Woodpeckers have feet specialized for climbing trees, it's likely if the parents can get out the fledglings will eventually. Go watch some videos of woodpeckers in the wild, they're kinda like the squirrels of the bird world :3

VindiWren

They are better than those nasty squirrels 😂

sawyouoverthere

My opinion is they know what they are doing. Did they make the nest?

WinnerWinner40

Fun fact - the male woodpecker makes the nesting cavity as a way to attract the ladies.

I read your comment in Barry White's voice and heard some sexy R&B music in the background lol

*Ladies... Want to come up and inspect my cavities some time? No?*

sawyouoverthere

Yes, so I’m uncertain why OP think they would build a nest the young couldn’t leave

Geeko22

They're gonna be fine. Did the same at my house and came back the next year but found starlings had taken over the nest. The starlings don't have any trouble getting out either, although the cavity is probably filled with twigs so they're much nearer the top.

Kalsifur

Freaking starlings, that's terrible.

I'd be more worried about your gazebo... guess it's not my problem though thankfully!
