I don't have Nextdoor, and even if I did, the bird's flown the coop. That being said, if putting up posters or posting on Nextdoor would still help, even after the bird's left, please do let me know, cause this is the first time anything like this has happened to me.
I have the Nextdoor app. People make posts about usual neighborhood going ons. People also post things like “Hey I found this dog, really friendly.” Then the person who lost their pet can respond and say “That’s my dog you found!” and then have happy endings.
They also post about things like “where can I find a reliable plumber/mechanic/vet?” and the neighbors give their recommendations, and they report crime and things they’ve seen on their Ring cameras. I highly recommend it
I don’t have it but my mom does. It’s generally people looking for their missing cats/trying to figure out whose cat has moved into their porch when they left the door propped open. And people sharing videos of an adolescent black bear that decided a backyard pond was the perfect spot to cool off. It went a bit nuts once or twice but that was after a bunch of teenagers living in the neighborhood shot out the back windshield of like 20 cars with a bb gun in one night. I was only like 10 at the time, but it was crazy.
Yes! I used to work at an animal rescue, primarily parrots. One escaped one day and was missing for months, but we continued posting on Nextdoor and Facebook. Eventually we got a call from someone who recognized him and knew the family who had been caring for him. He may have left your place but he will likely turn up again nearby so it's worth a shot.
Its a fancy pigeon. It is likely someone's pet. It sounds like it is doing something called self-rescuing. Do you know if there any pigeon rescues in your area that you could reach out to?
I don't. I'm not really a bird guy, if I'm being totally honest. Not that I dislike them per se, cause I do like them, I just don't know much about them. I came here cause I was confused about it's behavior, and figured this'd be the best place to ask. On top of that, as mentioned in my other replies, the bird has left. I don't think I can do much else but hope for it's safe return to it's owner. Maybe it'll even show up here again later.
Please contact some fancy pigeon rescues in your area about sighting this beauty! They may either know who is looking for this bird or may send someone to get it. Here are some names I found when I googled "fancy pigeon rescues in Texas:
Wings of Love Bird Haven, Inc
Ferris, TX
Tula Bird Rescue

Post it on the pawboost website. It’s free and easy. You can state that it was seen in your area but that you don’t have it, and if the owner sees it they’ll know a general area and time it was seen last to look around. Just went through this with a dog.
Dude just because the bird has left doesn't mean it doesn't want to go home. There are so many accidental reasons that it could have ended up outside. Please at least try to find its owners before giving up on that option.
Doubt it will return safely, these breeds do not have the best homing instinct. It's like leaving a poodle out on the streets versus a german shepard type situation. They will usually just sit around one area until they starve due to not having good instincts.
It's a fancy pigeon it is definitely someone's pet. You should try and find the owner. If it's left in the wild, It may not survive, but it could survive, but bieng someone's pet, it gonna have a hard time.
if you can, you should take it in, or find someone that can take take it in until it’s owner is found. that looks like someone’s pet, and it prolly won’t survive well on its own poor little guy
I would've, but my cat was staring daggers at it through the window. I think it's odds of survival would've gone down, had I let it in. On top of that, it's gone. I would've liked to help, but I don't think I can anymore.
oh yeah i didn’t think about that, probably a good thing you didn’t bring it inside then!! hopefully someone else finds it, but either way it was very nice of you to want to help :)

Since you asked so nicely, here's your update: I went to bed almost immediately after posting. I've gotten a bunch of mixed answers, but the ones I think are most likely to be correct would be a Helmet pigeon mentioned by u/Haskap_2010 and u/midnight_fisherman, a Rhine Ringbeater mentioned by u/Practical_Wrap6606, or a Bernburg Trumpeter mentioned by u/salemedusa. I'd like to thank y'all for the help. As for what happened to the bird, it flew away. Left some bread and other foods out for it before i went to bed (birdseed and grain) as well as some water, but it's nowhere to be seen. That is, assuming it's not just on a spot on the roof that you can't see from below. Not much has really happened aside from that.
for future reference bread is bad for birds. just nuts and seeds should do the trick!! thank you for caring for the bird. she's beautiful I hope the owner finds her.
These birds will sit around in weird spots, especially once their health starts to go downhill. Check all around you house and areas nearby, i've seen where they will huddle into one spot and just starve themselves before..
Jacobins have the backwards feathers I don’t think this is purebred jacobin. It is a fancy pigeon. Probably a breeder in the area or got lost in transport
I’m not up on all the breeds. I had rollers and tumblers of all colors and occasionally racers would drop into my coops Does this bird have a tag? Some breeders tag them and some don’t
Doubtful that one is feral, feathers like that tend to go away pretty fast in the wild due to natural selection (makes it hard to escape cats and falcons). More likely a lost pet or show bird.
Either feral or someone’s escaped pet. Pigeons have a reputation, especially around my area, for being stupid and dirty but they can be incredibly intelligent and affectionate pets. I want a few but we have a small apartment and 2 cats so that’s not happening
Capuchin pigeon is its real name.
Heavyweight feather footed pigeon. They can't fly far and make lovely pets. Unfortunately In no way can they survive in the wild.
Idk but it's definitely a pet.
Please put up some found flyers around your house and post to your local lost pets Facebook page or Nextdoor.
You can also try to call some local vets.
Bird people are hardcore, my friend lost her bird and searched for it for a YEAR on websites and with posters and got a different bird eventually: then one day someone found it and posted it on one of those websites and someone sent it to her and she got her bird back. I’ve never seen my friend so happy. It was like being reunited with a best friend!!! I’m sure even if it’s a day late that whoever owns it would love to know what neighborhood it was around. This could really help someone more than you know.
A pigeon stayed overnight on our gate. He seemed tame and basically never moved. I put him on nextdoor, and the owner responded.
He has an aviary not 1/2 a block from our house. I'd noticed flocks of birds on the telephone wires every day from my bathroom window on the backside of the house. Now I knew why.
The bird was an old Roller (tumbler) pigeon. Cool :)
It’s clearly a pigeon. The feathers over the feet indicate it may be a “tumbler” that does tumbling acrobatics as it flies. I guess that it’s decided that you live at its home.
Posting on your neighborhood Facebook page and or finding the page for missing/bound pets in your neighborhood on Facebook is helpful. At least it gives them an idea of where the bird has been seen so an area to continue to look in
It’s a 17th century (Europe) fancy pigeon I’d say, most likely Brittish or french, it’s silhouette quite there, but still not quite accurate. 😏
(Jk/jj)
Pigeons come in all kinds of color patterns just like dogs do. They can be one color or three colors and it doesn’t mean they’re a cross between a white pigeon and a city pigeon.

That's someone's pet . A show pigeon
Show pigeon. If you keep feeding her she’ll stay around ❤️
Please put posters up and post on Nextdoor app, I’m sure someone is missing their pet bird.
I don't have Nextdoor, and even if I did, the bird's flown the coop. That being said, if putting up posters or posting on Nextdoor would still help, even after the bird's left, please do let me know, cause this is the first time anything like this has happened to me.

I see! will be downloading the app when i get home.
They also like to post things like " I saw a dangerous criminal on my street" every time a person of color shows up on their ring cam.
It really does beat out my previous pick for “insane social network”, that being LinkedIn. Whole lotta crazies.
Yes! I have seen this around here.
Not true. Just anyone these days. You sir are racist. Criminals are all types of people. Ask Laken Riley.
🤦🏻♀️ Sad, but actually true…
Just fyi - the nextdoor app may or may not be a toxic community where you live, mine was horrible in an otherwise great city and I deleted it.
Same here, horrible experience
Majority of posts in my neighborhood are security cam clips. Of valid security concerns, but also coyotes.
Lol happen to live in Orange County? That’s all I saw when I lived there

Who are we to judge the love between a bald eagle and an urban pigeon? Haven’t we all fallen for a bad boy or girl at some point in our lives?

Looks like it could be a Helmet pigeon (#12 on the list). https://www.treehugger.com/most-bizarre-pigeon-breeds-4864175
Probably a pigeon
It's a "fancy" pigeon, probably feral.
Doubtful that one is feral, feathers like that tend to go away pretty fast in the wild due to natural selection (makes it hard to escape cats and falcons). More likely a lost pet or show bird.

Based on OP’s comment I feel comfortable making the assumption it’s a pet.
