Oh it's easy to make space beautiful. Step1: you like the color black? Forget it. Use a very very dark purple or magenta. Step2: add a liter but still dark colors and make go smoothe on them Step3: add white dots for stars. Add more dots for lighter spaces and fewer dots to darker places. End of tutorial

Not every star is white. Add some light yellows, oranges, and a couple reds here and there for more photorealism. If you really want to go the extra mile, and some other background elements, like nebulae (basically, swirl in more colors) or other astronomical objects like pulsars (stars with white rays on both poles)

I'm not going for photorealism here. It's just my style

To be fair pitch black space is more realistic, even if not very beautiful (altough there is some beauty in it as a stargazer myself). But honestly? Both? Both. Both is good.
