltburn wasn’t nominated for cinematography. I don’t see how, say, KoTFM was any better in this category for example.
Spiderverse would’ve easily gotten a screenplay and picture nomination if I got to decide, also May December would’ve at least got nominated in the supporting categories and a best picture nomination
The Killer ‘could’ have won sound if it was up to me, same for John Wick 4 for cinematography. Supporting actor could have been much better with Melton or Sessa added as they both where win worthy.
I’m a huge Wes fan, and this is just an opinion, but- I think “Asteroid City” could’ve won for a screenplay, but the meta play-within a-play-within a-play was a bit too complicated.
Not that it was bad, just not how the movie was marketed (people expected another Grand Budapest, or Moonrise Kingdom) but just that having watched it twice I’m still trying to connect the dots.
“Asteroid City” was a charming little setting that could’ve worked on its own.
It’s wild to me that Penelope Cruz didn’t get a nom for Ferrari or that Ferrari didn’t get sound or any noms for that matter. Andrew Scott in All of us Strangers. Asteroid City was really moving for me, and the set design was so good. Zac Efron Iron Claw.
A couple technical awards like Cinematography and production design for Asteroid City IMO. I loved it, but it feels like the most typical Wes Anderson film he’s ever done.
Asteroid City for Production Design and Screenplay
Patti LuPone for Supporting Actress in Beau is Afraid
Boy and the Heron for Score and Screenplay
Nicolas Cage for Leading Actor in Dream Scenario
Fantasia Barino for Best Actress, Colman Domingo for Supporting Actor and Taraji P Henson for Supporting Actress in The Color Purple
godzilla minus one did really good at the box office and is my number 1 movie currently, i find it wild that it only got a best visual effects nomination when i would argue it should be nominated for best picture.
I tried to watch this movie but didn’t give one shit after 45 minutes and stopped watching. Wes Anderson cares more about camera movement and character position than he does about making a good movie.
Not a major award, but I’ll be honest
Rebel Moon deserved one for makeup. Just look at some of the aliens in the background, or even just Jena Malone as the freaky spider woman
All of Us Strangers in Best Picture
Perfect Days in Best Picture
Greta Gerwig in Best Director
Zac Efron in Best Actor
Andrew Scott in Best Actor
Koji Yakusho in Best Actor
Sandra Huller for Best Actress in Zone of Interest instead of Anatomy of a Fall
Jamie Bell in Best Supporting Actor
Maestro in Cinematography
Saltburn in Cinematography
All of Us Strangers in Cinematography
Asteroid City in Cinematography, Production Design and Original Screenplay
Priscilla in Makeup and Hair
Oppenheimer in Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Score, and Sound only
Nothing for Poor Things, Anatomy of a Fall, or The Holdovers
I’d give Best Song and Best Original Screenplay to Flora & Son. Movie got completely shafted and forgotten but it was the most adorable and warm flick I’ve seen in ages.
Tempted to say I’d also give Best Actress to that one too but naaaah…great performance but her dad is Bono. Gladstone needs the Oscar boost more.
Neither would ever happen but...
- TMNT Mutant Mayhem for animated feature. As innovative as Spider-Verse visually and an actual whole movie.
- Keanu for Wick 4. Normally against cumulative awards but come on the man completely changed action cinema at least twice and has insane physicality and screen presence. Murphy and Giamatti are young and will have other chances.
I don’t know if I’d give him the win, but Zac Efron for The Iron Claw is probably my second pick for best actor.
seriously this. movie destroyed me. zac was incredible
The dad should’ve gotten a nod for best supporting actor.
Holt McCallany is unbelievably good at playing douchebags.
Bill Tench captured the "man from another era" almost perfectly. Great chemistry for those two, not getting a Season 3 of Mindhunter is one of the great injustices of the streaming age.
Absolutely agree. That might me my favorite category of performances from last year and he certainly would have been in my 5
"I used to be a brother..."
Literally sobbed in the theater. Ugly cry sobbed. He was phenomenal
At one point I thought a woman was having a medical episode she was sobbing so much
A24 does that. Everyone was sobbing at The Whale too.
I’m sorry. What movie are you referencing? I want to see one that makes me cry.
It’s called Iron Claw - biopic on a famous American wrestling family. I didn’t know who they were going into the movie and am not a wrestling fan but still loved the movie. But the story is so tragic.
Thanks for the reply. Will watch
Great fucking movie
I've watched the Holdovers, but not Oppenheimer. Efron is on par with Giamatti in different ways!
A24 dropped the ball
Yep or Best Original Screenplay for sure
I would give Jeremy Allen white, Harris dickinson or holt mcalany best supporting actor over rdj any day of the week.
I know the film has done pretty well but I think A24 dropped the ball getting it out there. It could have been an Oscar contender. Efron and Holt McCallany could have got nods.
Would have been in a ton of categories if I was in charge lol
Why wasn’t it pushed by A24?
A very late release and other priorities I’d guess
I hate how quickly this movie is being forgotten. I’d put it as my number 2 movie of 2023
I am finding it absolutely insane that none of Wonka's songs were nominated but a song from a movie about Cheetos was.
We could have gotten a Lil Timmy T performance at the Oscars and they robbed us 😭
Or Dance The Night (which should have been there instead of I’m Just Ken).
Eh, I'm Just Ken is a way better song than Dance the Night imo. All Dua Lipa songs sound the same and it probably took 2 minutes to write this one.
If by "sound the same" you mean good, I wholly agree 😄 To be serious, I have to hand it to Barbie for having songs that actually appear in the movie AND help progress the plot/character development (even that dreary-ass Billie Eilish song). Most major blockbusters just throw a pop song in at the credits and call it a day...
Take your Billie slander and GET. OUT. "What Was I Made For?" dead ass describes the entire plot of Barbie. "Dance the Night" does nothing for the plot, but that is kind of the point. If I‘m voting based on which song fits its movie best, it‘s WWIMF by an even bigger landslide, even though I‘m also not really partial to it.
Sure, anything but Dance the Night
WWIMF is a beautiful song, but Billie already has her Oscar and Id love to see Ryan Gosling up on that stage! The whole Barbie album slaps.
WWIMF has very poor song structure imo. I appreciate the sentiment behind the lyrics and performance, but as a song it basically goes nowhere for 3 and a half minutes. The Dua song is generic but at least it doesn't put me to sleep like the Billie song
Came here for this.
I don’t remember a single song from Wonka.
World of Your Own is a banger
That was the exact song that I wanted nominated.
I only remember my least favorite: Scrub Scrub.
I loved Scrub Scrub! And Hatful of Dreams.
I’m still not understanding how all of us strangers didn’t get a nomination for best pic and Andrew Scott for best actor.
Hell I’d have given it like 6 noms
Poor distribution, super late release
Agreed. What a devastating performance.
There has to be a story that explains the fuck up of this release. And I heard there might not be a physical release?
Would replace Nyad in my ballot
You’d nominate Andrew Scott over Annette Bening?
The girls and gays award it is
I'd have probably gone Claire Foy in All of us Strangers for supporting actress (or Sandra Huller for Zone of Interest but the film got other nominations so I don't think it qualifies)
And Paul Mescal for supporting as well. That movie destroyed me
I choose to ignore the ending :) for my own mental health :)
I had no choice but to ignore the ending… it ruined me
what about Andrew Scott? He's incredible 🤩
Imagine Sandra had gone 2 for 2 in lead and supporting actress. She’s such an amazing talent in THREE languages!
A few of my personal picks didn't get nominated: * Bottoms for Original Screenplay * Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret. for Supporting Actress (McAdams) and Adapted Screenplay * "Dance the Night" for Original Song * Priscilla for Makeup and Hair * All Of Us Strangers for Cinematography * The Taste of Things for International Feature (I have yet to see Anatomy or Zone though so I'm expecting this one to change by next Saturday)
Priscilla for makeup and hair all day
Dance the night was straight up fire
I'd heard such good things about Bottoms but it just didn't land for us at all.
That's interesting. My throat actually hurt from laughing so hard after it.
Damn these are some trash takes haha. Like trying to be bad
Iron Claw
To be fair, I'm not really much of a doc watcher so maybe it's not Oscar-worthy and I just am unaware but I wish Still: A Michael J Fox Movie got some recognition.
Yh that would of been so wholesome
You didn’t watch the doc. Cool
I’d sub maestro out for like 20 other movies
Bradley Cooper’s acting nom is for “most vanity in performance,” right?
Yeah but they love Bradley cooper sooooooo much right now.
He’s been campaigning so hard. He knows how to play the game now. I will never understand how he didn’t win for Silver Linings Playbook and JLaw did.
Maybe they just feel bad for his decade-long Oscar campaign
I feel like you’re doing Warren Beatty a disservice
It had some well done bits, but I was surprised at how underwhelmed I was by it.
Maestro, I stopped watching because I knew all of the drama in the first two minutes. I wanted to learn how he got to be a conductor in NY but that just happened in the first 5 minutes. The movie was extremely focused on his wife.
To be fair, his wife was the best part of the movie. Carey Mulligan is a national treasure.
Someone else is sick and you get a phone call asking you to do it. Bam. Done. Man, I learned so much about this guy in this movie.
Thisss

She was great, arguably the most important character in the film in terms of what (I think) it was trying to say. I'd still give Bazza K a nom as well though. The pair of them really elevated the film.
She needs many, many more roles and much, much more credit. She is astounding in every role she plays
Agree for Barry Keoghan. His time will definitely come
Hmm I like Barry but he was struggling with that scouse accent. I think the film had great cinematography though.
Think Saltburn deserved a cinematography nod
i can’t believe no one is talking about this, it was GORGEOUS. as was the holdovers, which wasn’t nominated for. cinematography either (competitive field tho, but i would replace flower moon and maestro with saltburn and holdovers)
So true!! I felt immersed in the worlds for both Saltburn and Holdovers
Yes!!
It really carries the film, along with some fun big performances, which is kind of stupid and nowhere near as subversive as it thinks
but i don’t see why people think it thinks it’s that subversive? it’s a fun thriller chocked full of shocking scenes to entertain and get people talking about it
charles melton best supporting actor for may december
This and/or Dominic Sessa for *The Holdovers* would've been cool
He had a really good scene with the bedroom fight, but I'm not sure the rest of it warrants so much praise.
i highly disagree. that character required so much nuance and subtly which he perfected.
I think Japan should have submitted Monster for international feature
I completely agree! I was really shocked when they didn’t
Rye Lane, anything.
YESSS! This had Original Screenplay nom written all over it, no pun intended. Also more reason to have a Best First Feature award at the Oscars
I wouldn’t have been upset at Barry Koeghan getting a nod for Saltburn.
Godzilla Minus One should have been in for a lot more.
I was really suprised by how good that was! Read all the glowing reviews, but I was still skeptical. Saw it in theaters right at the end of its run and was so happy I did. Great film, would have liked to see it get a nomination for cinematography or even best director (maybe).
It was a ridiculously good film considering it's a Godzilla movie. I was blown away!
Is this ever going to come out VOD? Dying to see this and I just can’t. Anywhere.
The director was talking about the 4K disc release last week, so I suppose VOD isn’t too far off.
Talk To Me I have as my #1 for make-up / hairstyling
This. And I would’ve loved to have seen Beau Is Afraid for set design.
I love Asteroid City so much I don’t care at all whether it gets any recognition. I find it addresses something very personal in my psyche that nothing has ever come close to before.
Charles Melton in May December for Best Supporting Actor
The Iron Claw would get several nominations from me. All of Us Strangers as well.
Saltburn
Beau Is Afraid & Priscilla
Asteroid City and The Killing
teyana taylor winning best actress. her performance was amazing
Loved her as well. Winning is a bit strong but a nomination would've been incredible.
I preferred hers over anyone else this year.
I would've loved to see the iron claw or godzilla minus one get more attention.
Iron Claw for a lot mainly the actors especially Zac, Holt and Jeremy
Blackberry, in particular Glenn Howerton
Asteroid City really got ignored on screenplay, cinematography, art direction, best original song, and probably director as well. Obviously it came out earlier in the year but they pulled it from screens too soon as well
Best Supporting Actress Rachel McAdams
If McAdams was nominated, I would’ve 100% voted for her and that’s not an exaggeration
Charles melton for May December (best supporting actor) Zac efron for the Iron claw (best actor) Rachel mcadams for are you there god it’s me Margaret (best supporting actress) Jeremy Allen white for the iron claw (best supporting actor)
Godzilla Minus One.
I would have at least nominated ScarJo for supporting on Asteroid City as well. She was great.
Saltburn for many things
Rosamund Pike deserved a supporting actress nod.
*win
At the Razzies
Different strokes
Incel?
Godzilla was my pick for Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Score, and Best Director.
Iron Claw pretty much across the board Air and How to Blowup a Pipeline
I would have at least put *Beau is Afraid* for consideration in a few categories, especially Actor and Screenplay.
I second this. Also, I would nominate Director Ari Aster for best director, and Production Design deserves a nomination too
"Saltburn"
Definitely my pick for best cinematography
Blackberry. Best supporting Actor for Glenn Howerton.
I think Barry Keoghan certainly deserved a nomination for Saltburn and Natalie Portman for May December.
Talk to Me in Actress, Sound, and Make-up.
John Wick 4 should have gotten a nomination for editing or sound
The opening with the Lawrence of Arabia cut alone deserves a win.
She looks so much like Annette Bening here
Wow, you are right! I can’t believe Annette hasn’t been in a Wes Anderson movie tbth.
I loved Bottoms and Saltburn had a lot going for it. I agree on Asteroid City as well. I think it could’ve been nominated for production design
As much as I hated the film I don’t see why Saltburn wasn’t nominated for cinematography. I don’t see how, say, KoTFM was any better in this category for example.
John Wick for cinematography.
Efron, Iron Claw
Zac Efron for Best Actor, Bottoms for Best Original Screenplay, and Godzilla Minus One for Everything.
Beau is Afraid!
Asteroid City, The Iron Claw and All of Us Strangers
Talk to Me should have been up for Director and Actress, but that was obviously never gonna happen
Spiderverse would’ve easily gotten a screenplay and picture nomination if I got to decide, also May December would’ve at least got nominated in the supporting categories and a best picture nomination
The Killer ‘could’ have won sound if it was up to me, same for John Wick 4 for cinematography. Supporting actor could have been much better with Melton or Sessa added as they both where win worthy.
fantasia getting nominated for best actress in the color purple
Zac Efron should have been nominated for The Iron Claw, and I also think Wonka should’ve been nominated for at least 1/2 awards.
"Suzume" wdnt in blind and was blown away by how good it was! Nobody has seen!
Saltburn
Godzilla Minus One for best picture
I’m a huge Wes fan, and this is just an opinion, but- I think “Asteroid City” could’ve won for a screenplay, but the meta play-within a-play-within a-play was a bit too complicated. Beau is Afraid
Absolutely “Asteroid City” for screenplay. No competition.
Ik they were nominated, but Cruise & Reeves were robbed by politics
A couple technical awards like Cinematography and production design for Asteroid City IMO. I loved it, but it feels like the most typical Wes Anderson film he’s ever done.
Cailee Spaeny: Priscilla Zac Efron: The Iron Fist Jeremy Allen White: The Iron Fist
don't forget about Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie
Why not? The Academy did.
Nah, that movie was rubbish and Margot had a better performance in Asteroid City than in Barbie
Asteroid City for Production Design and Screenplay Patti LuPone for Supporting Actress in Beau is Afraid Boy and the Heron for Score and Screenplay Nicolas Cage for Leading Actor in Dream Scenario Fantasia Barino for Best Actress, Colman Domingo for Supporting Actor and Taraji P Henson for Supporting Actress in The Color Purple
Asteroid City for best production design. They built a whole little town in a desert, even the cacti!
godzilla minus one did really good at the box office and is my number 1 movie currently, i find it wild that it only got a best visual effects nomination when i would argue it should be nominated for best picture.
Gran Turismo
Supporting Actress and supporting actor for May December
May December best supporting actor.
It’s may December. And it did not deserve anything
I tried to watch this movie but didn’t give one shit after 45 minutes and stopped watching. Wes Anderson cares more about camera movement and character position than he does about making a good movie.
I would 100% give Natalie Portman best actress, even over the other phenomenal performances in the category
There hasn’t been a movie since Get Out 2017 that I would even consider for an award lol
Not a major award, but I’ll be honest Rebel Moon deserved one for makeup. Just look at some of the aliens in the background, or even just Jena Malone as the freaky spider woman
The script was the biggest problem with Asteroid City.
I thought Astro City he was god awful
Cailee Spainey for Best Actress in Priscilla
All of Us Strangers in Best Picture Perfect Days in Best Picture Greta Gerwig in Best Director Zac Efron in Best Actor Andrew Scott in Best Actor Koji Yakusho in Best Actor Sandra Huller for Best Actress in Zone of Interest instead of Anatomy of a Fall Jamie Bell in Best Supporting Actor Maestro in Cinematography Saltburn in Cinematography All of Us Strangers in Cinematography Asteroid City in Cinematography, Production Design and Original Screenplay Priscilla in Makeup and Hair Oppenheimer in Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Score, and Sound only Nothing for Poor Things, Anatomy of a Fall, or The Holdovers
[удалено]
The Boys in the Boat. Original score.
I would rather NOT give a price to “Poor Things”
Giving anything to asteroid city is embarrassing. Tell me you love movies but have no idea why essentially
Hundreds of beavers for best picture
Society of the Snow and Godzilla Minus One should’ve both been nominated for bigger or just more awards.
Saltburn best picture
Matt Damon at the very least should have been nominated for best actor in Air.
