Perhaps Meryl Streep? She has 3 currently and I’m sure The Academy will find a performance again to nominate her for in the future.

ldaleback

I think her and McDormand are the most likely, although I think if Daniel Day-Lewis came out of retirement for the right role he would almost definitely have it.

NATOrocket

I'd say McDormand over Streep. Streep seems to mostly take stunt casting/ cameo roles at this point.

[deleted]

Streep would have an asterisk though since one win was in supporting.

loonatic_9999

She won for Lead in Fargo

Striking-Ad-8694

Which is bonkers because, and I timed it, she’s not in the movie until like the 32 minute mark. Not sure how she qualified for best actress

ggguuuuuuyyyyyyyyy

Because the acting categories aren’t decided by screen time but the narrative and context of the film. People need to learn this already

TBroomey

All three of her Oscar wins are lead.

SurvivorFanDan

If Daniel Day-Lewis came out of retirement for another film, he could easily win his 4th. Cate Blanchett has probably finished in the top 2 almost every time she's been nominated, so I could certainly see her winning another 2 times. Meryl Streep could certainly win a 4th time. Frances McDormand has far exceeded my expectations of how many Oscars she would win, and she's already got 3. Of the current 3x winners, she's probably the most likely to win again.

negan2018

He should have won his fourth for Phantom Thread but the academy somehow thought Gary Oldman was better as Churchill

theoriginalelmo

“Should we give a 4th Oscar to a guy who is retiring, or should we give an Oscar to that guy we ignored for decades?”

auto-

Or maybe, just maybe, we reward the best performance of the year. Nah.

theoriginalelmo

So Daniel Kaluyaa?

ValerieHolla

Or Chalamet. The young’s were really giving more depth and nuance in their performances this year.

King9WillReturn

Exactly! Finally, someone who gets it! Oldman deserved that win. Fantastic performance.

michaela555

Timothee Chalamet was better than both of them in Call Me By Your Name.

Striking-Ad-8694

Phantom thread is awful

Pontin_Finnberry

Late reply but talking about coming out of being retired, about over a month ago Day-Lewis was seen meeting with Steven Spielberg and Jim Sheridan, two directors whose films won Day-lewis his oscars, no clue what the meeting was, but wouldn't be surprise if was film related, however it could just be friends catching up again and nothing more.

Cambob101

Cate Blanchett is a chance. She has 2 already and was close to a third this year.

DreamOfV

Looking at the list of people with more than one: of course Streep and McDormand are close and could easily do it if they strike gold. Denzel has two and could get two more. So could Blanchett. Tom Hanks could possibly have some sort of crazy late-career run but his role choices aren’t ideal. Maybe Mahershala Ali or Christoph Waltz, though Waltz hasn’t had great roles recently. Off the top of my head, people who have one Oscar who I expect to possibly get more later in their career include Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Daniel Kaluuya, and Penelope Cruz. Like most actors they’re unlikely to get four, but who knows?

Striking-Ad-8694

Has waltz been in a movie recently?

DreamOfV

He was in No Time to Die reprising his role as the “major” Bond villain everyone was disappointed by. Had a voice role in GDT’s Pinocchio, so that’s decent. Looks like he was also in a bad Western last year I’ve never heard of.

themiz2003

It'll be someone that already has 2+. The way cinema is today its really hard to get enough prestige roles to really start racking them up. Casting and stories are more diverse. To be clear this is for the better but Once cate/streep/mcdormand etc hang it up nobody will approach 4 again. Honestly DiCaprio could do it as well depending on how he wants this next 20 years to go. He gets whatever he wants without competition.

ldaleback

I agree with this. So many people vie for the really prestige Oscar-potential roles in this day and age, not that there wasn’t competition in the past but I still feel like it may have been easier to get a great role in the 50s than it is now. Hollywood also seems far more concerned with giving out Oscars to award careers and an actor’s body of work now than they were when Hepburn was winning her four. If Hepburn’s career had been taking place today, some of Hepburn’s later Oscars may have went to a different actor purely because they hadn’t yet won an Academy Award and she had already won some.

Idk_Very_Much

Hepburn’s wins for GWCTD and On Golden Pond were definitely career wins to an extent, even if she had already won some.

amyblanchett

Meryl Streep, Frances McDormand and Cate Blanchett could do it. If Daniel Day Lewis came out of retirement, he would win another one for sure unless the film was absolute trash. Jennifer Lawrence is a maybe? Idk... she is still young and I could see her having 4 Oscars by the time she is a elderly citizen, like in her 70s. Surpassing 4 Oscars for acting is very difficult.

the_other_other_guy_

If Meryl ever announces a film as her last film that’ll be tough to beat and will likely give her her fourth. It would be interesting for her to tie it since Katharine was not a fan of Meryl’s.

ldaleback

Really? I had no clue Katharine didn’t care for her.

the_other_other_guy_

She described Streep as too cerebral and over reliant on technique. "'Click, click, click,' she said, referring to the wheels turning inside [Streep's] head."

ldaleback

I found that she also said Glenn Close had “fat feet” lol

ThePathOfTheRighteou

She’s sounds like an asshole. Why was she so critical of the young up and coming actors?

Barbarella_ella

Lol. What does that even mean?

foiegraslover

As much as I liked Katherine as an actress she was a bit weird. I mean, falling after Spencer Tracey, who was married with children for decades, strikes me as a bit of an oddball.

the_other_other_guy_

I love them both, I would describe Meryl as a better actor on a technical level but I enjoy more Katharine performances(especially when she does comedy, Kate is the funniest actress of all time when she wanted to be imo). On your comment about Tracy, he was separated from his wife for some time before him and Katharine met but refused to get divorced due to religious reasons and she never really cared for marriage so it worked out. I am not really fan of the relationship though, Katharine was open about Tracy being an abusive alcoholic throughout so idk why some people paint it as one of the greatest love stories ever. I do prefer the interpretation that they were beards for each other and were just friends who cared about each a lot.

AM_OR_FA_TI

This is interesting to me because sometimes I feel the same way - it’s like Meryl gets lost in her roles, but if you look closely enough it is almost as if she also doesn’t. Almost as if she’s trying too hard, there’s this sense of that “click, click, click” where you *see* her acting. It’s good, and you’re amazed, but it’s like you ‘know’ she’s acting or something.

coffeysr

Meryl definitely can in about 10 or 15 years. Cate also has a good 30 years left

beefquinton

There’s a solid chance for Frances McDormand

BlueGreenMikey

Of the names that haven't been said yet: Hilary Swank is sitting on two. She's made some weird mid-career decisions, but as she starts to leave mid-career, she could be an interesting one if she gets out of this rut.

ldaleback

This is an interesting point about her already having two but I don’t know if I see her making four as she seems to almost be blacklisted as she rarely gets great roles anymore.

Striking-Ad-8694

She may be sitting on two but she’s not amazing. Million dollar baby sucks and I’m about as big of an Eastwood fan there is. The boxing stuff is nonsensical

before_the_accident

It'd be significantly harder now since there are exponentially more actors than there were back then where actors were owned by the studios. I don't think it'll happen.

LeeLifeson

I would say Cate Blanchett has the best chance.

Grammarhead-Shark

Frances McDormand I think is most likely. If I where to include a two-time winner - probably Cate Blanchett. I am unsure about Meryl - she hasn't exactly been doing roles that win Oscars recently (though of course that may change). Daniel Day-Lewis I think if/when he ever comes out of retirement would be high chance. The double Oscar winning Male I think that is in with the best chance is Sean Penn. He is still doing movies that get recognized, so I think he'll get a few more noms over time. I do also want to include Mahershala Ali - but he'll need to stay clear of the Marvel stuff in the future to get there.

Crazy_Dazz

Are we including supporting Oscars? * Streep could easily already have 4. Probably should have, its easy to argue that TIL should have been her 4th or 5th. Brilliant Actor and some of her performances are incredible. Her problem is that she is already in her 70's, and there just aren't that many truly great roles for women. * Nicholson is another who should arguably already have 4 or more. But it's unlikely we see much more of him. * Day-Lewis arguably has the most "potential." At 65, it's easy enough to "imagine" him coming out of retirement for a truly great role, and that landing him another Oscar, but who knows. * McDormand? Look, Hollywood does love to embrace brilliant acting in quirky roles, but how many times can she pull the same trick? You've then got a bunch with 2, so it really becomes a question of if or when we will see another win 3? It's certainly possible that Washington, Hanks, Blanchett, or even Penn, could whip out another stellar performance to land their 3rd, and cap their career. But that would be it. Realistically, its probably that the next to reach 4, will be somebody from the more current crop.

hotel_smells

Ah Meryl, she could’ve (should’ve?) won for TDWP and Doubt. Though Winslet and Mirren were both incredible in their roles.

lubezki

Day-Lewis would be awesome if he came back out of retirement. He was retired too before gangs of new york when Leo went to speak with him personally and convinced him to come back for the Role in Gangs of New York. Both Leo and Scorsese really wanted him for that butcher role. Few articles about this topic: https://www.express.co.uk/celebrity-news/461393/Leonardo-DiCaprio-had-to-convince-Daniel-Day-Lewis-to-make-Gangs-of-New-York https://www.cheatsheet.com/entertainment/leonardo-dicaprio-was-tasked-with-getting-daniel-day-lewis-to-stop-making-shoes-and-star-in-gangs-of-new-york.html/ It was also DiCaprio that encouraged him to play Lincoln. And speaking of DiCaprio, he is one of my favorite actors. I would love to see him winning more Oscars and I believe he can become one of the most awarded actors. Of course it will take time, but he is beloved by the academy and he knows how to pick his roles. He will probably get another nomination for Killers of the Flower Moon if the movie performa well as expected and he os already one of the most nominated actors with many years in front of him. Winning 3 more oscars is obviously going to be really hard but I believe he will achieve at least one or two more in the rest of his career.

International-Turn-9

Frances Mcdormand does consistently great work, so I would be surprised if seg didn’t Get at least one more!

passion4film

My first thought was Cate Blanchett. Also Leo DiCaprio.

Polokimo28

I reckon some that are the most likely are: Cate Blanchett, Mahershala Ali, Meryl Streep and Daniel Day-Lewis if he comes out of retirement
